Çelikel, Baha Engin; Yılmaz, Coşkun; Demir, Alper; Sezer, Süreyya Yonca; Ceylan, Levent; Ceylan, Tülay; Tan, Çetin

Background: The effect of inspiratory muscle training on upper limbs One Rep Maximum (1RM) in professional natural bodybuilders is still unclear. Our aim of this study is to investigate the effects of a 6 weeks inspiratory muscle training on 1RM results. Methods: This study included 14 athletes, that had participated in international bodybuilding competitions. Each athlete had been training for minimum of 5 years and at least 5 h per week. The participants were randomly divided into two groups: inspiratory muscle training (IMT) and control (CON) groups. The IMT group and CON group consisted of seven subjects. While the control group continued with the normal training regime, the IMT group additionally performed inspiratory muscle training with the resistance setting of the PowerBreathe® Classic device set to 40% of the participant’s MIP. Prior to and during the 6-week training period, the bench press 1 RM, anthropometry, pulmonary function tests, and maximal inspiratory (MIP) and expiratory (MEP) pressure measurements were obtained. A nutrition protocol developed by a qualified dietician was implemented for each athlete. Results: The mean maximal strength of the respiratory muscle training group changed by 14.39%, whereas that of the control group changed by 9.43% (p = 0.012). The changes in the mean FVC (p = 0.000), FEV1 (p = 0.001), PEF (p = 0.064), MIP (p = 0.001), and maximal expiratory pressure (p = 0.017) were greater in the IMT group. The mean circumferences of the shoulder (p = 0.004), chest (p = 0.008), arm (p = 0.004), and neck (p = 0.003) improved more in the IMT group than in the CON group. A reduction in abdominal measurement was observed in the IMT group (p = 0.039), whereas no notable discrepancy was identified in body fat percentage (p = 0.295). Conclusion: In conclusion we identified that the addition of progressive loading inspiratory muscle training for competition preparation programs in professional natural bodybuilders will further improve their respiratory function, respiratory muscle strength, maximal strength, and muscle development. This research provides valuable insights into how IMT influences bodybuilding training outcomes, potentially guiding future interventions and program designs to better support strength development and body composition in bodybuilding training contexts.

Preparation of composite supported phase change materials from inorganic-based microcapsules of cetyl alcohol and investigation of their phase change material (PCM) behaviors

Karabulut, Serap; Sekerci, Memet; Adiguzel, Ragip; Karagoz Genc, Zuhal

In this study, cetyl alcohol (CA) (CH3(CH2)15OH), which is a fatty alcohol, was microencapsulated by the coacervation method with the titanium-n-butoxide (TNBO). Firstly, at the beginning of the experimental process by thermal and structural analyses, the CA was determined as having a phase change material (PCM) property, then it was microencapsulated with TNBO. In the second step of the study, barite, boron nitride, marble powder, and fly ash were separately added to prepare a series of microencapsulated with TNBO. Lastly, structural and thermal properties of both microencapsulated PCM and composite supported microencapsulated PCMs (CSM-PCMs) have been analyzed by FTIR, DSC, TGA, and SEM devices. Surprisingly, the SEM image of CA turned from torn fiber structure into a particulate structure in the form of groundnut in the SEM images of the microencapsulated CA-Ti taken at different magnifications. After the thermal cycling test, the same analyses have been made before and after thermal cycling to compare the structural and thermal properties. It has been investigated whether to use as insulation material. It is concluded that the most suitable samples, compared with structural and thermal properties, are barite (B) and boron nitride (BN) with microencapsulated samples. The obtained results are shown that CATi-B and CATi-BN are CSM-PCMs and could be suggested in terms of thermal energy storage in buildings as promising PCMs.

Effects of Cr and W in TiMoNb Refractory High Entropy Alloys

Simsek, Tuncay; Kurtulus, Altug; Avar, Baris; Güler, Seval Hale; Dag, İlker Emin; Chattopadhyay, Arun K.

