- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Geospatial evaluation of river basin small hydropower potential using AHP
Korkmaz, Meral
This study develops an integrated Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) framework to accurately identify small hydropower plants sites that support sustainable water–energy planning. The approach is applied to the Peri River Basin in Eastern Türkiye by combining multisource remote sensing datasets with a semi-automated narrow-valley detection technique to enhance the spatial precision of site selection. Nine hydrological and physiographic criteria including stream order, rainfall, slope, geology, drainage density, elevation, land use land cover, Stream Power Index SPI and Topographic Wetness Index TWI were weighted using the AHP method to generate a five-class suitability map for small hydropower plants development. A major contribution of this study is the explicit integration of valley morphology into the conventional GIS–AHP workflow, which significantly improves the identification of hydropower favorable river segments. Results indicate that approximately 3% of the basin exhibits very high suitability, while 46% is moderately suitable for run-of-river small hydropower plants development. Model validation was performed by overlaying the suitability map with the locations of existing dams/hydropower facilities, showing that current facilities are mainly located in high-suitability zones. Separately, the workflow identified 13 newly proposed high-suitability candidate dam sites (P1–P13), selected from screened suitable dam points using narrow-valley detection criteria. By minimizing ecological disturbance and aligning with watershed-based management principles, the proposed GIS-supported multicriteria method provides a transferable and cost-effective decision-support tool for small-hydropower planning in rural and mountainous basins, offering practical contributions to sustainable resource management and the water–energy nexus.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Physical education and sports teacher candidates’ perspectives on meaning in life and smartphone addiction: a mixed-method study
Şahin, Aykut; Öner, Burak
Objective – This study aims to examine the relationship between physical education and sports (PES) teacher candidates’ levels of meaning in life and smartphone addiction, and to explore in depth how this relationship occurs through qualitative data. Methods – The study was conducted using the explanatory sequential design, one of the mixed-method designs. The quantitative part of the study included 392 PES teacher candidates studying at four universities in Turkey. Quantitative data were collected using the Meaning in Life Questionnaire and the Smartphone Addiction Scale—Short Form. Results – The findings showed a low-level, negative, and significant relationship between the presence of meaning and smartphone addiction, whereas no significant relationship was found between the search for meaning and smartphone addiction. Additionally, a low-level, positive, and significant relationship was determined between the presence of meaning and the search for meaning. In the qualitative phase of the research, semi-structured interviews were conducted to support the quantitative findings. Participants’ views indicated that sports provide individuals with meaning in life and partially balance smartphone use. Conclusion – As a result, it was determined that the concept of the search for meaning is influenced by the sports context and the sample’s characteristics, and is not a direct risk factor for smartphone addiction; rather, the search for meaning may be an indicator of adaptation or personal development, not merely a lack of a meaningful life. In contrast, it was concluded that experiencing a high level of meaningful life among PES teacher candidates has a protective effect against the risk of smartphone addiction.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1The impact of narcissistic personality traits on social media interaction and body image: individual and team athletes
Kiliç, Kübra; Sezer, Burcu Sıla; Aydinli, İbrahim; Tutar, Ömer Faruk; Kiliç, Yakup
Introduction – The aim of this study is to examine the effect of narcissistic personality traits on body image through social media interaction and to comparatively evaluate these relationships in the context of athletes engaged in individual and team sports. Methods – The research group consisted of a total of 389 athletes, namely 158 female (age = 21.53 ± 3.16; years of sports experiences = 5.56 ± 4.17) and 231 male (age = 23.00 ± 5.09; years of sports experience = 8.28 ± 5.44) athletes, all residing in the Eastern Anatolia region and having a sports background. A personal information form, the “Narcissism on Social Media Scale, ” and the “Body Image Scale” were used as data collection tools. Analysis of the obtained data revealed a normal distribution; therefore, t-tests were used to compare two groups, ANOVA for comparisons of two