Unal, İlkay
Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is widely used in biomedical applications due to its biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, and bioactivity. However, its low mechanical strength, tendency toward rapid corrosion, and lack of bactericidal properties present significant limitations in applications. This study aimed to improve the properties of HAp by reinforcing it with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and doping it with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and silver-core selenium-shell nanoparticles (Ag@SeNPs). Ocimum basilicum extract was used as both a reducing and stabilizing agent in the synthesis of nanoparticles using an environmentally friendly and non-toxic method as an alternative to traditional methods. The synthesized HAp, HAp/MWCNT, Ag-HAp/MWCNT, and Ag@Se-HAp/MWCNT nanocomposites were characterized by TEM, SEM, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and BET analysis. BET analysis showed a reduction in surface area from 109.4 m2/g for pure HAp to 71.4 m2/g, 47.5 m2/g, and 35.3 m2/g for HAp/MWCNTs, Ag- HAp/MWCNTs, and Ag@Se-HAp/MWCNTs, respectively. Antimicrobial activities against P. aeruginosa, E. coli, S. aureus, E. faecalis, and C. albicans were evaluated. HAp and HAp/MWCNT did not show any antimicrobial activity, while Ag-HAp/MWCNTs showed inhibition zones of 14 mm for Escherichia coli and 18 mm for Pseudomonas aeruginosa at 5 mg/mL. Ag@Se-MWCNTs/HAp exhibited superior efficacy with inhibition zones of 18 mm, 12 mm, and 20 mm for S. aureus, E. faecalis, and Candida albicans, respectively. The incorporation of Ag@SeNPs enhanced HAp’s antibacterial and antifungal properties through a synergistic mechanism.

Unal, Ilkay; Egri, Sinan
This study describes an eco-friendly procedure to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using fresh and dried stem extract of Rheum ribes. AgNPs formation was confirmed using UV-vis spectrometry. The effects of parameters such as temperature, reaction time, pH, AgNO3 concentration, and plant extract/AgNO3 ratio on NP formation were evaluated. Morphology and structural features of the particles were characterized using SEM, TEM, XRD, and FTIR. The average size, polydispersity index, and zeta potential were determined using DLS. After characterization, among the two AgNP samples, selected one; AgNP sample synthesized by dried Rheum ribes stem extracts (d-AgNPs), which exhibited narrow size distribution and high surface plasmon resonance in the range of 435-445 nm for toxicity assessment. The cytotoxic effect of d-AgNPs on HUVECs cells was evaluated with MTT analysis. Accumulation measurements were made in three periods as 24, 48, and 72 h and elimination values were examined at +24 h using ICP-MS analysis

This study aims to describe a simple and environmentally friendly procedure for producing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Paeonia kesrouanensis (P. kesrouanensis) extracts and to determine the toxic effect in the aquatic environment. The morphologies, size, size distributions, and structural properties were analyzed using SEM-EDX, TEM, DLS, zeta potential, FTIR, and XRD. AgNPs were applied to Artemia salina (A.salina), aquatic organism individuals at 7 different concentrations (0.0, 0.2, 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 mg/L) for 24, 48, and 72 h. AgNPs accumulation and elimination, ion release amounts, and the survival rates of organisms were determined at periods of 24, 48, and 72nd hours. The highest accumulation was observed at the 24th hour at the 50 mg/L exposure level. The survival rate decreased as exposure time increased at all concentrations.
