- MakaleYalnız künye2022Scopus SJRQ2Synthesis, characterization, pH-sensitive swelling and antimicrobial activities of chitosan–graft-poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) hydrogel composites for biomedical applications
Torğut, Gülben; Yazdıç, Ferit Can; Gürler, Nedim
In this paper, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was graft copolymerized onto chitosan (CHI) at different ratios using a radical initiator. The grafted hydrogel composites were then characterized by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform ınfrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). Swelling behavior of the hydrogels was investigated at different pH and different times. The antimicrobial activity of the chitosan-graft-HEMA (CHI-HEMA) against gram-negative bacteria and gram-positive bacteria was studied by the standard agar well diffusion assay method. The CHI-HEMA 1:1 and CHI-HEMA 1:2 showed an obvious antimicrobial effect against six test strains. The CHI-HEMA 1:1 and CHI-HEMA 1:2 exhibited a highly significant increase (p < 0.01) in diameter of the inhibition zones compared with the standard antibiotics. Furthermore, CHI-HEMA 1:1 presented the highest antimicrobial activity against all test strains with a significant difference (p < 0.01) compared with CHI-HEMA 1:2. Meanwhile, the decreasing order of the average sensitivity to CHI-HEMA 1:1 and CHI-HEMA 1:2 was observed to be S. marcescens > E. coli > S. aureus subsp. aureus > S. enteritidis > E. faecalis > E. aerogenes. These results indicate potential application of CHI-HEMA 1:1 and CHI-HEMA 1:2 graft hydrogels as a novel and efficient antimicrobial agent in biomedical fields.

Farooqi, Ammad Ahmad; Ozbey, Ulku; Pimentel, Tatiana Colombo; Attar, Rukset
The magical little fruits have started to gain attention because of their cancer chemopreventive roles against different cancers. More recently, cancer inhibitory properties of blueberry extracts and isolated bioactive constituents have been described that provide new mechanistic insights. However, there are visible knowledge gaps in our understanding about metastasis inhibitory role of blueberries in xenografted mice. Despite mainstream popularization of cancer chemopreventive role of blueberries, many questions remain about their precise role in the regulation of deregulated oncogenic cascades in metastasis. It will be really exciting to consider how new scientific breakthroughs in future might propel the science of nutrigenomics to a more sophisticated level of inquiry.

Waini, Iskandar; Khan, Umair; Zaib, Aurang; Ishak, Anuar; Pop, Ioan; Akkurt, Nevzat
The use of hybrid nanoparticles to increase heat transfer is a favorable area of research, and therefore, numerous scientists, researchers, and scholars have expressed their appreciation for and interest in this field. Determining the dynamic role of nanofluids in the cooling of microscopic electronic gadgets, such as microchips and related devices, is also one of the fundamental tasks. With such interesting and useful applications of hybrid nanofluids in mind, the main objective is to deal with the analysis of the unsteady flow towards a shrinking sheet in a water-based hybrid ferrite nanoparticle in porous media, with heat sink/source effects. Moreover, the impact of these parameters on heat and mass transfers is also reported. Numerical results are obtained using MATLAB software. Non-unique solutions are determined for a certain shrinking strength, in addition to the unsteadiness parameter. The mass transfer and friction factor increase for the first solution due to the hybrid nanoparticles, but the heat transfer rate shows the opposite effect.

- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2021Fine–kinney occupational risk assessment method and its extensions by fuzzy sets: A state-of-the-art review
Gul, Muhammet; Mete, Suleyman; Serin, Faruk; Celik, Erkan
The Fine–Kinney method (Fine in J Saf Res 3:157–166, 1971; Kinney and Wiruth in Practical risk analysis for safety management. Naval Weapons Center, pp 1–20, 1976), which was first introduced as an occupational health and safety risk analysis tool in the 1970s, is a systematic methodology that provides a mathematical formula for calculating the risk that arises due to a specified hazard. In the traditional version of Fine–Kinney as suggested in its original version, a risk score (RS) is calculated as a result of mathematical multiplication of probability (P), exposure (E), and consequence (C) parameters. These calculated risk scores are used to establish priorities for the corrective efforts in order to eliminate risks or reduce their effects to a reasonable level. This simple and useful method is preferred and implemented by small and medium-sized enterprises. In the academic literature, it has been applied for many risk analysis problems, although it includes several drawbacks recently revealed. In this method, no weight assignment is made for each risk parameter. Also, it is hard to assess consequence, exposure, and probability, precisely. Multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) is a pool of methods used in occupational health and safety risk analysis both by international standard-setting organizations and scholars from the literature. In classical MCDM methods, performance values and weights of decision criteria are known precisely and are specified with crisp numbers. However, many real-world problems contain uncertainties, and the knowledge and judgment of experts cannot be expressed precisely. Fuzzy-based MCDM methods, which are developed to reflect types and degrees of uncertainties better, produce more accurate results compared to classical methods. In this chapter, we first present the basics of Fine–Kinney method, including its implementing procedure, basic terminology, and drawbacks. Then, we provide a state-of-the-art review of Fine–Kinney occupational risk assessment method and its extensions by fuzzy sets. Graphical results obtained from the review are demonstrated to show the current state. Future work suggestions are also included to the chapter to show the possible gaps and possible opportunities.

