Phenolic Profiling of Some Bryophyte Species: In Vitro and In Silico Assessment of Their Antimicrobial Potentials

Çambay, Zafer; Uslu, Harun; Coteli, Ebru; Göktaş, Bünyamin; Özdemir Bayçinar, Kevser; Emre, Mustafa Yunus; Güngören, Muhammed; Alataş, Mevlüt

This study explores the phytochemical composition and antimicrobial potential of Palustriella commutata, Philonotis calcarea, Cinclidotus riparius, Rhynchostegium riparioides, Plagiomnium ellipticum, and Porella platyphylla, with a focus on bryophyte species phenolic constituents and biological activities. HPLC analysis identified seven phenolic acids (4-hydroxybenzoic acid, 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, caffeic acid, vanillic acid, syringic acid, and p-coumaric acid) across all species in varying concentrations. In in vitro antimicrobial tests, the bryophyte extracts used showed significant activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 9027), while exhibiting relatively lower inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923). The study showed that all species extracts exhibited comparable activity to erythromycin against P. aeruginosa, while Cinclidotus riparius and Plagiomnium ellipticum extracts showed no activity against S. aureus, and the remaining species exhibited lower activity compared to erythromycin. Molecular docking studies demonstrated strong binding affinities of these phenolics to the active site of the target macromolecule (PDB ID: 3FRQ), suggesting meaningful interactions with residues such as ARG122 and ASN123, similar to erythromycin binding patterns. The findings indicate that bryophyte-derived phenolic compounds possess significant antimicrobial potential and may serve as promising candidates for the development of novel bioactive agents. This study provides a broad framework for the insufficiently researched antimicrobial potential of bryophytes by establishing direct links between species-specific phenolic fingerprints, experimentally observed antibacterial activities, and predicted receptor-level interactions. Further complementary biological studies are needed to confirm and expand upon these results.

The epiphytic bryophyte vegetation of Kamilet Valley (Artvin, Turkey)

Alataş, Mevlüt; Batan, Nevzat; Ezer, Tülay

In this study, the vegetation of epiphytic bryophytes in the Kamilet Valley and its surroundings (Arhavi, Artvin) was investigated. The study area is located within the borders of the Eastern Black Sea Mountains and is one of the 122 important plant areas in Turkey. The investigation of epiphytic bryophyte communities was carried out in 2016 during different vegetation periods according to Braun-Blanquet’s phytosociological methodology. Phytosociological data obtained from 65 relevés were ordinated using detrended correspondence analysis (DECORANA) and classified using two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN). Consequently, six epiphytic bryophyte communities new to Turkey were determined with TWINSPAN and DECORANA: Leucobryo-Tetraphidetum pellucidae, Anomodonto attenuati-Neckeretum crispae, Frullanio tamarisci-Exsertothecetum crispae, Ulotetum crispae, Anomodonto attenuati-Neckeretum crispae-leucodontetosum sciuroidis, and Ulotetum crispae-isothecietosum alopecuroidis. All syntaxa are presented by analyzing them in terms of their ecological and floristic classifications.

© 2018 Institute of Botany and Botanical Garden Jevremovac, Belgrade.; In the present study, epiphytic bryophyte vegetation of the Samanli Mountains (northwest Turkey) was investigated on the basis of 191 relevés taken from the trunks of trees by the Braun- Blanquet method between 2015 and 2016. Nine epiphytic bryophyte associations and three subassociations were determined as a result of this investigation. Among them, two associations and two subassociations, viz., Neckero - Anomodontetum viticulosi, Neckero - Anomodontetum viticulosi - anomodontetosum viticulosi, Syntrichietum laevipilae, and Syntrichietum laevipilae - orthotrichetosum lyellii, were recorded for the first time in Turkey. In addition, epiphytic bryophyte vegetation was classified and ordinated using multivariate analysis techniques such as two-way indicator species analysis and detrended correspondence analysis. Besides that, the life form and life strategies of the species within syntaxa were analysed. As a result, it is established that while perennial stayers with a high sexual reproductive effort were dominant within the epiphytic bryophyte vegetation comparatively, the most abundant life form was the mat rough type.

A new bryophyte community and three new records for the epiphytic bryophyte vegetation of Turkey

    Alataş, Mevlüt; Uyar, Güray

Based on 38 relevés, the Lewinskyetum affinis ass. nov. (Ulotion crispae alliance) was described and characterized as a new epiphytic association from the Abant Mountains (Northwest Turkey). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report about three epiphytic bryophyte associations, namely Dicranetum taurici, Pterigynandretum filiformis, and Orthotricho straminei–Pterigynandretum filiformis, in Turkey. In addition, multivariate analysis techniques such as two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) and detrended correspondence analysis (DECORANA) were used to examine epiphytic bryophyte communities for cluster analysis and ordination analysis, respectively.
