This paper provides a comprehensive and comprehensible analysis of the conversion of magnetic energy in magnetocaloric materials, as well as the application of magnetic refrigeration that relies on the magnetocaloric effect. The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) refers to the phenomenon of cooling or heating that takes place in a magnetic material when an external magnetic field is introduced or removed under adiabatic conditions. This effect also occurs in reverse, when the application or removal of an external magnetic field induces cooling or warming in the material. For a considerable period, the phenomena referred to as “adiabatic demagnetization” has been recognized, wherein the practical use of the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in magnetic materials is observed. Magnetic materials exhibit the phenomenon known as the magnetocaloric effect close to their critical temperature. The magnetocaloric system exhibits superior environmental friendliness and efficiency compared to conventional refrigeration cycle systems that rely on vapor compression. Magnetic refrigeration is a cooling system that operates by utilizing the magnetocaloric effect. This methodology can be employed to achieve reduced temperatures, including those within the typical operational range of conventional refrigeration systems. In the realm of magnetic and electromagnetic energy conversion, the system's coefficient of performance (COP) attains a theoretical efficiency of 30%–60% of the Carnot cycle. The exploration of magnetic refrigeration is now underway, with a focus on utilizing low magnetic fields in the vicinity of room temperature. The objective is to facilitate the development of commercial devices that employ permanent magnets as the primary source of magnetic field. The utilization of a magnetocaloric heat pump in a magnetic refrigerator is employed as a cooling mechanism, relying on magnetocaloric materials. These materials present a promising substitute for conventional refrigeration technology that relies on compressors. Theoretical investigations have indicated that refrigeration systems utilizing the magnetocaloric effect have the potential to achieve energy efficiency levels that are around 35% higher compared to vapor compression systems. In addition, it should be noted that cooling systems utilizing magnetocaloric materials exhibit reduced noise levels as a result of the lack of a compressor. This particular technological approach involves the utilization of coolants that are water-based, as opposed to the conventional use of gaseous refrigerants.

Aydin, Sevinc
As a result of the gradual decrease in natural resources and the increase in chronic diseases caused by unhealthy nutrition, the inclination among consumers toward food products that are both biologically active and beneficial, and environmentally friendly, is increasing. Therefore, environmental factors and agricultural practices that affect the amount of biologically active ingredients in these products have gained importance and become the subject of numerous scientific studies. Goldenberry (Physalis peruviana) is a yearly plant that is grown in mild climates, and it is a plant that is first planted in seed trays for primary development and then in the field for fruit production. Both its leaves, trunk, and roots have medicinal properties and its fruit is rich in components such as vitamins A and C, iron and phosphorus, flavonoid, and carotenoid which have made this plant, and particularly its fruit, more attractive. The amount and biological effect of these components, which are known as secondary metabolites, vary depending on the soil and the climate where this plant is grown and agricultural practices. With this compilation study, our aim is to summarize the studies that examined the positive or negative effects of environmental conditions that affect goldenberry cultivation and agricultural practices applied to increase the yield of the bioactive phytochemical ingredients of this plant, and thus to provide insight for relevant studies to be conducted.

