Yilmaz, Fatih; Türkoglu, Ismail; Kirmizikaya Özmen, Gorkem; Yüce Babacan, Ebru; Yilmaz, Okkes

13 species of Gundelia species plants are endemic in T & uuml;rkiye and are frequently used by the public for both nutrition and medicinal objectives. In this study, three parts (flower, leaf, and stem) of three species of Gundelia ( G.dersim , G.glabra, and G.munzurensis) were biochemically investigated. DPPH and ABTS analyses for antioxidant activity were performed on methanol extracts of plant parts. As a result of both analyses in parallel, the flower part of G.munzurensis had the highest %Inhibition value (DPPH:91.85 +/- 0.78; ABTS:97.38 +/- 0) (P<0.001). In total phenolic (29.09 mg GAE/g) and total flavonoid (5.59 mg CE/g) measurements, the highest amount was found statistically quite significant (P<0.001) in the leaf part of G.munzurensis. Gallic, vanillic, ferulic, romantic, and cinnamic acids, which are phenolic acids and of the flavonoids, rutin, catechin, naringin, and naringenin, were determined in all plant parts. Vitamin D3, alpha-tocopherol, ergosterol, stigmasterol, and beta-sterol were detected in parts of all plant species. While palmitic (16:0), palmitoleic (16:1), stearic (18:0), oleic (18:1), linoleic (18:2), and linolenic (18:3) fatty acids as the main fatty acids were detected in all parts of the three Gundelia species, lauric (12:0), tridecanoic (13:0), myristic (14:0), pentadecanoic (15:0), cis-10-pentadecanoic (15:1), heptadecanoic (17:0), cis-10heptadecanoic (17:1), and eicosanoid (21:0) acids were also identified at different concentrations. Considering the biochemical properties of Gundelia species, it shows that they can be consumed as food and also used pharmacologically.

Comprehensive Evaluation of the Relationships Between Grape Skin Color/Ripening Time and Antioxidative Capacity, Some Phytochemicals, and Fatty Acid Compositions of Their Seeds

Çakır, Atilla; Odabaşıoğlu, Mehmet İlhan; Karaca Sanyürek, Nesrin; Aydın, Sevinç

It has been proven that grapes, which are widely cultivated around the world, have positive health effects. However, the phytochemical composition of lesser-known local varieties of Vitis vinifera L., which has a very wide range of varieties, is still being studied. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of skin color and ripening time on the phytochemical compositions of grape seeds. As a plant material local grape varieties cultivated in Southeastern Anatolia (Turkey) were used. The results showed that grape skin color has an effect on vitamin K1, vitamin K2, vitamin D3, δ‑tocopherol, stigmasterol, ergosterol, myristic acid, oleic acid, trans-elaidic acid, and the monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) and saturated fatty acid (SFA) contents of seeds. The seeds of grape varieties with colored skins were richer in K2, D3, stigmasterol, oleic acid, trans-elaidic acid, and MUFAs, while the seeds of grape varieties with white skins were richer in K1, δ‑tocopherol, ergosterol, and SFAs. The ripening time of the grapes was found to have a partial effect on the fatty acid compositions of the seeds, but without any effect on linoleic acid contents. As the ripening time was delayed, there was an increase in oleic acid and MUFA contents of the seeds, while there was a decrease in SFA contents. In general, increased vitamin K1 contents of the seeds were parallel to decreases in vitamins K2, D2, and D3, as well as α‑tocopherol content and antioxidant activity. The seeds of grape varieties that have colored skins were found to have more suitable compound compositions for use in the production of functional foods that support human and animal health. In addition, it was concluded that grape berries that ripen late may be more favorable for grapeseed oil production.

The influence of dietary antioxidant on ovarian eggs and levels of vitamin E, C, A, astaxanthin, β-carotene and oxidative stres in tissues of Astacus leptodactylus (Eschscholtz)

    Barim-Oz, O.; Sahin, H.

The experiment was conducted to determine the most effective antioxidant (among the vitamin E (VE), vitamin C (VC), vitamin A (VA), astaxanthine (AX), beta-carotene (beta C)) on the ovarian egg number and size, level of VE, VC, VA, AX, beta C and oxidative stress (as malondialdehyde (MDA)) in the hepatopancreas, ovarian, gills and muscle tissue during ovarian development of Astacus leptodactylus. One control (C) and five experimental diets (EE, EC, EA, EAX and E beta C) were prepared. The EE, EC, EA, EAX and E beta C groups were formed by added 150 mg kg-1 VE, 200 mg kg-1 VC, 240 mg kg-1 VA, 200 mg kg-1 AX and 200 mg kg-1 beta C to diet C, respectively. At the end of the experiment found that the dietary antioxidants increased ovarian egg number and size and reduced the level of MDA in the tissues. Ovarian egg number and size were highest in the EE and EAX diet groups in the comparison to control (p< 0.001). The level of MDA in the tissues was lowest in the EAX diet group in the comparison to control (p< 0.001). The highest levels of VE, VC, VA, AX and beta C were found in the hepatopancreas and ovarian compared with muscle and gills. The highest level of MDA also was determined in the ovarian according to other tissues. In conclusion, the VE and AX in broodstock diets were the most effective antioxidants on the ovarian egg number and size of A. leptodactylus.

Determination of phytochemical characteristics of the extract of Zea mays with Saccharomyces boulardii

Erecevit, Pinar; Kirbag, Sevda; Yilmaz, Okkes

Fatty acid, vitamin, phytosterol, flavonoid, and resveratrol contents and antimicrobial activities of Zea mays L. (corn) extracts treated with Saccharomyces boulardii were determined and compared. The total fatty acid, vitamin, and phytosterol contents in corn extract were at certain levels. It was detected that total fatty acid levels and vitamin contents of corn extracts prepared with Saccharomyces boulardii increased; however, flavonoid contents decreased at different rates. In addition to this, it was observed that naringin, resveratrol, and myricetin flavonoids were present in the extracts that contained S. boulardii. In the study, it was noticed that Z. mays L. (corn) had antioxidant and antimicrobial activities at different rates. It was observed that S. boulardii developing in extracts obtained from plants affected bioactive compounds at different rates.
