High-entropy rare-earth tungstate (PrEuYLaSm)2(WO4)3: Synthesis, physical, structural evolution and shielding properties

Durmus, Hasan; Özkul, İskender; Güler, Ömer; Güler, Seval Hale; Baykal, Duygu Sen; ALMisned, Ghada; Tekin, H.O.

In this study, a novel high-entropy rare-earth tungstate, (PrEuYLaSm)2(WO4)3, was synthesized by high-energy ball milling followed by calcination, and its structural, microstructural, thermal, gamma-ray, and neutron shielding properties were systematically investigated. X-ray diffraction results revealed that ball milling induced partial amorphization of the initial oxide mixture, while calcination at 1100 °C promoted the formation of a single-phase monoclinic A2W3O12-type structure without detectable secondary phases. SEM-EDS mapping showed the homogeneous distribution of Pr, Eu, Y, La, Sm, W, and O throughout the synthesized material. Differential thermal analysis showed sequential desorption, crystallization, and structural ordering processes, together with the absence of sharp decomposition up to 1100 °C, indicating good thermal stability. Radiation shielding evaluation demonstrated that the synthesized high-entropy tungstate exhibited strong gamma-ray attenuation performance, with high mass attenuation coefficient values, low half-value layer values, and stable effective atomic number behaviour over a wide photon energy range. Although some individual oxides showed superior performance at specific energies, the high-entropy composition provided a more balanced shielding response overall. In neutron shielding, the material showed competitive fast neutron removal capability among oxide systems. It can be concluded that the multifunctional potential of (PrEuYLaSm)2(WO4)3 for competitive high-temperature and radiation shielding applications.

Identification and Quantification of Fatty Acid Profile of Muscle and Gametes in Threatened Abant Trout (Salmo abanticus) from Wild

Özçiçek, Esin; Kocabaş, Filiz Kutluyer; Kocabaş, Mehmet; Yilmaz, Ökkeş

Abstract: As an important challenge restricting hatchery production, gamete quality and subsequent larvae and juvenile are influenced by broodstock nutritional status (i.e., protein, essential amino acids, fatty acid profile and minerals). Hence, the fatty acid (FA) profiles of muscle and gametes in threatened Abant trout (Salmo abanticus) from wild was elucidated and quantitated using the gas chromatography. Our results indicated that the saturated fatty acids (SFAs) in muscle and sperm (38.00 and 60.98%) of S. abanticus occurred in higher quantities than unsaturated fatty acids. The egg of S. abanticus in the wild is characterized by high (mostly n-6 HUFA, 33.59%). Tricosanoic acid (C23:0) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6 n-3) were not determined in sperm of S. abanticus. Overall, the current study provides FA composition in the reproduction cells and muscle of mature S. abanticus and the gametes and muscle had similar general FA profiles with the dominance of C18:1 n-9 (Oleic acid), C16:0 (Palmitic acid), C4:0 (Butyric acid), C18:2 n-6 (Linoleic acid, LA) and C20:5 n-3 (Eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA).

Sufi thought in the diwan of the French Christian poet Charles Vernay

    Kayaokay, İlyas

This article examines how the French Christian poet Charles Vernay (1842–1866) engaged with Ottoman Sufi poetic discourse in his Divan-ı Verne (1858), a collection of poems written in Ottoman Turkish and Persian. While openly preserving his Christian identity, Vernay frequently employs key Sufi concepts, including ‘tevhid’ (divine unity), ‘aşk-ı hakiki’ (mystical love), ‘irfan’ (gnosis), ‘hakikat’ (truth) and the ‘tarik’ (spiritual path). Through a close textual analysis of selected poems, this study explores the relationship between Vernay’s Christian identity and the Sufi vocabulary that shapes his poetic imagination. The findings demonstrate that Vernay’s use of Sufi terminology extends beyond conventional imitation of classical Ottoman poetry. He employs these concepts to articulate his own spiritual worldview while simultaneously referring to the Bible, Jesus Christ and the doctrine of the Trinity. Although Vernay adopts the metaphysical language of Ottoman Sufism, he does not reproduce its Prophet Muhammad-centred framework. Instead, he reinterprets Sufi concepts within a Christian religious horizon and constructs a spiritual discourse shaped by unity, love, truth and faith. Divan-ı Verne thus reveals how Ottoman Sufi poetic language could be appropriated across religious boundaries and provides new insight into intercultural literary exchange in the nineteenth-century Ottoman world.

