- BildiriAçık Erişim2018Investigation of Earthquake Behaviour of Construction System and Materials in Traditional Turkish Architecture
Yardimli, Seyhan; Dal, Murat; Mihlayanlar, Esma
In this study, it is aimed to present a point of view regarding the behaviour of construction systems implemented in traditional Turkish architecture against earthquakes. In the scope of the study, examples of civil architecture were considered and their structures were evaluated as building elements such as foundation, wall and flooring. Traditional Turkish architecture construction systems can be evaluated in two parts. One of them is the wooden carcass system and the other is the unreinforced masonry system. In the wooden carcass system, the carrier is the load bearing elements used in horizontal and vertical directions. Intermediate parts (strut, diagonal etc.) are placed between these elements to form triangles. The triangles (strut, diagonal) used in the wooden skeleton system comprise highly resistant forms against earthquakes. Moreover, due to the internal structure and physical properties of the wood, which is the skeleton material, the flexibility that it maintains can meet the lateral loads of earthquakes. The second construction system which is the system addressed in this application, is the unreinforced masonry system. In this system, the loadbearing system itself is the walls, which are not resistant to lateral loads. In order to provide this flexibility beams (hatillar) are installed at certain intervals. After the wall is built to a certain height, a different material is laid allowing a plane of movement on the wall. Thus, when the wall is exposed to a lateral load, it escapes from the planes where the beams (hatillar) are present, and is protected against large damages by absorbing the earthquake load. In order to establish that the foundation of the structure can withstand earthquakes by movement, wood is placed at the lower part of the foundation above a layer of sand ensuring lateral movement and flexibility of the building. In traditional buildings the slabs are connected to the building walls with beams (hatillar). Through the agency of the beams (hatillar) formed at the connection points, the slabs can act as a mass so that they can meet the earthquake load. Allowing the structure to move makes it resistant to earthquakes, seismic isolators are used for this purpose by absorbing the earthquake load and moving the foundation of the structure.

In the present study, tensile bond strength between on acrylic resin and a soft liner, molloplast B, was studied. To enhance the bonding capacity between these materials, acrylic resin surface was modified using ethyl methacrylate, iso-butyl methacrylate or tert-butyl methacrylate monomers. The monomers were applied onto the surfaces of methacrylate components for 60, 120 or 180 s and the bond strength values were obtained. The values were statistically compared. Changes on the modified surfaces were investigated by fourier transform infared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR). The highest bond strength value was obtained from 120 s treatments with ethyl methacrylate and the lowest value was obtained from 60 s treatments with iso-butyl methacrylate. These high alkyl monomers also had secondary interactions on the acrylic surfaces, evidenced by FTIR-ATR.

Dereli, Zeynep; Sevik, Ramazan; Batu, Ali; Gök, Veli
Turkish delight is a sugar-based jellylike confection that has been produced for hundreds of years. In this study, four different modified atmospheres were created in order to extend the shelf life of Turkish delight. Microbiological analyses and sensory evaluations were conducted at the beginning of storage and at 7-day intervals thereafter. Microbiological analyses showed that the numbers of total mesophilic aerobic bacteria within samples stored in a modified atmosphere of 30% CO2 plus 70% N-2 were lower than in the other modified atmospheres. According to sensory evaluations, the samples kept in a modified atmosphere of 50% CO2 plus 50% N-2 were unacceptable after the 21st day of storage, whereas those kept in modified atmospheres of both 25% CO2 plus 75% N-2 and 30% CO2 plus 70% N-2 were found to be acceptable even after 30 days of storage.

- MakaleYalnız künye2016Scopus SJRQ1Cultural perceptions and clinical experiences of nursing students in Eastern Turkey
Karatay, G.; Bowers, B.; Karadag, E. B.; Demir, M. C.
Aim: This study explored Turkish nursing students' perceptions of providing care to patients culturally different from themselves. Background: Increasing migration will increase the need for nurses to provide care across cultural groups. Methods: Twenty one students in the second year of a 4-year nursing programme participated in 3 focus groups. Data were analysed using directed content analysis. Research questions were based on Campinha-Bacote's model. Results: Three themes were identified: perceived cultural barriers, perceived cultural facilitators and identifying culturally sensitive actions. Generally, students were able to define culture but were unable to say how culture would affect nursing practice. Discussion: Students were unprepared to practice in a multicultural setting. Cultural awareness is insufficient for determining how to respond to cultural differences. Limitations: The study is limited by its restriction to a single school of nursing and a single curriculum. Conclusions: The multiple, ongoing political, religious and ethnic conflicts will require nurses to provide care to patients from other cultural groups, in some instances to people identified as adversaries to the group the nurse may represent. Understanding cultural differences is insufficient to do this effectively. Implications for nursing education: Learning culturally competent care requires opportunities to provide, be guided through and reflect on care to individuals from different cultural groups. Implications for organizational and public policies: Standards for culturally competent care should be adopted by all care delivery settings. Public and organizational policies openly declaring healthcare settings as cultural safe zones, and explicit organizational commitment to culturally safe care, would set clear expectations for providers and help ensure a positive patient experience.

