Yesillik, S.; Yildirim, N.; Dikici, A.; Yildiz, A.
In this study, the antibacterial effects of homemade yoghurt, commercial yoghurt, commercial kefir and probiotic yoghurt on viability of Salmonella typhimurium (ATCC 14028), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) and Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) was investigated by using disc diffusion method. Antibaterial effects of the samples were tested at 24, 48 h and the 7 day intervals. Homemade yoghurt showed the maximum antibacterial effect against the pathogens. It was determined that the most sensitive pathogenic bacteria to dairy products were Salmonella typhimurium whereas the least sensitive pathogen was Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Comparing to the antimicrobial effect of 0.9% lactic acid which was used as positive control, our results concluded that the bacteria found in fermented dairy products have an antibacterial activity and this activity is not caused by only lactic acid.

- MakaleYalnız künye2013Scopus SJRQ2Relationship between fatigue and social support in hemodialysis patients
Karadag, Ezgi; Kilic, Serap Parlar; Metin, Ozgur
The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between fatigue and social support in hemodialysis patients in Turkey. This study was conducted on 73 patients receiving hemodialysis treatment in a hemodialysis unit in the province of Malatya between July and November 2011. A questionnaire consisting of 16 questions for sociodemographic and disease data was used together with the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS). In statistical evaluation, the Mann-Whitney U-test, independent t-test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Pearson's correlation analysis were used. Correlation analysis between severity of fatigue in hemodialysis patients and social support revealed a significant relationship in the negative direction between fatigue severity and support from family (r=-0.404, P<0.05), support from friends (r=-0.635, P<0.05), support from a special person (r=-0.638, P<0.05) and overall support (r=-0.643, P<0.05). Patients with severe fatigue had low mean scores for support from family, friends, a special person and overall, whereas a high level of social support decreased the level of fatigue. When giving care to patients on hemodialysis, nurses should consider the effect of social support on fatigue and approach their patients from this perspective.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2014Scopus SJRQ1Automatic recognition system of underlying causes of power quality disturbances based on S-Transform and Extreme Learning Machine
Eristi, Huseyin; Yildirim, Ozal; Eristi, Belkis; Demir, Yakup
In this paper, a new S-Transform and Extreme Learning Machine (ST-ELM)-based event recognition approach for the purpose of classifying power quality (PQ) event signals automatically has been proposed. In this approach, the distinctive features of the PQ event signals have been obtained with the S-Transform-based feature extraction. The feature vector obtained with feature extraction has been applied as input to the ELM classifier. Ten different classification procedures were determined within the framework of this study to assess the performance of the ELM classifier on PQ event data. Real PQ event data and synthetic PQ event data obtained from MATIAB/Simulink environment have been used in these procedures. Also, three different PQ event data sets, which are formed by adding noises of 20, 30 and 50 dB to the synthetic PQ event data respectively, have been used in order to assess the performance of the proposed approach on noisy conditions. According to the results of performance evaluations, the proposed ST-ELM-based PQ event recognition system has a very high performance of recognizing PQ event data. Besides, classification of noisy data showed that the proposed approach is robust at recognizing noisy data. The performance of the ST-ELM-based recognition system on PQ data shows that this approach has an effective recognition structure that can be used in real power systems. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. - MakaleYalnız künye2016Scopus SJRQ3EFFECT OF SALICYLIC ACID AND SELENIUM ON ANTIOXIDANT SYSTEM OF AVENA SATIVA L. UNDER FENOXAPROP-P-ETHYL STRESS
Yigit, Emel; Akbulut, Gulcin Beker; Bayram, Dilek; Kaya, Armagan; Gok, Yetkin
The present study focuses on understanding the role of different antioxidants in plant defense against oxidative stress caused by fenoxaprop-p-ethyl herbicide. Besides ameliorative effect of exogenously applied salicylic acid (SA) and selenium (Se) on fenoxaprop-p-ethyl-induced toxicity was examined in Avena sativa L. It was determined that the MDA (malondialdehyde) content in the groups to which only herbicide was applied was higher than that of the groups to which SA and Se applied together with the herbicide. In plants exposed to fenoxaprop-p-ethyl, the activities of peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase (GR) and content of glutathione (GSH) increased in the treatment groups compared to the control groups. The antioxidant activity increased in the control and treatment groups that were pre-treated with SA and Se compared to the groups that were not pre-treated with SA and Se. While catalase activity (CAT) decreased in SA pre-treated plants, it increased in Se pre-treated plants. These results indicate that the fenoxaprop-p-ethyl induces various plant defense responses in target plants and that treatment with exogenous SA and Se can increase stress resistance by altering these responses.