Impact of Postharvest Oxalic Acid Treatments on Quality Properties and Biochemical Composition of Medlar (Mespilus germanica L.) Fruit

Çolak, Ayşen Melda; Gündoğdu, Özlem; Aglar, Erdal; Sezgin, Nevzat; Orman, Erdal; Gundogdu, Muttalip

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of oxalic acid (OA) applications at different concentrations on the quality traits and biochemical components of medlar (Mespilus germanica L.) fruit. Fruits harvested in Bolu province in 2024 were subjected to control (0) and 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 mM OA applications and stored at 4°C and 90% ± 5% relative humidity for 45 days. Samples were taken from the fruits at certain intervals (0, 15, 30, and 45 days) and analyzed. Specifically, 1.0 and 1.5 mM OA applications significantly reduced fruit weight loss and decay rates. OA also inhibited increases in fruit respiration rate and pH and slowed the decline in total acidity, soluble solids content (SSC), vitamin C, phenolic compounds, and organic acids. Malic, citric, succinic, tartaric, and fumaric acids, vitamin C, and important phenolic compounds (chlorogenic acid, gallic acid, quercetin, catechin) were protected by OA applications, and this protection was most pronounced at 1.5 mM OA dose. The correlation analyses revealed significant relationships between quality parameters and biochemical contents. The weight loss and decay rate were negatively correlated with bioactive compounds such as gallic acid and ascorbic acid, indicating that quality deterioration progressed in parallel with the decrease in nutrient content. A strong positive correlation was found between titratable acidity and malic and citric acids. In principal component analysis (PCA), malic and citric acids were prominent in the early storage period, while weight loss, decay, and increased respiration became dominant in the late storage period. Phenolic compounds decreased significantly with storage time, and antioxidant capacity decreased. Heat map analysis visually supported the increase in spoilage parameters with the decrease in ascorbic acid and phenolic compounds. OA applications maintained the quality of medlar fruit and increased biochemical stability, extending postharvest life. 1.5 mM OA, in particular, stands out as an effective postharvest preservation method. These results demonstrate that OA offers significant potential for increasing the commercial value of perishable fruits like medlar and for developing preservation technologies.

Numerical analysis of PCM integrated in solar dryers for thermal efficiency

Bakır Gür, Eda; Işık, Erdem; Uçar, Aynur

Solar dryers using phase change materials buffer heat, yet the combined influence of airflow regime and PCM placement on melting remains underexplored. A controlled like-for-like study fixed geometry and PCM properties while varying placement and operating conditions. A 3D transient CFD model simulated a forced-convection dryer with RT28HC over Re = 3000–9000 and inlet temperatures Ti = 50–60 °C. Raising either Re or Ti shortened melt time, and three-wall coverage melted faster and more uniformly than a rear-wall-only layout. For three walls, melt time dropped from 13 h (50 °C, Re = 3000) to 7 h (60 °C, Re = 9000) (−46 %) for the rear wall it fell from 19 h to 11 h (−42 %). A 10 °C increase in Ti reduced overall melt time by 4 h across Re. Practically, three wall PCM with Re ≥ 6000 at Ti = 60 °C achieved reliably 7–9 h melting, enabling late afternoon heat release without auxiliary heating.

Engineering Superior Soft Magnetic Properties Through FeCo/Cr and FeCo/Fe Nanocrystalline Architectures

    Yüzüak, Gizem Durak

Soft magnetic materials are integral to various technologies, including high-frequency transformers, spintronic devices, and magnetic sensors, because of their low coercivity (HC) and high magnetization. This study investigates nanocrystalline Fe70Co30(100 nm)/Cr(2-10 nm) and Fe70Co30(100 nm)/Fe(2-10 nm) thin films, deposited via magnetron sputtering. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that Fe70Co30 films without buffer layers crystallize in a body-centered cubic phase. The Cr and Fe buffer layers enhance it by minimizing lattice mismatch and promoting a uniform crystalline growth of the Fe70Co30 layer. The most significant particle size variations observed were approximately 24% for the Cr buffer and 31% for the Fe buffer. Microstructural characterization using atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy identified nanograins with an average size of 30–80 nm. Magnetic characterization with a vibrating sample magnetometer showed a marked reduction in HC. Additionally, the remanence-to-saturation magnetization ratio remains nearly constant at 0.95 across all Fe-buffered films, whereas it increases from 0.80 to 0.92 in Cr-buffered films as the Cr thickness increases. The results highlight the importance of buffer layer engineering in enhancing the microstructural and magnetic properties of FeCo thin films, thereby increasing their suitability for advanced magnetic technologies.

