The relationship between empathy levels of obstetrics and gynecology specialists and their attitudes toward posthumous organ donation

ÖZBEY, Gürkan; YEŞİLTEPE, Akgün; Dokuzcan, Deniz Aslı

Empathy is recognized as a critical factor in shaping attitudes toward organ donation among healthcare professionals. Given the continuous patient interaction and decision-making roles of obstetrics and gynecology specialists, the limited number of studies examining the link between empathy levels and attitudes toward postmortem organ donation represents a significant gap in literature. This study aims to investigate the relationship between empathy levels and attitudes toward postmortem organ donation among obstetrics and gynecology specialists. This correlational cross-sectional study included 142 obstetrics and gynecology specialists. Data were collected via Google Forms using a personal information form, the Toronto Empathy Questionnaire, and the Attitude toward Posthumous Organ Donation for Transplantation Scale. Analyses were conducted using SPSS 26 and JASP 0.19, including the Spearman’s correlation, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis, and Machine Learning-Random Forest regression analysis methods. 93% of the participants stated that their empathy levels influenced organ donation decisions, and 74.6% reported considering organ donation. Their mean TEQ score was 56.25 ± 7.51, while their mean APODS score was 4.37 ± 0.57. A statistically significant moderate positive correlation was found between empathy and general attitudes toward postmortem organ donation (r = 0.428, p < 0.05). Statistically significant, weak-to-moderate positive correlations were also found between empathy levels and the APODS Positive Attitudes dimension (r = 0.373 p < 0.01), Religion dimension (r = 0.266, p < 0.01), and Family Approval dimension (r = 0.352, p < 0.01) scores of the participants. Significant differences were observed in empathy scores based on gender, empathy levels, and organ donation consideration status (p < 0.05). Attitudes toward posthumous organ donation also varied significantly by empathy levels, donation consideration status, ethical/humanitarian perception of donation, and religious influence (p < 0.05). In the exploratory Random Forest model, attitudes toward organ donation had the highest relative contribution to model performance. Obstetrics and gynecology specialists exhibit moderate empathy levels and highly positive attitudes toward posthumous organ donation. Higher empathy scores were associated with more favorable attitudes toward organ donation among obstetrics and gynecology physicians. Interventions addressing empathy and donation awareness may be valuable, but their effects on attitudes and donation-related behavior should be tested in longitudinal and interventional studies.

Comparative effects of topical Maresin-1 and cyclosporine A in a capsaicin-induced rat model of neurotrophic keratopathy

Canan Sezis, Selen; Güngör Kobat, Sabiha; Kuloğlu, Tuncay; İlhan, Nevin; Erten, Füsun

Purpose: To evaluate and compare the effects of topical Maresin-1 (MaR1) and cyclosporine A (CsA) in a capsaicin-induced rat model of neurotrophic keratopathy (NK). Methods: A total of 40 Sprague-Dawley rats were allocated to five groups (n = 8 per group): Control, NK, NK + Vehicle, NK + CsA (0.05%), and NK + MaR1. Except for the Control group, all animals received a single subcutaneous injection of capsaicin (50 mg/kg) on postnatal day 2. Topical treatments were applied twice daily for 14 days. Corneal TrkA, TNF-α, and Caspase-3 expression were assessed by immunohistochemistry and Western blot. Results: Both treatment groups significantly restored TrkA expression and reduced TNF-α and Caspase-3 relative to NK + Vehicle (p < 0.05 for all). CsA produced greater suppression of TNF-α than MaR1 (p < 0.001), whereas MaR1 demonstrated greater reduction in Caspase-3 than CsA (p = 0.013), with no significant difference between groups for TrkA (p = 0.054). Conclusion: Both MaR1 and CsA significantly attenuated the neurotrophic, inflammatory, and apoptotic changes associated with experimental NK. The distinct efficacy profiles of the two agents suggest complementary mechanisms of action and warrant further investigation of MaR1 in neurotrophic keratopathy.

