In this study, the impact of alpha-iron oxide (α-Fe2O3, 20-40 nm) and gamma iron oxide (γ-Fe2O3, 20-40 nm) nanoparticles (NPs) on phytoplankton species Selenastrum capricornutum and Nannochloropsis oculata was investigated Characterizations of the NPs were systematically carried out by TEM, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential, X-ray diffraction, SEM, and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy. Acute toxicity was tested between 0.2 and 50 mg/L for each NP for a period of 72 hours exposure. γ-Fe2O3 NP inhibited development of N oculata at the rate of 54% in 0.2 mg/L group with a high mortality rate of up to 82%. α-Fe2O3 NPs were less toxic that induced 97% mortality on N oculata at 10 mg/L suspensions. In contrast, α-Fe2O3 NP inhibited growth of S capricornutum strongly (73%) in 0.2 mg/L group. γ-Fe2O3 NPs showed similar growth inhibition (72%) on S capricornutum in 10 mg/L suspensions. Despite the differential effects, the results indicated acute toxicity of α-Fe2O3 and γ-Fe2O3 NPs on N oculata and S capricornutum.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ2A novel proximity graph: Circular neighborhood cell graph for histopathological tissue image analyzing
Serin, Faruk; Erturkler, Metin
The cell is the smallest unit of living beings, which has structural and functional properties. Almost all cell behaviors are regulated by various intracellular reactions initiated by the signaling. The signaling and the distance between cells influence each other. Thus, cell-location-based modeling and analyzing of histopathological tissues provide important information to the expert. In literature, methods such as distance-based threshold, K-Nearest Neighbor, Voronoi graphs, Delaunay triangulation, and colored graph have been used. However, circular neighborhood relationships of cells have not been considered by any CAD system so far despite of its crucial impact. Thus, we developed the circular neighborhood cell-graph. Histopathological images of liver were classified by using features extracted from T-Distance, K-Nearest Neighbor, Voronoi, Delaunay, and the proposed cell-graph. Then, the classification performances of the methods were compared. Experimental results show that liver tissue images can be classified with accuracy of 95.7% by using the features provided by the proposed cell-graph model.

Can, Erkan; Kızak, Volkan; Can, Şafak Seyhaneyıldız; Özçiçek, Esin
This study evaluated the potential of three essential oils (EOs) that were obtained from coriander Coriandrum sativum (CEO), linaloe tree Bursera delpechiana (BEO), and lavender Lavandula hybrida (LEO) as anesthetic agents. Convict Cichlids Amatitlania nigrofasciata (Günther 1867) were exposed to eight concentrations of anesthetic (50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 200, 250, and 300 μL/L). After exposure to the anesthetic, the fish were transferred to clean water to recover. All of the EOs produced an anesthetic effect after exposure to the compounds for 30 min at the minimal effective concentration (MEC), which was identified according to deep anesthesia (A5 < 3 min) and full recovery (R3 < 5 min) times. At 50 and 75 μL/L, the total loss of equilibrium was not observed for all tested EOs. The total loss of reflex was induced at a faster rate with higher concentrations of anesthetic in all groups. The recovery time generally increased as the concentration of the anesthetic increased. These findings suggest that CEO, BEO, and LEO are all novel potential anesthetics for aquaculture, and the optimal concentrations were identified as 150 μL/L (A5; 156 ± 1.7 s and R3; 165 ± 2.9 s), 125 μL/L (A5; 176 ± 3.5 s; R3; 125 ± 2.0 s), and 200 μL/L (A5; 20.1 ± 2.4 s and R3; 162 ± 3.4 s), respectively. When considering the active ingredients of EOs, this study also demonstrated that future studies should be focused on the major components such as linalyl acetate, 1.8-cineole, α-pinene, geraniol, and linalool. Their synergistic effects should be examined in herbal anesthetic treatments, since new commercial anesthetics will likely contain them.

Tanyol, Mehtap; Kavak, Nevroz; Torlut, Gülben
In this study, a poly(acrylonitrile-co-N-vinyl pyrrolidone)/zeolite (poly(AN-co-VP)/zeolite) composite was synthesized by in situ free radical polymerization (FRP). The structural properties of the composite were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The characterization results indicated that the composite had a homogeneous and 3-dimensional (3D) structure. The decomposition temperature and glass transition temperature (Tg ) were found as 410∘ C and 152∘ C, respectively. A poly(AN-co-VP)/zeolite composite was used to investigate the adsorption of brilliant green (BG) which is a water-soluble cationic dye. The kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics of adsorption were examined, and results showed that equilibrium data fitted the Langmuir isotherm model, and the adsorption kinetics of BG followed pseudo-second-order model. According to the thermodynamic properties, the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. Response surface methodology (RSM), which was improved by the application of the quadratic model associated with the central composite design, was employed for the optimization of the study conditions such as adsorbent mass, time, and initial dye concentration. The RSM indicated that maximum BG removal (99.91%) was achieved at the adsorbent mass of 0.20 g/50 mL, an initial BG concentration of 40.20 mg/L, and a contact time of 121.60 minutes.