Giant İnhabitants of the Ottoman Empire: Elephants; [Osmanlı Devleti’nin Dev Sakinleri: Filler]

    Altı, Aziz

Elephants have always been a focus of attention for humanity, thanks to both their physical structure and their potential strength. This attractive effect of elephants also made itself felt in the Ottoman Empire, and elephants took their place in Ottoman property from the early periods of the state. The elephants sent from the “Eastern” world to the Ottoman sultans within the scope of diplomatic relations now became permanent residents of the state. In fact, within the Ottoman Empire, positions such as chief elephant keeper and filbân (elephant caretaker) were created to care for and train elephants. The filbâns, whose numbers changed from time to time, worked under Mîrâhûr in the Ottoman state organization. The filbâns, who were paid salaries as ulufe, also routinely received allowances for the needs of the elephants. Shelters were provided for elephants in suitable areas in Istanbul. Elephants were not only found in Istanbul, but also in provincial cities, especially in Edirne. Elephants, who contributed to the authority and charismatic personality of the Sultan, were kept in the Ottoman Empire to serve different purposes. As a matter of fact, elephants appeared as important figures in the reception of ambassadors, festivals, wars and diplomatic relations between states. In this context, the subjects of this study were the actions that took place in the social, military and political life of the Ottoman Empire.

Biogenic amine profiling of fruit wines by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection after OPA derivatisation: effect of fruit type

Tok, Fırat; Çetin, Burcu; Karaca Sanyürek, Nesrin

This study aimed to characterise the biogenic amine (BA) profiles of fruit wines produced from different raw materials and to investigate their association with pH and fruit type. Ten commercially available fruit wines, including pomegranate, black mulberry, sour cherry, strawberry, melon, blackberry, and blueberry, were analysed using HPLC with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD) following pre-column derivatisation with o-phthalaldehyde. Putrescine, tyramine (TYR), and histamine were identified as the predominant amines, with total BA concentrations ranging from 11.62 to 53.96 mg/L depending on the fruit type. The pH values of the wines (3.28-3.60) were inversely related to acidity and showed a strong positive correlation with total BA content (r = 0.97, p < .001). Among the detected compounds, TYR exhibited the highest sensitivity to pH variation. Multivariate analysis using principal component analysis clearly differentiated the samples into two distinct groups: low pH-low BA wines (pomegranate and blueberry) and high pH-high BA wines (blackberry and strawberry). The HPLC-FLD method demonstrated excellent analytical performance, with high chromatographic stability (retention time RSD < 1%) and reliable compound identification. Overall, the results indicate that BA formation in fruit wines is closely associated with both pH and fruit type, reflecting the combined effects of raw material composition and fermentation conditions. These findings provide valuable insights into the biochemical characterisation, quality assessment, and safety evaluation of fruit wines in oenological applications.

Validation and adaptation of a Turkish version of the dietarian identity questionnaire

Gumus, Damla; Macit, Arife; Demirci, Senol; Kizil, Mevlude

Dietarian identity reflects an individual’s cognitive, emotional, and behavioral orientation toward the consumption or avoidance of animal-based foods, including red meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy. This study aimed to adapt and validate the Dietarian Identity Questionnaire (DIQ) for Turkish-speaking populations by establishing its cultural and linguistic suitability and examining dietarian identity profiles among different dietary patterns. The DIQ was adapted into Turkish and administered via a webbased survey to 487 Turkish-speaking adults (Mean age=28.9±10.7 years; 34.7% male, 64.1% female, and 1.2% non-binary). Participants were categorized as omnivores, vegetarians, or vegans based on self-reported dietary exclusions. Structural validity was assessed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis, while internal consistency, composite reliability, and convergent and discriminant validity were evaluated through Cronbach’s alpha and average variance extracted. Group differences across dietary identity profiles were examined using ANOVA, and interrelationships among the DIQ-Turkish (DIQ-T) subscales were explored through Pearson correlation analysis. The results indicated that the eight-factor DIQ-T demonstrated a strong model fit (χ2 (465) =1841.45, p<0.001, CFI=0.924, TLI=0.914, RMSEA=0.078, SRMR=0.050), confirming its structural validity. Reliability analysis indicated high internal consistency across all subscales, and significant differences were observed between omnivores and vegan/vegetarian groups across multiple dimensions (p<0.001), highlighting distinct psychological and motivational patterns associated with dietarian identity. These findings support DIQ-T as a valid and reliable instrument for assessing dietarian identity, providing a valuable tool for researchers and health professionals investigating dietary behaviors and their potential implications for public health and nutrition interventions.

