Doğru Koca, Aslı; Gökmen, Mustafa; Yilmaz, Gülderen; Paksoy, Mehmet Yavuz
A new species, Mattiastrum pulumurense, has been described from Tunceli in eastern Türkiye. It is generally distinguished from other species (except M. racemosum var. scabridum) by a sparsely hairy or glabrescent above-ground part. It is most similar morphologically to M. longipes, M. calycinum, and Paracaryum hedgei (P. hedgei is potentially a member of the genus Mattiastrum). However, it differs from M. longipes and M. calycinum by its 3–3.5-mm-long and linear lanceolate scales, 2.5–4.5-mm-long anthers, and 10–15-mm-long styles; it differs from Paracaryum hedgei by its 3–3.5-mm-long scales, 2.5–4.5-mm-long anthers. In addition, this new species differs from M. racemosum var. scabridum by having 3–3.5-mm-long scales and no scale appendages. A description of the new species, an illustration, a comparative Table of morphological characters, detailed photographs, and a distribution map of the new species together with adjacent species were provided. In addition, the evolutionary relationships of these species were calculated using both Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analyses based on the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) and combined chloroplast data set (rps16 and trnL genes, trnL-trnF intergenic spacer). According to the phylogeny-based combined chloroplast data set, both populations of Mattiastrum pulumurense generate a monophyletic clade and are closely related to M. longipes, P. hedgei, and M. calycinum. According to ITS-based phylogeny, Mattiastrum pulumurense is closely related to Rindera tetraspis, which is seen in the paraphyletic and nested genera Mattiastrum-Paracaryum-Rindera.

Background/aim: Gastrointestinal health is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Improving nutrient absorption and energy metabolism are the critical targets for intestinal health. This study aimed to determine the effects of different boron (B) derivatives on nutrient digestibility, intestinal nutrient transporters, and lipid metabolism in rats. Materials and methods: Twenty-one rats were allocated to three groups (n = 7) as follows: (i) Control, (ii) Sodium pentaborate pentahy-drate (SPP), and (iii) boric acid (BA). The rats were fed a chow diet (AIN-93M) and supplemented with 8 mg/kg elemental B from SPP (45.2 mg/kg BW) and BA (42.7 mg/kg BW) via oral gavage every other day for 12 weeks. The nutrient digestibility of rats in each group was measured using the indigestible indicator (chromium oxide, Cr2 O3, 0.20%). At the end of the experiment, animals were decapitated by cervical dislocation and jejunum, and liver samples were taken from each animal. The nutrient transporters and lipid-regulated transcription factors were determined by RT-PCR. Results: The nutrient digestibility (except for ash) was increased by SPP and BA supplementation (p < 0.05). SPP and BA-supplemented rats had higher jejunal glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1), GLUT2, GLUT5, sodium-dependent glucose transporter 1 (SGLT1), fatty acid transport protein-1 (FATP1), and FATP4 mRNA expression levels compared to nonsupplemented rats (p < 0.0001). BA-supplemented rats had remarkably higher peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) levels than nonsupplemented rats (p < 0.0001). In contrast, sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1c (SREBP-1c), liver X receptor alpha (LxR-α), and fatty acid synthase (FAS) levels decreased by SPP supplementation compared to other groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: SPP and BA administration enhanced nutrient digestibility, intestinal nutrient transporters, and liver lipid metabolism in rats.

