- MakaleYalnız künye2018Scopus SJRQ2Phenotypic differentiation analysis: A case study in hybridizing Çoruh trout (Salmo coruhensis), Rize trout (Salmo rizeensis) and brown trout (Salmo trutta fario)
Kocabaş, Mehmet; Kutluyer, Filiz; Başçinar, Nadir
The aim of this study was to determine and compare the phenotypic variation in Çoruh trout (Salmo coruhensis), Rize trout (Salmo rizeensis), brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) and their native hybrids (S. rizeensis × S. t. fario; S. t. fario × S. coruhensis; S. rizeensis × S. coruhensis). The numbers and diameters of red and black spots were determined on operculum, fins and above and below the lateral line. The results from this study indicate that there were differences in spotting pattern, colour pattern or fin pigmentation traits between S. rizeensis, S. t. fario, S. coruhensis and their hybrids. Consequently, native S. rizeensis, S. t. fario and S. coruhensis were affected by interaction and phenotypic plastic aspects of traits in S. rizeensis were dominant in their hybrids (S. rizeensis × S. t. fario; S. rizeensis × S. coruhensis).

- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Scopus SJRQ3Anesthetic efficiency of 2-phenoxyethanol on broodstock of salmo munzuricus, a new trout species originating from munzur stream; [Munzur akarsuyu orijinli yeni bir alabalık türü olan salmo munzuricus’un anaç bireyleri üzerinde 2-fenoksietanol’ün anestezik etkinliği]
Can, Erkan; Başusta, Asiye; Karataş, Bilal
Salmo munzuricus is a newly-named species of trout that spreads through rivers flowing along the Munzur Valley National Park. The efficacy of anaesthetic 2-phenoxyethanol was evaluated in indigenous brown trout in the present study. Fish were divided into three weight classes: 100-200 g (W1), 200-400 g (W2) and 400-600 g (W3) and they were exposed to four concentrations of anaesthetic (0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 mL L-1). The lowest induction time was identified in the group W3 while the highest one was in the group W1. The lowest recovery time occurred after 73.2±3.83 sec in the group W3 and the highest one was 136±31.46 sec in the group W1. The recovery times were increased with increasing the concentration of 2-phenoxyethanol in the group W1. However, recovery times in the groups W2 and W3 were significantly longer than observed in W1, generally. Besides, it was indicated that fish size affected induction times and recovery times. As a result of the present study, the most appropriate concentrations were determined as 0.4 mL L-1 at weights of 100-400 g while 0.5 mL L-1 at weights of 400-600 g for 2-phenoxyethanol in Salmo munzuricus broodstock.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2016Scopus SJRQ4Comparison of number and shape of parr marks in three species of the genus Salmo and two ecotypes of cultured brown trout Salmo trutta from Turkey
Kocabas, M.; Bascinar, N.; Kutluyer, F.
This study focused on the variation in number and shape of parr marks in three fish species of the genus Salmo [S. abanticus Tortonese, (1954), S. caspius Kessler, (1877) and S. labrax Pallas, (1814)] and two ecotypes of cultured brown trout [S. trutta macrostigma (Dumeril, 1858) and S. trutta fario Linnaeus, (1758)]. The brown trouts were collected from 11 streams in Turkey by electrofishing and transferred to the laboratory in an aerated container and then stocked in the adaptation tanks. Artificially fertilized eggs were incubated and larvae were maintained in fiberglass tanks and the variations in number and shape of parr marks in all five groups were studied for one year. The data collected indicated that there were significant differences in the number and size (length and width) of parr marks among the groups (p<0.05). The highest number of parr marks (11-13) was recorded in S. trutta macrostigma. Parr marks on the skin of S. trutta. macrostigma was found to remain stable during development.

