Monitoring of Zn and Cr in downstream water from uzunçayir dam in Turkey

    Topal, M.; Arslan Topal, E.I.

In this study, the concentrations of Zn and Cr in downstream waters from Uzunçayir Dam (Tunceli, Turkey) were monitored during spring (March, April, May) and summer (June, July, August) season. Zinc and Cr concentrations in surface water samples were detected using the ICP-MS device. According to the data obtained the lowest Zn and Cr concentrations in the spring season were 65.43±3.2 μg/L in March at 10th day for Zn and 0.28±0.02 μg/L in March at 10th and 20th day for Cr, the highest Zn and Cr concentrations were determined to be 83.12±4.1 μg/L in May at day 30 for Zn and 0.48±0.02 μg/L in May at day 30 for Cr. The lowest Zn and Cr concentrations in summer season were 55.48±2.7 μg/L at 30th day in August for Zn and 0.54±0.03 μg/L at 10th day in June for Cr. The highest Zn and Cr concentration in summer season were found as 69.48±3.5 μg/L in June at day 10 for Zn and 1.23±0.06 μg/L in August at day 30 for Cr. The Zn and Cr concentrations in the downstream of Uzunçayir Dam were found to be smaller than the Zn and Cr concentrations given by the Surface Water Quality Regulation (SWQR). As a result, it was determined that there was no harm in using water from the Uzunçayir Dam as irrigation water or drinking water in terms of Zn and Cr concentrations.

The role of human factor in maritime environment risk assessment: A practical application on Ballast Water Treatment (BWT) system in ship

    Akyuz, Emre; Celik, Erkan

The role of human factor plays a critical role in the safe and clean operation of maritime industry. Human error prediction can be beneficial to assess risk in maritime industry since shipping activities can pose potential hazards to human life and maritime ecology. The aim of this paper is to propose a risk assessment tool by considering the role of human factor. Hence, the desired safety control level in maritime transportation activities can be ascertained. In the proposed approach, a Success Likelihood Index Method (SLIM) extended with fuzzy logic is used to calculate human error probability (HEP). Severity of consequences are adopted in the proposed approach to assess risk. The quantitative risk assessment approach under fuzzy SLIM methodology will be applied to a very specific case on-board ship: Ballast Water Treatment (BWT) system. In order to improve consistency of research and minimize subjectivity of experts' judgments, the paper adopts the dominance factor which is used to adjust the impact level of experts' judgments in the aggregation stage of the methodology. The paper aims at not only highlighting the importance of human factor in maritime risk assessment but also enhancing safety control level and minimizing potential environmental impacts to marine ecology.

Predicting potential links by using strengthened projections in evolving bipartite networks

Aslan, Serpil; Kaya, Buket; Kaya, Mehmet

The link prediction problem can be used for predicting the link changes that are difficult to understand and costly in network science. So far, many different models have been proposed to predict links in the network. Most of the proposed models in the link prediction have focused on the unimodal networks. In this paper, we present a link prediction model that attempts to predict links in the large-scale bipartite networks. The proposed method consists of two stages: The first stage is the extraction of the potential link set. A limitation of the previous works that addressed the link prediction problem in bipartite networks is that only the structural properties of the projected networks that were transformed from the bipartite networks are used to extract the potential links. In this paper, in addition to the structural properties of the projected networks, we take into account the structural properties of the bipartite network. Also, we employ the strengthened projection network model instead of the classical projection network models. The second stage is the calculation of prediction score of each potential link. The classical proximity measures have several disadvantages in dynamic complex networks. When network evolution that considers valuable information between node pairs are ignored, the potential information source is not efficiently used in the link prediction. Therefore, in this stage, we propose a time-aware proximity measure based on social network evolution, instead of classical proximity measures using the current state of the network. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first effort that considers the evolution in bipartite networks. To test the performance of the proposed method, we made some experiments on two real networks that have different frame size. Experimental results show that the success of our method is promising.

Can Toxicities Induced by Insecticide Methomyl be Remediated Via Soil Bacteria Ochrobactrum thiophenivorans and Sphingomonas melonis?