Evaluation of aerobic and anaerobic capacity in pubertal karate athletes: performance analysis and development strategies

Korkmaz, Kübranur; Aygören, Caner; Düzova, Halil

Background: This study investigated the effects of gender’s foot arch structure (normal arch vs. pes planus) on aerobic and anaerobic performance in pubertal karate athletes. Method: Children with chronic cardiovascular and musculoskeletal diseases were excluded from the study. Participants included boys with normal foot arches (B-nfa, n = 7), boys with pes planus (B-pp, n = 11), girls with normal foot arches (G-nfa, n = 16), and girls with pes planus (G-pp, n = 11). Aerobic capacity was evaluated using the 6-Minute Walk Test, while anaerobic performance was assessed through the Vertical Jump Test and sprint tests (10 m and 30 m). The height of the foot arch was measured using the Navicular Drop test. Nonparametric data were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test and Dunn's post-hoc test to identify significant differences. Parametric data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test. Pearson's test was used for parametric correlation, while Spearman's test was used for nonparametric correlation. The significance threshold was set at p < 0.05. Results: Individuals in the G-nfa group exhibited higher anaerobic power than those in the G-pp group (p = 0.0452). There was a strong negative correlation between arch pes planus and Spear equations (r = 0.63, p = 0.0004). B-nfa participants performed faster than both B-pp (p = 0.0015) and G-pp (p = 0.0015). The G-nfa completed the 10 m sprint test faster than both B-pp and G-pp (p = 0.0052). B-nfa outperformed G-pp in the 30 m sprint (p = 0.036) and covered greater distances in the six-minute walk test compared to B-pp (p = 0.034) and G-pp (p = 0.002). Conclusion: In this study, we concluded that flat feet do not negatively affect the development of aerobic capacity in prepubertal children undergoing professional karate training. Still, they may significantly impact the growth of anaerobic power.

Exogenous methyl jasmonate delays quality loss and maintains bioactive compounds in quince during long-term storage

Hanci, Mehmet Utku; Ozturk, Ahmet; Aglar, Erdal; Olcer, Mehmet Ali; Ozturk, Burhan

Quince (Cydonia oblonga Mill.) is a climacteric fruit species that, despite its high nutritional value and rich phenolic composition, is prone to quality changes during postharvest handling. However, under appropriate storage conditions it can be maintained at acceptable quality for several months. This study aimed to assess the effects of exogenous methyl jasmonate (MeJA) treatments on quality attributes, and phenolic metabolism of quince fruit during cold storage. Fruits were treated with 0 (control), 0.5, and 1.0 mM MeJA and stored at 0 ± 1 °C with 90 ± 5% relative humidity for 120 days. Analyses were conducted at 30-day intervals, including physiological, phytochemical, and antioxidant activity, as well as individual phenolic compounds. During cold storage, fruits treated with 1.0 mM methyl jasmonate (MeJA) exhibited lower weight loss and respiration rate. Higher fruit firmness was also observed in MeJA-treated fruits. At the end of storage, MeJA-treated fruits showed higher vitamin C content and titratable acidity, but lower soluble solids content than the control fruits. Similarly, at 60 and 90 days of storage, fruits treated with 1.0 mM MeJA were found to contain higher levels of total phenolics, total flavonoids, and antioxidant activity. Among the phenolic acids identified in quince fruit, chlorogenic acid and 4-aminobenzoic acid were present at higher concentrations compared to the other phenolic compounds. At the end of the storage, MeJA-treated fruits generally exhibited a slower decline in phenolic acids compared to the control, indicating a protective effect of the treatment on phenolic stability. As a result, methyl jasmonate applications were identified as an effective strategy for reducing post-harvest quality losses and preserving bioactive compounds in quince fruit. Specifically, the 1.0 mM MeJA application showed the strongest protective effect on quality parameters. These findings indicate that MeJA is a commercially viable method for extending shelf life and preserving quality in quince fruit.