This study focuses on synthesizing and characterizing mechanically alloyed refractory high entropy alloys (RHEA) containing TiMoNb, Cr, W, and Cr + W. Analytical techniques including XRD, SEM, EDX, DTA, and TGA were employed to explore the influence of Cr and W on the alloys' structure, morphology, and thermal stability towards oxidation. XRD analysis confirmed the formation of a single-phase bcc solid solution in TiMoNbCr, TiMoNbW, and TiMoNbCrW alloys. Crystallite size decreased as milling progressed, yielding average sizes of approximately 7.2 nm, 7.4 nm, and 9.7 nm, with lattice strains of 1.143%, 1.148%, and 1.15%, respectively. Both experimental and calculated values of lattice parameters converged to around 3.1685 ± 0.002 and 3.1791 ± 0.010 Å for all three alloys. The synergy of Cr and W in TiMoNb was observed for the first time, impacting dislocation density, hardness, and oxidation stability. TiMoNbCrW exhibited reduced dislocation density and the highest hardness (502 HV). TGA indicated enhanced oxidation resistance up to 400 °C for TiMoNbCrW compared to the most vulnerable TiMoNbCr alloy.

Changes in quality characteristics and inactivation of Salmonella in cake, including oleogel used as a fat replacer, baked with two different methods

Ozdemir-Orhan, Necla; Eroglu, Zeynep; Omac, Basri

This is the first study to assess the impact of substitution of shortening (50%) with sunflower-beeswax oleogel in cake formulations on the inactivation kinetics of Salmonella spp. and the quality attributes of cakes baked in conventional (CO) and microwave (MWO) ovens. Four distinct cake samples were examined in the study: Cake samples containing oleogel prepared in two different ovens (Oleo-Cake-CO and Oleo-Cake-MWO) and control cake samples baked in two different ovens (Cont-Cake-CO and Cont-Cake-MWO). The control-batter and oleogel-batter demonstrated shear thinning behavior (pseudoplastic, n < 1), with a good fit to the Power Law model, but viscosity and viscoelastic moduli decreased when the oleogel was used in place of shortening in cake recipes. In addition, the Cont-Cake-MWO had the greatest special volume value (2.31 ± 0.04 mL/g), whereas the Oleo-Cake-CO had the lowest (1.65 ± 0.02 mL/g) (p < 0.05). Furthermore, compared to the samples baked with CO, lower water activity and moisture values (p < 0.05) were observed in the samples baked in MWO due to their higher cooking loss values (p < 0.05). In all baking techniques, the addition of oleogel to the cake formula, used as a fat substitute, resulted in higher values for cohesiveness, hardness, springiness, and chewiness (p < 0.05). As a result, the inactivation of Salmonella in cakes slightly reduced with using oleogel as a fat substitute (p > 0.05), whereas it affected some quality properties of cakes baked with both heat treatments.

Investigation on application of plate-tube evaporative condensating technology for data centres in the northwest of China

Wu, Xueyuan; Shao, Shuangquan; Akkurt, Nevzat

The rapid development of data center leads to a rapid increase in energy consumption. In this paper, the plate and tube evaporative condenser is proposed for the water-cooled chiller and the data center cooling system to improve the energy efficiency in hot and dry summer and avoid icing in cold winter. The chiller can operate in the wet mode for compressor refrigeration and the dry mode for free cooling with the coefficient of performance (COP) of 5.2 in wet mode and up to 33.3 in dry mode. Furthermore, the system is applied in a data center in Ulumiqi, which is located in the dry and cold region and its ambient air temperature can vary from −32 °C to 45 °C throughout the year. The actual operation results show that the power usage effectiveness (PUE) value of the whole data centre is 1.349 in June, 1.229 in December, and 1.320 as the annual average, which is stable and efficient for five consecutive years. These results ensure the proposed system is an important technical solution for energy saving and emission reduction in data centres in cold regions.

    Recent trends in evaporation techniques

Icier, Filiz; Doner, Deniz; Cokgezme, Omer Faruk; Sabanci, Serdal; Cevik, Mutlu

Increasing energy costs of the food industry and the necessity to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases orient the researchers to find alternative solutions to increase energy efficiency, and to decrease waste and environmental damage. Hence, the use of novel technologies comes to the fore. Since volumetric heating could be provided by Ohmic and microwave heating methods, a heating medium is not required. Thus it is possible to reduce undesirable changes in quality attributes by eliminating contact with hot surfaces and providing rapid heating. The negative effects on the environment could also be reduced owing to both utilization of efficient energy for the heating process and the elimination of wastewater. Alternative nonthermal methods including ultrasound, membrane filtration, pulsed electric field, and electroplasmolysis techniques could also be applied. In this chapter, recent studies on the evaporation techniques, regarding their system setups, effects on the quality characteristics, and performance evaluations are reviewed.

