Reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the pain attention and awareness questionnaire for nonspecific musculoskeletal pain

Sürmeli, Mahmut; Özdemir, Özlem Çinar; Topcuoğlu, Ceyhun

Background: Reliable and valid assessments of pain vigilance and awareness are crucial for understanding and treating pain within cognitive-behavioral frameworks, such as the fear-Avoidance Model. While the Pain Vigilance and Awareness Questionnaire (PVAQ) is a widely used tool for this purpose, no culturally adapted and validated version exists for the Turkish-speaking population, creating an instrumental and clinical gap. Objective: This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and comprehensively evaluate the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the PVAQ in a sample of patients with nonspecific musculoskeletal pain. Methods: An instrumental, cross-sectional study was conducted. The PVAQ was translated and adapted into Turkish according to established guidelines. A sample of 131 patients with low back, neck, or shoulder pain completed the PVAQ-T, the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and a visual analog scale (VAS) for pain intensity. Reliability was assessed via internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient - ICC). Construct validity was examined via exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Criterion validity was evaluated through Pearson correlations with the PCS, TSK, and HADS. Results: The PVAQ-T demonstrated acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.83) and good test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.918). EFA supported a two-factor structure (vigilance and awareness), explaining 62.3% of the variance. CFA indicated that the original 16-item model had a suboptimal fit (CFI = 0.807; GFI = 0.732; SRMR = 0.060; RMSEA = 0.138, and χ²/df = 3.46). Following the removal of items 4 and 12 based on exploratory and item-level findings, some fit indices showed modest improvement (CFI = 0.836; GFI = 0.768; SRMR = 0.006), whereas others remained unchanged or worsened (RMSEA = 0.144; χ²/df = 3.69). The PVAQ-T total score showed moderately to strongly, statistically significant (p < 0.001) correlations with the PCS (r = 0.681), TSK (r = 0.694), HADS-Anxiety (r = 0.491), and HADS-Depression (r = 0.416) scores, supporting its criterion validity. Conclusion: Within a Turkish sample of individuals with nonspecific musculoskeletal pain, the 14-item Turkish version of the PVAQ demonstrates adequate reliability and validity for assessing pain-related attention and awareness. While the two-factor structure was supported at the exploratory level, confirmatory findings suggest that results should be interpreted with caution. The PVAQ-TR may be a useful instrument for research and clinical assessment of pain-related attentional processes, highlighting the importance of cultural adaptation and empirical evaluation of psychometric instruments.

The Turkish Version of the Self Evaluation of Breathing Questionnaire: Cross-cultural Adaptation, Validity and Reliability

Ataş, Kübra; Kızmaz, Erhan; Mutlu, Ebru Kaya

Investigating the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Breathing Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SEBQ), a tool for measuring dysfunctional breathing. Ninety-two healthy adults (mean (range) age 29.4 (19–56) years; 39 males) were analysed. The SEBQ was translated and adapted into Turkish. At baseline, data were collected using the SEBQ, Nijmegen Questionnaire (NQ), breath-holding time, and Short Form 36 (SF-36). The SEBQ was repeated within 7–14 days. SEBQ validity was assessed through content, structural, and convergent/divergent validity analyses, while reliability was evaluated for internal consistency, stability, and reproducibility. One item was removed based on exploratory factor analysis. The SEBQ has a two-factor structure and explains 50.1% of total variance, confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis. It has a positive correlation with the NQ and a negative correlation with SF-36 subscales, but not with breath-holding time and general health. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.931, and the intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.814. The Standard Error of Measurement and Smallest Real Difference were 5.06 and 15.03, respectively. The SEBQ is well-structured, valid, internally consistent, stable, and reproducible for assessing subjective unexplained respiratory symptoms in the Turkish population.

Copula-based conditional reliability with application to rocket motor data

Hudaverdi, Burcu; Susam, Selim Orhun; Chesneau, Christophe

In this paper, we construct conditional reliability in the context of stress-strength models, taking into account the relationship between applied stress and strength. The Bernstein copula approximation is used to calculate the conditional reliability values. Real data from a rocket motor experiment are considered to evaluate the conditional reliability strength of a motor case and the required stress endurance for the motor.

