SOME PHYTOCHEMICAL CONTENTS AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITIES OF TWO PRANGOS LINDL. (UMBELLIFERA) SPECIES GROWN IN TURKEY

Hayta, Şükrü; Aydin, Sevinç; Topdemir, Aykut

The genus Prangos is a member of the Apiaceae family, and it has been a focus of the attention of researchers due to its high nutritional value and some special medical properties. In this study, the total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant activities of the leaf and fruit extracts of the Prangos ferulacea and Prangos uloptera species belonging to this genus were studied, and the properties of these two species were compared to each other. In the study, the Folin-Ciocalteu method was used for the analysis of the total phenolic content, methanolic formaldehyde was used for the total flavonoid content, and both analyses were carried out with a UV-VIS spectrophotometer device. The antioxidant activity of the specimens was measured based on the Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) method. It was found that the P. ferulacea species had higher total phenolic and flavonoid content values than the P. uloptera species. The P. ferulacea species was also more effective in terms of antioxidant activity, which is known to be associated with these properties. When the fruit and leaf extracts of each species were compared, it was found that the total phenolic and flavonoid content of the fruit extract of the P. uloptera species was higher than that of its leaf extract, and the antioxidant activity of the fruit extract was also higher in proportion to these values. In the P. ferulacea species, as opposed to the case of P. uloptera, all values except for the total flavonoid values were higher in the leaf extract than the fruit extract.

ANTI-UREASE, TOTAL PHENOLIC CONTENT AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITIES OF SOME Inula L. (ASTERACEAE) TAXA IN TURKEY

Sevindik, Emre; Aydin, Sinem; Paksoy, Mehmet Yavuz; Sokmen, Bahar Bilgin

The genus Inula belongs to family Asteraceae and it is medicinally important because it possesses cytotoxic, anticancer, hepatoprotective, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of this research was to explore antioxidant and anti-urease activities of fifteen Inula taxa in Turkey. Ethanol extracts of Inula taxa were obtained by Soxhlet extraction. Antioxidant activity was determined through total antioxidant activity, total phenolic content and copper reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) analyses. The highest total phenolic content and total antioxidant capacity were found in I. orientalis (158.54±0.002 µg GAE/mL) and I. macrocephala (189.16±0.002 µg AAE/mL). CUPRAC activity increases with the increasing concentration of the extracts and the standard. Moreover, all the tested plants exhibited better anti-urease activity than standard thiourea except for I. anatolica and I. thapsoides subsp. thapsoides. Results obtained from this study demonstrate that Inula species might be utilized as a probable natural source in the pharmaceutical and food industries but further and more specific studies are needed to determine active antioxidative and anti-urease compounds in the extracts.

THE EFFECT OF PENDIMETHALIN HERBICIDE ON ANTIOXIDANT SYSTEM IN SAFFLOWER

    Beker-Akbulut, Gulcin

Pendimethaline is a dinitroaniline herbicide compound which selectively controls weeds. It is a cell division and growth inhibitor. In this study, pendimethalin herbicide was applied to Dincer and Remzibey cultivars of Carthamus tinctorius L. in 0.004-0.01 M concentration range after germination. The effects of pendimethalin upon peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione-Stransferase (GST) and total phenolic content were investigated on the 24, 48 and 72 hours following the treatment. POD, APX, SOD, CAT and GST activities were increased on the 24, 48 and 72 hours in Dincer while decreased at 72 hour in Remzibey. GSH and GR activity were decreased at 72 hour in Dincer and Remzibey. Total phenolic content decreased at 48 and 72 hours in Dincer and Remzibey. In this study, we determined that pendimethalin herbicide affected the antioxidant enzyme activities in Dincer and Remzibey.

Effects of Vacuum Ohmic Evaporation on Some Quality Properties of Sour Cherry Juice Concentrates

    Sabancı, Serdal; Icier, Filiz

Sour cherry juice (SJ) having total soluble solid (TSS) content of 19.2 % was concentrated to 65 % TSS by applying vacuum ohmic evaporation (VOE) and vacuum evaporation (VE) methods under constant absolute pressure (25 kPa). Total monomeric anthocyanin content (TMAC) of sour cherry concentrate (65 % TSS) was found in the range of 1561.67–1777.38 mg/L whereas total phenolic content (TPC) varied in the range of 9,071.22–78,347.53 mg/L concentrate. TPC and TMAC values of juice concentrates were affected less from VOE process compared to VE (p < 0.05) while there was no significant difference between the total antioxidant activities of SJ concentrates obtained by both methods (p > 0.05). TMAC and TPC values increased as the voltage gradient applied increased (p < 0.05). VOE process preserved the color properties of juice concentrates better compared to the VE process. It was concluded that VOE method could be an alternative fast evaporation method to obtain high-quality fruit juice concentrates.

Total phenolic contents and free-radical scavenging activities of grape (Vitis vinifera L.) and grape products

Keser, Serhat; Celik, Sait; Turkoglu, Semra

Grape is one of the world's largest fruit crops, with an approximate annual production of 58 million metric tons, and it is well known that the grape skins, seeds and stems, waste products generated during wine and grape juice processing, are rich sources of polyphenols. It contains flavonoids, phenolic acids and stilbenes. In this study, we tried to determine antioxidant properties and phenolic contents of grape and grape products (fresh fruit, seed, dried fruit, molasses, pestil, vinegar) of ethanol and water extracts. Antioxidant properties of extracts were investigated by DPPH center dot, ABTS(center dot+), superoxide, H2O2 scavenging, reducing power, metal chelating activity and determination of total phenolic contents. The seed extracts revealed highest ABTS(center dot+), DPPH center dot, H2O2 scavenging and reducing power activities. Furthermore, these extracts showed higher total phenolic contents than other grape product extracts.
