Alternative α* Parameter Estimation for Simplified Beerkan Infiltration Method to Assess Soil Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity

    Yilmaz, D.

Abstract: In situ characterization of the saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) requires a large number of experiments, sampling, and laboratory measurements that are time-consuming and expensive. Simplified Beerkan Infiltration (SBI) method was developed to estimate an approximate Ks based on the infiltration curve without any sampling procedures. For that purpose, α* parameter, which is used in the calculation of Ks, was commonly set to a fixed value based on soil texture. This approach was not sufficient for an accurate Ks estimation. For a relatively dry soil, a new approach involving an empirical structural parameter was proposed to calculate an approximation of the α* parameter based on the shape of the steady state asymptote of the Beerkan cumulative infiltration. The new α* parameter was tested on simplified Beerkan infiltration (SBI) method in over 32 Beerkan experiments selected from the Soil World Infiltration Global (SWIG) database. The steady state SBI (SSBI) method estimated Ks with an accuracy close to those estimated with the BEST (Beerkan Estimation Soil Transfer) method. The R2 correlation factor for the SSBI method in Ks estimation with BEST intercept and steady methods were 0.982 and 0.994, respectively. For the transient SBI method, the R2 correlation factors calculated with BEST methods were lower; 0.858 and 0.827, respectively. Therefore, the application of the new α* parameter to the steady state simplified Beerkan approach allows an easy, inexpensive way to estimate accurately Ks.

Enhanced Adhesion and Corrosion Properties of Boron Doped Bioceramic Coated 316L Implants

    Aksoy, M.E.; Aksakal, B.; Aslan, N.; Dikici, B.

Abstract: In order to provide an effective prevention to 316L implants, a synthesized bioceramic was coated by using electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The effect of boron addition into hydroxyapatite (HA) on surface morphology, adhesion and corrosion resistance of the implant has been examined. Boron doped HA (B–HA) was synthesized by a simple chemical acid-base method with 5, 10, and 15 wt % boron additions to coat on 316L implants. The synthesized B-HA was coated on the substrates and the coated surfaces with and without B additions. Sintering took place at different temperatures and sintering rates. The coatings were characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT–IR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Furthermore, adhesion and in vitro corrosion tests were conducted. The influence of boron additons on adhesion and corrosion resistance of 316L have been revealed for the coated substrates at different B additions. It was shown that boron addition increased the adhesion and corrosion resistance of the bioceramic coatings. Furthermore, the sintering effect on adhesion was also evaluated and the highest adhesion as 25.8 MPa has been reached at 750°C for 90 s and 5°C min–1 sintering conditions. It was found that using iodine as EPD dispersant has increased the charging ability of the B–HA powders in the suspension and hence eased deposition rate. The study revealed that boron-containing hydroxyapatite coatings can provide crack-free surfaces that providing high adhesion and hence increase the corrosion resistance of metallic implants. Through the results, it was also shown that the network between powders was improved and hence adhesion was increased with increasing B addition.

Calculation of Gamma Shielding Properties for Glass Ceramics using FLUKA

Nur, Kuluöztürk Zehra; Demir, Nilgün; Dal, Murat

Abstract: In this paper, gamma radiation shielding properties of same glass ceramics are reported for 356, 662, 1173, and 1330 keV gamma energies. Firstly, the validity of the FLUKA method was determined using the (90–x)TeO2-xMoO3-10ZnO glass system whose shielding parameters were determined by different analytical methods in the literature. The mass attenuation coefficients (µm), half-value layer, and mean free path parameters for the glass ceramic samples were calculated by the FLUKA. When the results obtained with the FLUKA and XCOM database were examined, it was found that glass f6, which is one of the PbO–Al2O3–SiO2–TiO2 glass-ceramic samples, had the highest gamma shielding property among the glass ceramics. Additionally, comparisons show that the FLUKA code is an alternative method to analytical methods for determining gamma shielding parameters and it is a tool that can provide preliminary information and comparisons for experimental studies.
