- MakaleAçık Erişim2011Scopus SJRQ2Biochemical Taste Parameters in Meat and Sea Products
Kayim, M.; Cimen, M.; Can, E.; Kocabas, M.
Flavour of meat or sea products is generally thought to consist of the volatile components sensed in the nose, both through the nostrils and from inside the mouth. Taste results from the combination of basic flavors (sweet, sour, bitter, salt and umami). The flavors and aromas associated with meat and sea foods are generally those that develop during heating and cooking. Animal products such as meat and sea foods have very complex composition and definition of their quality are very complicated. Different food components have different tastes. Sweet flavor in meat or sea products is derived from sugars, amino acids and organic acids. Carbohydrates generally taste sweet. Fats have little taste, but contribute mouth feel and carry odorants. Lipids have an effect on flavor perception, stability and generation. In this review, it was aimed to inform basic flavor parameters of animal products such as meat and sea foods.

- MakaleYalnız künye2015Scopus SJRQ3Capacity of a newly isolated fungus Pleurotus eryngii from Tunceli, Ovacik for chemical oxygen demand reduction and biodecolorization of Azo-Dye Congo Red
Yildirim, N.; Gonen, U.
Biodecolorization of Congo red dye in both agar-plate and agitated liquid culture mediums by newly isolated white rot fungus Pleurotus eryngii has been studied. This fungus isolated from Tunceli-Ovacik province of Turkey. We have also examined the chemical oxygen demand reduction after decolorization under agitated liquid culture medium. For agar plate screening the decolorization capacity of P. eryngii, growth and decolorization halos were determined on saboroud dextrose agar (SDA) plates containing 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1 and 2 g/l of Congo red. P. eryngii showed certain decolorization capacities and was able to decolorize all studied concentrations of Congo red, but not to the same extent. Our results indicated that the new isolate P. eryngii had maximum decolorization (87% at 100 mg/l initial dye concentration) and chemical oxygen demand reduction (82% at 25 mg/l initial dye concentration) activities after 7 days under agitated submerged culture conditions. This new isolate could be an effective bioremediation tool for treatment of Congo red containing textile wastewater.

- MakaleYalnız künye2015Scopus SJRQ3EVALUATING THE DILUTION OF MUNICIPAL WASTEWATER ON BIOMASS INCREASE, LIPID PRODUCTION AND NUTRIENT REMOVAL BY THE BLUE-GREEN ALGAE Spirulina platensis (Geitler)
Can, Safak Seyhaneyildiz; Demir, Veysel; Can, Erkan
Wastewater generated daily in urban localities could provide nourishment to algae for potential production of biofuel and biochemicals. This study presents an integrated approach to the use of Spirulina platensis cultures for the treatment of domestic wastewater and lipid extraction. In this experimental approach, wastewater subjected only to the primary settling process was used as nutrient media at different concentrations of 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25% wastewater diluted with distilled water, and Spirulina platensis was cultured in these mediums for 20 days. The inoculated medium was incubated at 30 degrees C in the presence of light (42 mu mol photon m(-2).s(-1)) by using light/dark cycle of 12 hours. S. platensis consumed nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and ammonium from wastewater, and it increased its biomass and its lipid amount. Although the highest biomass increase was observed at the wastewater medium without dilution (100% wastewater) (the control group was not included), the highest lipid production was found in 25% wastewater. On the other hand, the percent reduction in the level of nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and ammonium in 75% wastewater medium was 91%, 99%, 99% and 99%, respectively. Despite the low lipid content, since Spirulina platensis can live in harsh conditions and increase its biomass rapidly, they can be easily cultivated in wastewater. Therefore, their use in wastewater for biodiesel production was found appropriate. The resulting algae biomass after oil extraction can be also used in different industrial sectors.

- MakaleYalnız künye2012Scopus SJRQ4THE EFFECT OF SEPARATION FROM DAM ON SUCKLING DURATION AND FREQUENCY OF LAMBS
Cimen, M.