variables, Pearson Correlation to evaluate relationships between parameters, and regression analysis to determine the effect. Results – As a result of the analyses, no significant difference was observed in terms of the type of sport variable. The study found that, among athletes engaged in individual sports, body image levels were higher in males compared to females and, in individual athletes, the narcissistic rivalry dimension was more prevalent in athletes who used social media for 5 h or more compared to those using it for less than 1 h. Multiple correlation analysis revealed no significant relationship between scale dimensions and years of sports experience. Regression analysis showed that body image level had a low but significant effect on narcissistic admiration and narcissistic rivalry. Conclusion – In conclusion, it was determined that athletes in individual sports are sensitive to demographic variables, and that the duration of social media use, in particular, is a factor that increases narcissistic competitive tendencies. The fact that years of sports experience and type of sport did not make a difference suggests that the dimensions used are shaped more by current psychosocial interactions. Indeed, the regression analysis also shows that the relationship between body image and narcissistic admiration and competition points to a weak but significant psychological interaction network.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1The mediating role of problem solving in the relationship between emotional intelligence and mental well-being
Erdoğan, Ramazan; Özcan, Büşra; Kızar, Oktay; Kızılkoca, Mustafa; Çalışır, İrem Kaptangil; Bozkurt, Eyüp; Uğurlu, Fatih Mehmet; Tan, Suriye; Koçal, Meryem
Background: This study aims to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and mental well-being among university students and to reveal the mediating role of problem-solving skills in this relationship. Methods: Of these students, 707 participated, and the Emotional Intelligence Trait Scale, the Warwick-Edinburgh Psychological Well-being Scale, and the Problem-Solving Inventory were used as data collection tools. The SPSS software was used for data analysis. Results: Emotional intelligence appears to have a significant effect on mental well-being, and emotional intelligence directly significantly predicts problem-solving skills, but mental well-being does not have a significant effect on problem-solving skills. Emotional intelligence appears to have a direct effect on problem-solving, and mental well-being mediates this effect. The explanatory power of the model is moderate in terms of the role of emotional intelligence in predicting mental well-being and more limited in terms of its role in predicting problem-solving skills. Conclusion: In conclusion, emotional intelligence strengthens individuals’ mental well-being and directly positively impacts their problem-solving skills. However, mental well-being does not play a mediating role in the problem-solving process. This suggests that the direct effect of emotional intelligence is primary in improving problem-solving skills, and mental well-being does not serve as a decisive mediating factor in this process. Therefore, interventions aimed at strengthening emotional intelligence can be effective both in enhancing individuals’ mental well-being and in directly supporting problem-solving skills.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Post-disaster psychological effects: identifying earthquake-induced trauma in athletes
Uğurlu, Fatih Mehmet; Güler, Muhammed; Albayrak, Veysel; Aygören, Caner
Natural disasters not only cause physical destruction but also lead to various psychological problems affecting the mental health of individuals. This study was conducted to determine the levels of post-earthquake trauma in athletes who experienced earthquakes and whether certain variables made a difference in this situation. The sample of the study consisted of 359 athletes living in 11 provinces affected by the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey, on February 6, 2023. Participants were reached using the Snowball Sampling Method. The Sociodemographic Information Form and the Post-Earthquake Trauma Level Determination Scale were used to collect data. As a result of the descriptive statistics, it was seen that athletes experienced above-average earthquake trauma (M = 65.84). When examined in terms of sociodemographic variables, it was found that women showed more symptoms of earthquake trauma than men, those who experienced the loss of relatives showed more symptoms than those who did not, and those who experienced the loss of a home showed more symptoms than those who did not. In conclusion, while exercise and physical activity are methods used to cope with trauma, being an athlete alone is not sufficient to cope with earthquake trauma. Women, whether athletes or not, experience more earthquake trauma than men. Losing relatives exacerbates the trauma caused by the earthquake. Furthermore, the loss of a home, which prevents individuals from meeting some basic physiological needs, is a significant factor in earthquake trauma.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Dietary exposure and health risk assessment of fumonisins through the consumption of maize and maize-based gluten-free products in individuals with celiac disease