Increasing energy costs of the food industry and the necessity to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases orient the researchers to find alternative solutions to increase energy efficiency, and to decrease waste and environmental damage. Hence, the use of novel technologies comes to the fore. Since volumetric heating could be provided by Ohmic and microwave heating methods, a heating medium is not required. Thus it is possible to reduce undesirable changes in quality attributes by eliminating contact with hot surfaces and providing rapid heating. The negative effects on the environment could also be reduced owing to both utilization of efficient energy for the heating process and the elimination of wastewater. Alternative nonthermal methods including ultrasound, membrane filtration, pulsed electric field, and electroplasmolysis techniques could also be applied. In this chapter, recent studies on the evaporation techniques, regarding their system setups, effects on the quality characteristics, and performance evaluations are reviewed.
- Kitap BölümüAçık Erişim2023Production technique–structure relationship in bioceramic-coated scaffold applications
Aslan, Naim; Topuz, Mehmet; Aksakal, Bunyamin; Dikici, Burak
It is well known that the surface of metal-based implants is very resistive in aggressive body environments due to the noble oxide layer naturally formed on their surfaces. However, their osseointegration properties are very low. By the way, specific cells attached are desired on the implant surface when the surface of an implant connects with tissue in many circumstances. Thus in parallel with technological developments, biomedical engineering focuses on the growth of new tissue on the implant surface or in the porosities of the implant. The bulk properties of metallic scaffolds, especially Young’s modulus, can be controlled by the porosity ratio of the scaffold but cannot form a bond between the implant and tissue interfaces. Thus the coating of scaffold walls with a bioactive material is required. In this chapter, bioceramic coating techniques of scaffolds, mechanical and corrosion behavior, biocompatibility, and interactions of surface/tissue interface, especially considering the last published reports, were reviewed, in detail.

Farooqi, Ammad Ahmad; Ozbey, Ulku; Pimentel, Tatiana Colombo; Attar, Rukset
The magical little fruits have started to gain attention because of their cancer chemopreventive roles against different cancers. More recently, cancer inhibitory properties of blueberry extracts and isolated bioactive constituents have been described that provide new mechanistic insights. However, there are visible knowledge gaps in our understanding about metastasis inhibitory role of blueberries in xenografted mice. Despite mainstream popularization of cancer chemopreventive role of blueberries, many questions remain about their precise role in the regulation of deregulated oncogenic cascades in metastasis. It will be really exciting to consider how new scientific breakthroughs in future might propel the science of nutrigenomics to a more sophisticated level of inquiry.

Ates, Mehmet; Tanaydın, Mehmet Kayra; Yılmaz, Ersen
Nanomaterials are composed of several atoms or molecules, which may be of various sizes and morphologies. Manmade nanomaterials are specially produced to take advantage of the unique properties of nanoscale. There are many metal chalcogenides with different structures and compositions such as CdSe, InAs, CdS, GaN, InGeAs, CdTe, PbS, PbSe, ZnS, Na2S, CaTe, Ti2S, and Cu2Se. The diversity of metal chalcogenides is related to the orbit of transition metals. In this chapter, new studies using chalcogenide compounds as photocatalysts were explained under the subtopics of metal chalcogenides and their properties, semiconductive nanostructures, nanomaterial production technique, chemical synthesis methods, and metal chalcogenides as photocatalysts. Novel applications of metal chalcogenide-based materials like water splitters, organic pollutant degraders, self-cleaning agents chalcogenide glasses and thermoelectric materials are explained in detail under the relevant headings. Future prospects of chalcogenides are also evaluated from a different perspective.

- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2020Microbial release of exopolymeric substances and their role in removal of pollutants from wastewater
Işıl Arslan Topal, E.; Topal, Murat
Activated sludge samples were seasonally collected from the aeration tanks of the Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant located in Elazığ city (Turkey). Mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS), mixed liquor volatile suspended solids (MLVSS), total solids (TS), suspended solids (SS), volatile solids (VS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and sludge volume index (SVI) of the activated sludge were seasonally monitored in the treatment plant. Exopolymeric substances (EPS) were extracted in the samples collected. The EPS decreased in summer, while the EPS content was the highest in winter. The TB-EPS part of EPS was higher than the LB-EPS part of the EPS in all seasons. The lowest TB-EPS and LB-EPS were determined in summer, while the highest TB-EPS and LB-EPS were determined in winter. The carbohydrate, protein, and humic substance fractions of TB-EPS and LB-EPS followed the order of protein > carbohydrate > humic substance in all seasons. There was a negative correlation between the EPS content and SVI. The relationships between EPS and the removal efficiencies of TS, SS, and VS were quite low, while the relationship between COD removal and EPS was quite high.
