Aksu, Onder; Gulec, Azime Kucukgul; Demir, Veysel; Danabas, Durali; Yildirim, Numan; Ozcelik, Mehtap; Can, Erkan; Kocabas, Mehmet

This study is aimed to determine the bioaccumulation of copper and zinc in hemolymph of freshwater crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) fed with zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) collected from Keban Dam Lake. This is the first study on bioaccumulation of Cu and Zn in hemolymph of males and females of A. leptodactylus. The average concentrations of Cu and Zn in the hemolymph samples were found out as 0.54 and 35.07 ppm respectively for male and 0.42 and 15.59 ppm respectively for female control freshwater crayfish. The levels of Zn in the hemolymph of both male and female ones among control and diet groups were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The Cu levels among control and diet groups in female ones were statistically significant (P < 0.05) but not in the male ones (P > 0.05). The results of current study revealed that feed treatment with boiling was not effective at the levels of metal bioaccumulation in hemolymph. It was observed that this metal bioaccumulation is more related with sex differences.

THE EFFECTS HYDROXYUREA DERIVATIVE SCHIFF BASES ON FATTY ACIDS AND LYPOPHILIC VITAMINS IN LIVER OF RATS

Turkoglu, Semra; Parlak, Akif E.; Yildirim, Isil; Karagozoglu, Yusuf; Alayunt, Naci O.

Schiff bases and their metal complexes have antiviral, antimicrobial, antitumoral, radical scavenging and antioxidant activities. In this study, effects of Schiff base ligand and its metal complexes on the fatty acids and lyphophlilic vitamins of the liver of rats were investigated. The fatty acids of the liver were determined by GC and lyphophlilic vitamins of the liver determined by HPLC. The amounts of stearic acid (18:0), oleic acid (18:1) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) considerably decreased in the Mn, Ni and Zn complexes groups, whereas the amount of linolenic acid (18:3) and eicosatrienoic acid (20:3) considerably increased in the Ni an Zn complexes groups compared to the control group (P<0.01). However, there was no significant difference (P>0.05) in the amounts of arachidonic acid (20:4), docosahexaenoic acid (22:6), total saturated fatty acids (SFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), total omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids between groups. The amounts of vitamin K-1, vitamin D-2 considerably increased (P<0.05) in the Mn and Ni complexes groups as compared to the control. It was observed that the amount of a-tocopherol increased both in the Ni and Co complexes groups when compared to the control group but this increase was parallel to the amount in the same groups (P<0.05). As a result, it can be think that with the application of toxic metals such as manganese, cupper, nickel, cobalt, and zinc unsaturated fatty acids affected the activities of enzymes which are in the liver tissue and in charge in the fatty acid chain elongation.

    Erguven, G. O.; Bayhan, H.; Ikizoglu, B.; Kanat, G.; Nuhoglu, Y.

Bioremediation is the use of microorganisms to degrade environmental contaminants (pesticides, polyaromatic hydrocarbons etc.) into less toxic forms or compounds. In this study microbial biodegradation of trifluralin was performed in liquid media with 11 different types of identified fungi and bacteria cultures and their mixtures in agiated culture media. The isolated fungi and bacteria mixtures showed the highest degradation, reaching 93% in the chemical oxygen demand (COD) parameter in four days and 82% as trifluralin active ingredient in five days. Bacteria and fungi mixtures achieved 69% and 66% degradations of trifluralin active ingredient respectively. In the fungi studies, the best removal was achieved by M. Chlamydosporia at 80%, in the bacteria studies, the best removal was achieved by Bacillus simplex about 95% in five days. These different removal rates were due to the microbial differencies.

Volatility Spillover, Hedging and Portfolio Diversification Between Oil Market and S&P Sectoral Indices

Gençyürek, Ahmet Galip; Ekinci, Ramazan; Agan, Busra

The study aims to analyze the volatility spillover between the oil market (WTI) and the S&P (Stand and Poor's) Energy, Financial, and Industry sector indices through conditional correlation and variance causality. The DCC-GARCH (Dynamic Conditional Correlation-Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity) and Hafner-Herwartz (2006) Variance Causality models were used to analyze the daily data for the period between January 3, 2012 and December 31, 2019. The results indicate a positive time-var ying conditional correlation between the oil market and sector indices. In addition, the hedge ratios and risk-minimizing portfolio weights (which are vital for investors) have been calculated based on these data. The cheapest hedging transaction with the oil market occurs in the financial sector, while the most expensive one occurs in the energy sector. It has also been determined that volatility is transmitted from the sector indices to the oil market. This situation means that the S&P sector indices play a leading role (resource of information-emit information) in volatility spillover. The results provide important information to researchers, investors, and policymakers.

