Assessment of impact of α-Fe2O3 and γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles on phytoplankton species Selenastrum capricornutum and Nannochloropsis oculata

Ates, Mehmet; Cimen, Isil C. C.; Unal, Ilkay; Kutlu, Banu; Ertit Tastan, Burcu; Danabas, Durali; Aksu, Onder; Arslan, Zikri

In this study, the impact of alpha-iron oxide (α-Fe2O3, 20-40 nm) and gamma iron oxide (γ-Fe2O3, 20-40 nm) nanoparticles (NPs) on phytoplankton species Selenastrum capricornutum and Nannochloropsis oculata was investigated Characterizations of the NPs were systematically carried out by TEM, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential, X-ray diffraction, SEM, and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy. Acute toxicity was tested between 0.2 and 50 mg/L for each NP for a period of 72 hours exposure. γ-Fe2O3 NP inhibited development of N oculata at the rate of 54% in 0.2 mg/L group with a high mortality rate of up to 82%. α-Fe2O3 NPs were less toxic that induced 97% mortality on N oculata at 10 mg/L suspensions. In contrast, α-Fe2O3 NP inhibited growth of S capricornutum strongly (73%) in 0.2 mg/L group. γ-Fe2O3 NPs showed similar growth inhibition (72%) on S capricornutum in 10 mg/L suspensions. Despite the differential effects, the results indicated acute toxicity of α-Fe2O3 and γ-Fe2O3 NPs on N oculata and S capricornutum.

SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL DISTRIBUTION OF PHYTOPLANKTON IN KARKAMIS DAM LAKE (SANLIURFA/TURKEY)

Sonmez, Feray; Kutlu, Banu; Sesli, Ahmet

The environmental factors that affect the seasonal change of the phytoplankton community and composition in Karkamis Dam Lake were investigated on samples taken from five stations between January 2015 and December 2015. It was found that the phytoplankton of Karkamis Dam Lake consisted of 85 taxa belonging to Bacillariophyta (56 taxa), Chlorophyta (15 taxa), Chrysophyta (1 taxon), Cyanophyta (10 taxa), Dinophyta (2 taxa) and Euglenophyta (1 taxon). Members of Bacillariophyta and Chrysophyta increased well during spring, summer and also at the end of fall whilst Chlorophyta grew well only in summer and fall. Cyanophyta became dominant at the end of spring and in summer. However Dinophyta was remarkably conspicuous in winter as well as in spring and fall in terms of prevalence. Excessive reproduction of Cyanobacteria, which is a characteristic aspect of mesotrophic lakes, was observed in Karkamis Dam Lake in both May and July. Results of physical and chemical measurements and analysis indicated that the lake was mesotrophic based on PCA and Carlson trophic state index. Phytoplankton composition was found to be affected by environmental factors such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, phosphate and nitrate through the year. Using these data, a strong model was developed for sustainable management in Karkamis Dam Lake.

Influence of Alpha and Gamma-Iron Oxide Nanoparticles on Marine Microalgae Species

Demir, Veysel; Ates, Mehmet; Arslan, Zikri; Camas, Mustafa; Celik, Fatih; Bogatu, Corneliu; Can, Safak Seyhaneyildiz

The effects of alpha-iron oxide (alpha-Fe2O3) and gamma-iron oxide (gamma-Fe2O3) nanoparticles (NPs) on marine microalgae species (Nannochloropsis sp. and Isochrysis sp.) were investigated in this study. Both Fe2O3 NPs covered the surface of algae with the agglomerates of the nanoparticles. This form of physical NP toxicity significantly decreased the sizes of phytoplankton. Both NPs were toxic to the tested algal species, while alpha-Fe2O3 showed less toxicity than gamma-Fe2O3 NPs for both algal species. A comparative analysis of growth data of the two algal species treated with alpha-Fe2O3 or gamma-Fe2O3 NPs revealed that Isochrysis sp. are more sensitive than Nannochloropsis sp. Toxicity of these widely used NPs to primary producers forming the base of the food chain in aquatic environments might result in widespread adverse effects on aquatic environmental health.

Phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing in the Homa Lagoon (Izmir Bay, Turkey)

    Banu, Kutlu

Phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing were investigated at one station in the Homa Lagoon from February to January in 2006-2007. Our results showed significant seasonal variations in phytoplankton dynamics. Microzooplankton was mainly composed of dinoflagellates and tintinnid ciliates and nauplii. Microzooplankton grazing increased with increasing of temperature. Grazing rate was maximum levels in spring and summer. Microphytoplankton, which dominated the total algal biomass and production, were characterized by the proliferation of several chain-forming diatoms. Small heterotrophic flagellates and aloricate ciliates were the main controllers of phytoplankton. Phytoplankton represented a significant for micrograzers, which grazing represented 20-120% of diatom and cynabacteria algal production during 2006-2007. Microzooplankton has, however, a relatively high impact on microphytoplankton, as > 45% of microalgal production was consumed throughout the year. These results suggest that the low grazing was one of the factors contributing to the development of the spring bloom. All of seasonal bases, the phytoplankton production were grazed by microzooplankton in summer, autumn and winter-spring seasons have been changing between 20%-120%. The seasonal variation in the microzooplankton grazing pressure seems to result from the dominant size class of the phytoplankton community of this lagoon diatom and cynabacteria.
