Polat, Berivan Yilmazer; Savaş, Sedat; Polat, Alper
Anti-tank weapons are among the infantry weapons used by the armies of many countries. Anti-tank rockets and explosives such as TNT, generally used for armour piercing, are also frequently used in terrorist attacks. These attacks damage the protection facilities built from reinforced concrete. Rockets or similar explosives’ rapid speed and burst temperatures pierce reinforced concrete during strikes, resulting in casualties and damage to crucial strategic structures. This study aimed to devise an economic and applicable reinforced concrete plate that could absorb the impact of anti-tank rockets and Trinitrotoluene (TNT) type explosives. Therefore, 5 different samples, produced from C50 reinforced concrete and 150×150 cm in size, were formed by combining plates of different numbers and thicknesses. Also, a sample, which was a single thick plate, was prepared. In destructive testing, Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG-7) was used as the anti-tank rocket launcher. As a result of this study, the impact damage was reduced with hollow concrete plate geometries, and recommendations were developed for complete prevention.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Scopus SJRQ3Electrochemical Detection of Ivermectin Used for the Treatment of COVID-19 with Glutardialdehyde-Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode
Koçak, Berna; İpek, Yeliz
In this study, the surface of the glassy carbon electrode was modified with glutardialdehyde. The modified glassy carbon electrode showed electrocatalytic activity against ivermectin. The glassy carbon electrode modified with glutardialdehyde showed high sensitivity, selectivity, and stability in the determination of ivermectin. The peak current of glutardialdehyde oxidation obtained by differential pulse voltammetry decreased inversely with the ivermectin concentration. Ivermectin inhibited the oxidation reaction of glutardialdehyde and caused a decrease in current. This change made the analysis of ivermectin electrochemically possible. In order to demonstrate the applicability of the developed method in real samples, recovery studies were carried out in tap water and urine. The highest sensitivity (0.45 µA/((µmol·L−1)(cm2))) was achieved with urine sample and the lowest detection limit as 2.66 × 10−6 mol·L−1 was obtained with BRT solution sample. As the safety and effectiveness of synthetic drugs remain in doubt, researchers are trying to develop natural medicines from medicinal plants. Herein, ethyl acetate, methanol and water extracts from the Heracleum humile plant were obtained by an ultrasonic-assisted extraction process and the aim was to evaluate some biological effects of the extracts due to the limited data on the pharmacological properties of Heracleum humile in the literature. Weak antibacterial activity was observed on tested bacterial species. The minimum inhibitory concentration and the minimum bactericidal concentration values ranged from 250 to 500 μg/mL. In addition, cytotoxic activity was determined using the MTT test. The strongest findings were determined for ethyl acetate extract on the MDA-MB-231 cell lines at the 48th hour (IC50:97.94 μg/mL), followed by the MCF-7 cell lines at the 24th hour (IC50:103.9 μg/mL). All extracts of Heracleum humile contained mainly flavonoids, phenolic acids and their derivatives, i. e., well-known compounds that possess numerous biological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antimicrobial etc. The study results could provide important information that Heracleum humile could be a potential candidate as a natural enzyme inhibitor. It can be concluded that these extracts could be useful in the elementary step of improving novel plant-derived multifunctional pharmaceuticals.

İncele - Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2021Fine–kinney-based occupational risk assessment using fuzzy best and worst method (f-bwm) and fuzzy mairca
Gul, Muhammet; Mete, Suleyman; Serin, Faruk; Celik, Erkan
The best-worst method (BWM) proposed by Rezaei (Omega 53:49–57, [1]) is an MCDM method used to achieve the weights of the criteria by making fewer pairwise comparisons and using more consistent decision matrices. In this chapter, instead of crisp numbers, triangular fuzzy numbers that reflect the uncertainty well in real-world problems are used in integration with the BWM method (Guo and Zhao in Knowl Based Syst 121:23–31, [2]) in determining factor weights. Using the fuzzy best and worst method (F-BWM), a model based on Fine–Kinney occupational health and safety risk assessment method was developed for the first time in the literature. Three parameters of Fine–Kinney method are weighted by the mathematical models of F-BWM. Then, the risks are prioritized by fuzzy multi-attribute ideal real comparative analysis (F-MAIRCA). A case study was conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of the approach, and besides this case study, a comparative study was also conducted to test the validity of the proposed approach. This approach led to the conclusion that Fine–Kinney’s method, BWM, MAIRCA, and triangular fuzzy sets make the risk decision-making process more dynamic, taking into account the benefits of these methods individually or in integration.

