Hotaman, İncihan
J. M. Coetzee’s Age of Iron presents a profound exploration of the interplay between private experience and public reality within apartheid-era South Africa. This paper argues that the novel situates Mrs. Elizabeth Curren’s personal suffering, her terminal illness, and her moral awakening as a microcosm of the broader social, political, and ethical collapse of the nation. Through the epistolary form, Coetzee provides a lens into Mrs. Curren’s growing awareness of the violent oppression endured by Black South Africans, highlighting the intersections of complicity, guilt, and the consequences of historical injustice. The novel’s meticulous depiction of her deteriorating body, her decaying home, and her limited interactions with figures such as Florence serves as an allegorical reflection of South Africa’s fragmented society and failing apartheid state. Mrs. Curren’s cancer functions as both a personal and cultural symbol, embodying the cumulative effects of shame and moral repression, while her experiences in the township of Guguletu reveal the stark contrast between mediated images of reality and lived oppression. By analyzing the novel’s layering of personal illness, ethical reflection, and socio-political critique, this paper demonstrates how Coetzee transforms large-scale historical violence into intimate, embodied experience. Ultimately, Age of Iron illuminates the inextricable connection between individual conscience and collective responsibility, illustrating how witnessing oppression entails both suffering and moral reckoning. The novel’s conclusion, which signals the emergence of a new identity rather than simply marking death, underscores the potential for ethical and personal renewal even amidst systemic collapse.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Neo-orientalism in reverse: the voice of the “other” in mohsin hamid’s the reluctant fundamentalist
Hotaman, İncihan
This article offers a postcolonial and narratological analysis of Mohsin Hamid’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist, arguing that the novel actively reverses Neo-Orientalist discourse through its narrative structure and use of focalization. Situating the text within post-9/11 cultural and political contexts, the study examines how dominant Western media and literary narratives have constructed Muslim identity through binaries of threat, irrationality, and otherness. Against this background, the article demonstrates how Hamid reclaims narrative authority by centering a Muslim protagonist who speaks in his own voice and controls the terms of representation. Drawing on postcolonial theory and narratology, particularly Gérard Genette’s concept of focalization and its later revisions, the paper argues that the novel’s monologic form and first-person narration transform the Muslim subject from an object of the Western gaze into an active focalizer. By rendering the Western listener silent and epistemologically subordinate, the novel destabilizes conventional subject–object hierarchies that underpin Neo-Orientalist representation. Ultimately, the article contends that The Reluctant Fundamentalist functions not only as a thematic critique of post-9/11 Islamophobia but also as a formal intervention that reconfigures narrative power and challenges hegemonic modes of seeing, knowing, and speaking about the Muslim “Other.”.

Özger, Pelin Doğan
This paper explores how patriarchal power relations construct the idea of “nature” in Athena Farrokhzad’s Morals According to Medea (Moral enligt Medea, 2022), an adaptation of Euripides’ classic play Medea (431 BCE). The analysis will concentrate on Medea’s subversion of patriarchal “appropriation” tactics from a feminist perspective, particularly through ideological codes embedded in the dialogues between Medea and Morality, the only other character in the play. By doing so, it seeks to understand women’s position in relation to patriarchy through a materialist feminist lens, with particular attention to the conflict between Medea and Morality. The focus will also be on how Medea challenges traditional discourses of motherhood, constructed within male-dominated societal structures. The study will further discuss the ways in which she raises her voice in resistance, both as a local and as a refugee, within the spaces where she is either confined or expelled. The discussion will be framed within the context of the theory of social relations between the sexes highlighting the specific impact of women’s resistance and militancy in examining the mechanisms of sovereignty.

