- Kitap BölümüYalnız künye2020A fuzzy decision-making model for the key performance indicators of hospital service quality evaluation
Yucesan, Melih; Mete, Suleyman; Gul, Muhammet; Celik, Erkan
One of the major concerns of the healthcare industry throughout the world is to provide better hospital service quality. Management and delivery of hospital healthcare services are achieved in a competitive environment in Turkey. For this reason, to make better decisions, the services provided by the public and private hospitals should be monitored and evaluated according to the viewpoint of medical stakeholders. This chapter presents a cause-and-effect, decision-making model in evaluating hospital service quality criteria. Since the decision-making process involves the vagueness of human judgments, a combination of fuzzy sets and decisionmaking trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) is used. Results of the study demonstrate that medical equipment level of the hospital, the attitude of nurses and medical staff to patients, pharmacists' advice on medicine preservation, medical staff with professional abilities, outpatient waiting time for medical treatment, and number and quality of the bathrooms available have more impact on the entire hospital service quality. In conclusion, the proposed approach will contribute to better providing of healthcare services at a higher quality level.

Objective: This study aimed at knowing the difference between the pain scores of intrapartum transperineal ultrasonography and vaginal examination. Material and Methods: A total of 146 pregnant women who were in cephalic presentation and active phase of labor at term with low risk were evaluated prospectively by transperineal ultrasonography (TU) and vaginal examination (VE). The active phase of labor was accepted to be 5-6 cm of cervical dilatation, >60% of cervical effacement, and >250 Montevideo units or at least three regular uterine contractions in ten minutes in cardiotocography. Descriptive characteristics and pain scores (using a visual analogue scale) were assessed. Results: The mean value of transperineal ultrasonography pain scores was 5.48±1.39 (minimum 2 and maximum 8) and the mean value of vaginal examination pain scores was 7.12±1.28 (minimum 4 to maximum 10) (p<0.001). The mean transperineal pain scores of nulliparous and multiparous women were 5.93±1.36 and 5.15±1.32, respectively (p<0.001). The mean vaginal examination pain scores of nulliparous women and multiparous women were 7.54±1.23 and 6.82±1.24, respectively (p<0.001). Conclusion: The use of ultrasonography in the follow-up of labor seems to be more acceptable and a less painful method.

Turkey is located on active fault zones such as the East Anatolian Fault (EAF), the North Anatolian Fault (NAF) and the Anatolian-Aegean Subduction Zone (AASZ). Ground seismicity activities of the NAF zone are relatively active compared with other faults. Eleven high-intensity earthquakes have been produced on this fault zone since 1939. Whereas the EAF zone was relatively quiescent in the last century, on the basis of historical records, destructive seismic activities occurred on the EAF zone in the last two decades. In this study, the rupture reason of faults, updated active fault data, and seismic maps are presented briefly. Moreover, failure reasons and failure mechanism of conventional masonry structures damaged from seismic ground motions on the EAF zone are evaluated in detail. Possible solutions are suggested on the basis of seismic codes. For this purpose, EAF-sourced earthquakes, i.e. 2003 Bingöl, 2010 Kovancılar (Elazığ), 2011 Maden (Elazığ), 2011 Tabanlı (Van) and Edremit (Van) hit in last two decades on this fault are investigated. Failures of conventional masonry buildings triggered from these earthquakes are assessed. Statistical evaluation, damage of earthquakes and failure pattern are deeply investigated and revealed. Eventually, one of the most significant reasons of severe damage or collapse to masonry structures due to this seismicity is the inability to construct the structures according to the requirements of seismic codes.