Knowledge Rent, Intangible Capital, and Core–Periphery Dynamics: Theory and Evidence

    Ateş-Saygılı, Çiğdem

We study how ownership and pricing of intangible assets generate asymmetric macroeconomic dynamics between a core and a periphery. We develop a two-country dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model in which production uses tangible capital, domestically owned intangible capital, and rented foreign intangible services; the periphery pays a knowledge rent flow to the core, which acts as a wedge in its accumulation equation. Calibrated to observed income shares and depreciation patterns, the model yields sharp qualitative predictions. Following a positive technology shock in the core, core output jumps and consumption and labor rise persistently, while the periphery sees only modest output gains and slower capital build-up; a positive technology shock in the periphery can even reduce its output as rent payments drain resources, with only small, transitory effects in the core. A tighter repayment schedule modestly lifts core activity–mainly via consumption–while acting as a negative wealth shock in the periphery that lowers output, labor, and consumption. Sensitivity analyses–varying the periphery's intangible share and reliance on rented knowledge–preserve these qualitative rankings. Complementary evidence from OECD panels (2000–2019) using PVARs and state-dependent local projections shows that cross-border payments for the use of intellectual property co-move with financing conditions and macroeconomic dynamics, consistent with the model's mechanism. Policy implications include building domestic intangible capacity, easing diffusion at fair terms, and leveraging multilateral tools to reduce effective rent exposure in the periphery.

Sustainable land management under uncertainty: A hybrid Bayesian BWM and RPM framework for spatial prioritization

    Konurhan, Zekeriya

Sustainable land management is a complex problem due to environmental constraints and decision-maker uncertainty. This study presents an integrated solution combining Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the Bayesian Best-Worst Method (Bayesian BWM), and the Ratio Product Model (RPM) to improve the accuracy of spatial prioritization in land-use decisions. The integration of the Bayesian BWM and RPM statistically minimizes the cognitive uncertainty in expert opinions whilst enabling the most suitable areas to be ranked with precision within their own categories, without any normalization constraints. The proposed model was developed for three main categories —residential, industrial, and agricultural— in the province of Balıkesir. The analysis results revealed that the ‘ease of access to services’ (0.5660) criterion was the most decisive factor for residential suitability, whilst ‘distance to power transmission lines’ (0.1322) and ‘average rainfall’ (0.1315) were the most decisive factors for industry and agriculture, respectively. The suitability maps show that the Bandırma-Susurluk corridor is strategically prioritized for industry, whilst the Manyas-Gönen basin is prioritized for agricultural production. RPM scores (0.2750 for settlement, 0.6036 for industry, and 0.3868 for agriculture) quantify implementation priorities, providing a reliable decision-support tool for managing uncertainty in spatial planning.

Thermophysical properties and Optimization of modified palm Oil-Amine reinforced biocomposites for lightweight and insulating applications

Şahal, Hakan; Aydoğmuş, Ercan; Arslanoğlu, Hasan

The aim of this study is to investigate various thermophysical properties of modified palm oil-amine (MPOA) reinforced biocomposites to optimize these materials to meet the requirements of lightness and insulation. The effects of MPOA addition to biocomposites on bulk density, surface hardness, thermal conductivity coefficient, and activation energy have been evaluated. In addition, the structural and physical properties of these biocomposites are aimed to determine their potential use as lightweight and thermal insulation materials. The results show that MPOA incorporation significantly affects the bulk density, Shore A hardness, thermal conductivity, and thermal stability of biocomposites. The addition of MPOA provides significant benefits for lightweight biomaterials by reducing bulk density. However, high MPOA content decreases the surface hardness of the biocomposite, and with zirconium silicate (ZrSiO4), this drawback is eliminated and the curing time is reduced. Increasing MPOA ratios also improve the insulation properties of biocomposites by reducing the thermal conductivity coefficient. Thermal decomposition experiment results show that higher MPOA content reduces thermal stability. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals that high levels of MPOA lead to increased surface porosity and irregularities, negatively affecting surface morphology. An optimal MPOA reinforcement level of 5 wt% provides a balance between desirable properties such as reduced density and improved thermal insulation while minimizing adverse morphological effects. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirms the presence of epoxy resin and the successful chemical modification of palm oil to create bioepoxy feedstock. MPOA reinforcement offers benefits such as reduced bulk density and improved thermal insulation while addressing challenges in surface morphology, mechanical properties, and thermal stability. The study concludes that biocomposites with 5 wt% MPOA provide optimum stability, making them suitable for applications requiring lightweight and thermally insulating materials without significantly compromising structural integrity. This research, the long-term performance of biocomposites, and future investigations into their potential applications will further expand their practical applicability.