Tatar, Sule; Yildirim, Nuran Cikcikoglu; Serdar, Osman; Erguven, Gokhan Onder

The research study was about revealing the biochemical response of Gammarus pulex related to insecticide methomyl before and after bioremediation by two soil bacteria species, Ochrobactrum thiophenivorans and Sphingomonas melonis. Catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase.(GST), cytochrome. P4501A1 (CYP1A1) activities in G. Pulex related to methomyl solution were investigated in 24 h and 96 h. ELISA method was used for test studies. CAT enzyme was decreased in Gammarus pulex that was exposed to methomyl after all exposure period (P < 0.05). CAT activities were returned to control results after bioremediation assays. GST enzyme activity was decreased depending on methomyl exposure during 24 h but increased during 4 days (P < 0.05). After 8 days of bioremediation period, GST activity increased again during 24 h while decreased during 4 days (P < 0.05). CYP1A1 activity increased in Gammarus pulex that was exposed to methomyl after all exposure period (P > 0.05). After bioremediation, statistically significant changes were not revealed in CYP1A1 activities (P > 0.05). According to the results of our study, CYP1A1, CAT, and GST activities in G. pulex sanctioned the capability of Ochrobactrum thiophenivorans and Sphingomonas melonis in methomyl bioremediation. Isolated and enriched Ochrobactrum thiophenivorans and Sphingomonas melonis that were added to 2.5 ppb concentrations of methomyl for 8 days. Each day, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), pH and dissolved oxygen parameters were monitored. At the final phase of the bioremediation step, it was determined that these bacteria have efficient methomyl bioremediation properties in a mixed corsortia at a rate of 86%. These results show that these bacteria can be used for bioremediate the receiving environments that are polluted by these kinds of insecticides.

Artificial neural networks and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems approaches to forecast the meteorological data for HVAC: The case of cities for Turkey

    Işık, Erdem; Inallı, Mustafa

Limited energy resources and increasing need for energy due to population growth seem to lead researchers to focus on these issues. Forecast of meteorological data has significant importance in design of thermal systems. In this study, forecasting of meteorological data used in thermal system design was performed for fifty cities to represent the entire Turkey. Data obtained from General Directorate of Meteorology (MGM) were modelled by artificial neural networks and adaptive-network based fuzzy inference systems. Matlab software was used for modeling and forecasting of prospective data with high sensitivity in thermal systems. Surfer and ArcGIS software were used to create humidity, temperature, solar radiation maps for Turkey. Root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error and (MAE), coefficient of variation (COV) and the coefficient of determination (R2) were used to validate the result of the proposed approaches. The results were satisfactory with respect to RMSE, MAE, COV and R2 to forecast the meteorological data. Annual solar power potential maps for Turkey were also proposed and compared with MGM results. The results of the proposed approaches are compatible with the result of the MGM. The Turkey policy maker(s) from MGM can easily use these approaches if a software is constructed.

Early Miocene seed like plant remain fossils and facies associations from the Nallıhan district (NW Turkey)

Görmüş, Muhittin; Kadioğlu, Yusuf Kağan; Varol, Baki Erdoğan; Us, Muhammed Sami

Seed like fossils recognized by their distinctive orbicular in shape are seen in the early Miocene of the Nallıhan area (NW Türkiye). We examined more than one hundred specimens and facies associations for interpreting of fossil morphology and its paleoenvironment. The fossils as dark crystallized dots on the bedding surface of clayey limestones are characterized by a thick edged lenticular shape with a smooth one side and concave another side with circular nucleus. Their internal structures have circular a few whorlings, too often radial calcitic lamellae on the upper side and a few circular coiling at the bottom side. SEM, EPMA and RAMAN data of soft nucleus, hard part, filling materials and surrounding sediments support its plant origin. The Paleogene aged Kızılbayır formation and early Miocene aged Karadoruk and Akpınar formations include the following facieses: non-channelized red sandstone and mudstone (F1), channelized “confined” reddish-beige pebbly sandstone and conglomerate (F2), medium to coarse siliciclastics (F3), mudstones interbedded with sandstones (F4), thin bedded clayey limestone bearing plant fossils (F5) medium to thick bedded limestone (F6) and rhythmic siliciclastics - clayey limestone including coal occurrences (F7). Abundant plant fossils indicate a planted shallow lake margin with low topography during the early Miocene.

Variation with graphene oxide doping of structural, optical, dielectric and thermal properties of BaCO3:ZnO nanocrystals synthesized by solgel combustion method

    Aydin, H.; Taskin, M.; Aydin, C.; Dagdelen, F.; Kaygili, O.; Bulut, N.; Orhan, A.