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an important analysis technique with applications in many industrial branches and fields of scientific research. Nowadays, the advantages of LIBS are impaired by the main drawback in the interpretation of obtained spectra and identification of observed spectral lines. This procedure is highly time-consuming since it is essentially based on the comparison of lines present in the spectrum with the literature database. This paper proposes the use of various computational intelligence methods to develop a reliable and fast classification of quasi-destructively acquired LIBS spectra into a set of predefined classes. We focus on a specific problem of classification of paper-ink samples into 30 separate, predefined classes. For each of 30 classes (10 pens of each of 5 ink types combined with 10 sheets of 5 paper types plus empty pages), 100 LIBS spectra are collected. Four variants of preprocessing, seven classifiers (decision trees, random forest, k-nearest neighbor, support vector machine, probabilistic neural network, multi-layer perceptron, and generalized regression neural network), 5-fold stratified cross-validation, and a test on an independent set (for methods evaluation) scenarios are employed. Our developed system yielded an accuracy of 99.08%, obtained using the random forest classifier. Our results clearly demonstrates that machine learning methods can be used to identify the paper-ink samples based on LIBS reliably at a faster rate.

Firat, Erhan; Ozkan, Gokturk M.; Akilli, Huseyin
Abstract: The flow over fixed, hollow, rigid circular cylinders with and without two series of equally spaced holes of equal diameter (0.2 cylinder diameter) along the surface of the cylinder has been studied by means of dye injection flow visualization, particle image velocimetry (PIV), and force measurements. Holes are connecting the front and rear stagnation lines or the upper and lower sides (i.e., they are positioned at ± 90° from the stagnation line) of the cylinder. The center-to-center distance between holes was 7-hole diameter. The experimental data were obtained from water channel and wind tunnel measurements performed at Reynolds numbers of 6900 and 20000, respectively. It was found that cylinder with holes located on the surface at an angle ± 90° from the front stagnation line behaves like a double-chamber synthetic jet actuator when subjected to cross-flow. The interaction of synthetic jet arrays with external flow over the side surfaces instigates the three-dimensional instabilities in the near wake and produces a 14.4% drag reduction compared to the drag of a plain cylinder. It was shown that cylinder with holes located on the surface at angles of 0° and 180° from the front stagnation line also instigates the three-dimensional instabilities in the near wake, but the primary mechanism responsible for drag reduction is self-bleed through downstream holes. This system producing drag reduction was found to have a drag coefficient equal to about 78.9% of that for a plain cylinder. Important flow structures inside and behind the cylinders with holes were also identified. Graphic abstract: [Figure not available: see fulltext.].

Kizak, Volkan; Can, Erkan; Can, Şafak Seyhaneyildiz; Özçiçek, Esin
The efficacy of Cymbopogon citratus essential oil (CcEO) as a herbal anesthetic agent was evaluated for two ornamental fish species, Sciaenochromis fryeri and Labidochromis caeruleus. Fish were exposed to various essential oil concentrations and the lowest effective concentrations were determined according to deep anesthesia (AD<3 min) and full recovery (RF<10 min) times. CcEO showed anesthetic traits and induced AD in S. fryeri and L. caeruleus. The lowest effective concentrations was 200 µl/L for S. fryeri (AD; RF → 122 ± 1.8 s; 638 ± 8.9 s) and 200 µl/L for L. caeruleus (AD; RF → 139 ± 6.9 s; 625 ± 11.1 s). At concentration of 25 µl/L C. citratus essential oil did not induce AD in both of ornamental fish species. No significant differences were found between fish species in terms of induction and recovery times for same concentrations excluding AD time of 200 µl/L concentration. Although the fastest AD were obtained by 300 µl/L, recovery times were prolonged and fish did not full recover in 20 min. Induction and recovery times for CcEO were significantly dependent on concentrations and negative relationships were recorded between AD and RF. Neither mortality nor adverse effects were observed on two fish species. As a result, CcEO showed anesthetic properties for S. fryeri and L. caeruleus.