High-Entropy Alloys and Oxides as Supercapacitor Electrodes: A Structural and Electrochemical Perspective for Energy Storage

Başgöz, Öyküm; Güngör, Ahmet; Güler, Ömer; Erdem, Emre

This study investigates the performance of high entropy alloys [Fe3Cr3Mn2NiV, HEA)] and high entropy oxides [(Fe3Cr3Mn2NiV)O4, HEO)] as electrode materials for supercapacitors. HEA is synthesized through mechanical alloying, followed by HEO forming via an oxidation process. XRD results demonstrate HEA comprises both amorphous and crystalline phases, whereas HEO has an entirely crystalline structure. SEM analyses showed HEA exhibits larger and irregular particles, whereas HEO displays a smaller and spherical morphology. EPR analyses revealed significant changes in defect structures and unpaired electron configurations during the transition from HEA to HEO. HEA is prone to diffusion-controlled processes due to their regular structure and strong magnetic interactions; however, HEO exhibits capacitive behavior based on surface redox reactions and pseudo-capacitive mechanisms due to their irregular structure and oxygen vacancies. CV analyses revealed that HEO contributes more capacitive via surface redox reactions, while GCPL results suggested that HEO demonstrated superior energy density (40.8 Wh kg−1) and power density (14.3 kW kg−1). Impedance analyses revealed that HEO exhibited reduced internal resistance and enhanced ion conductivity, whereas HEA demonstrated higher resistance and diffusion-controlled processes. In conclusion, HEA and HEO exhibit distinct energy storage mechanisms, and these materials can be optimized for supercapacitor applications.

Rainfall trends in the transboundary Euphrates-Tigris River Basin

Acar, Ramazan; Akbas, Ergun; Koycegiz, Cihangir; Esit, Musa

Climate change and anthropogenic factors have a significant impact on rainfall variability. In this study, the trends of monthly total precipitation in the transboundary Euphrates-Tigris River Basin (ETRB), where these effects are intensely observed, were analyzed by trend analysis methods with various perspectives. After decomposing the monthly total rainfall series (1964–2021) obtained from 18 stations representing 12 months of the year, statistical (Mann-Kendall, Wilcoxon, Onyutha), graphical (Innovative Polygon Trend Analysis, IPTA), Trend Polygon Star Concept, TPSC), sub-trend (Onyutha) and spatial trend analyses were performed. Based on the results, it was observed that rainfall in the basin has significant spatial and temporal variability. A monotonic strong decreasing trend was observed in cold months with high rainfall, while an increasing trend was observed in warm months with low rainfall. Extreme rainfall during the winter months has shifted towards the end of the cold months. Graphical and statistical analysis methods have shown strong consistency in identifying monotonic trends. However, the implementation of various methods provides specific insight (transition, sub-trend, etc.) into the temporal and spatial variability of rainfall. Sub-trend analysis shows that rainfall characteristics in the cold months show a significant change before and after the 1990–2000 period. In warmer months, this variability is significantly affected by local and global driving forces. The central and marginal parts of the ETRB have different rainfall characteristics. During cold months, the monotonic trend (decreasing) is significant in the central part. In warm months, the monotonic trend (increasing) increases its intensity in the eastern parts.