The influence of separation from dam on suckling behavior of lambs was tested from day 5 after lambing until the lambs were 8 days old. The twelve ewes with their lambs were randomly assigned in equal numbers to two treatments; separating from dam (S) and non-separating without suckling (NS). Separation from dam resulted in lower duration and higher frequency of suckling. The lambs in S treatment had shown lower milk intake as compared to rearing lambs by NS treatment until 8th day. Milk intake, duration and frequency of suckling in both groups decreased as age of the lamb increased until last day. Separation treatment was associated with stress in dams and their lambs had negative effect on suckling behavior and milk intake of offspring.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Investigation of Uplift Rate History of the Yuksekova Basin (Southeast Turkey)
Sançar, Taylan
The 90 km long and N50 degrees-60 degrees W oriented right lateral Semdinli Yuksekova Fault Zone (SYFZ) is located at the southeast of the EACP. The most prominent morphotectonic structure of the SYFZ is the Yuksekova Basin that has a long axis striking in NW-SE direction with a length of 38 km and the maximum width of 10 km. In this study, morphometric indices were used to investigate the uplift characteristics of the basin. According to the Mountainfront sinuosity (S-mf) and the ratio of valley-floor width to valley-height index (V-f) calculations along the mountain fronts on the northern and southern margins of the Yuksekova Basin, the faults that delimit the basin margins have high activity, and the uplift rate is not less than 0.5 mm /yr. Spatial distribution of the m/n values of the drainage areas reveals that the SYFZ have driven the rock uplift around the basin rather than the large-scale lithospheric processes. The integral analysis (chi=chi) of the tributaries in the drainage areas located close to the faults that delimit the Yuksekova Basin indicate that the uplift rate of the basin changes over time regardless of the m/n ratio. The integral analyses of lithological units, which are resistant to erosion around the basin, reveal that uplift rate has been changed four times.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ1Morphometric investigations on the NW Bitlis-Zagros mountain range (SE Turkey): Implications for the internal deformation of the western Turkish-Iranian Plateau
Sançar, Taylan
Collision of the Arabian and Eurasian plates has resulted in uplift of the Turkish-Iranian Plateau, where debate continues over how post-collisional convergence is being converted to strain. The internal deformation models of the plateau have taken into account the distribution of deformation in the NW-trending Bitlis-Zagros Mountain Range (BZMR), the southern boundary of the collision. The western end of the BZMR is marked by contrasting topographic relief resulting from the coupling of tectonic and erosional processes. This region providing an excellent record for undertaking quantitative analysis which can improve our understanding of its tectonic evolution. Mountain front analyses reveal that each fault segment located in front of the western BZMR falls within the limits of Class-1 that corresponds to an uplift rate of >0.5 mm yr(-1). Hypsometric and basin asymmetry analysis were analyzed for 93 drainage basins, indicating that weakly to moderately eroded basins can be moderately to strongly asymmetric but show no uniform tilting direction. Channel concavity, integral and knickpoint analyses suggest that, apart from the thrust fault that represents the margin of the collision zone, there is no pronounced single geological constraint that causes differential tectonic uplift and furthermore implies that the effect is distributed across multiple different structures. The findings of this study suggest that continuous lower rate horizontal displacement has occurred in this region since the onset of collision, but also indicates that the western end of the BZMR represents a zone of higher convergence, in which shortening is being converted to the vertical plane strain.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITIES AND SOME BIOCHEMICAL CONTENTS OF THE SEEDS OF THE OKUZGOZU AND BOGAZKERE (Vitis vinifera L.) GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN IN TURKEY
Aydin, Sevinc
The Vitis vinifera L. grape species is a fruit that is the most prevalently grown in the whole world and has economic significance. It is known that, due to its climate conditions, Turkey has rich resources in terms of Vitis vinifera L. With this study, we aimed to determine the phenolic, vitamin and fatty acid contents of the Okuzgozu and Bogazkere varieties of Vitis vinifera L. and see the effects of these contents on antioxidant activity. Fatty acids in the lipid extract were analyzed by gas chromatography after conversion into methyl esters. For flavonoid and vitamin analyses, a high-performance liquid chromatography device (HPLC-UV. Shimadzu) was used. Antioxidant activity was determined by Radical Scavenging Activity (DPPH) and Lipid Peroxidation (MDA) experiments, As a result of the study, some saturated and unsaturated fatty acid, phenolic compound and vitamin contents of the two varieties were obtained. It was observed that the amounts of unsaturated fatty acids, whose effects on antioxidant activity are known, in the Okuzgozu variety were significantly higher than those in the Bogazkere variety. The results on phenolic and vitamin compounds revealed higher amounts in the Okuzgozu variety in comparison to Bogazkere as in the case of fatty acids. The finding that these contents and antioxidant activity were in proportion suggested that the antioxidant effect of the Okuzgozu variety is higher. If the substances that provide this effect are correctly isolated from the plant, they may be used beneficially in both the food and pharmaceutical sectors.