- MakaleYalnız künye2022Scopus SJRQ1The influence of battery distance on a hybrid air-cooled cylindrical lithium-ion battery phase change material thermal management system for storing solar energy
Akkurt, Nevzat; Aghakhani, S.; Mahmoud, Mustafa Z.; Tag El Din, ElSayed M.
The cooling of a lithium-ion battery pack made up of three cylindrical batteries in a channel is studied using the finite element technique in this research. The phase change material (PCM) is surrounded by a laminar flow of air. The solid PCM fraction values and the average temperature of each battery and battery pack at various periods were studied by varying the distance between the batteries from 7 to 10 mm and adjusting the speed from 0.1 to 0.3 cm/s. When compared to other batteries surrounding this battery, the left battery had the lowest temperature and the maximum quantity of solid PCM was generated at various periods, according to the findings of this article. At 0.1 cm/s, the distance 7 mm is the greatest and the distance 8 mm is the lowest in the left battery, the distance 10 mm is the largest in the center battery, the distance 8 mm is the lowest in the right battery, and the distance 8 mm generates the least amount of solid PCM in the battery pack. The second and third batteries, as well as the battery pack, have the lowest average temperature across various distances of the batteries due to a distance of 10 mm between them. Increasing the speed from 0.1 to 0.3 cm/s causes the temperature to decrease in a time-dependent manner.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ1Extension of FEMA and SMUG models with Bayesian best-worst method for disaster risk reduction
Yanilmaz, Sumeyye; Baskak, Dilber; Yucesan, Melih; Gul, Muhammet
Turkey is one of the countries that face many natural and man-made disasters. The entire geography of Turkey is affected by these disasters and the secondary disasters resulting from them. Tunceli is located in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Turkey and is a disaster-prone region. Therefore, it is important to carry out an adaptable hazard analysis for the region and support the national disaster risk reduction struggle. In this study, a comprehensive disaster hazard analysis was conducted for Tunceli province, and potential mitigation measures were discussed. As methodological background, FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) and SMUG (Seriousness Manageability Urgency Growth) models, which are well-known methods, were extended under the Bayesian Best-Worst Method (BWM). Bayesian BWM is a pairwise comparison-based multi-criteria decision-making method that takes a probabilistic view of the experts' group decision without losing information, providing less pairwise comparison and higher consistency. Nine different disaster hazards for the Tunceli region are prioritized by the proposed approach. Initially, weights of the risk parameters in FEMA and SMUG and the priority values of disaster hazards based on each parameter were calculated. Then, ranking orders were determined. In addition, more precise evaluations were made for the results obtained with the credal ranking graphs. Some comparative studies were also included in the study to test the solidity of the approach. According to the results, both models showed that the top priority hazard for Tunceli is “earthquake”. Also, flood, mass movement, terrorism, and epidemics are hazards with higher priority to be taken into account. Considering the final preference values of disaster hazards for Tunceli province, the first three hazards for the FEMA model are earthquake with 0.192, mass movement with 0.141 and flood with 0.114, respectively. In the SMUG model, earthquake with 0.194, flood with 0.129 and epidemic disease with 0.120 are in the first three places.

- MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ3Evaluation of social factors within the circular economy concept for European countries
Kaya, Sema Kayapinar; Ayçin, Ejder; Pamucar, Dragan
The circular economy (CE) is a rapidly growing theme, particularly in the European Union (EU), that encourages the responsible and circular use of resources in the field of contributing to long-term development. The environmental and economic magnitude of development are frequently debated in the subject of CE whereas, social aspects have been only rarely and sporadically combined into the CE. Therefore, this study involves a multidisciplinary holistic framework of clustering methods and Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) for evaluating the CE paradigm in relation to EU countries' social growth. In terms of the social impact of CE strategies, the k-means cluster analysis was used to group the 27 EU members with similar social impact levels. Subsequently, a novel integrated CRITIC (The criteria importance through intercriteria correlation) and MEREC (Method based on the Removal Effects of Criteria) methods were employed for determining the weights of social indicators in order to balance the two weighting methods. In order to select the best country in each cluster, a novel extension of the hybrid MARCOS (Measurement of Alternatives and Ranking according to Compromise Solution) method combined with Power averaging and Heronian operator was developed. According to final solutions, Western European countries in the first cluster have the lowest unemployment and corruption rates, with the Netherlands having the best performance in this cluster. The second cluster includes countries with the lowest employment rates following university graduates between the ages of 20 and 64. Accordingly, Croatia is the best social performance in this cluster. Countries with the highest income distribution and unemployment rate are in the 3rd cluster, the best country in this group is Lithuania. Finally, the results obtained from the innovative MCDM methods have validated in order to demonstrate the proposed methodology's applicability.

- MakaleYalnız künye2022Scopus SJRQ2Fault location method on two-terminal transmission line using synchronized time information of traveling waves
Akmaz, Düzgün; Mamiş, Mehmet Salih
In this study, approximate derivative (AD) signal processing method using synchronous voltages data, based on the traveling wave theory, was developed to determine fault locations in transmission lines. The first aerial mode voltage signals were obtained by applying the Clarke transformation to the voltage signals that occur after a short circuit fault. Then, by taking the first AD of the aerial mode voltage signals, the traveling waves were obtained. Finally, the location of the fault was found by using the time difference information of the traveling waves, wave velocity value and transmission line length. The proposed signal processing method was found to be effective in determining the location of faults. It was tested and compared to the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) for various fault conditions. Based on the simulation results, the proposed method was found to have a slightly higher success rate than DWT, in general. Moreover, it can work with low sampling frequencies, and it provides a better resolution than DWT to display the traveling waves in noise conditions.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Scopus SJRQ1Numerical investigation the hydrodynamic parameters of the flow in a wavy corrugated channel using different turbulence models
Akbari, Omid Ali; Haghjoo, Hossein; Abed, Azher M.; Karimi, Mahsa; Maghzian, Ali; Shabani, Gholamreza Ahmadi Sheikh; Anvari, Amirmasoud; Akkurt, Nevzat; Toghraie, Davood
In this research, turbulent flow numerical models in a wavy channel were investigated. The studied channel is simulated in two dimensions and symmetrically in the range of Reynolds numbers from Re=10,000 to 80,000. The significant cause of this research is to investigate and determine the appropriate method for estimating the behavior of turbulent flow in a wavy channel. In this research, the behavior of turbulent flow in a wavy channel will be simulated in 7 different ways, which are k-ω SST, k-ϵ RN, k-ϵ Realizable, k−ϵ Standard, k-ω Standard, Reynolds stress and Spalart-Allmaras. The findings of this research show that the impacts of the presence of flow viscosity (friction) and the presence of adverse pressure gradients are factors that strongly affect the velocity profiles in the upstream areas of the corrugated section. Among the studied models, due to better compatibility and guessing of flow and hydrodynamic properties, k-ω SST methods and Reynolds and Spalart-Allmaras stress are introduced as the best methods for such geometries. On the other hand, increasing the accuracy of other turbulence methods is related to the flow physics and geometric structure of each problem. In this research, the hydrodynamic parameters of the flow such as pressure drop, skin friction factor, and dynamic pressure drop coefficient and vortex contours, and pressure are plotted and described.