Dirmenci, Tuncay; Özcan, Taner; Açar, Mikail; Arabacı, Turan; Yazıcı, Türker; Martin, Esra
Origanum munzurense Kit Tan & Sorger (Sect. Brevifilamentum Ietsw.) was described by Kit Tan & Sorger in 1984, and it is an accepted species related to O. acutidens (Hand.-Mazz.) Ietsw. belonging to sect. Brevifilamentum. It is morphologically intermediate between O. acutidens and O. vulgare L. subsp. gracile (K.Koch) Ietsw., and its type locality lies in the overlap zone between the geographic distributions of these two taxa. We hypothesized that O. munzurense is in fact a hybrid between the two aforementioned taxa and we tested this hypothesis with the general morphology, chromosome features, and nuclear (ITS1–ITS2) and chloroplast (rpl32) DNA sequences of specimens of O. munzurense and its putative parental species, O. vulgare subsp. gracile and O. acutidens. The somatic chromosome number of O. munzurense, O. vulgare subsp. gracile and O. acutidens were counted as 2n = 30. Origanum munzurense presented polymorphic sites in the nuclear ITS region, but the chloroplast markers did not allow us to identify the putative maternal of O. munzurense. Our results suggest that O. munzurense is indeed a hybrid, and its rearrangement as a new homoploid hybrid (O. ×munzurense) would be more accurate. These present results support previous reports for the speciation of Origanum members via hybridization.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ3Application of Local Hard Fillet Weld to Repair Damage Caused by Cavitation in Hydroelectric Power Plant
Kahraman, Gökhan; Taşgin, Yahya
Hydroelectric power plants come into prominence worldwide day by day due to their low operating and maintenance costs, environment friendly structure and their use as renewable energy sources. In order to obtain maximum energy from such an important energy source, it is necessary to reduce downtime due to failures. One of the most important failures of hydroelectric power plants is the damage caused to the turbine wheel by cavitation. In this study, a sample with the same material as the turbine wheels of the hydroelectric power plants is provided. The effects of the hard fillet weld on the turbine wheel, which we have applied locally to this material, have been investigated both metallographically and physically. As a result of the research, it is observed that the main material and hard fillet weld are mostly compatible. The damages of the turbine wheel of the hydroelectric power plant have been repaired by applying the same method to the turbine wheel damaged by the cavitation. After 10,000 h of operation, the turbine wheel is inspected again. As a result, it has been determined that the hard fillet weld applied to the turbine wheel surface is resistant to the harmful effects of cavitation.

The objectives of this research are the assessment of secondary effluents (SEs) quality by evaluating chemical parameters and biomarkers. For this purpose, MDA and GSH levels were determined by spectrofotometer. SOD, CAT, and GPX activities were determined by using ELISA kit in the groups of control and the groups exposed to SE. The level of MDA and the activities of SOD in Gammarus pulex vary depending on the exposure time. GSH levels and GSH-PX activities increased in G. pulex exposed to the effluent compared to the control during 24 h and 96 h. CAT activities were in SE group were found lower than the control in G. pulex during 24 h and 96 h. Current experimental results show that SOD, CAT, GPX activities, and GSH and MDA levels in G. pulex are sensitive and appropriate responses for assess the effects of anthropogenic contaminants on the aquatic ecosystems, particularly effluent complex mixtures.

The stone samples of historical monuments around Yıldız Technical University Besiktas Campus were investigated using DNA extraction-PCR-DGGE methods, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), XRF, and other analytical methods to assess stone decay over the centuries. Microbial diversity was examined by classical cultivation and modern diagnostic methods besides modern analysis techniques. The number of the microorganisms in per gram of stone samples was calculated by microbial culture methods. SEM analysis showed that stone surfaces have too many pores, decaying pieces and microbial colony. It is put forth by XRF analysis that stone materials have some elements serving the growth of microorganisms. It was concluded that there is a close connection the stone structure and microbial growth, most likely mineralogical composition, hardness and porosity of stone. Cyanobacterial microorganisms lived on stone surfaces were also determined using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA gene fragments. It was revealed DNA-based molecular analysis of 16S rRNA that 23 bacterial/Cyanobacterial clones were inhabited to stone materials.

