Iron Age and Later Periods in an Isolated Region: The Bingol-Solhan Fortress

    Danismaz, Harun; Köroglu, Kemalettin

Solhan Kalesi [Solhan Fortress] lies at the western tip of the Solhan Plain from which it derives its name. The fortress site was discovered in 2019 during surveys. Drywall fortifications reinforced with bastions and foundations from various buildings inside the fortification walls have been documented at the site. Ceramics and slag found at Solhan Fortress indicate that the site may have been a tribal center in the Iron Age. However, the architectural features of the fortress, especially the fortifications with bastions, are notably different from other Iron Age sites in the region. Surface finds do not include painted or glazed ceramics from the Medieval Period. Current findings indicate Solhan Fortress to have been inhabited for a long period from the Middle Iron Age to the Medieval Period.

There are a very limited number of studies on plants traditionally used in animal diseases in Turkey. As a result, valuable information is getting lost. Traditional plant use in Genç District (Turkey) was recorded by semi-structured interviews with breeders and shepherds. The collected information was subjected to quantitative analysis using the informant consensus factor. It was recorded that a total of 53 plants from 24 families were used in the traditional treatment of animal diseases. 8 of these plants are endemic plants with a narrow distribution area and were recorded for the first time by us. The breeders stated that they applied such plants to animals with peace in mind as these plants had been used for human treatment as well. This study is the first ethnoveterinary study conducted in the province. Phytochemical studies need to be carried out on medicinal plants used in livestock around Bingöl Province. We believe that the use of this preliminary information obtained from ethnoveterinary studies by researchers will contribute to the production of natural animal medicines.

Active Tectonic Setting and Paleoseismicity of the Sancak-Uzunpazar Fault Zone; [Sancak-Uzunpazar Fay Zonu’nun Genç Tektonik Konumu ve Paleosismitesi]

Selcuk, Azad Saglam; Erturac, Mehmet Korhan; Karabacak, Volkan; Sancar, Taylan; Kul, Ahmet Ozkan; Yavuz, Mehmet Ali

Sancak-Uzunpazar Fault Zone is N40E-trending sinistral shear zone that has a 50 km length and 5 km width between Karakocan (Elazığ) in southwest and Kaynarpınar (Bingöl) in northeast. The fault extends parallelly to East Anatolian Fault is bounded by the North Anatolian Fault to the northeast and Karakoçan Fault to the southeast. Herein, morphological features, the tectonic setting of the Sancak-Uzunpazar Fault Zone and the first paleoseismological studies on it is represented. The Sancak-Uzunpazar Fault Zone is consist of two parallel segments (called East and West) with a 1.5 km distance. Conducted field studies and aerial photogrometry show that the segments exhibit morphological features like faceted surfaces, faulted scarps, shutter ridges, and offset streams. Especially, average offsets are about 7-12 m along the eastern segment while the cumulative maximum offset reaches 1.1 km. Moreover, revealed paleoseismological data show evidence of at least two surface ruptures during Holocene. Obtained morphological data reveal that the Sancak-Uzunpazar Fault Zone may have a relatively lower slip rate when compared to other active faults in the region and the reflection of the slip rate to the morphology is more evident in the eastern segment.