Risk assessment of cadmium (Cd) for human health play a key role because of toxic effect. Researchers are undergoing constant development for modelling approaches to make a risk assessment. It was carried out a central composite design combining with response surface modeling to optimize and modeling of Cd2+ ions in this study. Also, this study was performed to provide information about possible risk associated with alcoholic beverage consumption. Some independent process parameters including contact time and pH were chosen for optimization. Under optimal parameters, 142.9 mg g−1 was determined as Cd2+ ions removal effectiveness. Significance independent parameters and their interactions were checked using analysis of variance. These results were verified by correlation coefficients (R2 = 0.9967) of the statistical prediction. Estimated daily intake (EDI) and target hazard quotients (THQ) were calculated, to assess health risk. The Cd2+ ions EDI values (µg/day/person) were less than the recommended dietary allowance values and also, its THQ value was less than 1, also. When the obtained results compared with the levels set by regulatory authorities, the studied alcoholic beverages consumption do not pose a toxicological risk. The aim of the current experimental study is to investigate the effect of waste textile dye absorbed almond shell on fresh and mechanical characteristics of self-compacting mortar (SCMs). In this context, eight SCMs were designed by substituting Violet Dye Solution adsorbed Almond shell (VDSA) at the rate of 0%, 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5%, 10.0%, 12.5%, 15.0% and 17.5% as a cement on weight basis including the control mix. To measure the rheological properties of SCMs, mini slump and V-Funnel tests were conducted. A total of 72 beams of 40x40x160 mm3 dimension specimens were casted and immersed in water curing at the end of the 7, 28 and 56 days to determine the mechanical parameters. 48 cubes of 50x50x50 mm3 dimensions were casted and kept in the curing tank to determine durability characteristics such as porosity, sorptivity and specific gravity. Quantitative analyses are also performed by using Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM), X-ray Diffraction Analysis (XRD), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). The experimental results indicated that as the content of VDSA enchases, a remarkable enhancement in flexural strength at early days age and 28 days age strength. Whereas, increasing the content of VDSA resulted in a considerable decrease in compressive strength higher than 5%.

- MakaleYalnız künye2022Scopus SJRQ1When did the North Anatolian fault reach southern Marmara, Turkey?
Karabacak, Volkan; Sançar, Taylan; Yildirim, Gökhan; Uysal, I. Tonguç
We dated syntectonic calcites on fault planes from the southern branch of the western North Anatolian fault (NAF) in northern Turkey using U-Th geochronology. We selected strike-slip faults that are kinematically related to the current regional strain field. The isotopic ages cluster around different periods during the past ~700 k.y. The most prominent cluster peak of 510.5 ± 9.5 ka (1σ) is consistent with the maximum cumulative strike-slip offset data and tectonic plate motions measured by GPS data, highlighting the fact that the present configuration of the NAF in the southern Marmara region started at ca. 500 ka or earlier. These new isotopic ages, combined with previous considerations of regional tectonics, reveal that faulting along the western NAF initiated primarily in the southern Marmara region at least a few hundred thousand years earlier than the timing suggested for the northern branch of the western NAF. This study presents an innovative approach to constrain the timing of initiation of currently active fault segments along the NAF in southern Marmara. U-Th geochronology of fault-hosted calcite thus has a wide application in determining absolute ages of fault episodes in wider shear zones along plate boundaries

Zabci, Cengiz; Sançar, Taylan; Tikhomirov, Dmitry; Ivy-Ochs, Susan; Vockenhuber, Christof; Friedrich, Anke M.; Yazici, Müge; Akçar, Naki
The active tectonics of Anatolia is mostly characterized by its westward motion with respect to Eurasia between the Hellenic subduction in the west and Arabia-Eurasia continental collision in the east. Although most of the deformation is suggested to be confined along Anatolia’s boundary elements, viz. the North and East Anatolian shear zones, recent studies indicate a higher magnitude of internal strain accumulation, especially along the parallel/subparallel strike-slip faults of its central province. We present the first morphochronology-based slip rate estimate for one of these strike-slip structures, the Ovacık Fault, by using cosmogenic36Cl dating of offset fluvial deposits. At the Köseler Site (39.3643°N, 39.1688°E), two faulted risers, bounding the alluvial fan with its subplanar surface (NF1/NF1’) and the inset terrace tread (NF1/T2), are offset 19–24 and 15–22 m, respectively. The scattered surface ages and variability of 36 Cl concentrations in depth profiles suggest strong evidence for inheritance in alluvial fan and terrace deposits; thus, we used modelled depth-profile ages for both surfaces. The modelled ages 8–10 ka for NF1 and 6–8 ka for T2 yield slip-rate estimates 2.4 +0.5/–0.4 mm/a and 2.8 +0.7/–0.7 mm/a, respectively, for the upper-tread reconstruction of the NF1/NF1’and the lower-tread reconstruction of the NF1/T2. Our results together with previous slip-rate estimates for other structures show a significant internal deformation for Anatolia, especially along its subparallel strike-slip faults. These secondary faults slice Anatolia into several pieces giving rise to the formation of the Malatya-Erzincan, Cappadocian, and Central Anatolian slices, where the geometry is strongly controlled by the distribution of the Tethyan accretionary complexes.