Baskonus, Haci Mehmet; Cattani, Carlo
This chapter deals with a nonlinear dynamical system arising in the analysis of the double-chain model in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Bernoulli sub-equation function method and modified exp (-Ω(ξ))-expansion function method to obtain some novel dynamical structures to the nonlinear dynamical system are used. We construct some new exponential, hyperbolic and complex periodic wave solutions to this model. Under some suitable values of parameters, we plot the 2D and 3D graphics of the solutions obtained in this study. All the solutions found in this study satisfy the nonlinear dynamical system. Moreover, these solutions can be used to explain some new significant physical meanings of the nonlinear dynamical model for DNA.

Large rock-slope failures are among the primary geohazards in high mountain areas. These rock avalanches and rockslides constitute most of the world’s largest landslide deposits. This study focuses on the formation and geomorphological activity of the Akdag landslide complex located on the southern slope of Mount Akdag, SW Turkey. We employed detailed mapping in the field, spatial and morphometric analysis using GIS and remote sensing technologies, and surface exposure dating with cosmogenic 36Cl to reconstruct the chronology of the landslide complex. For the analysis of cosmogenic 36Cl, we collected 18 surface samples from calcareous boulders within the landslide deposit. Our field mapping shows that the Akdag rock avalanche is a large and active slope failure developed between carbonates and flysch. The rock-avalanche deposits cover an area of 9.8 km2 and together with the primary and secondary slope failures which form the landslide complex, cover an area of 15 km2. The Akdag rock avalanche is one of the largest (3 × 108 m3) known bedrock landslides in Turkey. Cosmogenic 36Cl exposure ages indicate that the main collapse occurred at 8.3 ± 1.4 ka (2σ), followed by secondary failures. We dated one of the latter to 1.1 ± 0.2 ka (2σ). Based on field evidence, we surmise that increased water discharge in the springs along the carbonate-flysch contact zone played a key role in the Early Holocene failure.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2019Scopus SJRQ3Hybrid parliamentary optimization and big bang-big crunch algorithm for global optimization
Kiziloluk, Soner; Özer, Ahmet Bedri
Researchers have developed different metaheuristic algorithms to solve various optimization problems. The efficiency of a metaheuristic algorithm depends on the balance between exploration and exploitation. This paper presents the hybrid parliamentary optimization and big bang-big crunch (HPO-BBBC) algorithm, which is a combination of the parliamentary optimization algorithm (POA) and the big bang-big crunch (BB-BC) optimization algorithm. The intragroup competition phase of the POA is a process that searches for potential points in the search space, thereby providing an exploration mechanism. By contrast, the BB-BC algorithm has an effective exploitation mechanism. In the proposed method, steps of the BB-BC algorithm are added to the intragroup competition phase of the POA in order to improve the exploitation capabilities of the POA. Thus, the proposed method achieves a good balance between exploration and exploitation. The performance of the HPO-BBBC algorithm was tested using well-known mathematical test functions and compared with that of the POA, the BB-BC algorithm, and some other metaheuristics, namely the genetic algorithm, multiverse optimizer, crow search algorithm, dragonfly algorithm, and moth-flame optimization algorithm. The HPO-BBBC algorithm was found to achieve better optimization performance and a higher convergence speed than the above-mentioned algorithms on most benchmark problems.

İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2018Scopus SJRQ1Application of Artificial Neural Networks to the prediction of out-of-plane response of infill walls subjected to shake table
Onat, Onur; Gul, Muhammet
The main purpose of this paper is to predict missing absolute out-of-plane displacements and failure limits of infill walls by artificial neural network (ANN) models. For this purpose, two shake table experiments are performed. These experiments are conducted on a 1:1 scale one-bay one-story reinforced concrete frame (RCF) with an infill wall. One of the experimental models is composed of unreinforced brick model (URB) enclosures with an RCF and other is composed of an infill wall with bed joint reinforcement (BJR) enclosures with an RCF. An artificial earthquake load is applied with four acceleration levels to the URB model and with five acceleration levels to the BJR model. After a certain acceleration level, the accelerometers are detached from the wall to prevent damage to them. The removal of these instruments results in missing data. The missing absolute maximum out-of-plane displacements are predicted with ANN models. Failure of the infill wall in the out-of-plane direction is also predicted at the 0.79g acceleration level. An accuracy of 99% is obtained for the available data. In addition, a benchmark analysis with multiple regressionis performed. This study validates that the ANN-based procedure estimates missing experimental data more accurately than multiple regression models.

The pollen morphology of eight endemic species of the genus Inula L. (Asteraceae)–I. helenium subsp. orgyalis (Boiss.) Grierson, I. helenium subsp. vanensis Grierson, I. macrocephala Boiss. & Kotschy ex Boiss., I. discoidea Boiss., I. sarana Boiss., I. fragilis Boiss. & Hausskn., I. anatolica Boiss. and I. sechmenii Hartvig & Strid–distributed in Turkey was studied with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. We found that the pollen of these Inula taxa are prolate-spheroidal in shape (except in Inula discoidea), with the polar axis ranging from 19.18 to 33.14 µm and the equatorial diameter ranging from 18.54 to 32.92 µm. The pollen grains are tricolporate and their ornamentation is echinate. The exine thickness ranges from 0.87 to 2.07 µm. As this study demonstrates, results of Principal Component Analysis are revealed that some of the pollen characters, such as spine length and width, are significant morphological characters for taxonomic discrimination of the eight endemic Inula taxa. According to cluster analysis, two main groups of examined taxa are constituted.

Through the use of genomes that have undergone millions of years of evolution, marine Actinobacteria are known to have adapted to rapidly changing environmental pressures. The result is a huge chemical and biological diversity among marine Actinobacteria. It is gradually becoming a known fact that, marine Actinobacteria have the capability to produce nanoparticles which have reasonable sizes and structures with possible applications in biotechnology and pharmacology. Mycobacterium sp. BRS2A-AR2 was isolated from the aerial roots of the mangrove plant Rhizophora racemosa. The Mycobacterium was demonstrated for the first time ever to produce AuNPs with sizes that range between 5 and 55 nm. The highest level absorbance of the biosynthesized AuNPs was typical for actinobacterial strains (2.881 at 545 nm). The polydispersity index was measured as 0.207 in DLS and the zeta potential was negatively charged (− 28.3 mV). Significant vibration stretches were seen at 3314, 2358, 1635 and 667 cm−1 in FT-IR spectra. This demonstrated the possible use of small aliphatic compounds containing –COOH, –OH, –Cl and –NH2 functional groups in the stabilization of the AuNPs. The effect of the biosynthesized AuNPs on HUVEC and HeLA cell lines was measured at 48 h. IC50 values were determined at 3500 µg/ml concentration for HUVEC and HeLA cell lines at 45.25 and 53.41% respectively.

Karaaslan, Nagihan M.; Yaman, Mehmet
The aim of this study was to determine the toxic metal concentrations in chicken meat consumed by the Turkish population and to establish health risk assessment. The concentrations of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb) in chicken meat produced by seven different suppliers were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP- MS). The Cd concentrations in all samples were found to be lower than the maximum allowable concentration (MAC) of 50 Hg kg-1. The Cr and Ni concentrations in all samples were lower than 700 and 450 μg kg-1, respectively, with the exception of Cr in the samples from one producer and of Ni from two other producers. The Pb concentrations (max. 413 μg kg-1) in the samples from three producers were found to be higher than the MAC of 100 μg kg-1. Although the concentrations of lead in some samples exceed the limits set by the authorities, risk of developing cancer over a human lifetime was found to be not significant (between 3 to 16 per 1,000,000 persons).
