Automatic mining of accurate and comprehensible numerical classification rules with cat swarm optimization algorithm

    Akyol, Sinem; Alatas, Bilal

Optimization is the process of finding the best solution of a problem. There are many optimization algorithms proposed for optimization problems. The metaheuristic algorithm can give solutions close to optimum in an acceptable period of time for large-scaled optimization problems. The metaheuristic optimization algorithms are evaluated in seven different groups which are biology-based, physics-based, swarm-based, social-based, music-based, sport-based, and chemistry-based. The swarm-based optimization algorithms have been developed by observing the behaviors of creatures e.g. birds, fishes, cats, bees etc. Data mining is the process of discovery of meaningful and useful data within huge databases. Classification rules mining is one of the most commonly studied data mining problems and with methods for this problem, users can easily understand the rules extracted from databases. In this work, one of the most recent swarm based optimization algorithm, Cat Swarm Optimization (CSO), has been firstly used for classification rules mining within databases composed of numerical or mixed data types automatically. There is not any preprocess for finding true ranges for appropriate attributes of the rules, this has been automatically done by CSO. Furthermore, the used objective function is very flexible and many different objectives can easily be added to. For this purpose, four numerical databases obtained from UCI data warehouse have been used and accurate and comprehensible classification rules have been mined. The results have been compared with the results obtained from Weka program. Although CSO has not been embedded with any improvement and has firstly implemented in this research area, the obtained results seem promising.

Effects of harvesting time and modified atmosphere packaging on biochemical changes in potato tubers

    Batu, Ali; Sen, Levent

Undamaged potato tubers (cv. 'Marfona') grown in Tokat, Turkey, were used in this study. The tubers were cured for two weeks at 15 degrees C and 75-85% relative humidity. The tubers were sorted for size, shape and physical damage and were divided into two groups. One group was left unwrapped and the other was placed on polystyrene trays and heat-sealed in 30, 40 or 60 mu m low density polyethylene (LDPE) film or 38 mu m c-polypropylene (CPP) film. The samples were kept in temperature-controlled rooms at 5 +/- 1 degrees C and 75-85% RH for eight months. Samples were taken every month during storage, and the internal colour, ascorbic acid, titratable acidity, pH and total soluble solids were determined. Results indicate that the harvesting time and storage period significantly affected quality parameters. The highest increases in total soluble solids, minimum change in pH, lowest titratable acidity and ascorbic acid values were found in tubers in 38 mu m CPP harvested on July 25th. The lowest pH and ascorbic acids were found in the 40 mu m LDPE packaged tubers, while maximum titratable acidity was found in the unwrapped tubers harvested on 20th September. The L* values indicate that the internal lightness of the tubers generally decreased during the storage period, indicating that they became a bit darker during storage.

ELDERLY IN BETWEEN: THE EFFECTS OF MIGRATION FROM RURAL TO URBAN AREAS ON THE ELDERLY

Güler, Zuhal; Özsel, Dogancan; Güler, Nuran

As a consequence of migration from rural to urban areas, which gained momentum since the 1950's, younger people have moved to cities but the elderly were either remained to live in the emptied villages in both winter and summer times, or moved back and forth between the two in different times of the year. The subject of this study is to find out the socio-economic profiles and life-satisfaction of this latter group that remained in between the two. Elderly individuals focused on this study are those who have born in villages but, currently, can only live in their villages in summer and move to urban areas, mostly to Istanbul, in times of winter. As shown in the study, if possible, they would like to remain in their own villages with their partners, and, if he or she is past, then with their children. The data is collected through both quantitative and qualitative techniques. A questionnaire form is applied in the Zara district of the city of Sivas, to 436 individuals over 65 years old from 20 different villages, who live in those villages in summer times and move to urban areas in winters. Also as a qualitative technique, both elderly individuals and officials from related government institutions are interviewed in-depth.