Negative Outcome Expectation as a Barrier for Knowledge Sharing: Conceptualisation and Measurement Development

    Uyan, Umut

Knowledge sharing has become the critical success factor for effective knowledge management since it bridges the gap between knowledge creation and utilisation. So far, socio-psychological factors have yet to attract the attention of scholars despite numerous barriers impeding the flow of knowledge. The current study is, therefore, designed to develop a self-reporting measurement instrument that uncovers hidden sharing barriers triggered by negative outcome expectations. To test the psychometric properties of the newly designed instrument, a stepwise procedure was applied. The findings indicate that the instrument aimed at developing is a multidimensional construct consisting of 13 items and four dimensions (assumption of being ignored, assumption of not meeting expectations, assumption of being non-sense and assumption of conflict avoidance). The results of this study provide preliminary evidence for the reliability and validity of the 13-item negative outcome expectation scales as a measure of hidden assumptions towards knowledge sharing.

Effectiveness of flipped classroom model in distance education: An experimental study in Turkish language course

Aslan, Seda Aktı; Turgut, Yigit Emrah; Ünlü, Gökhan; Allison, Jordan

This study investigates the impact of the Flipped Classroom Model (FCM) on university students’ learning achievement, self-directed learning skills (SLS), and course interaction within the context of live online classes (LOC). Employing a 14-week quasi-experimental design, the research involved an experimental group (n = 34) exposed to the FCM and a control group (n = 25) taught through traditional methods. Pre-tests indicated that the groups were not statistically different at baseline. Post-intervention analyses revealed no statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of immediate learning achievement or course interaction. However, results from a delayed post-test indicated that students in the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher retention of learning content compared to their counterparts. No significant improvements were observed in self-directed learning skills, suggesting that the FCM, as implemented, may not effectively foster such competencies across all learners. Furthermore, the model did not significantly enhance student interaction in the online classroom environment. These findings suggest that while the FCM may support long-term retention, its overall impact on achievement, interaction, and the development of SLS in LOC settings is limited and may be moderated by students’ existing self-regulatory capacities.

FedMedIDS: A non-IID-resilient federated DCNN framework for securing IoMT and IoHT devices

    Gencer, Burak; Dogan, Gurkan

The diversity of devices in the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) and Internet of Health Things (IoHT) networks creates significant security vulnerabilities against cyberattacks. Traditional centralized machine learning approaches, however, are not always suitable for these environments due to data privacy regulations. In this study, a new Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) architecture is proposed for attack detection in IoMT/IoHT networks. The proposed architecture integrates the Residual Squeeze-and-Excitation (RSE) Block, the Squeeze-and-Excitation attention mechanism (SEM), and a one-dimensional multi-pooling approach. The model was evaluated within a federated learning (FL) framework called Federated Medical Intrusion Detection System (FedMedIDS), which preserves data privacy and demonstrates robustness in heterogeneous client scenarios. Four different training strategies—Centralized, FedAvg, FedProx, and Local-Only—were adopted for the evaluations. The proposed model and existing models were tested on the Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity – Internet of Medical Things 2024 (CICIoMT2024) and Edith Cowan University – Internet of Health Things (ECU-IoHT) datasets and compared with current deep learning models. The DCNN proposed for the CICIoMT2024 dataset and a Dirichlet distribution with α = 1.0 achieved F1 scores of up to 99.92% under FedAvg and 94.64% under FedProx with α = 0.5. At α = 0.05, the highest level of heterogeneity, it outperformed the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) by as much as 27%. On the ECU-IoHT dataset, F1 scores of up to 89.57% under FedAvg and 89.50% under FedProx were achieved at α = 1.0. This represents an improvement of up to 37% over LSTM at the same level of heterogeneity.