On the Construction of a Semiparametric Family of Bivariate Copulas Using the Opposite Diagonal Section of Copulas

    Susam, Selim Orhun; Chesneau, Christophe

In this article, a new semiparametric family of bivariate copulas is proposed and studied. The copulas of this family innovate in their construction; they are based on an original univariate generating function involving the opposite diagonal section of intermediary copulas. Several of their crucial properties are examined. In the practical part, we use them to estimate the reliability parameter in a stress-strength-dependent setting, including an estimation approach based on the Bernstein copula. Finally, their applicability and good performance are confirmed using a data set related to the logarithmic concentrations of two chemical elements in water samples.

Effect of Spectrogram Parameters and Noise Types on The Performance of Spectro-temporal Peaks Based Audio Search Method

    Koseoglu, Murat; Uyanik, Hakan

Audio search algorithms are used to detect the queried file in large databases, especially in multimedia applications. These algorithms are expected to perform the detection in a reliable and robust way within the shortest time. In this study, based on spectral peaks method, an audio fingerprint algorithm with a few minor modifications was developed to detect the matching audio file in target database. This method has two stages as the audio fingerprint extraction and matching. In the first stage, fingerprint features are extracted from spectral peaks on the spectrograms of audio files by hash functions. This state-of-art technique reduces the processing load and time considerably compared to traditional methods. In the second stage, fingerprint data of the queried file are compared with the data created in the first stage in the database. The algorithm was demonstrated, and the effect of spectrogram parameters (window size, overlap, number of FFT) was investigated by considering reliability and robustness under different noise sources. Also, it was aimed to contribute to new audio retrieval studies based on spectral peaks method. It was observed that the variation in the spectrogram parameters significantly affected the number of matchings, reliability and robustness. Under high noise conditions, the optimal spectrogram parameters were determined as 512 (window size), 50% (overlap), 512 (number of FFT). It was seen in general that the algorithm successfully detected the queried file in the database even in high noise conditions for these parameters. No significant effect of music genre was observed.

The adaptation of the Well-Being in Pregnancy (WiP) Questionnaire into Turkish: validity and reliability of a questionnaire

Sunay, Zeliha; Sabancı Baransel, Esra; Uçar, Tuba

This study aimed to adapt the Well-Being in Pregnancy (WiP) Questionnaire into Turkish and assess the instrument’s validity and reliability in pregnant women. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was applied to 500 pregnant women included in Sample I, while confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was applied to 386 pregnant women in Sample II. As a result of the EFA applied to Sample I, it was found that the 12-item WiP encompasses two factors (Positive Affect and Satisfaction subscale and Concerns subscale), and as a result of the CFA applied to Sample II, it was found that the scale has good fit indices (χ 2/df = 1.990, p =.000, CFI = 0.95, GFI = 0.95, AGFI = 0.93, RMSEA = 0.04, and PCLOSE = 0.000). The Cronbach’s alpha internal consistency coefficients that were obtained as a result of the reliability analyses of the scale were found as 0.72, 0.70 and 0.60 for all items of WiP, its first subscale and its second subscale, respectively. It was found that the item-total correlations of the scale varied in the range of r = 0.44–0.55 (p <.001). In the test–retest analysis, a statistically significant positive correlation was found between the total scores of the scale obtained in two different implementations (r = 0.412, p =.024). This study supported the use of WiP as a valid and reliable instrument for Turkish pregnant women. Impact StatementWhat is already known on this subject? The Well-Being in Pregnancy (WiP) Questionnaire developed in 2017 by Alderdice et al. is a measurement tool that is used to determine the positive and negative emotions of pregnant women. This questionnaire has not been translated to other languages. What do the results of this study add? The reliability and validity of the Turkish version of WiP were found to acceptable, and two subscales were identified as the Positive Affect and Satisfaction subscale and the Concerns subscale. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? This reliable and valid instrument can be used for measuring the whole spectrum of well-being rather than just poor psychological health.