The results obtained from thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, optical characterization and dielectric measurements of the samples were investigated. In X-ray diffraction patterns, the presence of both BaCO3 and ZnO peaks showed that ZnO and BaCO3 nanocrystals were independently grown. Changes in the band peak position in the FTIR spectra showed that the chemical structure of Ba:Zn nanocomposites changed with the doping of graphene oxide. The optical band gap (Eg) of the samples was calculated as 3.18, 3.19, 3.2, 3.21 and 3.23 eV for BaZn, BaZn25, BaZn50, BaZn75 and BaZn100, respectively. It was determined that the dielectric constants and dielectric losses of the nanocomposites exhibited normal dielectric behavior, decreased with the frequency described in light of Maxwell–Wagner model and increased with increasing graphene oxide concentration. TG measurement showed that the mass loss in the sample decreased with increasing graphene oxide.

Accurate deep neural network model to detect cardiac arrhythmia on more than 10,000 individual subject ECG records

Yildirim, Ozal; Talo, Muhammed; Ciaccio, Edward J.; Tan, Ru San; Acharya, U Rajendra

Background and objective: Cardiac arrhythmia, which is an abnormal heart rhythm, is a common clinical problem in cardiology. Detection of arrhythmia on an extended duration electrocardiogram (ECG) is done based on initial algorithmic software screening, with final visual validation by cardiologists. It is a time consuming and subjective process. Therefore, fully automated computer-assisted detection systems with a high degree of accuracy have an essential role in this task. In this study, we proposed an effective deep neural network (DNN) model to detect different rhythm classes from a new ECG database. Methods: Our DNN model was designed for high performance on all ECG leads. The proposed model, which included both representation learning and sequence learning tasks, showed promising results on all 12-lead inputs. Convolutional layers and sub-sampling layers were used in the representation learning phase. The sequence learning part involved a long short-term memory (LSTM) unit after representation of learning layers. Results: We performed two different class scenarios, including reduced rhythms (seven rhythm types) and merged rhythms (four rhythm types) according to the records from the database. Our trained DNN model achieved 92.24% and 96.13% accuracies for the reduced and merged rhythm classes, respectively. Conclusion: Recently, deep learning algorithms have been found to be useful because of their high performance. The main challenge is the scarcity of appropriate training and testing resources because model performance is dependent on the quality and quantity of case samples. In this study, we used a new public arrhythmia database comprising more than 10,000 records. We constructed an efficient DNN model for automated detection of arrhythmia using these records.

Heartbeat type classification with optimized feature vectors

    Yıldırım, Özal; Baloglu, Ulas Baran

In this study, a feature vector optimization based method has been proposed for classification of the heartbeat types. Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals of five different heartbeat type were used for this aim. Firstly, wavelet transform (WT) method were applied on these ECG signals to generate all feature vectors. Optimizing these feature vectors is provided by performing particle swarm optimization (PSO), genetic search, best first, greedy stepwise and multi objective evoluationary algorithms on these vectors. These optimized feature vectors are later applied to the classifier inputs for performance evaluation. A comprehensive assessment was presented for the determination of optimized feature vectors for ECG signals and best-performing classifier for these optimized feature vectors was determined.

The protective effects of propolis and flunixin meglumine on feed intake, antioxidant status and histological parameters in liver and kidney tissues against excess copper in rats; [Ratlarda bakır fazlalığına karşı yem tüketimi, antioksidan durum ve karaciğer ile böbrek dokularının histolojik parametreleri üzerine propolis ve fluniksin meglümin'in koruyucu etkileri]

Tatli Seven, Pınar; Gül Baykalir, Burcu; Parlak Ak, Tuba; Seven, İsmail; Başak, Neşe; Yaman, Mine

This experiment was conducted to determine the protective effects of flunixin meglumine and propolis on feed intake, antioxidant status and histological parameters in kidney and liver tissues in rats exposed to excessive copper. In this study individually housed thirty-six male Sprague-Dawley rats were used. Animals were randomly divided into six groups; control, copper sulphate (500 mg/kg BW/day, gavage), flunixin meglumine (2.2 mg/kg BW/day, ip), propolis (100 mg/kg BW/day, gavage), copper sulphate+flunixin meglumine (500 mg/kg BW/day of copper sulphate by gavage and 2.2 mg/kg BW/day of flunixin meglumine, ip) and copper sulphate+propolis (500 mg/kg BW/day of copper sulphate and 100 mg/kg BW/day of propolis by gavage). The study demonstrated that body weight change in the copper sulphate+propolis group significantly ameliorated in comparison with copper group (P<0.01). Propolis and flunixin meglumine administration significantly decreased MDA levels in the kidney and liver tissues, and serum TNF-α levels (P<0.001). Propolis supplementation to rats who were also treated with copper significantly increased the superoxide dismutase, catalase and reduced glutathione activities (P<0.001). Flunixin meglumine and propolis treatments decreased the copper-induced degenerative and necrotic changes with the apoptotic cells in the liver and kidney tissues. In conclusion, propolis appeared to ameliorate the adverse effects on feed intake, liver and kidney tissues seeing in the copper treatment and, apparently caused by the copper toxicity, by scavenging the free radicals and increasing activity of antioxidants.

