Both pharmacological and material-based approaches aim to slow bacterial evolution toward resistance. In this context, imparting specific antibacterial properties to materials is essential. Traditionally, alloying was a method to equip entire metals with antibacterial features, such as incorporating small amounts of copper (Cu) and/or silver (Ag). However, due to the high cost and inherent limitations of alloying, surface modification processes have gained prominence. Recent antibacterial studies on copper have led to the application of Cu(Ag) electrochemical coatings on AISI430 steel surfaces. This study aims to combine copper’s antibacterial properties with enhanced corrosion resistance and surface hardness. The coatings were deposited using deep eutectic solvents, known for their environmentally friendly properties, followed by potentiodynamic analysis. Microstructural and phase distribution characteristics were examined through SEM-EDS analysis, while surface roughness was analyzed using profilometry. Transitioning from micro-disc electrodes to macro-scale AISI430 substrates, Cu(Ag) films containing 16% Ag demonstrated nanoscale roughness, approximately double the hardness, and superior corrosion resistance compared to conventional copper surfaces. Antibacterial tests compared the coated surfaces with untreated AISI430 steel. Results showed that Cu(Ag)-coated surfaces exhibited improved antibacterial properties. This study shows how Cu(Ag) electrochemical coatings can be used to make surfaces that are antibacterial, long-lasting, and resistant to corrosion.

Highlights Optimum disposal efficiency for turbidity was 96.5 at 10 mM NaCI. Optimum disposal efficiency for COD was 60.5% at 10 mM NaCI. Optimum disposal efficiency for NH3-N was 64.9% at 10 mM NaCI. Turbidity, NH3-N, and COD disposal fitted PFO model due to high R2 values. The Ti/PdO-CoO electrode has a stability of 96 h.

It is well known that the surface of metal-based implants is very resistive in aggressive body environments due to the noble oxide layer naturally formed on their surfaces. However, their osseointegration properties are very low. By the way, specific cells attached are desired on the implant surface when the surface of an implant connects with tissue in many circumstances. Thus in parallel with technological developments, biomedical engineering focuses on the growth of new tissue on the implant surface or in the porosities of the implant. The bulk properties of metallic scaffolds, especially Young’s modulus, can be controlled by the porosity ratio of the scaffold but cannot form a bond between the implant and tissue interfaces. Thus the coating of scaffold walls with a bioactive material is required. In this chapter, bioceramic coating techniques of scaffolds, mechanical and corrosion behavior, biocompatibility, and interactions of surface/tissue interface, especially considering the last published reports, were reviewed, in detail.

In this study, the load-carrying capacity of a single-lap joint bonded by an adhesive was determined experimentally. Glass fiber-epoxy composite material was chosen as adherends and Loctite (R) 9466 A&B2 was used as adhesive. The vacuum assisted resin infusion method (VARIM) was used to manufacture composites. In this experimental study, the effects of hole drilling and temperature were investigated. Five hole configurations and three temperatures (room temperature, 50 degrees C, and 80 degrees C) were considered. The results show that hole drilling elevate the failure load and when the temperature increases the load-carrying capacity decreases.
