Recycling Ti1.0Nb0.3Ta0.07Zr0.05 Conventional Alloys: Production of Non-equimolar TiZrCrNb0.3Ta0.07 Medium Entropy Alloys with the Addition of Cr for Improved In Vitro Corrosion Resistance

A non-equimolar TiZrCrNb0.3Ta0.07 medium entropy alloy (MEA) was successfully designed as theoretical and produced by arc-melting method from Ti1.0Nb0.3Ta0.07Zr0.05 (TNTZ) scraps for possible usage in biomedical applications in this study. The main aim of this study is to find an alternative way to recycle with a reduced carbon footprint the available TNTZ conventional alloy and convert it to a value-added product during this recycling such as medium entropy alloys (MEAs) via using less energy. To examine the microstructural changes induced by the annealing process, scanning electron microscopy was employed. The chemical composition of the HEAs was assessed using energy-dispersive spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Additionally, x-ray diffraction analysis was used to determine the crystallographic structure and phase composition of HEAs. Furthermore, in order to evaluate the electrochemical corrosion performance of the alloys, comprehensive in vitro corrosion tests were conducted in a simulated body fluid solution, specifically Hanks's Balanced Salt Solution. Some elemental segregation has been observed after the annealing process. A big migration of Zr and Cr elements was observed in the samples from the interdendritic region to the dendritic area during the annealing process. This segregation resulted in approximately 1.4 times increase in the hardness of the MEA. The electrochemical corrosion results showed that the in vitro resistance of the MEAs was higher than that of its conventional scraps.

In-vitro corrosion and surface properties of PVD-coated β-type TNTZ alloys for potential usage as biomaterials: Investigating the hardness, adhesion, and antibacterial properties of TiN, ZrN, and CrN film

    Ali, L.A.; Dikici, B.; Aslan, N.; Yilmazer, Y.; Sen, A.; Yilmazer, H.; Niinomi, M.

In this study, the corrosion and surface properties of non-toxic and non-allergenic β-type Ti–29Nb–13Ta–4.6Zr alloys (TNTZ) coated with TiN, ZrN, and CrN layers using the PVD technique were investigated under in-vitro conditions. The coatings' hardness, adhesion resistance, and antibacterial properties were also studied, with a focus on their potential usage as biomaterials. The corrosion tests were conducted using potentiodynamic polarization, the hardness tests were conducted using the Knoop method, and the adhesion tests were conducted using pull-off tests. The wetting properties of the coatings were examined through contact angle and 3D morphological analysis. The coatings were characterized using SEM-EDS and XRD. The results showed that the adhesion resistance of all coatings was significantly higher than the expected adhesion strength for biomaterial coatings, while their corrosion resistance was higher compared to the uncoated alloy. Besides, the study demonstrates the potential of TiN, ZrN, and CrN coatings on β-type TNTZ for use as a biomaterial with desirable surface and antibacterial properties.

Integrative production of new nanocomposites has been used to enhance favorable features of biomaterials for unlocking ultimate potential of different molecules. In the present study, advantageous properties of diamond like carbons (DLC) and germanium (Ge) like greater biocompatibility and antibacterial attributes were aimed to combined into a thin film. For this purpose, 400 nm DLC–Ge nanocomposite was coated on the borosilicate glasses via the magnetron sputtering and surface characteristics was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and The Raman spectrum. Biocompatibility analysis were performed by 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl) (MTT) cell viability assay and Hoechst 33258 fluorescent staining genotoxicity assessments on the human fibroblast cell line (HDFa). Finally, antibacterial properties of DLC–Ge nanocomposite coatings were investigated by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) and Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) bacterial attachment analysis. As a result of magnetron sputtering coating, nearly 400 nm thick DLC–Ge nanocomposite film showed a smooth, a non-porous, and a dense characteristic. Cell viability analysis showed that Ge–DLC coatings permits %95 cell surface growth of fibroblast cells. Also, there were no significant difference in aspect of nuclear abnormalities compared to the (−) control which showed nonmutagenic features of the thin film. Finally, antibacterial attachment analysis put forth that Ge–DLC coatings inhibits bacterial adhesion as %40 and %25 rates for P. aeruginosa and S. aureus bacterial strains, respectively. From these results, DLC–Ge nanocomposites could be proposed as a potential new biomaterial for various biomedical applications.