- MakaleYalnız künye2013Scopus SJRQ3EFFECTS OF SEAWATER ACCLIMATIZATION ON GILL Na+-K+-ATPase ACTIVITIES AND CHLORIDE CELLS IN RAINBOW TROUT (Oncorhynchus mykiss) AND BROWN TROUT (Salmo trutta forma fario)
Kizak, V.; Ozden, O.; Guner, Yusuf
In this study, rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) (162.7 +/- 3.03 g) and brown trout (Salmo trutta forma fario) (160.9 +/- 2.94 g) were transferred to full-strength seawater (36.5 gl(-1)) for directly and gradually (21 days), then changes in gill Na+-K+-ATPase activity and size of chloride cells associated with environmental salinity were investigated and also survival of trouts were evaluated in seawater. All fish died when brown trouts were transferred into seawater directly but rainbow trouts survived 50 - 58.3 %. However, significant difference was recorded between brown and rainbow trouts in terms of survival rates by gradual acclimation. Survival of brown trout and rainbow trout that were transferred in seawater gradually, was 66.7 - 75 % and 83.3 - 91.7 %, respectively (p < 0.05). Gill chloride cell sizes in both species increased at 36.5 gl(-1) salinity. The lowest sectional area of chloride cells was determined at the point of death in brown trouts which were transferred directly. Following direct transfer to seawater, the largest sectional area of chloride cells were determined in rainbow trout. There are significant differences between acclimated and non-acclimated fish in terms of chloride cell sizes and Na+-K+-ATPase activities (p < 0.05). The highest gill Na+-K+-ATPase activity was in brown trouts which were transferred gradually, while the lowest activity was detected in freshwater phase. According to the results, gradually acclimated trouts can perform better adaptation than their directly acclimated counterparts.

- MakaleYalnız künye2013Scopus SJRQ3Comparison of Growth Performance, Gonadal Structure and Erythrocyte Size in Triploid and Diploid Brown Trout (Salmo trutta fario L, 1758)
Kizak, Volkan; Güner, Yusuf; Türel, Murat; Kayim, Murathan
The aim of this study was to compare growth, gonadal structure and red blood cell sizes of triploid and diploid brown trout (Salmo trutta fario). Triploidy was induced by providing a heat shock treatment to the fertilized eggs. From the 18th month post-fertilization triploid (TBT) and control diploid (CBT) brown trout groups were investigated up to 32nd month. Survival, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio, condition factor, relative growth rate, absolute growth rate, gonadosomatic index, hepatosomatic index and carcass yield were determined in both groups. It has been determined that the triploid fish showed greater live weight than diploid fish despite the difference was not significant (P>0.05). In triploid group triploidisation success was obtained as 95% and male/female ratio was found as 44.4-55.6%. The red blood cells were significantly larger in triploids than diploid ones (P<0.05). Regarding histological section of gonads, triploidy resulted in reduced gonadal development in female, while triploid males seem to exhibit normal gonadal development. Our results suggest that since triploid females could grow more than males, the growth performance studies on triploid brown trout should be performed with all-female stocks under fish farming practices especially for the production of large size trout.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2011Scopus SJRQ3Comparison of the survival and growth performance in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) fry
Kizak, Volkan; Guner, Yusuf; Turel, Murat; Can, Erkan; Kayim, Murathan
Rainbow trout is an intensively cultured species because of their more cultivable character than brown trout. Culture of brown trout could not be expanded due to low growth performance of brown trout compared to rainbow trout. This experiment was conducted in a commercial trout farm, Aegean area (Turkey). Growth performances and survivals of rainbow and brown trouts from fry to fingerling was observed for 155 days. Growth performances, feed conversion rates (FCR) and survivals were determined. Initial weights of rainbow and brown trouts were 0.1 +/- 0.01 g. Final weights were 26.5 +/- 5.19 and 12.97 +/- 2.74 g, respectively at the end of the experiment. Survival and FCR of rainbow and brown trouts were 83.9, 80 and 0.59, 0.61% respectively. As a result, there is a similarity between these two trout species in point of survivals and FCR's although, growth performance was obviously better than brown trout in early development of rainbow trout.