    Aksakal, B.; Karadogan, S.A.; Aslan, N.; Fidan, F.; Yilmazer, Y.; Sezek, S.

Zinc (Zn) and its alloys exhibit great potential for utilization in biodegradable bone implants. Zn-1Cu biodegradable alloy was produced and were cold rolled at two different deformation rates of 47 and 61%. The samples have been bioceramic coated with the sol–gel method and microstructure-mechanical property changes, corrosion behavior and biocompatibility of the samples were investigated. They were characterized by Optical, SEM, XRD and wettability analysis. The rolled samples showed a significant increase in hardness when compared to the non-rolled samples. The unrolled and 47% rolled samples showed better corrosion resistance compared to 61% rolled samples. Antibacterial effects of the base and sol–gel-coated groups showed higher cell viability ratios than the uncoated groups. Cell viability increased significantly in 47% of the rolled samples after 24, 48, and 72 h, however decreased by up to 70% in 61% of the rolled samples. Graphical abstract: (Figure presented.).

Stress analysis of the contact problem in a functionally graded layer loaded with a distributed load and two rigid circular punches resting on an elastic two quarter planes

    Kaya, Fatih; Polat, Alper

In this study, the solution of the contact problem in a functionally graded (FG) layer resting on elastic two quarter planes was done using the finite element method (FEM). The contact problem consists of two rigid circular punches loaded FG and two elastic quarter planes. P and Q loads are transmitted to the FG layer by two rigid circular punches. All surfaces in the problem were considered as frictionless and the weight effect is also taken into account. The two-dimensional model of the contact problem was created with the ANSYS package program based on FEM and the stress analyzes were performed. All operations of quarter planes and circular punches are done with standard ANSYS menus. However, defining the material properties of the FG layer and dividing into meshes in finite elements cannot be done with standard menus. For this reason, a special macro was added to the program in order to define the material properties of the FG layer and to perform the mesh division, and the necessary parameters were applied to the layer by this macro. In the study, the effects of external load, stiffness parameter (βh), density parameter (γh) and contact stresses of distributed load change, normal stresses, and stresses along the depth were investigated.

Evaluating the metallographic properties and performance of heat transfer by natural convection of graphene-coated glass used for heating

    Kahraman, Gökhan; Taşgın, Yahya

In this study, a decorative electric heater was manufactured to reduce carbon emissions related to residential and office heating, and this heater was metallographically evaluated. In addition, the heating performance of the manufactured plate was investigated by examining its heat transfer capacity by natural convection. For this purpose, the surface of the tempered glass plate was coated with graphene by spraying to improve its electrical and heat conduction properties. Copper strips were attached to both sides of the plate to allow for an electric current. The plate was connected to mains electricity, and its change in surface temperature over time was measured. Using the measured temperature values, the heat transfer rate by natural convection on the plate surface was calculated. As a result of the calculations, it was determined that the graphene-coated tempered glass plate reached a heating performance of 40 watts after 2400 s of electrical energy supply. This value can be increased by increasing the heat transfer surface area. This study, taking advantage of the excellent thermophysical properties of graphene, will contribute to other studies conducted in this field.

An Estimation Proposal for Engineering Properties of Modified Concrete by using Standalone and Hybrid GRELM