Medicinal plants have been used by humans for the treatment of various diseases for thousands of years from past to present. Members of the Lamiaceae family are among the most preferred medicinal plants due to the wide variety of secondary components they contain, particularly essential oils. In this review, Master’s and PhD theses and books based on ethnobotanical studies investigated between 1960 and 2021 as well as internationally recognized databases (PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science, SciFinder, Springer and Elsevier) were used to determine the medicinal uses of Lamiaceae taxa among the people in Turkey. As a result of the study, it was found that a total of 221 taxa (192 species) belonging to 29 genera, 51 of which are endemic, have medicinal/therapeutic uses. The local names of these taxa, the usage which are used among the people, the diseases in which they are used, and the geographical regions given in the present study. The genera of taxa most commonly used for medicinal purposes by the local people are Salvia (37 taxa), Sideritis (25 taxa), Stachys (22 taxa), Thymus (16 taxa) and Origanum (13 taxa). It was observed that the most frequently used two methods while preparing these plants for use was infusion (61%), and decoction (24%). Studies conducted on National (TURK, BHP), Regional (EU) and International Pharmacopoeias (WHO) and various monographs (AHP, COMISSION E, EMA, ESCOP, PDR) have revealed that there are 29 taxa included in these pharmacopoeias and monographs whose purpose of use are similar to the diseases that local people are trying to treat. Diseases that people use plants for therapeutic purposes are grouped into 12 categories. It was determined that these plants were widely used for therapeutic purposes in gastric disorders as well as otolaryngology and respiratory system diseases. This review briefly discusses whether some taxa commonly used by the local people in the treatment of diseases can be useful in the treatment of the disease in question, in the light of scientific studies.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2022Scopus SJRQ3Examination of diaphragm thickness, mobility and thickening fraction in individuals with COPD of different severity
Topcuoğlu, Ceyhun; Tütün Yümin, Eylem; Hizal, Mustafa; Konuk, Suat
Background/aim: Diaphragm thickness and mobility assessed by ultrasound in individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) reflect the function of the diaphragm. The aim of this study is to compare the diaphragm thickness, mobility, and thickening fraction in individuals with COPD of different severity and healthy individuals and examine the relationship between these parameters and pulmonary function test parameters. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional observational study design was used. Thirty individuals (mild = 11; moderate = 13; severe = 6) with COPD and 29 healthy male individuals aged between 40–75 years were included in the study. The individuals included in the study were evaluated between October 2020/May 2021. Pulmonary functions were measured with a spirometer, while diaphragm thickness, mobility, and thickening fraction were measured by ultrasound. Results: The right and left diaphragm thickness, mobility, thickness variation, thickening fraction, and mobility were lower in individuals with COPD than in healthy individuals (p < 0.05). The left Functional Residual Capacity (FRC) diaphragm thickness, right Total Lung Capacity (TLC), and FRC diaphragm thickness were higher in mild COPD than moderate COPD and moderate COPD than severe COPD (p < 0.05). The right diaphragmatic thickening fraction and rate were higher in mild COPD than in moderate and severe COPD (p < 0.05). The left mobility was lower in severe COPD than in mild COPD (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Diaphragm ultrasound parameters decrease as disease severity increases in individuals with COPD. We think that adding diaphragm ultrasound parameters together with pulmonary function test to the evaluation of individuals with COPD will provide additional contributions to determining the course of the disease.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ3Lutein/zeaxanthin isomers regulate neurotrophic factors and synaptic plasticity in trained rats
Orhan, Cemal; Erten, Füsun; Er, Beşir; Tuzcu, Mehmet; Şahin, Nurhan; Durmaz Kurşun, Öznur Ece; Juturu, Vijaya; Şahin, Kazim
Background/aim: This study was conducted to elucidate the effects of lutein/zeaxanthin isomers (L/Zi) on lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, NF-κB/Nrf2 pathways, and synaptic plasticity proteins in trained rats. Materials and methods: Wistar rats were distributed into four groups: 1) control, 2) L/Zi: rats received L/Zi at the dose of 100 mg/kg by oral gavage, 3) exercise, 4) exercise+L/Zi: rats exercised and received L/Zi (100 mg/kg) by oral gavage. The duration of the study was eight weeks. Results: Exercise combined with L/Zi reduced lipid peroxidation and improved antioxidant enzyme activities of muscle and cerebral cortex in rats (p < 0.001). In the Exercise + L/Zi group, muscle and cerebral cortex Nrf2 and HO-1 levels increased, while NF-κB levels decreased (p <0.001). Also, L/Zi improved BDNF, synapsin I, SYP, and GAP-43 levels of the cerebral cortex of trained rats (p < 0.001). The highest levels of BDNF, synapsin SYP, and GAP-43 in the cerebral cortex were determined in the Exercise+L/Zi group. Conclusion: These results suggested that exercise combined with L/Zi supplementation might be effective to reduce neurodegeneration via improving neurotrophic factors and synaptic proteins, and oxidative capacity in the cerebral cortex.