A solution approach based on beam search algorithm for disassembly line balancing problem

Mete, Süleyman; Çil, Zeynel Abidin; Ağpak, Kürşad; Özceylan, Eren; Dolgui, Alexandre

The disassembly line balancing (DLB) problem is the process of allocating a set of disassembly tasks to an ordered sequence of workstations in such a way that optimizes some performance measures (e.g., cycle time, number of stations). Since DLB problems belong to the class of NP hard, many heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithms are applied to cope with the complexity of the DLB problems in order to obtain acceptable solutions in a reasonable amount of time. In this study, a beam search (BS) based approach for the DLB problem is proposed. Minimization of number of workstations is used as the performance measure. The proposed algorithm is compared with the optimal solutions of well-known real cases and generated test problems. The results indicate that the proposed approach based on BS is a very competitive and promising tool for further researches.

APPLICATION OF INTERVAL TYPE-2 FUZZY SETS DEMATEL METHODS IN MARITIME TRANSPORTATION: THE CASE OF SHIP COLLISION

    Celik, E.; Akyuz, E.

Accident analyse in marine industry is one of the critical issues for safety practitioners to prevent loss of life. Although considerable efforts were undertaken to prevent marine accident, numerous researches revealed that marine accidents are still on-going. In order to minimize accidents in the marine transportation, this paper presents a proactive decision-making tool which is integrating Decision-Making Trail and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method with interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2FSs). As the DEMATEL enables to analyse cause and effect relationship in decision-making, the IT2FSs overcome ambiguity and vagueness of linguistic assessment of decision-makers through the DEMATEL. Thus, significant accident causal factors and their effects can be analysed on the basis of cause-effect diagram. The application of proposed approach is demonstrated with a real ship collision case. Beside its theoretical contribution, the proposed approach provides practical benefits to ship owners and operators to perceive cause and effect relationship and to avoid marine accident.

Whole rock geochemistry, Zircon U–Pb and Hf isotope systematics of the Çangaldağ Pluton: Evidences for Middle Jurassic Continental Arc Magmatism in the Central Pontides, Turkey

Çimen, Okay; Göncüoğlu, M. Cemal; Simonetti, Antonio; Sayit, Kaan

The Central Pontides (Turkey) includes several igneous complexes, which are predominantly Permo-Carboniferous and Middle Jurassic in age. The Çangaldağ Pluton is one of the largest igneous bodies located in the northern Central Pontides, whose age and tectono-magmatic evaluation is important to constrain the geological evolution of the Northern Neotethys. The pluton tectonically overlies the Çangaldağ Metamorphic Complex, which represents an arc–back-arc complex of Middle Jurassic age. The Çangaldağ Pluton consists mainly of non-metamorphic gabbroic diorite, dacite porphyry, and lesser amount of granitic rocks. Geochemically, the various rock types are akin to volcanic arc magmas displaying Th/Nb and light rare earth element/heavy rare earth element enrichments. In-situ U–Pb age results of zircons from dacite porphyry and granite samples yield ages of 161 ± 5 Ma and 170 ± 2 Ma, respectively. Corresponding in-situ average 176Hf/177Hf initial ratios are 0.28287 ± 0.00004 and 0.28213 ± 0.00002 for the dacite porphyry and granite samples, respectively. These results are consistent with derivation from a subduction-modified mantle source. Based on Hf isotope compositions, TDM model ages vary between 624 and 1512 Ma and suggest that the arc magmatism associated with the Çangaldağ Pluton may have involved partial melting of Neoproterozoic/Mesoproterozoic crustal rocks, a common feature in Gondwana-derived terranes. The geochemical, Hf isotope, and geochronological data reported here confirm the presence of a continental arc system during the Middle Jurassic in the Central Pontides, and suggests that the Çangaldağ Pluton formed during northward subduction of the Intra-Pontide branch of the Northern Neotethys.