Biryan, Fatih; Pihtili, Güzin
In the available research, firstly a new 3-acetamido phenyl acrylate (APhA) monomer and a novel copolymer containing acetamido phenyl group were synthesized. 3-acetamido phenyl acrylate (APhA) monomer was acquired by the reaction of acryloyl chloride and N-(3-hydroxyphenyl) acetamide. 3-acetamido propyl methacrylate (AAPMA) monomer was prepared in our previous study. A series of copolymers were prepared using these monomers in different mole ratios by free-radical polymerization method at 70 °C The structure of P(AAPMA-co-APhA) copolymer systems was characterized by FT-IR and NMR techniques. Thermal characteristics of P(AAPMA-co-APhA) copolymers were evaluated through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) in an N2 atmosphere. Due to the presence of the amide group, we can say that the polymer with the least weight loss and the highest residue percentage at 500 °C is poly(APhA). AC electrical conductivity and dielectric and electrical parameters were analyzed in a range of 100 Hz–20 kHz frequency. The dielectric constant values of poly(AAPMA-co-APhA0.63) and P(AAPMA-co-APhA0.30) were 4.98 and 4.57 respectively. According to the results, the dielectric value decreased as the APhA units increased.

Can, Umit; Alatas, Bilal
In the 19th and 20th centuries, social networks have been an important topic in a wide range of fields from sociology to education. However, with the advances in computer technology in the 21st century, significant changes have been observed in social networks, and conventional networks have evolved into online social networks. The size of these networks, along with the large amount of data they generate, has introduced new social networking problems and solutions. Social network analysis methods are used to understand social network data. Today, several methods are implemented to solve various social network analysis problems, albeit with limited success in certain problems. Thus, the researchers develop new methods or recommend solutions to improve the performance of the existing methods. In the present paper, a novel optimization method that aimed to classify social network analysis problems was proposed. The problem of stance detection, an online social network analysis problem, was first tackled as an optimization problem. Furthermore, a new hybrid metaheuristic optimization algorithm was proposed for the first time in the current study, and the algorithm was compared with various methods. The analysis of the findings obtained with accuracy, precision, recall, and F-measure classification metrics demonstrated that our method performed better than other methods.

Evans, I.S.; Çılğın, Z.; Bayrakdar, C.; Canpolat, E.
The Taurus Mountains of southwest Turkey are split into numerous separated ranges, of which eleven supported former glaciers. We describe cirques and related moraines in four new locations, as well as those in seven ranges where glaciation was previously known. This gives a complete inventory of the 85 cirques in southwest Turkey. These are comparable in size to those elsewhere, but narrower and often less developed. Lengths averaging 672 m are high relative to widths of 542 m. Overall axial gradients average 22.4°. Cirque floor altitudes are controlled largely by altitudes of the mountains above, but they also vary in relation to precipitation, in sympathy with ELAs (Equilibrium Line Altitudes) of former glaciers. In most ranges where glaciers were short (extending little beyond cirques), ELA can be predicted from mean mid-floor altitude. Our observations demonstrate lower ELAs than in previous literature. Both ELAs and cirque floors rise eastward in the west, and northward inland from the coast. This supports the importance of winds from the west and southwest, off the Mediterranean Sea, bringing LGM (Last Glacial Maximum) conditions wetter than present to mountains near the coast. Cirques face on average a little east of north, showing the effects of shade and differential solar radiation receipt.

This study is related to the production of special geopolymer specimens, where high effectiveness is provided in terms of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and corrosion resistance. The study is important for the preparation of silica fume/slag based geopolymers by using waste steel and iron powder as a partial substitute for slag aggregate and thus to provide an effective solution to the disposal problems of waste metals. The electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (SE) of geopolymer tiles of 7.6 ± 0.1 mm thickness with different metal contents was measured at 4.9–7.05 GHz. Corrosion activity was monitored by measuring the half-cell potential of copper/copper sulphate (Cu/CuSO4) on specimens kept under controlled laboratory conditions for a period of 90 days at %60 relative humidity according to ASTM C876. In addition, anextensive evaluation of the optimization research on the design and proportion of mortar mixtures is presented here. EMI shielding effectiveness of slag based geopolymer tile with 10% steel particles has been determined as 26.1 dB in the frequency range 4.9–7.05 GHz. The results show that the shielding effectiveness reached a maximum of 23.1 decibels (dB) for geopolymer tiles in 40% iron powder content. Also, from experimental results, it was learned that geopolymer specimens with high slag content as binders in the mixtures showed better corrosion resistance.