Optimization of scours downstream of conduit aerators

Arici, Erdinc; Tuna, M. Cihat; Aytac, Ayca; Acar, Ramazan; Tunc, Mustafa

Dams, wastewater treatment plants, and aquaculture areas often require aeration, making it crucial for hydraulic engineers to predict the physical properties of scour holes occurring on the downstream side of conduits. Conduit systems that provide high aeration performance necessitate multiple optimization studies to simultaneously maximize the scour parameters and the system’s physical properties. In this study, the physical parameters of conduit systems and downstream scour parameters were optimized using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). The optimum system parameters were identified based on the experimental results through ANN-based optimization. Additionally, the real and optimal effects of the parameters on aeration performance and scour were determined. The results of the study demonstrated that ANN can be effectively used in studies aimed at optimizing the aeration performance and scour values of conduits. This study is the first to apply ANN for the simultaneous optimization of both aeration efficiency (Qa/Qw) and scour characteristics (dmax and δ) in a conduit-based hydraulic system. Previous studies have typically focused on either scour or aeration individually; this study integrates both through a multi-objective ANN model. The findings provide novel insights for the design and retrofitting of energy-dissipating conduit structures in high-head dam applications. Unlike traditional empirical or regression-based approaches, the ANN model captures complex, nonlinear relationships among multiple interacting hydraulic variables. It identified optimal parameter combinations — such as 70% gate opening, 1.30–1.50 m conduit length, and 9 mm air hole diameter — that improve both aeration and scour behavior. These outcomes offer direct applicability for real-world hydraulic system optimization.

Using Camelina Seed Mucilage as a Fat Replacer in the Production of Cookies and Its Effect on Physicochemical and Technological Properties

Ozcan, Yasemin; Ozdemir-Orhan, Necla; Eroglu, Zeynep; Yilmaz, Merve Silanur

In this study, for the first time, camelina (Camelina sativa (L.) Crtz.) seed mucilage (CM) was used as a fat substitute in a cookie formula, and the physicochemical, textural, and functional properties of mucilage-incorporated cookies were investigated. The moisture, protein, ash, fat, and carbohydrate content of the CM was 6.46% ± 0.35%, 17.44% ± 0.62%, 11.49% ± 0.39%, 1.27% ± 0.10%, and 63.16% ± 0.58%, respectively. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy identified acidic (–COOH) functional groups in the CM. Four distinct cookie samples were examined: The control-cookie, 20% CM-cookie, 40% CM-cookie, and 60% CM-cookie were prepared by replacing shortening with CM at 0%, 20%, 40%, and 60% levels, respectively. The mucilage-incorporated doughs were softer, springy, cohesive, and resilient compared to the control dough (p < 0.05). As for the cookies, the fat content of the 20% CM-cookie, 40% CM-cookie, and 60% CM-cookie samples decreased by 12.52%, 31.49%, and 50.12%, respectively, compared to the control-cookie. The control-cookie had the lowest baking loss (p < 0.05), and the baking loss values of the mucilage-incorporated cookies increased with increasing fat replacement level. The highest spread ratio was recorded in the 20% CM-cookie, followed by the control-cookie (p < 0.05). The highest hardness and brittleness values (70.68 ± 3.37 N and 11.52 ± 0.34 mm) belonged to the 60% CM-cookie, whereas the lowest (19.42 ± 1.42 N and 8.80 ± 0.26 mm) belonged to the control-cookie (p < 0.05). Incorporating mucilage into the cookie formula increased the total phenolic compound content but decreased the antioxidant activity. These results show that CM has potential utility as a fat substitute in cookie production without significant quality loss.

Biochemical Responses of Zebra Mussel Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas, 1771) (Bivalvia: Dreissenidae) against Cadmium

Alişer, Ahmet Bedrettin; Aydin, Rahmi; Serdar, Osman

The biochemical reactions of zebra mussels Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas, 1771) exposed to different concentrations of cadmium (Cd) in the acute period (24 and 96 hours after treatment) were studied. Four variants of experimental treatment were examined: 0 μg/L Cd (control), 10 μg/L Cd, 20 μg/L Cd and 40 μg/L Cd. Changes in the enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione (GSH) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels were determined using ELISA kits. In D. polymorpha exposed to the three experimental concentrations of cadmium, there was a statistically significant decrease (p<0.05) in SOD enzyme activity with increasing concentration or exposure times. No change was observed in CAT enzyme activity with increasing concentrations. The decrease in the activity depending on the exposure times was not statistically significant (p>0.05). As for GPx enzyme activity, a significant increase was detected after Cd application compared to the control (p<0.05). TBARS and GSH levels increased significantly in all Cd application groups compared to the control at 24 and 96 hours. The effects of different concentrations of Cd on D. polymorpha in the acute period were associated with changes in SOD, CAT, GPx enzyme activities. TBARS and GSH levels were effective parameters in determining the oxidative damage caused by Cd.