The in vitro effect of Lambda-cyhalothrin on quality and antioxidant responses of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss spermatozoa

Kutluyer, Filiz; Erisir, Mine; Benzer, Fulya; Ögretmen, Fatih; Inanan, Burak Evren

There is little information in the scientific literature about effect of in vitro exposure of fish spermatozoa to pesticides. In vitro effect of Lambda-cyhalothrin (La) on sperm quality and oxidative stress has not been fully explored yet. The effects of LCT, which is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide, on quality and oxidative stress of spermatozoa were investigated in vitro due to extensively use to control a wide range of insect pests in agriculture, public health, and homes and gardens. To explore the potential in vitro toxicity of La, fish spermatozoa were incubated with different concentrations of LCT (0.6, 1.2 and 2.4 mu g/L) for 2 h. Reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in spermatozoa were analyzed for determination of oxidant and antioxidant balance. Our results indicated that the percentage and duration of sperm motility significantly decreased with exposure to LCT. Activity of GSH-Px and MDA (P < 0.05) and GSH levels (P < 0.05) increased in a concentration-dependent manner while CAT activity decreased (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the oxidant and antioxidant status and sperm quality were affected by increasing concentrations of LCT. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Influence of Alpha and Gamma-Iron Oxide Nanoparticles on Marine Microalgae Species

Demir, Veysel; Ates, Mehmet; Arslan, Zikri; Camas, Mustafa; Celik, Fatih; Bogatu, Corneliu; Can, Safak Seyhaneyildiz

The effects of alpha-iron oxide (alpha-Fe2O3) and gamma-iron oxide (gamma-Fe2O3) nanoparticles (NPs) on marine microalgae species (Nannochloropsis sp. and Isochrysis sp.) were investigated in this study. Both Fe2O3 NPs covered the surface of algae with the agglomerates of the nanoparticles. This form of physical NP toxicity significantly decreased the sizes of phytoplankton. Both NPs were toxic to the tested algal species, while alpha-Fe2O3 showed less toxicity than gamma-Fe2O3 NPs for both algal species. A comparative analysis of growth data of the two algal species treated with alpha-Fe2O3 or gamma-Fe2O3 NPs revealed that Isochrysis sp. are more sensitive than Nannochloropsis sp. Toxicity of these widely used NPs to primary producers forming the base of the food chain in aquatic environments might result in widespread adverse effects on aquatic environmental health.

Investigation of the Optical Properties of the Solutions of the Tetraaquabis(saccharinato)metal(II)dihydrate [Metal: Co(II) and NMI)] Complexes at Different Molarity and Volume of Stock Solutions

Adiguzel, Ragip; Gunduz, Bayram; Turan, Nevin; Topcu, Yildiray

We investigated the optical properties and the transmittance characterizations of the stock solutions of the Co (II) and Ni(II) complexes of Saccharin and determined the molar extinction coefficients at different molarity. The molar extinction coefficients (epsilon) values of the Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes in the first region decrease with increasing molarity, and the e values of the Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes at lower wavelength are higher than that of the values at higher wavelength. The absorption band edge values of the Co(II) complex shift from 3.584 to 3.139 eV with the increasing molarity, while the absorption band edge values of the Ni(II) complex shift from 3.574 to 3.493 eV with the increasing molarity. The plots of refractive index of the Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes consist of two anomalous (abnormal) dispersion regions and one normal dispersion region. The direct energy-gap of the Co(II) complex can be more decreased with molarity. The absorbance, molar extinction coefficients, refractive index values of the Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes decrease, while the average transmittance in the visible region, direct optical band-gap values of the Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes increase with increasing volume of DMF solvent or decreasing volume of the solutions of the Coal) and Ni(II) complexes.

Chronic exposure of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) to iron oxide nanoparticles: Effects of particle morphology on accumulation, elimination, hematology and immune responses

Ates, Mehmet; Demir, Veysel; Arslan, Zikri; Kaya, Hasan; Yilmaz, Sevdan; Camas, Mustafa