Uranium (VI) Biosorption on Marine Sponge, Sarcotragus foetidus (Schmidt, 1862) and Its Statistical Investigation Using Central Composite Design

Celik, Fatih; Camas, Mustafa; Camas, Anil Sazak; Ozalp, Hasan Baris

The biosorption of heavy metals, radionuclides, uranium and thorium for the recovery or removal from aqueous systems using various micro-organisms and biological substances has been investigated by several groups of workers. In this paper, the uptake of uranium (VI) from aqueous systems by a marine sponge, Sarcotragus foetidus (Schmidt, 1862) has been investigated. S. foetidus samples were collected from Babakale/Ayvacik/Canakkale in Turkey. Uranium (VI) uptake experiments were carried out by the batch technique. The affecting parameters were analyzed using Central Composite Design (CCD) as the experimental method. Four independent variables such-pH, temperature, contact time, and initial uranium concentration were selected for this study. The influences of initial pH, contact time, and initial uranium concentration on the biosorption process were considered statistically significant as main effects. On the other hand, interaction effects of pH and contact time, as well as pH and initial uranium concentration, were considered as significant parameters on the biosorption process. The optimum condition of biosorption process was found to be at initial pH: 4, temperature: 35 degrees C, initial uranium concentration: 20 mg/L, and contact time: 31 minutes. At these conditions, the biosorption yield of uranium (VI) ions was obtained to be 93.29 +/- 2%.

Anticancer and Cytotoxic Activities of [Cu(C6H16N2O2)2][Ni(CN)4] and [Cu(C6H16N2O2) Pd(CN)4] Cyanidometallate Compounds on HT29, HeLa, C6 and Vero Cell Lines

Aydin, Ali; Korkmaz, Sengul Aslan; Demir, Veysel; Tekin, Saban

Background: In cancer, apoptosis relevant proteins-such as CaM kinase, Bcl-2 or P53, topoisomerase I, cell migration feature and DNA/BSA-macromolecules represent significant targets for current chemotherapeutics. Objective: We recently reported two coordination compounds-[Cu(C6H16N2O2)(2)][Ni(CN)(4)] (1) and [Cu(C6H16 N2O2) Pd(CN)(4)] (2)-together with their IR spectra, magnetic properties, thermal analyses and crystal structures. Herein, we describe the ability of these complexes to induce apoptosis in relevant proteins and stimulate topoisomerase I activity, cell migration velocity and DNA/BSA binding properties. Method: The in vitro antiproliferative effects and cell toxicity of both compounds were investigated through pharmacological measurement techniques, and interactions between both compounds and CT-DNA/BSA were studied with UV-Vis spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. Results & Conclusion: Studies on cells revealed that 2 (i) demonstrated a high antiproliferative effect, which was higher toward HeLa and C6 cancer cells than toward healthy Vero cells; (ii) impaired the migration of HeLa cells; (iii) altered the P53-Bcl-2 ratio in favor of apoptosis; (iv) strongly bound to DNA/BSA macromolecules; and (v) inhibited human topoisomerase I and KpnI or BamHI restriction endonucleases. In conclusion, this preliminary information demonstrates that 2 may represent a promising antiproliferative agent and a potential candidate for a therapeutic approach against HeLa.

    Derse, Onur; Polat, Elifcan Gocmen

In recent years, there is growing interest for evaluation of urban flood risks of cities over the past decade due to rapid urbanization and climate change. The optimal flood risk assessment is strategically achieved not only with classical risk modelling approaches but also with holistic and comprehensive framework. This paper focuses on a detailed flood assessment providing risk database for policymakers and urban planners to decide the flood prone areas in Turkey. In this context, the Entropy based VIKOR (VIseKriterijumska Optimizacija Kompromisno Resenje) was provided to evaluate a range of flood risk criteria named number of floods, population density and number of buildings, flood protection area which are under the concept of risk dimension including hazard, exposure and vulnerability aspects. Computational results demonstrate that the provinces of & Scedil;anl & imath;urfa, Ordu, Zonguldak and Van are assigned with higher urban risk values, respectively and the ranking of the cities was presented with different q values. The findings should support practitioners and researchers for land use planning and risk reduction works as the detailed flood risk evaluation was presented in terms of the flood management.

The Effect of Different Feeding Protocols on Compensatory Growth of Black Sea Trout Salmo trutta labrax