Cemalgil, Selim; Onat, Onur; Aruntaş, Hüseyin Yılmaz

The presented study pertains to an attempt to propose a novel prediction model to predict the flexural and compressive strengths of concrete modulated using steel fiber (SFb) and silica fume (SF). A completed experimental investigation is adopted for the current study, and a research plan is employed. Three different superplasticizers amount (SP), different SF replacement ratios, and a constant amount of SFb were used by the weight of cement to meet the C25 target strength. A sum of 16 distinct mixtures designed by changing SP and SF ratios were developed. Furthermore, SFb was added at a fixed rate of 65 kg/m3 to all planned concrete mixes. In addition, SFb was used to create a 16-mix design. Finally, a total of 32 distinct mix designs were created. Produced, hardened specimens were exposed to two different curing conditions. This research uses the mechanical characteristics of concrete treated with SF, SP, and SFb to estimate by conducting standalone and hybridized generalized extreme learning machine (GRELM) algorithms based on available experimental data in terms of the metaheuristic aspects of this work. With continuous input data, four separate data sets were constructed. Compressive strength and flexural strength were estimated separately. With the aid of the Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithms, binary and ternary hybrid approaches were developed and tested on the data. Four distinct estimation models were suggested. Two quality metrics were used to evaluate the estimation performance: Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and correlation of determination (R2). The estimation results showed that the hybridized GRELM-PSO-GWO estimation model that was built for prediction was relatively successful in all sets.

Physical-Mechanical and Electrical Resistivity Properties of Cementitious Mortars Containing Fe3O4-MWCNTs Nanocomposite

Selen, Veyis; Guler, Omer; Nodehi, Mehrab; Sarı, Ahmet; Yaras, Ali; Gencel, Osman; Gholampour, Aliakbar; Ozbakkaloglu, Togay

Recent growth in materials science and engineering technologies has pushed the construction industry to engage in new applications, such as the manufacturing of smart and electrically conductive products. Such novel uses of conductive construction materials would potentially allow their use in conjunction with various fields, such as those referred to as “Industry 4.0.” The following study uses iron oxide (Fe3O4)-multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) nanocomposites synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and incorporated into the cementitious mortars as a substitute for sand at 1, 2, and 3% ratios to enhance the electrical conductivity. Results reveal that the electrical resistivity of cementitious composites decreases (due to the increase in electrical conductivity) from 208.3 to 61.6 Ω·m with both the Fe3O4-MWCNTs nanocomposites ratio and the increasing voltage. The lowest compressive strengths at 7 and 28 days are 12.6 and 17.4 MPa for specimens with 3% Fe3O4-MWCNTs and meet the standards that comply with most applications. On the other hand, the highest porosity was reached at 26.8% with a Fe3O4-MWCNTs rate of 3%. This increase in porosity caused a decrease in both the dry unit weight and ultrasonic pulse velocity (from 5156 to 4361 m/s). Further, it is found that the incorporation of Fe3O4-MWCNT nanocomposites can have a negative effect on the hardening process of mortars, leading to localized air cavities and an inhomogeneous development of cementing products. Nonetheless, the improvement of the electrical conductivity of the samples without significantly compromising their physico-mechanical properties will allow their use in various fields, such as deicing applications with low-voltage electric current.

A novel radial basis Bayesian regularization deep neural network for the Maxwell nanofluid applied on the Buongiorno model

Sabir, Zulqurnain; Akkurt, Nevzat; Ben Said, Salem

The aim of this work is to provide the numerical solutions of the fluid model by using the stochastic computing paradigms. The linear/exponential stretching sheets on magneto-rotating flow based on the Maxwell nanofluid have been provided using the Buongiorno model with the impacts of uneven heat source/sink, varying thermal conductivity and reactive species. The solutions of this transformed ordinary differential exponential stretching sheet model have been presented using a novel ‘radial basis’ (RB) activation function together with the Bayesian regularization deep neural network (BRDNN), i.e., RB-BRDNN. The deep neural network is presented into two hidden layers, while thirteen and twenty-five numbers of neurons have been used in the first and second layer. A reference dataset is proposed using the Runge-Kutta scheme for the model. The correctness of the stochastic RB-BRDNN procedure is examined through the comparison of proposed and database results, whereas minimal absolute error values provide the accuracy of the scheme. The reliability and competence of the computing RB-BRDNN solver is authenticated using the state transitions, correlation, regression, and error histograms.