Heavy metal and arsenic concentrations in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farmed in a dam reservoir on the Firat (Euphrates) River: Risk-based consumption advisories

Varol, Memet; Kaya, Gülderen Kurt; Alp, Alper

The concentrations of ten metals in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farmed in the Karakaya Dam Reservoir (Turkey) on the Firat River were determined. The metal concentrations in rainbow trout did not exceed the maximum permissible levels. Biomagnification factors (BMF) of ten metals were < 1, indicating that these metals were not biomagnified. The estimated daily intake (EDI) of each metal was much lower than the respective tolerable daily intake (TDI). The target hazard quotient (THQ) for individual metal and total THQ for combined metals were lower than 1, indicating no health risk for consumers due to the intake of either individual metal or combined metals. The cancer risk (CR) value for toxic inorganic As was below 10–6, indicating no carcinogenic risk. According to the calculated maximum allowable consumption rates (CRmm), an adult may safely consume 28 meals of rainbow trout from the dam reservoir per month with no adverse carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health effects. According to these results, the consumption of rainbow trout farmed in this dam reservoir is completely safe for human health.

Comparative Adsorption of Different Dyes from Aqueous Solutions onto Polymer Prepared by ROP: Kinetic, Equilibrium and Thermodynamic Studies

    Torğut, Gülben; Demirelli, Kadir

Poly(1,2-epoxy-3-phenoxy)propane was synthesized by ring-opening polymerization using Sn (Oct) 2 as a catalyst and benzyl alcohol as an initiator. Homopolymer’s epoxy type was acylated with chloroacetyl chloride firstly and then modified with the diethanol amine. The polymers were characterized by FT-IR and 1H - NMR. Dye adsorption properties of poly(2-phenoxy ethyl [bis(2-hydroxy ethyl)amino]acetate) were investigated by using bromocresol green (BCG), alizarin yellow (AY) and methylene blue (MB). Amounts of dye holding polymers at different times were calculated and plotted as a function of time. According to the removal results, all of the dyes reach its highest efficiency at 90 min. The effect of pH on adsorption of dyes was studied in the pH range of 2–11. Kinetic models known as pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order were used to analyze the mechanism of adsorption, and the results indicated an adsorption kinetic compatible with the pseudo-second order. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were utilized to explain the adsorption equilibrium, and when it was compared with each other, it was revealed that the Langmuir isotherm model was better than Freundlich isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacities of BCG, AY and MB were 52.63, 15.87 and 31.25 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, thermodynamic properties (Δ H∘, Δ S∘, Δ G∘) of modified polymer were investigated for the three dyes. According to the thermodynamic parameters, the adsorption of the dyes occurred spontaneously and was endothermic. The results of this study support that novel polymer, an inexpensive and effective adsorbent, could be used for dye removal from aqueous solutions.

Gürel Inanlı, Ayşe; Emir Çoban, Özlem; Yılmaz, Ökkeş; Özpolat, Emine; Karaton Kuzgun, Nermin

In this study, roes obtained from carp (Cyprinus carpio carpio) that were caught in Keban Dam Lake (Turkey) and cultured rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were processed as caviar, and the products were stored at + 4 C°. Lipid peroxidation and the compositions of fatty acids of these products were assessed during production and storage period. The result of fatty analyses showed that palmitic acid (16:0), stearic acid (18:0), palmitoleic acid (16:1), oleic acid (18:1), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are all essential fatty acids, were determined in the caviars of the roes obtained from rainbow trout and carp. According to results of chemical analyses, there were no significant differences in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs) between rainbow trout and carp caviars (p > 0.05), but malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were found to be statistically significant (p < 0.01). It can be concluded that caviars obtained from both rainbow trout and carp roes are rich in fatty acids and take a part in a balanced and healthy diet.

Optimal position of piezoelectric actuators for active vibration reduction of beams

    Kouider, Bendine; Polat, Alper

This paper investigates the optimal placement of piezoelectric actuators for the active vibration attenuation of beams. The governing equation of the beam is achieved by coupled first order shear deformation theory with two node element. The velocity feedback controller is designed and used to calculate the feedback gain and then apply to the beam. In order to search for the optimal placement of the piezoelectric actuators, a new optimization criterion is considered based on the use of genetic algorithm to reduce the displacement output of the beam. The proposed optimization technique has been tested for two boundary conditions configurations; clamped -free and clamped-clamped beam. Numerical examples have been provided to analyze the effectiveness of the proposed technic.