Kocabas, Mehmet; Basçinar, Nadir; Kayim, Murathan; Er, Halil; Sahin, Halit

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of different feeding protocols on compensatory growth, feeding rate, and feed conversion efficiency of Black Sea Trout Salmo trutta labrax. To our knowledge, no previous feeding experiments with Black Sea Trout have incorporated a fasting period to simulate the handling and acclimation conditions experienced by farmed fish. Fifteen fish per tank (10.69 +/- 0.06cm and 13.22 +/- 0.14g, mean +/- SE) were stocked into 40-L fiberglass tanks. Fish were fed with different fasting-feeding regimes for 95 d and were equally allotted to four treatments (T-cont: control; T5-10: 5 d fasting, 10days feeding; T10-10: 10 d fasting, 10 d feeding; and T15-10: 15 d fasting, 10 d feeding) with three replicates per treatment. The results indicated that length (P = 0.0005), weight (P = 0.000), condition factor (P = 0.013), and specific growth rate (P = 0.014) were significantly affected by the interaction between feeding and time. All fasting treatments showed partial compensation during refeeding. There was an increase in daily feeding rate and feed conversion efficiency in fasting treatments compared with the control treatment. In contrast, at the end of the experiment specific growth rate, condition factor, and body weight in fasting treatments were significantly lower compared with the control treatment. We concluded that there was partial compensation of growth with regular refeeding after periods of feed deprivation (e.g., 5, 10, or 15 d) over a long term and a shorter fasting period may be preferred in order to achieve compensatory growth. A Real-Time Power Quality Disturbance Detection System Based On The Wavelet Transform

Eristi, Belkis; Yildirim, Ozal; Eristi, Huseyin; Demir, Yakup

Disturbances occurring on voltage signals following switching events or faults on power systems are defined as power quality problem. Power quality problems result in significant financial losses in the power systems in addition to faulty operation or breakdown of sensitive loads connected to the power system. Therefore, power quality problems should be swiftly detected and eliminated. This paper proposes a real-time embedded detection system for the purpose of identification of power quality disturbances. The detection system developed has been created using the wavelet transform in the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) media. The general structure of FPGA-based detection system comprises two fundamental parts: hardware and software. Hardware structure comprises signal input card, FPGA and computer components. The software stage includes FPGA and graphical interface software. An experimental setup of the power system has been created in laboratory environment in order to test the FPGA-based detection system, determine accuracy rates and assess its success. Various power quality disturbances have been created over this model in wide parameter intervals. When the results obtained for the real-time power quality disturbance detection system developed under this study are examined, it has been seen that hardware and software designs are quite effective, fast and of high achievement performance.

Effect of Fly Ash and Silica Fume on compressive strength, sorptivity and carbonation of SCC

Turk, Kazim; Karatas, Mehmet; Gonen, Tahir

In this paper, ASTM C 618 Class F Fly Ash (FA) at 25%, 30%, 35% and 40% and Silica Fume (SF) at 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% replacement of Portland Cement (PC) CEM I 42.5 in SCC was used to evaluate the effect of types and quantity of powder additions on compressive strength and permeations properties of SCC. To this end, eight types of SCC were designed, in comparison with Vibrated Traditional Concrete (VTC). The results indicated that SCC specimens with SF15 had the highest compressive strength with 73.87 MPa for 130 days. The sorptivity values of SCC specimens with FA and SF were lower than those of VTC specimens regardless of type and quantity of powder additions. On the other hand, the carbonation resistance of VTC was higher than that of SCC specimens containing both SF and FA for all accelerated carbonation periods. Consequently, it can be said that type and quantity of powder additions had an important effect on the correlation among the compressive strength and permeation properties of SCC.

Bioaccumulation, Subacute Toxicity, and Tissue Distribution of Engineered Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles in Goldfish (Carassius auratus)

Ates, Mehmet; Demir, Veysel; Adiguzel, Ragip; Arslan, Zikri

The increased use of nanosized materials is likely to result in the release of these particles into the environment. It is, however, unclear if these materials are harmful to aquatic animals. In this study, the sublethal effects of exposure of low and high concentrations of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) on goldfish (Carassius auratus) were investigated. Accumulation of TiO2 NPs increased from 42.71 to 110.68 ppb in the intestine and from 4.10 to 9.86 ppb in the gills of the goldfish with increasing exposure dose from 10 to 100mg/L TiO2 NPs. No significant accumulation in the muscle and brain of the fish was detected. Malondialdehyde as a biomarker of lipid oxidation was detected in the liver of the goldfish. Moreover, TiO2 NPs exposure inhibited growth of the goldfish. Although there was an increase (8.1%) in the body weights of the goldfish for the control group, in the low and high exposure groups 1.8% increase and 19.7% decrease were measured, respectively. The results of this study contribute to the current understanding of the potential ecotoxicological effects of nanoparticles and highlight the importance of characterization of NPs in understanding their behavior, uptake, and effects in aquatic systems and in fish.