Symphytum species, commonly known as comfrey, hold a long history of folk medicinal uses for healing wounds, bone fractures and other pain resulting from inflammation. However, many species belonging to this genus have not yet been scientifically investigated and hence investigation in this regard is warranted. In the present research, S. aintabicum extracts prepared by different extraction techniques (homogenizer assisted extraction, infusion and maceration) were assayed for their chemosystematic attributes (total phenolic, flavonoid) as well as bioactive compound contents, antioxidant and enzyme inhibition potentials. For instance, the extracts were found to possess phenolic and flavonoid levels ranging from 35.50 to 112.25 mg GAE/g and 2.54–25.12 mg RE/g, respectively. In general, the extracts displayed significant antioxidant activity. However, methanolic and infusion extracts were observed as the most potent radical scavengers and reducing agents, most likely related to their phenolic content. The extracts also showed metal chelating power and total antioxidant capacity in phosphomolybdenum assay. Moreover, while all extracts showed inhibition on amylase, only the methanolic extracts acted as inhibitors of cholinesterases and tyrosinase, most probably due to their relatively higher flavonoid content. The findings also indicated that the extraction method as well as the solvent type used to more or less affect the yield of the bioactive compounds and extracts’ bioactivity reported herein. Hence, as a first report highlighting the in vitro pharmacological properties of S. aintabicum, promising results were revealed from the quantitative chemosystematic analysis of bioactive components present and as sources of antioxidants and enzyme inhibitors against key human illnesses, thus providing scope for potential applications in phytomedicine development.

Pure and three types of carbon additives including graphite, graphene, and multi-walled carbon nanotube added into polypropylene (PP) composites as a vibration damping component and sound insulator material in the automotive sector were investigated by using vibrational damping, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), tensile, hardness and acoustic behavior tests. According to the obtained results, porosity and distribution of carbon in the polymer matrix are key parameters on the composite parameters causing its reduction of tensile strength and its brittle behavior. Moreover, it seems that 0.01 wt.% graphene and 1 wt.% graphite added PP composites show the highest impact damping properties and also increase the storage and loss modulus of the composite while decreasing the glass transition temperature. The loss factor obtained from DMA and vibration damping test indicated the damping capacity in the interphase of carbon added PP composites depends only on the load applied and not sensitivity upon the natural frequency of the composite system. Depending on the morphological differentiation, graphene added PP composites decrease the sound transmission loss while the 0.1 wt.% MWCNT added PP composites increase sound transmission loss which makes it an alternative vibration damping component.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ2Investigation of Tie Bars Axial Force Demands in Composite Plate Shear Walls—Concrete Filled
Polat, Erkan; Kenarangi, Hadi; Bruneau, Michel
Tie bars axial force demands due to concrete dilation and prying action were investigated through numerical studies. In the first part of this study, the Karagozian and Case Concrete model, which proved to provide reasonable in-plane flexural cyclic inelastic wall response while accounting for concrete dilation effect, was used to investigate the variation of confinement inside the infill concrete, the distribution of passive confining pressures at the steel–concrete interface, and the resulting tie bar axial force demands. Finite element analyses involving C-PSW/CF having different tie spacings, wall depths, and wall thicknesses were performed. In the second part of this study, the influence of plate local buckling on tie bar axial force demand was investigated and explained by prying action. A separate finite element study was performed to investigate the significance of prying action and equations were developed from free-body diagrams. The results showed the significance of the passive confining pressures due to concrete dilation, and prying action due to local plate buckling, on imparting axial forces in tie bars. Neither of these behavior are currently considered as design parameters for tie bars. The numerical analyses and results presented here are intended to provide useful insights and direction for the design and instrumentation of future C-PSW/CF experiments by the broader research community.