- MakaleYalnız künye2012Scopus SJRQ4Phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing in the Homa Lagoon (Izmir Bay, Turkey)
Banu, Kutlu
Phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing were investigated at one station in the Homa Lagoon from February to January in 2006-2007. Our results showed significant seasonal variations in phytoplankton dynamics. Microzooplankton was mainly composed of dinoflagellates and tintinnid ciliates and nauplii. Microzooplankton grazing increased with increasing of temperature. Grazing rate was maximum levels in spring and summer. Microphytoplankton, which dominated the total algal biomass and production, were characterized by the proliferation of several chain-forming diatoms. Small heterotrophic flagellates and aloricate ciliates were the main controllers of phytoplankton. Phytoplankton represented a significant for micrograzers, which grazing represented 20-120% of diatom and cynabacteria algal production during 2006-2007. Microzooplankton has, however, a relatively high impact on microphytoplankton, as > 45% of microalgal production was consumed throughout the year. These results suggest that the low grazing was one of the factors contributing to the development of the spring bloom. All of seasonal bases, the phytoplankton production were grazed by microzooplankton in summer, autumn and winter-spring seasons have been changing between 20%-120%. The seasonal variation in the microzooplankton grazing pressure seems to result from the dominant size class of the phytoplankton community of this lagoon diatom and cynabacteria.

- MakaleYalnız künye2019Scopus SJRQ4THE TOXIC EFFECT OF CADMIUM ON HUMAN ERYTHROCYTES AND NAC'S PROTECTIVE ROLE
Sahilli, Yeliz Cakir
The toxic effects cadmium (Cd), which is a heavy metal, on human erythrocytes and protective effects of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes were investigated. The effects of 1, 50, 150 mu M doses of cadmium and 1mM NAC on the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) in human erythrocytes and superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzyme activities were investigated. When the Cd was applied alone, it was found that MDA level increased in erythrocytes and SOD, CAT and GPx activities decreased. No statistically significant difference was observed when 1mM NAC administered erythrocytes were compared with the control cells. However, the beneficial effect was seen only in administration doses of Cd at the levels of I and 50 mu M and NAC was observed to have a protective effect. As a result, NAC partially reduced the toxic effect caused by Cd on erythrocytes but could not completely prevent it.