Automatic Mining of Numerical Classification Rules with Parliamentary Optimization Algorithm

    Kiziloluk, Soner; Alatas, Bilal

In recent years, classification rules mining has been one of the most important data mining tasks. In this study, one of the newest social-based metaheuristic methods, Parliamentary Optimization Algorithm (POA), is firstly used for automatically mining of comprehensible and accurate classification rules within datasets which have numerical attributes. Four different numerical datasets have been selected from UCI data warehouse and classification rules of high quality have been obtained. Furthermore, the results obtained from designed POA have been compared with the results obtained from four different popular classification rules mining algorithms used in WEKA. Although POA is very new and no applications in complex data mining problems have been performed, the results seem promising. The used objective function is very flexible and many different objectives can easily be added to. The intervals of the numerical attributes in the rules have been automatically found without any a priori process, as done in other classification rules mining algorithms, which causes the modification of datasets.

The Rise of Household Debt in Global Economy and Türkiye

Birdal, Murat; Acun, Serdar; Onuk, Parla

This paper investigates the rise of household debt and its impact on class relations and the sustainability of capitalism. The analysis begins with a historical perspective on the factors contributing to household debt growth, such as declining wages, increasing pressure on organized labor, and the need to maintain consumer demand in the face of declining profit margins. The paper then compares the dynamics of household debt across countries and examines Turkiye's case in a global context. The findings suggest that unsustainable household debt levels, declining wages, and rising inequality; raise doubts about the long-term sustainability of capitalism as we know it. The paper advocates for rethinking economic policies and practices, prioritizing the well-being and prosperity of the majority.

Disinfection of Gilthead Sea Bream (Sparus aurata), Red Porgy (Pagrus pagrus), and Common Dentex (Dentex dentex) Eggs from Sparidae with Different Disinfectants

Can, Erkan; Saka, Sahin; Firat, Kuersat

The aim of this study is to determine suitable conditions for egg disinfection of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata), red porgy (Pagrus pagrus), and common dentex (Dentex dentex) with glutaraldehyde, hydrogen peroxide and iodine. The eggs were disinfected with 200 ppm glutaraldehyde (T= 2, 4, 8, 16 min), 300 ppm hydrogen peroxide and iodine (T= 5, 10, 15, 20 min) at four different contact times. The hatching rate was determined in triplicates for each treatment. Also, bacteria colonies were counted on tryptic soy agar (TSA) and thiosulphate citrate bile salt sucrose agar (TCBS). At the end of the experiment, bacterial load and hatching rate were assessed together. For glutaraldehyde treatment, optimal hatching rates and bacterial colonies were estimated as CT (Disinfectant concentration in mg.l(-1)* exposure time in minute) 800 for sea bream eggs, CT 1600 for red porgy eggs and CT 800-1600 for common dentex eggs. Also, for hydrogen peroxide treatments, they were determined as CT 3000 for sea bream and red porgy and CT 4500 for common dentex. Finally, in iodine treatments, these parameters were measured as CT 4500-6000 for all species' eggs. However, in our study, it is clear that the glutaraldehyde showed the optimum disinfection effect against the microorganisms because the bacteria could be eliminated completely.

Distribution of neuropeptides in endocrine and exocrine pancreas of long-legged buzzard (Buteo rufinus): An immunohistochemical study

Bayrakdar, Ali; Yaman, Mine; Atalar, Omer; Tarakci, Berrin Gencer; Ceribasi, Songul

This study aimed to determine the existence and distribution of certain neuropeptides in endocrine and exocrine pancreas of the long-legged buzzard by using immunohistochemical methods. SOM-14-, NPY- and CGRP-IR endocrine cells were determined in both central and peripheral regions in A-islets within the pancreas, while SP-IR endocrine cells were found only in the central region, and CCK-8- and galanin-IR endocrine cells were only detected in peripheral region. On the other hand, in B-islets; SP-, NPY- and CGRP-IR endocrine cells were determined in both central and peripheral regions, while SOM-14- CCK-8- and galanin-IR endocrine cells were found only in the peripheral region. In addition; SOM-14-, NPY-, CGRP-. CCK-8- and galanin-IR cells were also observed in exocrine pancreas. This distribution pattern in the pancreas of the long-legged buzzard demonstrates that neuropeptides perform their probable affects through endocrine and/or paracrine mechanisms. In conclusion, the existence and distribution of neuropeptides in the pancreas of long-legged buzzard have been introduced in this study for the first time and this bird species has also been found to differ from other types of avian species.