Tuyben, Eylem Ezgi; Sevim, Sumeyra; Macit, Arife; Kizil, Mevlude
Introduction: Individuals with celiac disease (CD) must adhere to a gluten-free diet (GFD) and are therefore at high risk of fumonisin exposure due to their high consumption of maize and maize-based products. This study aimed to determine the concentrations of fumonisins (FB1, FB2, and FB3) in packaged gluten-free (GF) maize and maizebased products sold in Turkey and to assess dietary exposure and health risks in adults with CD using a probabilistic approach. Methods: Fumonisin concentrations of 51 GF products were analyzed by Enzyme-Linked Immonosorbent Assay (ELISA) and daily food consumption data were collected from 67 individuals with CD through a food frequency questionnaire. Exposure was estimated using Estimated Daily Intake (EDI) values and probabilistic risk assessment with Monte Carlo simulation. Results: The highest fumonisins concentrations were detected in the pasta/rice/bulgur group, while the flour/starch group was the food group contributed most to total fumonisins exposure due to higher consumption. Although the average EDI values were below the Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI; 1 μg/kg bw/day) set by European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) and Provisional maximum tolerable daily intakes (PMTDI; 2 μg/kg bw/day) established by Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives’s (JECFA) values, individuals at the 95th percentile approached 132.88–167.89% of the PMTDI value in the flour/starch group and 79.00–82.38% in the pasta/rice/bulgur group. Discussion: These findings highlight the need for continuous monitoring and stricter regulatory oversight and dietary guidance to protect vulnerable populations.

Background: Regular exercise during childhood impacts not only physical development but also emotional stability, social adaptation, and behavioral control. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine the effects of a 12-week introductory football training programme on violent tendencies, psychological resilience, and social appearance anxiety in children aged 12–14. Methods: A randomized controlled design was used, with 40 children assigned to an experimental group (n = 20) or a control group (n = 20). The experimental group completed 60-min football sessions three times a week, while the control group did not participate in structured activity. The program included a 20-min warm-up, technical and tactical exercises, game-based activities, and a cool-down, targeting physical, technical, tactical, and psychosocial development. Data were collected using the VTS, PRS, and SAAS scales.Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 25 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA), with mixed-design ANOVA, significance set at p < 0.05, and effect sizes reported as partial eta-squared (ηp2). Results: No significant difference was observed in violence tendency scores in the experimental group (p = 0.939). However, a decrease was observed in psychological resilience scores in comparison to pre-test values, and this decrease approached the threshold of significance with a medium effect size (p = 0.153, ηp2 = 0.053). This finding suggests that the intervention may have a limited effect on psychological resilience. While no significant change was detected in the social appearance anxiety variable in the experimental group (p = 0.120), a significant decrease in anxiety levels was observed in the control group (p = 0.029). This finding suggests that factors other than the experimental intervention may have been effective in the control group. Conclusions: In conclusion, the 12-week football training programme demonstrated no significant short-term effect on violent tendencies or social appearance concerns, but may have a temporary effect on psychological resilience. The findings indicate that the impact of sports participation on psychosocial development in children is multifaceted and contingent on individual differences.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2The effects of different exercise loads in plyometric resistance training on respiratory and hormonal levels in female volleyball players
Kavuran, Korhan; Tizar, Ercan; Oral, Diclehan; Erdoğan, Ramazan; Çelikel, Baha Engin; Ceylan, Tülay; Sezer, Süreyya Yonca; Karataş, Baykal