Rényi holographic dark energy-inspired model and scalar field reconstruction in bianchi type III spacetime

    Korunur, Murat; Korunur, Sibel

In this study, we consider a cosmological model based on Rényi holographic dark energy within the context of an anisotropic Bianchi type III spacetime geometry. The dark energy density is taken as a modified function of the Hubble parameter, which enables us to express the Einstein field equations in a closed dynamical system. By solving these equations, we obtain the evolution of the Hubble parameter and examine the main cosmological implications of the model. The physical behavior of the universe is discussed through the analysis of the equation-of-state parameter as well as the deceleration parameter. Our results indicate that the universe evolves from an initial decelerated expansion phase toward a late-time accelerated regime. In the asymptotic limit, the model tends to a de Sitter phase, suggesting the presence of a stable attractor configuration. In addition, we reconstruct the dark energy component in terms of different scalar field frameworks, namely quintessence, tachyon, and k-essence models. The associated scalar fields and their potentials are derived and numerically investigated. The obtained results show a coherent late-time behavior, which is in agreement with the observed accelerated expansion of the universe. The small value of the mean anisotropy parameter indicates that this evolution occurs within a quasi-isotropic Bianchi type III background.

ALMisned, Ghada; Yayla, Nihal; Albayrak, M. Gökhan; Güler, Ömer; Sen Baykal, Duygu; Alkarrani, Hessa; Susoy, Gulfem; Tekin, H.O.

Oxide dispersion-strengthened alloys have emerged as a highly effective solution to address the physical, structural, and shielding challenges faced by traditional alloys in nuclear environments. This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of the microstructural, mechanical, and radiation shielding properties of Yb2O3 oxide dispersion-strengthened 316L stainless steel composites at varying Yb2O3 concentrations such as 1%, 5%, 10%, and 20% by weight. XRD analysis revealed lattice distortions, with crystallite sizes decreasing from 11.2267 nm to 9.3351 nm. SEM/EDX analyses confirmed homogeneous Yb2O3 dispersion at lower concentrations, with agglomeration at 20% Yb2O3. The mass attenuation coefficient increased from 56.103 cm2/g to 65.919 cm2/g at 0.015 MeV, marking a 17.5% enhancement. HVL decreased by 40.68% at 0.2 MeV for the 20% Yb2O3 sample. Additionally, the 20% Yb2O3 composite showed nearly 33% lower transmission factor at 3.0 cm thickness and 0.662 MeV. It can be concluded that Yb2O3 reinforcement significantly enhances the microstructural, and gamma-ray attenuation properties of 316L-SS composites, positioning them as promising materials for advanced nuclear shielding and structural applications.

New Record of Peregriana labiata (Rossmässler, 1835) (Gastropoda: Lymnaeidae) in Kelkit Basin (NE Anatolia): Effect of Altitudes on Distribution and Morphological Characters

Kocabaş, Filiz Kutluyer; Kocabaş, Mehmet; Kara, Cemil; Bozali, Nuri; Gürlek, Mustafa Emre

Abstract: Peregriana labiata (Rossmässler, 1835) is a broadly distributed Palaearctic freshwater snail belonging to the family Lymnaeidae and it is an intermediate host of Fascioloides manga causing Fasciolosis as a snail-borne trematode disease. The disease negatively influences the livestock sector and human health with increasing prevalence in the last decades. As a helpful tool, geographical distribution of P. labiata was assessed in Kelkit Basin (North-East Anatolia) as a risk area for fasciolosis transmission. 85 sampling sites were sampled from different habitats in Kelkit Basin (NE Anatolia). The first evidence of P. labiata occurrence was revealed in the basin. In addition, the effects of altitudes on abundance, distribution and shell characters of P. labiata were investigated in several ecosystems. The highest values for SL (standard length) and W (weight) were recorded as 11.80 ± 0.10 mm and 0.17 ± 0.14 g at an altitude of 1233 m, respectively. The highest occurrence of P. labiata was observed at altitudes of 728 m (17%) and 1223 m (16%). PCA analysis showed a strong correlation between SpH (spire height) and AW (aperture width). Overall, the broad range of samples gathered from different altitudes strengthened the idea that the shell characteristics vary with altitude.