In this study, the diazotized o-chloraniline was coupled with malononitrile. The ring closure reaction of the obtained product with hydrazine monohydrate yielded 4-(2-chlorophenylazo)-1H-pyrazole-3,5-diamine (L). The structure of ligand has been elucidated by spectroscopic analyses. Then, novel Ni(II), Cu(II), Cd(II) complexes of ligand have been synthesized and the structures of these complexes determined by elemental analysis, spectrometric and TGA/DTA methods and magnetic susceptibility measurements. All complexes were monomeric and diamagnetic. From the elemental analyses and mass spectra data, the complexes were proposed to the formulae [Ni2L2(Cl)(2)]center dot 2Cl center dot 0.5DMF center dot 0.5H(2)O(2), [Cu3L2(Cl)(4)(OH)(2)(H2O)(2)]center dot 0.5H(2)O and [Cd3L2(Cl)(2)(OH)(2)](Cl)(2)center dot 1.5H(2)O. For the Ni(II) complex square planar and for the Cu(II) complex octahedral geometry were proposed, but the Cd(II) complex includes both four and six coordinated structures. The Cu(II) and the Cd(II) complexes were found to be trinuclear. On the other hand the Ni(II) complex was found to be dinuclear.

- MakaleYalnız künye2016Scopus SJRQ1A fuzzy multi criteria risk assessment based on decision matrix technique: A case study for aluminum industry
Gul, Muhammet; Guneri, Ali Fuat
Decision matrix risk-assessment (DMRA) technique is a systematic approach widely used in the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) risk assessment. In a typical matrix method approach, a measure of risk value is obtained by evaluating two risk factors as the likelihood of a hazard and the severity of the hazard when it arises. In this paper, a fuzzy approach enabling experts to use linguistic variables for evaluating two factors which are the parameters of matrix method is proposed to deal with shortcomings of a crisp risk score calculation and to decrease the inconsistency in decision making. The parameters likelihood and severity related to the hazards in an aluminum plate manufacturing plant are weighted by using Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP), then the orders of priority of 23 various hazard groups are determined by using Fuzzy TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method. As a follow-up study of the case application, the proposed risk assessment methodology is applied for hazard types in each department of the plant. Depending on the hazard control hierarchy, control measures are overtaken for the hazards that are placed at first of intra-department rankings. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this study, some transition metal complexes of the bis(2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazolyl)methane (L) derived from the condensation of malonic acid and thiosemicarbazide, have been synthesized and characterized by IR, H-1-NMR spectra, elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibility and thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA). Coordination numbers of monomeric, Ni(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II) complexes and dimeric Cu(II) complex were found to be four, five, six, and five, respectively. According to the elemental analyses and mass spectra data, the following complex formulas were proposed;[Ni-2(L)(SO4)(2)(H2O)(2)]center dot CH3OH center dot 0.5H(2)O, [Cu(L)(SO4)(H2O)](2)DMF center dot 3H(2)O, [Zn(L)NO3 center dot H2O]center dot NO3 center dot DMF, and [Cd(L)(2)(NO3)H2O]NO3 center dot DMF. Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes were paramagnetic. Ni(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II) complexes were proposed to be tetrahedral/square planar, square pyramidal, and octahedral structure, respectively. Zn(II) complex is five coordinated. The molar conductance data revealed that Zn((II), and Cd(II) complexes were 1:1 electrolytes(ionic). Ni(II), and Cu(II) complexes were non-electrolytes.