Background: The present study set out to ascertain the effects of combined exercises, consisting of resistance training and plyometric exercises at varying degrees of intensity, on biochemical and respiratory parameters in female volleyball players. Methods: The research group consisted of 20 professional female volleyball players who participated in national and international volleyball competitions. Participants were randomly divided into two groups: a control group (n = 10) that performed low-intensity exercises at 30%–50% intensity, and an experimental group (n = 10) that followed a high-intensity exercise programme at 60%–80% intensity. Blood samples and spirometric respiratory function values were collected before and after the 8-week exercise program. The biochemical analyses included the assessment of luteinizing hormone (LH), growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and total iron binding capacity. Respiratory function was analysed using forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), and forced expiratory flow at mid-expiration (FEF). The data were analysed using the SPSS statistical package. Results: The results demonstrated a decline in IGF-1, GH, and total iron-binding capacity levels, and an increase in LH levels, in the biochemical parameters of the control group. Additionally, FVC, FEV1, and FEF values exhibited an increase in the control group. Conversely, the experimental group demonstrated a significant increase in LH, GH, IGF-1, and total iron-binding capacity levels. With regard to respiratory parameters, an increase in FEF values was observed, whilst FVC and FEV1 values decreased. The present findings suggest that high-intensity plyometric resistance exercises have more pronounced effects on biochemical responses, but may trigger different adaptation mechanisms in respiratory capacit. The results of the study showed that there was a difference between the control group’s GH, IGF-1, FVC, and FEV1 data and the experimental group’s GH, IGF-1, FVC, and FEV1 data. Conclusions: In conclusion, plyometric resistance exercises at varying intensities influence both respiratory and biochemical parameters in female volleyball players. Accordingly, well-planned and individualised plyometric resistance training programmes are thought to enhance both the health and athletic performance of athletes.

- Derleme MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Unraveling the ecotoxicological effects of micro and nano-plastics on aquatic organisms and human health
Naz, Saima; Chatha, Ahmad Manan Mustafa; Khan, Nisar Ahmed; Ullah, Qudrat; Zaman, Faisal; Qadeer, Abdul; Khan, Ibrar Muhammad; Danabas, Durali; Kiran, Azka; Skalickova, Sylvie
Plastic pollution ranks among the most severe environmental disasters caused by humans, generating millions of tonnes of waste annually. The extensive and unregulated use of plastics has led to ecotoxicity and environmental imbalance. Microplastics (MPs) are prevalent in aquatic environments, and these MPs further degrade into even smaller particles known as nano-plastics (NPs). Both MPs and NPs impact the environment by readily absorbing organic pollutants and pathogens from their surroundings, owing to their bigger surface area to volume ratio. This review focuses on the source of origin, bioaccumulation, and potential impact of MPs and NPs on aquatic organisms and human health. Additionally, the review explores various methods employed for identification and quantification of these particles in aquatic ecosystems. Sufficient information is available on their characteristics, distributions, and effects on marine ecosystems compared with freshwater ecosystems. For plastic particles <10 μm, more toxicological effects were observed compared with larger size particles, in aquatic life. Understanding the mechanism of action and ecotoxicological effects of micro/nano-plastics on the health of aquatic life across various trophic levels, as well as human health, is of utmost importance. Large rock-slope failures are among the primary geohazards in high mountain areas. These rock avalanches and rockslides constitute most of the world’s largest landslide deposits. This study focuses on the formation and geomorphological activity of the Akdag landslide complex located on the southern slope of Mount Akdag, SW Turkey. We employed detailed mapping in the field, spatial and morphometric analysis using GIS and remote sensing technologies, and surface exposure dating with cosmogenic 36Cl to reconstruct the chronology of the landslide complex. For the analysis of cosmogenic 36Cl, we collected 18 surface samples from calcareous boulders within the landslide deposit. Our field mapping shows that the Akdag rock avalanche is a large and active slope failure developed between carbonates and flysch. The rock-avalanche deposits cover an area of 9.8 km2 and together with the primary and secondary slope failures which form the landslide complex, cover an area of 15 km2. The Akdag rock avalanche is one of the largest (3 × 108 m3) known bedrock landslides in Turkey. Cosmogenic 36Cl exposure ages indicate that the main collapse occurred at 8.3 ± 1.4 ka (2σ), followed by secondary failures. We dated one of the latter to 1.1 ± 0.2 ka (2σ). Based on field evidence, we surmise that increased water discharge in the springs along the carbonate-flysch contact zone played a key role in the Early Holocene failure.