Spring-Based Soil–Structure Interaction Modeling of Pile–Abutment Joints in Short-Span Integral Abutment Bridges with LR and RSM

    Polat, Erkan; Göçmen Polat, Elifcan

Integral abutment bridges (IABs) are increasingly adopted in transportation infrastructure due to their durability, reduced maintenance needs, and cost-effectiveness compared to conventional bridges. However, their reliable performance under live loads is strongly influenced by the nonlinear soil–structure interaction (SSI) at the pile–abutment joint, which remains challenging to quantify using conventional analysis methods. This study develops simplified spring-based models to capture the SSI behavior of pile–abutment joints in short-span IABs. Predictive equations for joint rotation, deflection, moment, and shear are formulated using Linear Regression (LR) and Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Unlike prior studies relying solely on FEM or traditional p–y curves, the novelty of this work lies in deriving regression-based spring constants calibrated against FEM analyses, which can be directly implemented in standard structural software. This approach significantly reduces computational demands while maintaining predictive accuracy, enabling efficient assessment of pile contributions and global bridge response. Validation against finite element method (FEM) results confirms the reliability of the simplified models, with RSM outperforming LR in representing nonlinear parameter interactions.

Sustainable epoxy based biocomposites reinforced with Melilotus officinalis: Structural, mechanical, thermal, and dielectric performance evaluation

Solmaz, Adnan; Açar, Mikail; Demirel, Maruf Hurşit; Deniz, Şermin; Aydoğmuş, Ercan

The aim of this study is to investigate the manufacturability of Melilotus officinalis (L.) reinforced epoxy biocomposites as a renewable biofiller and to characterize the mechanical, thermal, and dielectric properties of these materials. For this purpose, composites containing biomass at 0, 3, 6, and 9 wt.% were prepared; the samples were examined by tensile testing, FTIR, SEM, EDX, XRD, Shore D hardness, thermal conductivity, and dielectric analysis. The findings showed that with increasing M. officinalis content, tensile strength, hardness, and density decreased, while ductility and elongation at break improved. The significant decrease in thermal conductivity revealed an increase in heat insulation efficiency. Dielectric analyses showed that strong interfacial polarization occurred at low frequencies, and the dielectric constant and loss values decreased as the frequency increased. SEM examinations confirmed that the plant-derived filler was homogeneously distributed and formed acceptable interfacial adhesion with the matrix. In conclusion, although the use of synthetic epoxy matrix and the decrease in mechanical strength limit load-bearing structural applications, M. officinalis is a promising biofiller for lightweight and partially bio-based epoxy composites thanks to its increased ductility and improved thermal insulation properties. © The Author(s) 2026. Background/Objectives: Dental caries is one of the most common oral diseases worldwide, and early diagnosis is essential for effective treatment. However, detecting carious lesions in panoramic radiographs is challenging because of low image contrast, anatomical complexity, and overlapping structures. This study aimed to develop an improved object detection framework for dental caries localization in panoramic radiographs. Methods: A modified YOLOv8 architecture was developed by integrating ConvNeXtV2 blocks into the Cross-Stage Partial (C2f) modules to enhance feature extraction and gradient propagation. To improve detection performance and reduce overfitting, key training hyperparameters were optimized using a genetic algorithm. The proposed model was evaluated on a dataset of 474 panoramic dental radiographs annotated by experts using bounding boxes. Results: The optimized model achieved a box precision of 78.4%, a recall of 53.6%, and a mean average precision at 50% intersection-over-union threshold (AP50) of 62.6%. Compared with the baseline YOLOv8 model, the proposed approach improved precision and AP50. Visual and quantitative analyses demonstrated that the ConvNeXtV2-enhanced architecture enabled more accurate localization of carious regions. Conclusions: The results indicate that combining ConvNeXtV2-based architectural enhancement with genetic algorithm-based hyperparameter optimization is an effective strategy for dental caries localization in panoramic radiographs. Although recall remains a limitation, the proposed framework shows potential as a computer-aided diagnostic tool for supporting clinical caries assessment.