Demir, Ayşegül
This study compares two traditions of verbal duelling: flyting in Scotland and karşılaşma in Türkiye. Both forms of poetic competition use insults and ridicule to entertain, while displaying the poet’s wit and cultural knowledge. Flyting is characterized by direct insults, while karşılaşma uses indirect, literary language. Despite stylistic differences, these traditions share similar purposes and motivations such as asserting poetic authority, displaying linguistic skill, and reflecting societal values. This article highlights the importance of these traditions in reflecting different cultural values and practices across different contexts.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024In Search of Scent in Theatre
Şentürk, Gamze
Theatre is an art form that brings together visual, auditory, and physical elements, establishing a strong connection between the audience and the performance. This synesthetic art employs an aesthetic language that engages all the senses, creating a unique experience for the audience, where the amalgamation of scent, sound, and visuals offers a multi-sensory journey. The audience experience plays as a holistic bodily encounter, ensuring active engagement. In theatre, the sense of smell is often overlooked. However, in recent years, experimental, innovative, and avant-garde theatrical works have opened up new possibilities for using scents on stage. Surprisingly, the use of scent in theatre can be traced back to ancient times. This study aims to explore the history of the sense of smell, its origin and its use in theatre. Furthermore, it traces how scent has influenced the theatrical experience and evolved into a fundamental element from the ancient era to the early modern period.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024New Materialist Ecopoetics in Ian Hamilton Finlay’s Little Sparta: The Garden as a Living Text
Demir, Ayşegül
This article explores Ian Hamilton Finlay’s Little Sparta through the lens of New Materialism, presenting the garden as both an aesthetic space and an active agent that redefines human-nature relations. Central to this study are concepts like agential realism, vibrant matter, and intra-action, which highlight dynamic interactions between the garden’s installations and their surroundings. Rather than being solely shaped by human intervention, the garden evolves through natural processes—seasonal shifts, weather changes, and plant growth—making it a co-creative, living text. The study emphasizes Little Sparta’s role in challenging anthropocentric views by merging poetry with natural elements, thereby advocating a holistic understanding of ecological and cultural narratives. Through the integration of art and nature, the garden dissolves boundaries, illustrating interconnectedness and fostering environmental empathy. As a space of continuous interaction, Little Sparta positions itself as an ecopoetic landscape that prompts visitors to reconsider their role within ecosystems. This approach not only enhances aesthetic and ecological engagement but also demonstrates how New Materialist principles can transform our perceptions of both art and the environment.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Necropolitics and modernity: unveiling the ‘empire’s dirty work’ in heart of darkness, a passage to india and burmese days
Demir, Ayşegül; Kaygisiz, Ismail
Abstract This article examines the complex interplay between modernity, colonialism, and necropolitics as represented in Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, A Passage to India by E.M. Forster, and Burmese Days by George Orwell. These modernist texts not only critique the dehumanization and systemic extermination justified by colonial ideologies but also highlight the ways in which colonial power uses necropolitical strategies to govern life and death. By integrating Achille Mbembe's concept of necropolitics with Michel Foucault's theory of biopower, this analysis elucidates the racial and sovereign dynamics that both underpin and challenge colonial regimes. The paper contextualizes the relationship between modernism and colonial history, highlighting how modernist narratives reflect a crisis in the colonial agenda and embody Enlightenment ideals that have shaped the socio-political landscape of empires. These narratives offer a critical view of the dichotomy between the colonizer and the colonized, emphasizing the fractured and uncertain epistemological underpinnings of imperial logic. The examination of Conrad, Forster, and Orwell focuses on the ethical and psychological turmoil from colonial dominance, probing how colonialism justifies violence and subjugation. The study reveals how colonial powers exert necropolitical control, deciding who lives and who dies—a control that extends beyond physical dominance to the psychological colonization of minds, perpetuating colonial hegemony. Ultimately, this paper shows how modernist texts critique colonial necropolitics and expose the racial prejudices and biopolitical strategies essential for maintaining colonial regimes. These texts provide profound insights into the lasting impacts of colonialism on contemporary understandings of race, sovereignty, and resistance.