- MakaleYalnız künye2021THE EFFECT ON JOB SATISFACTION OF EXECUTIVE SUPPORT PERCEPTION OF COACHES IN TURKEY
Kizilkoca, Mustafa; Namli, Aysel Kizilkaya
This study aims to determine the effect of coaches' perception of executive support on job satisfaction. A relational screening model was used in the study for this purpose. Disproportionate sampling was used within the scope of the study, and 516 coaches working in various provinces of Turkey composed a sample of the study. The scale of executive support developed by Karasek et.al (1985) and adapted by Kula (2011) and the scale of job satisfaction made by Bilir and Keser (2019) was used in the collection of data. Pearson Correlation analysis was used to reveal the relationship between scores from scales, Linear Regression analysis was used to determine whether the scores obtained affected each other. Error level in the study was taken as p<0.01. It has been determined that there is a positive and meaningful relationship between the executive support levels of coaches in Turkey and the levels of job satisfaction. It can be said that as the level of executive support increases, the levels of job satisfaction increase. According to linear regression analysis, it was determined that the level of executive support positively affected the job satisfaction levels of coaches. It was observed that the executives' support scores of coaches in Turkey were higher than average with an average of 3.53 and job satisfaction scores were high with an average of 4.08 in our study.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025Scopus SJRQ1Trade openness, inequality, and internal conflict: global evidence from a dynamic panel analysis
Ates, Erdem
PurposeThis study investigates how trade openness influences internal conflict, emphasizing the moderating role of income inequality. It aims to clarify whether the benefits of globalization translate into domestic peace or exacerbate internal unrest when income distribution is unequal.Design/methodology/approachUsing an unbalanced panel of 126 countries from 1999 to 2022, the study applies a dynamic panel data framework based on two-step System Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimators. This approach accounts for potential endogeneity, autocorrelation, and heterogeneity across countries. Robustness tests include alternative lag structures and difference GMM estimations.FindingsEmpirical results reveal that trade openness and GDP per capita significantly reduce the risk of internal conflict, supporting the liberal peace hypothesis. In contrast, higher income inequality, inflation, democracy index, market concentration, and external conflict increase conflict risk. The findings confirm the embedded liberalism thesis, indicating that trade promotes peace only when accompanied by redistributive domestic policies that mitigate inequality.Research limitations/implicationsThis study is subject to several limitations. While it offers robust empirical findings, the use of panel data limits the ability to capture country-specific dynamics and institutional nuances. Moreover, internal conflict is a multifaceted phenomenon influenced by non-economic factors not fully addressed in the model. Despite these limitations, the results provide valuable insights for policymakers, suggesting that trade openness alone may not ensure peace without addressing domestic inequality. Future research may benefit from disaggregated analyses or mixed-method approaches to better understand the country-level mechanisms linking globalization and internal conflict.Practical implicationsThe results suggest that policymakers should complement liberalization policies with inclusive welfare measures and skill-based interventions to ensure that trade benefits are broadly shared, preventing distributional grievances that may lead to instability.Social implicationsThis study highlights the social risks of uneven globalization. While trade can promote economic growth, its benefits must be distributed fairly to prevent societal fragmentation. High income inequality can erode trust, deepen social divisions, and increase the likelihood of unrest. Furthermore, democratization without strong institutions may fail to foster cohesion, especially in developing societies. These findings stress the importance of inclusive development policies that promote both economic opportunity and social equity to ensure long-term internal stability and reduce the risk of conflict.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the literature by integrating trade theory and conflict analysis within a dynamic panel framework, offering one of the few cross-country empirical examinations of how trade openness, inequality, and internal conflict interact over time.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ3A never-ending story of an identity crisis or a creative reformulation of an Alevi-mindset? What the case of Alevi youth in the German diaspora suggest today?
Gueltekin, Ahmet Kerim
The Alevi movement, originating more than three decades ago in Turkey and the Western European diaspora, has led to significant social and cultural shifts within Alevi communities. This movement witnessed the emergence of Alevi associations, increased religio-political activities, and a fervent search for a redefined Alevi identity. The quest for a comprehensive understanding of Alevi identity remains a contested debate, prominently reflected within Alevi youth, who navigate complex socio-cultural landscapes and encounter challenges in defining their identity amidst competing narratives and associations. This paper examines the identity formation strategies of young Alevis in Berlin, drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted between 2021 and 2023. Contrary to mainstream portrayals of Alevi youth experiencing a loss of identity, this study argues for the presence of continuity dynamics, emphasising inherited Alevi mindsets and emotions. Through interviews and analysis of a documentary produced by Berlin Alevi youth, the paper explores new narratives about Alevi history, sociology, and theology constructed by young Alevis, highlighting their role in shaping contemporary Alevism in Germany. This research contributes original data and discussions to the existing literature on Alevi youth, shedding light on their evolving identities and the dynamics of Alevi discourse in diasporic settings.