Ates, Mehmet; Arslan, Zikri; Demir, Veysel; Daniels, James; Farah, Ibrahim O.
Dietary and waterborne exposure to copper oxide (CuO) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) was conducted using a simplified model of an aquatic food chain consisting of zooplankton (Artemia salina) and goldfish (Carassius auratus) to determine bioaccumulation, toxic effects, and particle transport through trophic levels. Artemia contaminated with NPs were used as food in dietary exposure. Fish were exposed to suspensions of the NPs in waterborne exposure. ICP-MS analysis showed that accumulation primarily occurred in the intestine, followed by the gills and liver. Dietary uptake was lower, but was found to be a potential pathway for transport of NPs to higher organisms. Waterborne exposure resulted in about a 10-fold higher accumulation in the intestine. The heart, brain, and muscle tissue had no significant Cu or Zn. However, concentrations in muscle increased with NP concentration, which was ascribed to bioaccumulation of Cu and Zn released from NPs. Free Cu concentration in the medium was always higher than that of Zn, indicating CuO NPs dissolved more readily. ZnO NPs were relatively benign, even in waterborne exposure (p0.05). In contrast, CuO NPs were toxic. Malondialdehyde levels in the liver and gills increased substantially (p<0.05). Despite lower Cu accumulation, the liver exhibited significant oxidative stress, which could be from chronic exposure to Cu ions. (c) 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Environ Toxicol 30: 119-128, 2015.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of lactic acid against Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli (O157:1-17 and non-O157 serogroups including O103, O111, O145 and O26) at different conditions. Soybean sprouts and spinach leaves inoculated with each serogroup of E. coli (similar to 7.00 + 1.00 log(10) cfu/g) were treated with the lactic acid solutions at different concentrations (0% (control), 1.5%, 2.0%, or 2.5%) and at different temperatures (20, 40, or 50 degrees C) for 3 min. Results indicated that regardless of the treatment temperature, no significant reduction in the numbers of any serogroup occurred in the control group (0%) (p > 0.05). However, lactic acid at concentration of 1.5%, 2% and 2.5% was found to be effective against all organisms tested. There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) between E. coli O157:H7 and non-O157 STEC serogroups at any treatment group. The highest reductions (ca. 400 log(10) cfu/g) of all serotypes in both produces were observed after immersing into 2.5% lactic acid at 50 degrees C. The results of this study showed that decontamination of fresh produces such as spinach and soybean sprout with lactic acid solutions prepared at mild temperatures (40 degrees C and 50 degrees C) might be an effective safety measure in preventing public health risks associated with these products contaminated with STEC. In this study, Artemia salina (crustacean filter feeders) larvae were used as a test model to investigate the toxicity of aluminum oxide nanoparticles (Al2O3 NPs) on marine microorganisms. The uptake, toxicity, and elimination of -Al2O3 (50 nm and 3.5 m) and -Al2O3 (5 nm and 0.4 m) NPs were studied. Twenty-four and ninety-six hour exposures of different concentrations of Al2O3 NPs to Artemia larvae were conducted in a seawater medium. When suspended in water, Al2O3 NPs aggregated substantially with the sizes ranging from 6.3 nm to >0.3 mu m for spherical NPs and from 250 to 756 nm for rod-shaped NPs. The phase contrast microscope images showed that NPs deposited inside the guts as aggregates. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis showed that large particles (3.5 m -Al2O3) were not taken up by Artemia, whereas fine NPs (0.4 m -Al2O3) and ultra-fine NPs (5 nm -Al2O3 and 50 nm -Al2O3) accumulated substantially. Differences in toxicity were detected as changing with NP size and morphology. The malondialdehyde levels indicated that smaller -Al2O3 (5 nm) NPs were more toxic than larger -Al2O3 (0.4 mu m) particulates in 96 h. The highest mortality was measured as 34% in 96 h for -Al2O3 NPs (5 nm) at 100 mg/L (LC50 > 100 mg/L). -Al2O3 NPs were more toxic than -Al2O3 NPs at all conditions. (c) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. - MakaleYalnız künye2017Scopus SJRQ2Palaeoseismic history of the eastern part of the North Anatolian Fault (Erzincan, Turkey): Implications for the seismicity of the Yedisu seismic gap
Zabci, Cengiz; Akyüz, H. Serdar; Sançar, Taylan
The North Anatolian Fault showed a remarkable seismic activity especially between 1939 and 1999, when the westward migrating earthquake sequence created surface ruptures more than 1000 km, leaving unbroken only the Marmara segments, to the west, and the Yedisu Segment, to the east along the main strand of the fault. To understand the palaeoseismicity of the Yedisu Seismic Gap, we undertook trench investigations close to the village of Balaban SarA +/- kaya, on the western part of the Yedisu Segment. We found evidence for at least five surface faulting earthquakes, from which only two are correlated with the 18 July 1784 CE and 27 June 1583 CE historical events. Although the surface rupture of the 1784 CE was reported by other trench studies, the evidence of 1583 CE event is presented for the first time. In consideration with other historical earthquakes, affecting the region east of Erzincan, we suggest that this particular section of the North Anatolian Fault may be in a seismically quiescent period, following a cluster of earthquakes in its near history. In order to test this hypothesis, further studies are needed to increase our knowledge on the temporal and spatial seismic behaviour of the Yedisu Segment, which has potential to create an earthquake with M (w) similar to 7.2 in the near future.