Effect of Dietary Supplementation with Omega-3 Fatty Acids on Seminal Plasma Arginase Activity and Semen Quality Parameters in Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum, 1792)

Kaya, Seyma Ozer; Ozcan, Sinan; Kaya, Emre; Gur, Seyfettin; Koprucu, Kenan; Sonmez, Mustafa; Turk, Gaffari; Erisir, Mine

Background: This study was conducted to determine the effect of various fatty acid ratios added to diets of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum) on some sperm parameters and parameters related to arginase activity. Methods: A total of 99 male rainbow trout were used in this study, with the fish averaging 3 years old. Semen was collected by abdominal massage. Four different experimental groups were created in the study: a control group without n-3 series fatty acids added to their diets, and groups with n-3 series fatty acids added at ratios of 1% (D1), 2% (D2), and 3% (D3), respectively. Results: While no significant difference in semen volume was observed between the D1 and D3 groups and the control group, semen volume was significantly higher in the D2 group. Compared with the control group, the time required for sperm motility to decline to both 50% and 0% was significantly prolonged in the D1 and D3 groups. Seminal plasma arginase activity did not differ significantly in the D2 and D3 groups compared with the control group but was significantly higher in the D1 group. Conclusions: Consequently, considering the doses used in the study, fatty acid supplementation was found to lead to changes in sperm quality parameters, specifically volume (only 2%) and arginase activity (only 1%). Given that the rate of decrease in sperm motility was later in groups D1 and D2, it was concluded that the added fatty acids may be beneficial.

Effects of fenugreek and shatavari on vasomotor and hormonal balance in ovariectomized rats

Erten, Füsun; Er, Beşir; Orhan, Cemal; Morde, Abhijeet A.; Padigaru, Muralidhara; Şahin, Kazim

Trigonella foenum-graecum L. (fenugreek, TFG) and Asparagus racemosus Willd. (shatavari, AR) have been extensively used in Ayurvedic, Unani, and traditional folk medicine to support women’s health. TFG seeds are traditionally employed as galactagogues and hormonal modulators, while AR roots are valued as rejuvenating tonics with phytoestrogenic activity, prescribed for menopausal complaints and reproductive well-being. Both plants also exhibit antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects, suggesting their potential as safe, nonhormonal alternatives to conventional hormone replacement therapy. This study investigated the dose-dependent effects of TFG and AR, administered individually or in combination, on vasomotor symptoms, hormonal balance, oxidative stress, and neuroendocrine markers in an ovariectomized (OVX) rat model of menopause. Adult female rats underwent bilateral ovariectomy and were randomized into eight groups: Control, OVX, OVX+TFG (30 and 60 mg/kg), OVX+AR (30 and 60 mg/kg), and OVX+TFG/AR combinations. Treatments were administered orally for 8 days. Tail, core, and skin temperatures were recorded to assess thermoregulation, while blood and tissue samples were analyzed for hormone levels, oxidative stress, and molecular markers. OVX rats showed classical menopausal alterations, including increased follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, cortisol, and malondialdehyde, and decreased 17β-estradiol, progesterone, dopamine, and antioxidant enzymes, along with dysregulated neuroendocrine markers. All treatments partially reversed these changes, while the high-dose combination (TFG/AR 60 mg/kg each) demonstrated the most pronounced effects, normalizing hormone levels, reducing hot-flash-like temperature fluctuations, restoring antioxidant activity, downregulating neuroendocrine markers (c-FOS, GnRH, Kisspeptin, NKB, and TRPV1) expression, and elevating brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels (p < 0.05). High-dose combined supplementation of TFG and AR effectively alleviates vasomotor disturbances, restores hormonal and oxidative balance, and modulates neuroendocrine pathways in OVX rats. These findings validate their traditional use and highlight their potential as safe phytoestrogen-based, nonhormonal alternatives for the management of menopausal symptoms, warranting further clinical evaluation.