In this paper, we studied to obtain numerical solutions of partial differential equations with variable coefficient by Sumudu Transform Method (STM). We applied to three examples this method. Then, we ploted 2D and 3D graphics of these equations by means of programming language Mathematica. In order to solve these differential equations which is ordinary and partial, the integral transforms such as the Laplace, Hankel and Fourier were unusually used and therefore there are several works on literature and applications of them. But it has few been given by using STM. And thus, in recent years STM has been an important places in applied sciences such as especially engineering, physics, physical sciences. Moreover, it is important for solving ordinary and partial differential equations which is linear and nonlinear.

Çimen, Okay; Koç, Sukru; Sari, Ali
The study area is located in the south of Daghacilar village of Goynuk town in Bolu Province, Turkey. This study is a pioneering work in Turkey on the genesis and environmental characteristics of oil shales and other shallow marine-type sedimentary rocks regarding their major and rare earth element contents. The abundances of SiO2, Al2O3, TiO2, K2O and Fe2O3 decrease in the following order: claystone > oil shale > marl. CaO and MgO abundances are ranked in the decreasing order as follows: marl > oil shale > claystone. These results reveal the presence of two different genetic groups - detrital and marine. The same groups were also established in the correlation studies of elements. TOT/C and TOC contents of rocks observe the following order: oil shale > marl > claystone, and as a result of variations in redox conditions they also vary in a wide range. Total carbon and total organic carbon are positively correlated with the group representing clays and negatively correlated with CaO, MgO and MnO. That is why TOT/C and TOC are associated with clays. The positive correlations between some major oxides (e.g. SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, TiO2 and K2O) and REE might indicate that clays and iron oxy-hydroxyls play an important role in transportation and deposition processes. The only slight negative Ce and positive Eu anomalies and Ce/Ce* and Eu/Eu* values recorded in the depositional environment indicate low oxygenated and anaerobic (reducing) conditions.

Immunological biomarkers reflect the effects of exposure to environmental contaminants. In this study, the suitability and sensitivity of cytokine responses, interleukin 1 beta (IL-1 beta), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in gill tissues of Capoeta umbla (Heckel, 1843), collected from different regions, as early warning indices of environmental pollution and ecosystem health was evaluated. Fish and water samples were taken from ten stations in March and September 2011 and 2012. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha, IL-1 beta and IL-6 levels were determined in samples of the gill tissues by using an ELISA kit. Significant variations of TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta and IL-6 levels observed between stations and seasons. The results of this study show that seasonal variations of cytokine responses in gills of Capoeta umbla are sensitive to the contaminants present in Uzuncayir Dam Lake (Tunceli, Turkey) water and are valuable biomarkers for environmental pollution and ecosystem health.