The micromorphological and anatomical investigations on 6 taxa of Conringia Heist. ex Fabr. growing in Turkey were carried out. The anatomy of root, stem and leaves was examined in detail. In micromorphological studies stem and leaf surface of species was examined. Mesophyll type of lamina is dorsiventral (Conringia planisiliqua, C. persica, C. austriaca) and equifacial (C. clavata, C.grandiflora, C. orientalis). Stomata situated on both surfaces, are anisocytic and rarely anomocytic types. Crystals of calcium oxalate observed in only one species (C. grandiflora) was found to have cubic type parenchyma cells of the stem and leaf In micromorphological studies the surface of the stem and leaves were found to be glabrous. Epidermal surface of leaves was observed to be covered with waxy cuticular particles. Anticlinal walls of the adaxial cells are undulate and rarely straight and anticlinal walls of abaxial epidermis are undulate and rarely sinuate. Periclinal walls were found to be covered with upper waxy layer which was flat. A diagnostic key based on combined stem, leaf and leaf epidermal characteristics are presented. The leaf mesophyll structures, stem vascular bundles number, lignified or unlignified of sclerenchyma, epidermal surface and absence or presence of crystals were found to be important characters for the identification of Conringia species.

Lead (Pb) is a widespread environmental pollutant that induces systemic toxicity in aquatic organisms primarily through oxidative stress, hematological disruption, and immune dysfunction. This study investigated the protective effects of ellagic acid (EA) against Pb-induced toxicity in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) using a multi-biomarker approach and molecular docking. Fish were assigned to six experimental groups: control, EA-treated, Pb-I, Pb-I + EA, Pb-II, and Pb-II + EA. Fish in the Pb-I and Pb-II groups were exposed to 2.5 and 5 mg/L Pb, respectively, while EA was administered via diet at 100 mg/kg for 14 days. At the end of the exposure period, hematological indices, innate immune parameters, and oxidative stress biomarkers were assessed in blood, liver, kidney, and gill tissues. Pb exposure caused marked hematological impairment, suppressed immune responses, increased malondialdehyde levels, and disrupted antioxidant defense by reducing SOD, CAT, GSH-Px, and GSH levels while increasing GST activity. In contrast, dietary EA supplementation significantly mitigated Pb-induced alterations, improved hematological and immunological responses, reduced lipid peroxidation, restored antioxidant capacity, and normalized GST activity to control levels. Molecular docking analyses further showed that EA interacts with hemoglobin and immunoglobulin M, supporting its potential role in preserving oxygen transport and immune functions under Pb-induced stress. Overall, the findings demonstrate that Pb-induced toxicity involves coordinated disruption of redox homeostasis and immune function, whereas EA exerts a multi-target protective effect through biochemical and molecular mechanisms. This study provides mechanistic insight into chemical-biological interactions and supports the potential application of natural bioactive compounds in mitigating heavy metal-induced toxicity.

The effect of the duration of simulated transportation on blood SOD (Superoxide Dismutase), GSH-Px (Glutathione Peroxidase), AST (Aspartate Transaminase), ALT (Alanine Transaminase), GGT (Gamma-Glutamyl Transpeptidase), LDH (Lactic Dehydrogenase) enzyme levels and NO (Nitric Oxide) and MDA (Malondialdehyde) product levels was investigated in Japanese quails. Simulated transportation was carried out with a road simulator which was calibrated for Turkish roads conditions. Animals were loaded into well ventilated carrier boxes and carried at 2 and 5 h on the simulator. Blood samples were collected from 10-weeks-old Japanese Quails just after transportation. A significant (p<0.05) increase in all measured plasma parameters (except GGT) at 5 h transportation was observed. However, all of the plasma parameters have not shown a significant increase at 2 h transportation. This transportation duration might be the evidence of the time duration in still safe zone for Japanese Quails for that condition.