Effects of chronic exposure to alpha and gamma iron oxide nanoparticles (alpha-Fe2O3 and gamma-Fe2O3 NPs) were investigated through exposure of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) to 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mg/L (9.2 x 10(-4), 4.6 x 10(-3) and 9.2 x 10(-3) mM) aqueous suspensions for 60 days. Fish were then transferred to NP-free freshwater and allowed to eliminate ingested NPs for 30 days. The organs, including gills, liver, kidney, intestine, brain, spleen, and muscle tissue of the fish were analyzed to determine the accumulation, physiological distribution and elimination of the Fe2O3 NPs. Largest accumulation occurred in spleen followed by intestine, kidney, liver, gills, brain and muscle tissue. Fish exposed to gamma-Fe2O3 NPs possessed significantly higher Fe in all organs. Accumulation in spleen was fast and independent of NP concentration reaching to maximum levels by the end of the first sampling period (30th day). Dissolved Fe levels in water were very negligible ranging at 4-6 mu g/L for alpha-Fe2O3 and 17-21 mu g/L for gamma-Fe2O3 NPs (for 1 mg/L suspensions). Despite that, Fe levels in gills and brain reflect more dissolved Fe accumulation from metastable gamma-Fe2O3 polymorph. Ingested NPs cleared from the organs completely within 30-day elimination period, except the liver and spleen. Liver contained about 31% of alpha- and 46% of gamma-Fe2O3, while spleen retained about 62% of alpha- and 35% of the gamma-polymorph. No significant disturbances were observed in hematological parameters, including hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cell and white blood cell counts (p > 0.05). Serum glucose (GLU) levels decreased in treatments exposed to 1.0 mg/L of gamma-Fe2O3 NPs at day 30 (p < 0.05). In contrast, GLU levels increased during the elimination period for 1.0 mg/L alpha-Fe2O3 NPs treatments (p < 0.05). Transient increases occurred in glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). Serum Fe levels did not change during exposure (p > 0.05), but increased significantly within elimination period due to mobilization of ingested NPs from liver and spleen to blood. Though respiratory burst activity was not affected (p > 0.05), lysozyme activity (LA) was suppressed suggesting an immunosuppressive effects from both Fe2O3 NPs (p < 0.05). In contrast, myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels increased significantly in treatments exposed to alpha-Fe2O3 NPs (p < 0.05), and the effect from gamma-polymorph was marginal (p > 0.05). The results indicate that morphological differences of Fe2O3 NPs could induce differential uptake, assimilation and immunotoxic effects on O. niloticus under chronic exposure. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. LEAD, CADMIUM AND COPPER CONCENTRATIONS IN LEAVES OF Nerium oleander L. AND Robinia pseudoacacia L. AS BIOMONITORS OF ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION

Kaya, Gokce; Okumus, Nuh; Yaman, Mehmet

Pb, Cd and Cu concentrations in leaves of Nerium oleander L. and Robinia pseudoacacia L. plants collected from industrial areas in Gaziantep-Turkey were examined for biomonitoring of atmospheric pollution using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The Pb levels in the leaves of Nerium oleander L. and Robinia pseudoacacia L. collected at a distance of 50 m from the battery plant were observed to be 2820 and 1860 mg kg(-1), respectively. The Pb, Cd, and Cu concentrations in the soils studied were in the range of 17-602, 0.142-0.656 and 12-38 mg kg(-1), respectively. Lead concentrations described above for plant leaves were found to be about 2000-fold higher than those in the same plants collected from the control area (1.0 mg Pb kg(-1) for both plant species). Similarly, Cd levels in Robinia pseudoacacia L. collected from polluted area were observed to be about 40 times higher than those from control area. Consequently, it is observed that the leaves of Neriurn oleander L. can be used for biomonitoring of Pb, and Robinia pseudoacacia L. for biomonitoring of both Pb and Cd pollution.

Polat, Ridvan; Cakilcioglu, Ugur; Kaltalioglu, Kaan; Ulusan, Musa Denizhan; Turkmen, Zafer

Ethnopharmacological relevance: This paper provides significant ethnobotanical information on medicinal plants in Espiye in the Black Sea Region. Recording such data calls for urgency. This is the first ethnobotanical study in which statistical calculations about plants are carried out by means of FIC method in Northern (Espiye-Giresun) part of Turkey. This study aims to identify the wild plants collected for medicinal purposes by locals of Espiye which is located in the Black Sea Region of Turkey, and to identify the uses and local names of these wild plants. Materials and methods: A field study had been carried out for a period of approximately 2 years (20122014). During this period, information about medicinal use of 55 wild and 15 cultivated plants were collected. Demographic characteristics of participants, names of the local plants, their utilized parts and preparation methods were investigated and recorded. Through face-to-face interviews, we identified and recorded demographic characteristics of the respondents. We interviewed 128 persons who are over the age of 29. The plant taxa were collected within the scope of the study; and herbarium materials were prepared. In addition, the relative significance value of the taxa was determined, and informant consensus factor (FIC) was calculated for the medicinal plants included in the study. Results: We have found out in the literature review of the plants included in our study that 70 plant taxa are already used for medicinal purposes while 3 plants are not available among the records in the literature. The most common families are Asteraceae, Rosaceae, Lamiaceae, Malvaceae, and Ericaceae. We include in our study and report for the first time the medicinal uses of Alchemilla crinita Buser, Stachys sylvatica L., and Thymus leucotrichus Hal. var. leucotrichus Hal. Names of local plants in Turkey vary especially due to vernaculars. The plants that the locals of Espiye use are called with the same or different local names in various parts of Anatolia. Conclusion: We found out that locals living in the research area use for therapeutic purpose 70 plants taxa which belong to 36 families. Turkish citizens with different ethnic backgrounds took the questionnaire. These people use these wild plants in treatment of several diseases. Comparison of the data obtained in this study with the experimental data obtained in the previous laboratory studies on the wild plants which grow in Espiye proved ethnobotanical usages to a great extent. Literature review indicated that the therapeutic plants that grow in Espiye are used in different parts of the world for the treatment of similar diseases. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Islak, S.; Çelik, E.; Kir, D.; Özorak, C.