Yamadag Volcanics which is one of the examples of the Late Miocene volcanism in Eastern Anatolia covers large areas within the boundaries of Arguvan county of Malatya. The gemstones, subject of this research range from a few centimeters to about 30-40 cm in size and are formed in the cavities of the basalts beonging to Yamadag volcanics. These gemstones seem to have formed as veins extending in east-west direction and consist of opal (opal-CT) and chrysocolla. Opal formations have various colours such as white, brown, yellow and greenish, while chrysocolla formations are bluish-greenish in color. both opal and chrysocolla are of massive type and their fresh surfaces display waxy luster. Mineral paragenesis and formation conditions of gemstones and are determined by applying XRD, SEM, FT-IR techniques. ICP-MS technique is used for the determination of the geochemical compositions. The gemological characteristics are identified via cabochon and facet cut techniques by using diamond coating blade, sintered diamond abrasive discs and polishing machine. Opals are usually composed of tridymite minerals, also in some cases quartz and cristobalite minerals accompany the tridymite minerals. The EDX measurements reveal, enrichment of Fe and Al in opals, and of Cu in chrysocolla. The ICP-MS measurements, in chrysocollas reveal, enrichments in LIL elements such as Ba, Sr and in HFS elements such as U. Consequently, gemological studies show that the chrysocolla and opals in study area, which have waxy luster and massive structure, are suitable for utilization as a gemstone due to its color, hardness, durability, homogeneous distribution of color and processability.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2015Scopus SJRQ2An Effective Schema for Solving Some Nonlinear Partial Differential Equation Arising In Nonlinear Physics
Baskonus, Haci Mehmet; Bulut, Hasan
In this paper, a new computational algorithm called the Improved Bernoulli sub-equation function method has been proposed. This algorithm is based on the Bernoulli Sub-ODE method. Firstly, the nonlinear evaluation equations used for representing various physical phenomena are converted into ordinary differential equations by using various wave transformations. In this way, nonlinearity is preserved and represent nonlinear physical problems. The nonlinearity of physical problems together with the derivations is seen as the secret key to solve the general structure of problems. The proposed analytical schema, which is newly submitted to the literature, has been expressed comprehensively in this paper. The analytical solutions, application results, and comparisons are presented by plotting the two and three dimensional surfaces of analytical solutions obtained by using the methods proposed for some important nonlinear physical problems. Finally, a conclusion has been presented by mentioning the important discoveries in this study.

Eristi, Huseyin; Yildirim, Ozal; Eristi, Belkis; Demir, Yakup
In this paper, a new optimal feature selection based power quality event recognition system is proposed for the classification of power quality events. While Apriori algorithm is capable of processing categorical data, an effective feature vector, which represents distinctive features of digital power quality event data, has been obtained by means of the proposed k-means based Apriori algorithm feature selection approach. The proposed k-means based Apriori algorithm feature selection approach is presented with a power quality event recognition system. In the power quality event recognition system, normalization and segmentation processes have been applied to three-phase event voltage signals. Using 9-level multiresolution analysis, wavelet transform coefficients of the event signals have been obtained. By applying nine different feature extraction processes to these coefficients, a 90 dimensional feature vector belonging to three-phase event voltage signals has been extracted. Optimal feature vector has been obtained by applying the k-means based Apriori algorithm feature selection approach to the obtained feature vector, which has been applied as the last step to the input of the least squares support vector machine classifier and recognition performance results have been obtained. Real power quality event data have been used to evaluate the performance of the proposed feature selection approach and power quality event recognition system. According to the results, the proposed k-means based Apriori algorithm feature selection approach and power quality event recognition system are efficient, reliable and applicable and classify three-phase event types with a high degree of accuracy. Gul, Muhammet; Ak, M. Fatih; Guneri, Ali Fuat
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is a basis to reduce occupational accidents in an acceptable level, and it covers employee health, safety, and welfare in the workplaces. Hospitals as the largest employer group in healthcare industry in Turkey face major hazards categorized as chemical, biological, physical, ergonomic, and psychosocial risks. Although Turkey demonstrates rapid economic growth, OHS practices have not been fully put into practice, and necessary attention has not been paid to the health industry. For this reason, this paper aims to assess risks for health staff, contribute for planning of health services, and enhance regulations. A case study was carried out in a leading hospital in Turkey using a two-stage fuzzy multi-criteria approach, which provides more consistency in decision-making process and gives an appropriate final rank of hazard types. Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) is used in weighing five risk parameters, which are severity, occurrence, undetectability, sensitivity to maintenance non-execution, and sensitivity to personal protective equipment (PPE) non-utilization. The fuzzy VIKOR (FVIKOR) approach is then applied for prioritization of hazard types in each department of the hospital. On conclusion of the hazard control hierarchy, measures are overtaken for the hazards, and areas open for improvement are presented.

Polat, Mehmet; Oksuztepe, Eyyup; Kurum, Hasan
Switched reluctance motors (SRMs) require sensitive rotor information in order to work sensitively and properly and especially for the commutation of phase currents. Position information is generally acquired from a sensor which is generally placed into the stator or connected to the rotor. However, sensors have disadvantages in terms of cost, safety, complexity and volume. In order to remove these disadvantages, recent studies concentrate on SRMs working without a position sensor. In this study control methods working without a position sensor are examined, the applied method is presented comprehensively. The education and test data of the artificial neural network is not obtained from simulation or experimental results; it is obtained from magnetic analyses carried out in ANSYS 10 and the results are used in position speed and current sensorless control of SRM. The validity of proposed method is demonstrated by using DS 1103.