This study was conducted to determine the effect of neuro-linguistic programming on mothers’ comfort levels following cesarean section in the postpartum period. Methods: This study was performed from 1 January to 1 September 2023 as a prospective randomized controlled single-blind clinical trial with 100 participants (50 experimental, 50 control). The research data were collected using the Personal Information Form and the Postpartum Comfort Scale. The dependent samples t test and independent samples t test were used in the analysis of research data as well as numbers, percentages, and means. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to evaluate the effect of the NLP more accurately by controlling the pre-test scores. Results: There were statistically significant differences between the mean pretest and posttest postpartum comfort scale scores, physical comfort scores, psycho-spiritual comfort scores, and sociocultural comfort scores of mothers in the intervention group. In this regard, mothers in the intervention group had higher mean postpartum comfort scale scores, physical comfort scores, psycho-spiritual comfort scores, and sociocultural comfort scores in the posttest phase than in the pretest phase. Conclusions: This study revealed that neuro-linguistic programming enhanced the postpartum comfort levels of mothers who underwent cesarean delivery. In this context, it is recommended that nurses and midwives enhance participants’ comfort through the use of neuro-linguistic programming techniques in care processes. Trial registration: NCT05646537.

Male sexual dysfunction is increasingly prevalent, driving interest in marine algal bioactives as potential natural modulators of reproductive physiology. Brown seaweeds such as Fucus vesiculosus and Laminaria digitata contain phlorotannins, fucoidans, and antioxidant compounds of applied relevance in phycology and biotechnology. This study assessed the effects of standardized water extracts of these two species on reproductive behavior, hormonal status, sperm quality, oxidative balance, and nitric oxide (NO)/cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) signaling in male Sprague–Dawley rats. Animals received the seaweed extracts orally by gavage (300 mg kg⁻1 day⁻1) for 52 days. Both extracts improved male reproductive behavior by reducing the time required to initiate mounting, intromission, and ejaculation (mount latency, intromission latency, and ejaculation latency), while increasing the number of these sexual behaviors during the test period (p < 0.05). Serum follicle-stimulating hormone and testosterone concentrations increased, alongside higher testicular superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase activities and lower malondialdehyde levels. Sperm count and motility improved, particularly with L. digitata extract. Western blot analyses revealed phosphorylated phosphodiesterase-5, endothelial NO synthase, and cGMP levels, with reduced endothelin-1 in testicular and epididymal tissues (p < 0.05–0.001). These findings indicate that extracts of F. vesiculosus and L. digitata, chosen for their well-documented antioxidant and phlorotannin-rich profiles, confer protective and prosexual effects associated with enhanced antioxidant defense and upregulation of NO/cGMP-related pathways, with the L. digitata extract exhibiting comparatively stronger activity.

Exploring the Grazing Land Footprint’s Stochastic Behavior in the Top Dairy and Meat-Producing Nations

Adali, Zafer; Yeter, Fatih; Çoban, Mustafa Necati; Sarı, Sacit

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of influential and easily understood sustainability principles. SDG2 defines Zero Hunger, which is once again a key goal in the SDGs. A sustainable food system depends on the grazing land footprint, one of the elements of the ecological footprint. For food security to be maintained, the grazing land footprint has to be taken into consideration. In order to provide adequate global food systems and mitigate climate change, research on the stochastic features of grazing land footprint is crucial. The goal of this research is to look at the stochastic characteristics of the grazing land footprint in 13 nations that produce almost two-thirds of the world’s milk and meat. The study includes data for 13 nations over the years 1961–2022. Several unit root tests are conducted to provide more precise data about the effectiveness of the policy shocks, including whether or not they allow for repeated, smooth structural breakdowns. The results show that because the series is prone to following its long-term trends, shocks cannot lead it to diverge from those trends. Thus, any shocks brought on by policies cannot have a lasting effect on the series. However, the series includes a unit root. The unit root tests have made it clear that any policy shocks would have a long-lasting effect on the series and that policymakers may set a goal for the series. Policy suggestions have been provided for the investigated nations in conjunction with these results.