Kawarty, Awara Mohammed A.M.A.; Behçet, Lütfi; Çakilcioğlu, Uğur
This study aims to identify wild plants used for medical purposes by local people of the Ballakayati district of Erbil in North Iraq, and to determine the local names and uses of those plants. The study was carried out for approximately 3 years between 2016 and 2018. During this period of time, 85 plant specimens were collected. Demographic characteristics of the participants, names of the local plants, used parts of these plants and their preparation methods were investigated and recorded. In the literature analysis of the plants used in this study, 85 plants were found to be used for medicinal purposes while 3 plants were not found in the literature records. Local plant names differ due to local dialects in North Iraq. Locals benefit from the wild plants growing in their districts. In this area, it was found that locals use 85 plants from 38 families for curative purposes. The medicinal plants were used for the treatment of many diseases, mostly for the treatment of a cold, shortness of breath, and heart and gastrointestinal diseases. It was determined that the plants we identified in this study were used directly or as infusion or decoction. The most considerable medicinal plants were Mentha longifolia (L.) L. subsp. noeana (Briq.) Briq. (UV:0.38), Urtica dioica L. (UV:0.38). Furthermore, plants used for medicinal purposes are dried and stored for using them in winter. The medicinal use of Rhaponticum repens (L.) Hidalgo and Tanacetum polycephalum Sch.Bip. subsp. argyrophyllum (K.Koch) Podlech. that we found in this area were recorded for the first time. Different use of those plants were observed in this study.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2019Scopus SJRQ3Hybrid parliamentary optimization and big bang-big crunch algorithm for global optimization
Kiziloluk, Soner; Özer, Ahmet Bedri
Researchers have developed different metaheuristic algorithms to solve various optimization problems. The efficiency of a metaheuristic algorithm depends on the balance between exploration and exploitation. This paper presents the hybrid parliamentary optimization and big bang-big crunch (HPO-BBBC) algorithm, which is a combination of the parliamentary optimization algorithm (POA) and the big bang-big crunch (BB-BC) optimization algorithm. The intragroup competition phase of the POA is a process that searches for potential points in the search space, thereby providing an exploration mechanism. By contrast, the BB-BC algorithm has an effective exploitation mechanism. In the proposed method, steps of the BB-BC algorithm are added to the intragroup competition phase of the POA in order to improve the exploitation capabilities of the POA. Thus, the proposed method achieves a good balance between exploration and exploitation. The performance of the HPO-BBBC algorithm was tested using well-known mathematical test functions and compared with that of the POA, the BB-BC algorithm, and some other metaheuristics, namely the genetic algorithm, multiverse optimizer, crow search algorithm, dragonfly algorithm, and moth-flame optimization algorithm. The HPO-BBBC algorithm was found to achieve better optimization performance and a higher convergence speed than the above-mentioned algorithms on most benchmark problems.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2019Scopus SJRQ2The epiphytic bryophyte vegetation of Kamilet Valley (Artvin, Turkey)
Alataş, Mevlüt; Batan, Nevzat; Ezer, Tülay
In this study, the vegetation of epiphytic bryophytes in the Kamilet Valley and its surroundings (Arhavi, Artvin) was investigated. The study area is located within the borders of the Eastern Black Sea Mountains and is one of the 122 important plant areas in Turkey. The investigation of epiphytic bryophyte communities was carried out in 2016 during different vegetation periods according to Braun-Blanquet’s phytosociological methodology. Phytosociological data obtained from 65 relevés were ordinated using detrended correspondence analysis (DECORANA) and classified using two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN). Consequently, six epiphytic bryophyte communities new to Turkey were determined with TWINSPAN and DECORANA: Leucobryo-Tetraphidetum pellucidae, Anomodonto attenuati-Neckeretum crispae, Frullanio tamarisci-Exsertothecetum crispae, Ulotetum crispae, Anomodonto attenuati-Neckeretum crispae-leucodontetosum sciuroidis, and Ulotetum crispae-isothecietosum alopecuroidis. All syntaxa are presented by analyzing them in terms of their ecological and floristic classifications.