In this study, the CuAl-TiC composite materials were produced using hot pressing process. Effect of TiC grain size (0.2, 4 and 20 mu m) on some properties of these materials was investigated experimentally. Production of CuAl-TiC composites was carried out under pressure of 35 MPa, at 700A degrees C, and for a sintering time of 5 minutes. SEM-MAP studies showed that the TiC grains were relatively homogeneously distributed in the CuAl matrix. Microstructure analysis revealed that the composite materials consist of Cu, Al, Cu9Al4, CuAl2 and TiC phases. With the decreasing of TiC grain size, the hardness, transverse rupture strength, relative density and sintered density of composites increased.

Evaluation of microbiological quality of sushi sold in restaurants and supermarkets in turkey

Cadun, Asli; Sen Yilmaz, E. Burcu; Demirtas, Nida; Vongkamjan, Kitiya

Sushi is a popular traditional Japanese food in worldwide. This study was conducted to investigate the physical, chemical, sensory and microbiological quality of sushi sold in supermarket and restaurants. 300 sushi samples were purchased from 5 different popular restaurants (A, B, D, E, and F) and 1 supermarket (C). Four main types of sushi (California roll (CR), sesame roll (SMR), sake roll (SR), take roll (TR)) were chosen from each station. pH values of sushi rice samples were found to be all below 4.6. According to sensory overall quality of sushi samples, CR and SMR from station C had significantly the lowest values (p<0.05). Among the sushi samples, pathogenic bacteria Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus were not detected in 25 g portion of any samples. Counts of total aerobic bacteria were high in stations A, B, D, E, and F (between 4.3-7 log CFU/g), except for station C (3.5 log CFU/g). Results for coliform counts showed similar trends as those of E. coli counts in samples. E. coli counts of all sushi types from all stations (except SMR, SR and TR from station D and SR from station E) exceeded the limit of acceptability (<100 MPN/g). Our finding may suggest a common presence of coliforms and E. coli in raw materials used in sushi preparation.

Arik, Kaan; Agdas, Mehmet T.; Korkmaz, Adem; Kosunalp, Selahattin; Iliev, Teodor

Viral infections, especially those of the poxvirus family, present significant diagnostic challenges due to their similar clinical symptoms. This study proposes an innovative deep learning-based approach to classify six categories of poxvirus-related skin diseases: chickenpox, cowpox, healthy, measles, monkeypox, and smallpox. A dataset of 9,120 augmented images was used to train, validate, and test three advanced deep-learning models-YOLOv8, YOLOv5, and ResNet32. Among the models, YOLOv8 demonstrated superior performance, achieving an accuracy of 99.80%, precision of 99.28%, and recall of 99.14%, significantly outperforming YOLOv5 and ResNet32. The results underscore the potential of YOLOv8 in medical image analysis, providing a robust and efficient tool for the early detection and accurate classification of viral skin diseases. Comparisons with related studies highlight the effectiveness of the proposed approach, making it a state-of-the-art solution for improving diagnostic accuracy in healthcare. Future work will focus on extending the dataset and evaluating the model's applicability in real-time clinical environments.