Ks estimates using macroscopic capillary length estimated from soil hydraulic shape coefficients and Haverkamp infiltration model

Yilmaz, Deniz; Sağlam, Mustafa; İç, Serkan; Stewart, Ryan D.; Lassabatere, Laurent

In this study, we developed a new general approach to estimate the macroscopic capillary length (λc) using different hydraulic function models and related shape parameters, along with the Haverkamp infiltration model constant. We next applied this new approach to the van Genuchten model coupled with a Burdine condition (vGB) to estimate λc. Then, we applied the new λc computation to three different methods for estimating saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks), and analyzed two sets of constant infiltration data: 1) an analytically generated Beerkan-type dataset and 2) constant head and Beerkan-type infiltration tests performed at the Ambarköprü Experimental Station of Blacksea Agricultural Research Institute in Samsun, Turkey. Our new approach provided accurate Ks estimates when applied to the analytical Beerkan infiltration data. The highest error was observed for a silt soil, with 30 % error for one formulation versus <15 % for the others. For synthetic coarse-textured soils such loamy sand and sandy loam, the error was <10 %. For the field data and Beerkan-type experiments, the new approach gave consistent estimates of Ks regardless of analytical interpretation. However, ANOVA analysis revealed that Ks varied between different infiltration test types, with constant head infiltrometry with 5 cm of applied water head having greater Ks values than the Beerkan tests (p < 0.05). Estimated Ks values also differed between land use types (p < 0.01), with a maize field having significantly greater Ks compared to a soybean field. Overall, we conclude that the proposed approach represents an efficient and appropriate method for characterizing point-scale saturated hydraulic conductivity, so long as experimental artifacts such as ring insertion deep and preferential flows are considered.

Extracting low dimensional representations from large size whole slide images using deep convolutional autoencoders

    Çelik, Yusuf; Karabatak, Murat

Background and objective: Artificial intelligence-based analysis of medical images has recently become a trendy field of study. The most significant effect on these systems to produce reliable and high-performance results is the amount of accessed data. Although whole-slide images (WSI), one of the current imaging techniques used in histopathology, storage costs are very expensive. Therefore, low-dimensional visuals representing of WSIs is an essential field of study. Methods: In this study, deep auto-encoder-based models are designed to create low dimensional representations for WSI. The size reduction was performed for the input images in different sizes, at the ratios of 1: 3, 1: 6, and 1: 12, respectively. Results: Similarity index measure values were obtained as high as 0.957 and 0.938, respectively, using 128 × 128 × 3 dimensional patches in the size reduction process of 1: 3 and 1:12 on test WSI. Conclusion: The proposed model has a structure that can be applied in compression of WSIs and secure data transfer. By using these representations, both storage costs and the high-level hardware costs required by deep learning algorithms can be significantly reduced.

Investigation of the geometry effect on air-demand ratio in conduits with a sluice gate

Aydin, Alp Bugra; Baylar, Ahmet; Ozkan, Fahri; Tuna, Muhammed Cihat; Ozturk, Mualla

Gated conduits involve high-velocity air-water flow. When studies on gated conduits are examined, it is determined that the air-demand ratio changes according to the hydraulic and geometric parameters. However, no study has investigated the effect of the cross-sectional geometry of high-head conduits with a sluice gate on the air-demand ratio. In this study, the effect of conduit cross-sectional geometry on the air-demand ratio is examined. Results indicate that a conduit's cross-sectional geometry has an important effect on the air-demand ratio, especially at 10% and 15% gate opening rates. It is seen that the effect of the conduit geometry on the air-demand ratio decreases at 20%, and for greater gate opening rates. Moreover, a formula for estimated the air-demand ratio is presented, relating the air-demand ratio to the gate opening rate, Froude number, hydraulic radius and conduit length.

Synthesis and characterization of MgO-doped PHA bio-composites

    Aydın, Handan

In this study, a highly useable MgO doped polymer composite of Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), which is an alternative to conventional plastics and an environmentally friendly plastic material due to its biodegradability, was investigated. PHA-MgO composites were obtained by stirring in a suitable solution for a long time with the help of a homogenizer. Then, MgO was added and the changes in Poly Hydroxy Alkonate (PHA) polymer composites were investigated according to the changing MgO ratio. Composites were prepared by adding MgO at different ratios of 1 %, 5 %, 10 % and 15 % into PHA. The structural results of the prepared samples were investigated by using XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). In addition, the thermal properties of the composites were investigated by DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) and TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis). Furthermore, the optical properties of PHA-MgO composites were determined by UV-VIS spectrometry. Finally, since PHA polymer exhibits shape memory properties, the shape memory properties of the composites were also investigated.