Aslan, N.; Aksakal, B.; Aksoy, M.E.
Boron doped (5 %, 10%, and 15 wt.%) Hydroxyapatite (B-HA) biocomposites were syntesized and coated on 316L SS and NiTi (Ni-45Ti) metallic substrates by using the electrophoretic deposition process (EPD). The morphological and structural characterization of the coatings was executed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction devices (XRD). Antibacterial tests were conducted using Escherichia coli (E. coli, JM103) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus, ATCC29293) microorganisms. The mitochondrial activity assay (MTT)-[3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] was used to examine cell viability and cytotoxicity in Saos-2 osteoblast cells. HA and boron peaks, as well as B-TCP and metallic components, were detected in XRD examinations. Porous morphologies were generated on the surface with boron doped B-HA coatings, as revealed by SEM views. Antibacterial activity studies revealed that both metallic coating groups, notably with boron doping, demonstrated antibacterial activity against gram-negative E. coli and gram-positive S. aureus. The antibacterial activity of the 316L group was shown to be better than that of the NiTi group in comparisonal testing. The syntesized boron-doped biocomposite coatings did not have any detrimental effects on living cells, according to cell viability studies. The cell viability rate was found to be greater in NiTi coatings than in 316 SS coatings, and the impact was amplified by the addition of boron.

- MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ1Improving dielectric properties, electrical conductivity, and thermal properties of biodegradable polymer composites prepared with lanthanum
Torgut, Gulben; Ayhan, Nagihan Karaaslan; Acikses, Aslisah
The precipitation method was adapted to synthesize the poly(ε-caprolactone-copolymer- ethylene oxide) (ε-CL-co-EO) composite with the salt of lanthanum (La), a rare earth element. This salt was incorporated into the polymer of different weight percentages to study how it affects the thermal and dielectric properties of the polymer. The resulting products were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis. XRD and SEM data show that the polymer mixes homogeneously with the metal salt. Thermal degradation data show that the thermal stability of composites synthesized with La is lower than that of pure polymer. The dielectric properties and A.C conductivity measurements of the composites were investigated by using impedance analyzer in the frequency range (100 Hz to 20 kHz) at room temperature. The electrical property results of (ε-CL-co-EO)/La composites displayed that dielectric constant (έ), dielectric loss (ε"), tan delta (tan δ) and A.C electrical conductivity (σac) increase with increasing La content. The largest conductivity of (ε-CL-co-EO)/La composite filled with 20 wt% La was 8.80 × 10−8 S/cm, which was 162% times pure (ε-CL-co-EO). In addition, impedance (IZI) of composites was evaluated from the dielectric data. This procedure is eco-friendly and easy to handle, which provides a promising route to polymer composites in the application of the conductivity field.

Polat, E.G.
Coronavirus disease 2019 brings about the economic damage and loss of life. Thus, demand of personal protective equipment continues to increase, consequently an increase in infectious equipment pollution. Most of these wastes threaten the environment and increase the spread of diseases. This paper provides a research hypothesis whether effective medical waste management would prevent the possible impacts of coronavirus disease 2019-related waste issues on environment at the city level. To confirm this hypothesis, installation of waste treatment centre is addressed. Then, by incorporating uncertain waste generation amounts utilizing Jimenez method, a pickup routing is addressed to decide the pickup routes between the waste treatment centre and residential area. This study is first to assign the optimistic, realistic and pessimistic scenarios of the uncertain waste generation using time series analysis method and waste generation formulation. Also, L-type matrix is used to define, assess and prioritize the environmental and operational risks on waste generation formulation and to provide risk reaction strategies. Practicality of these approaches is illustrated in the case of Turkey. The computational results reveal the effectiveness of the integrated method, which ensures practical and theoretical insights controlling the waste generation to prevent virus propagation for health authorities.