The in vitro effect of cypermethrin on quality and oxidative stress indices of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss spermatozoa

Kutluyer, Filiz; Benzer, Fulya; Erisir, Mine; Ögretmen, Fatih; Inanan, Burak Evren

There is limited information on the scientific literature about the effect of in vitro exposure of fish sperm to pesticides. In vitro effect of cypermethrin on sperm quality and oxidative stress has not yet been fully investigated. Therefore, the effects of cypermethrin, a type II pyrethroid insecticide, on quality and oxidative stress of spermatozoa were examined in vitro. To explore the potential in vitro toxicity of cypermethrin, fish spermatozoa were incubated with different concentrations of cypermethrin (1.025, 2.05 and 4.1 mu g/l) for 2 h. The motility rate and duration of sperm were determined after exposure to cypermethrin. Reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in spermatozoa were analyzed for determination of oxidant and antioxidant balance. Our results indicated that spermatozoa motility and duration significantly decreased with exposure to cypermethrin. Additionally, activity of GSH-Px (P < 0.05) and MDA and GSH levels increased in a concentration-dependent manner while CAT activity decreased (P < 0.05). Consequently, the oxidant and antioxidant status and sperm quality were affected by quantitative changes and different concentrations of cypermethrin. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Effect of hydroxyapatite/SiO2 hybride coatings on surface morphology and corrosion resistance of REX-734 alloy

Say, Yakup; Aksakal, Bunyamin; Dikici, Burak

REX-734 stainless steel alloy was coated with hydroxyapatite (HA)-silicon dioxide (SiO2) composite (hybride) coatings by using the sol-gel method. Surface morphologies, adhesion resistances and corrosion behaviors of the coatings were examined and the characterization of the coatings was performed by using XRD, SEM, and EDS. It was observed that porous and crack-free surface morphology enhanced adhesion strength of the coatings. Through the shear tests, it was found that the adhesion resistance was 25.14 MPa in HA coatings and 25.47 MPa in HA-SiO2 coatings. Corrosion analyses of the coatings were performed by using potentiodynamic polarization (PDS) tests. It was determined that corrosion dimples formed on the coating surface and the corrosion resistance in HA+SiO2 coatings increased with decreasing porosity; however, in the further steps of corrosion, it reached to the base material by causing a pitting effect on the coated surface. An artificial neural network-based earthquake casualty estimation model for Istanbul city

    Gul, Muhammet; Guneri, Ali Fuat

Earthquakes over the world cause serious damages for people and the economy. The establishment of an appropriate model to estimate potential losses or injuries in earthquake disasters is fundamental to decrease their impacts and losses and effectively respond and mitigate. Turkey as a country that experienced many earthquakes in the last century and had serious human and financial losses needs a comprehensive knowledge of consequences of devastating earthquakes to be able to plan for the future. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have abilities to solve and analyse complex relations as an appropriate method to estimate number of injuries. In this study, an ANN model is built up for the earthquake casualty prediction, which takes earthquake occurrence time, earthquake magnitude, and population density as the predictors and employs 21 Mw > 5 earthquake disasters occurred in Turkey from 1975 as samples for the training of the network. The model was then tested on a study region consisting of four districts in Istanbul which is estimated to have the highest injury rate according to the earlier reports and generated estimations of the expected number of injured people. Results show that 99.9 % of the variability in the number of injured people is predictable with using this ANN model. Comparison of actual values and estimated output values in the ANN model was also found apparently very close to each other. According to the test case study results, when the value of earthquake magnitude is 6.5 Mw, number of injured people has increased in a sharp trend compared to the previous magnitude value (6 Mw) for all districts. Estimated number of injured people in daytime is obtained higher than at night when the earthquake magnitude is 5 and 5.5 Mw. The highest value in estimated number of injured people has emerged in Fatih district as 7241 for a 7.5 Mw daytime earthquake. On conclusion, it was deduced that the model can reveal accurate estimation of casualties and it can provide information in order to develop mitigation policies, especially in earthquake emergency service management.

The probiotics are very important for aquaculture because of their role in enhancing the fish health status, improving disease resistance, growth performance, and body composition, reducing malformations, improving gut morphology and the overall microbial balance. The objective of the presently reported study was to investigate effects of kefir as a probiotic product on the digestive and hepatic enzyme activities, as well as glucose level of Coruh trout, Salmo coruhensis Turan, Kottelat et Engin, 2010. The experiment was performed with four treatments: control group (no kefir), D1, D2, and D3 (kefir-supplemented diet: 10, 20, and 40 g . kg(-1) fish body mass, respectively). The activity of: alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotranferase (AST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), lipase, amylase-as well as the glucose levels were determined after 4 months. The results indicated that glucose levels (P < 0.05) and digestive enzymes (lipase and amylase) in the blood serum decreased in fish fed diets containing kefir (P > 0.05). On the contrary, the activity of liver enzymes (ALT, AST, and LDH) increased insignificantly (P > 0.05). In conclusion, digestive and liver enzyme activities were affected by quantitative changes in dietary kefir insignificantly but further research is needed to establish whether the liver and digestive enzyme physiology of Coruh trout can be affected by kefir-supplemented diets in a long-term trial.