In this study, an effective cation exchanger was developed from the pine cone by citric acid modification and its hardness removal properties from the waters were investigated. For this purpose, ground pine cone samples were subjected to a citric acid modification following NaOH saponification. Both of the raw (RPC) and modified pine cone (MPC) samples were subjected to standardized hardness removal tests by shaking with hard waters. These tests showed that citric acid modification significantly increases the cation exchange capacity of the pine cone. Most suitable size fraction of pine cone was determined as -16 + 30 mesh (600 mu m < x < 1200 mu m). Also, citric acid modified product obtained from this fraction was used in a continuous system to remove hardness from water. The results of this study showed that the MPC can be used for hardness removal from waters as a cheap, durable and environment -friendly material. Finally, regeneration experiments showed that the MPC can be used for hardness removal from water repeatedly by a simple HCl regeneration. (C) 2015 Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers. Kaplan, Olcay; Ince, Muharrem; Yaman, Mehmet
Cd concentrations in mobile phases of soil are more representative than total Cd concentration for estimating Cd bioavailability, physicochemical reactivity and mobility. In this study, selective sequential extraction procedures were used to determine Cd in different soil phases. Soil samples and plants grown in these soils were collected from a serpentine and copper-mining area in Maden-Elazig-Turkey. The extracted fractions were exchangeable/carbonate, reducible-iron/manganese oxides, oxidizable-organic matter and sulfides, and residual phases except silicates. Concentrations of Cd in soils and plant samples were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. We found that Cd concentrations in the EDTA and NH(2)OH center dot HCl extracts are higher in most soil samples compared to the other extracts. We conclude that Cd levels in mobile phases are unexpectedly high. The observed Cd concentrations are in ranges of 0.03-3.4 mg kg(-1) for soil and 0.02-2.5 mg kg(-1) for plant parts. The percentages of cadmium up to 56% in exchangeable and carbonates fractions were observed to be significantly higher than in those values less than 2% reported in literature. This study has shown that the modified extraction method can be usefully applied to determine Cd concentrations in potentially mobile phase of soil. Furthermore, it was concluded that Brassicasea and Rumex leaves can be used as hyperaccumulator plants because their translocation factor and/or enrichment coefficient values were found to be higher than 1.0.

Biological compounds with antioxidant properties may contribute to the protection of cells and tissues against deleterious effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and other free radicals induced by cisplatin. This study was performed to investigate the possible protective role of antioxidant treatment with grape seed extract (GSE) on cisplatin-induced testes oxidant injury using biochemical approaches. The degree of protection produced by GSE was evaluated by determining the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH), the activity of catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), were estimated from testes of rabbits. Male New Zealand white rabbits were divided into 3 groups (n=6): 1-Control group(1 ml saline. i.p) 2-Cisplatin group (a single dose of cisplatin (5 mg/kg, i.p) 3-A single dose of cisplatin (5 mg/kg, i.p) + GSE (250 mg/kg/day, i.p) for 6 days. MDA level were significantly higher when compared to Control (p < 0.05). In Cisplatin+grapes groups MDA levels were found significantly lower than cisplatin group (p < 0.05). GSH levels were decreased with cisplatin compared to control but in case of cisplatin+ GSE it increased (p < 0.05). In treated rabbits, the activity of CAT and GSH-Px was decreased in cisplatin and cisplatin+ GSE groups compared to control (p < 0.001). These results indicate that the antioxidant GSE might have a protective effect against cisplatin-induced testiculer damage and oxidative stress in rabbit.

This study was conducted to induce experimental infection in rainbow trout with Y. ruckeri, the causative agent of ERM disease and progress of the disease was then monitored over the time period. Application of PCR for early and accurate diagnosis of infection was also investigated. Total 100 fish were allocated to four experimental and a control group each containing 20 fish. There were 20 aquaria and five fish were housed in each aquaria. There were 4 replicates for each group. Fish, at an average weight of 75 g, were injected intramuscularly with 0.1 ml dilutions of Y. ruckeri at various doses (4x10(8), 1x10(8), 4x10(4) and 1x10(4) per ml) in the experimental groups. Blood samples were collected from fish that showed typical signs of the disease. DNA's extracted from blood samples were subjected to PCR amplification based upon a pair of Y. ruckeri specific primers. Following agarose gel electrophoresis of the PCR products, positive bands with the molecular size of approximately 589 bp which were considered indicative for identification as Y. ruckeri were observed. In addition, isolation and identification of Y. ruckeri from various internal organs of infected fish were made by conventional culture method. The results suggested that early diagnosis of ERM disease can be made while fish are alive and diseased fish can be isolated and treated accordingly which will help decrease economic losses.