Aksu, Emrah Hicazi; Kandemir, Fatih Mehmet; Yıldırım, Serkan; Küçükler, Sefa; Dörtbudak, Muhammed Baheeddin; Çağlayan, Cüneyt; Benzer, Fulya
This study aimed to investigate the effect of curcumin (CUR) on doxorubicin (DOX)-induced testicular damage in male rats. Thirty-five adult male Wistar rats were used. Control group was received saline for 7 days. CUR group received CUR for 7 days. DOX group received single dose DOX on the 5th day. DOX+ CUR-100 group received 100 mg/kg/day CUR for 7 days and DOX injection on the 5th day. DOX + CUR-200 group received 200 mg/kg/day CUR for 7 days and DOX injection on the 5th day. DOX treatment decreased in sperm motility rate, live sperm percentages, cellular antioxidants, and increased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, necrosis, degenerations, and slimming in seminiferous tubules, and DNA damages in testes by inducing oxidative stress. CUR treatment mitigated significantly these side effects when compared with DOX group in a dose-dependent manner. In conclusion, CUR treatment can be used in the mitigation of DOX-induced testicular toxicity.

- MakaleYalnız künye2018Scopus SJRQ2Mechanical and flow properties of blends of polypropylene and powder coating recyclates with and without addition of maleic anhydride
Kismet, Yilmaz; Wagner, Manfred H.
In this research, from 10% to 40% by weight of hydrolyzed powder coating recyclates were used as filler in polypropylene (PP). Firstly, PP and filler were dry-mixed and then, in order to get a homogeneous mixture, were extruded at 180°C. The resulting compounds were cooled and granulated, and by use of an injection molding machine at 180–200°C, standard tensile test bars were produced. Tensile stress, three-point bending strength, and izod impact strength of these specimens containing different types of filler and different filler concentrations were tested. The results are presented, and the effects of type and content of hydrolyzed powder coating waste on the mechanical properties of polypropylene are discussed. Also, the change in melt flow index of polypropylene as a function of filler content is analyzed. Furthermore, the bonding mechanism of filler and matrix material was examined by electron microscopy.

Yokus, Asif; Baskonus, Haci Mehmet; Sulaiman, Tukur Abdulkadir; Bulut, Hasan
In this study, with the aid of Wolfram Mathematica 11, the modified exp (−Ω(η)) -expansion function method is used in constructing some new analytical solutions with novel structure such as the trigonometric and hyperbolic function solutions to the well-known nonlinear evolutionary equation, namely; the two-component second order KdV evolutionary system. Second, the finite forward difference method is used in analyzing the numerical behavior of this equation. We consider equation (6.5) and (6.6) for the numerical analysis. We examine the stability of the two-component second order KdV evolutionary system with the finite forward difference method by using the Fourier-Von Neumann analysis. We check the accuracy of the finite forward difference method with the help of L2 and L∞ norm error. We present the comparison between the exact and numerical solutions of the two-component second order KdV evolutionary system obtained in this article which and support with graphics plot. We observed that the modified exp (−Ω(η)) -expansion function method is a powerful approach for finding abundant solutions to various nonlinear models and also finite forward difference method is efficient for examining numerical behavior of different nonlinear models.

- MakaleYalnız künye2018Scopus SJRQ2Effect of the novel biodegradable copolymer and soil salinity on the growth of corn plant
Torğut, Gülben; Beker Akbulut, Gülcin
Biodegradable and biocompatible poly (1,2-epoxy-3-phenoxy propane)-co-(ε-caprolactone) poly(EPP-co-ε-CL) copolymers were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization method at four different ε-CL ratios. Copolymers were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. To examine their possible applications in agriculture, germination test and growth analyses of corn plants were carried out. For this purpose, corn (Zea mays L. cv. “72 May 80”) was allowed to germinate under suitable conditions. Copolymers, 200 mM salt (NaCl) solution, and both copolymers and salt solution were applied to the plants and compared with the control groups. On the 21st day, all the plants were harvested and were stored at −80°C until analysis. Differences in growth parameters, lipid peroxidation degrees, pigment analysis, and total carbohydrate analysis were tested in order to put forward copolymer and NaCl sensitivity of the corn. Statistical analysis was carried out using the SPSS 17.0 software program and the results were compared with each other. These results showed that the copolymers both have a positive effect on the carbohydrate and malondialdehyde (MDA), a product of lipid peroxidation content as well as the chlorophyll content. Moreover, poly(EPP-co-ε-CL0.88) was more efficient than was the other copolymers in the improvement of the detrimental effects of salinity in increasing chlorophyll, carbohydrate, and MDA content, and growth of corn plants. As a result of the study, it was demonstrated that all of the investigated parameters were affected by the applications of salt and copolymers.
