Optimization and Kinetic Study of Manganese Leaching from Pyrolusite Ore in Hydrochloric Acid Solutions with Oxalic Acid

    Karacahan, Mehmet Kayra

The leaching behavior of pyrolusite minerals was examined in hydrochloric acid solutions, including oxalic acid, to evaluate the influence of various experimental conditions. The optimum parameters for the leaching process were found in the first stage, and the process's kinetics were assessed in the second. The concentrations of oxalic acid, hydrochloric acid, and temperature were chosen as independent variables in the optimization experiments, with the central composite design used to analyze the experimental data. The optimum concentrations for oxalic acid, hydrochloric acid, and temperature were determined to be 0.75 mol/L, 1.2 mol/L, and 60 °C, respectively. The leaching rate was determined to be 97.4% for 120 min of response time in optimum situations. The kinetic assessment experiments studied the effects of solid/liquid ratio, particle size, stirring speed, and temperature on the manganese leaching rate from pyrolusite. In the studies, the leaching rate was shown to rise with increasing temperature and stirring speed, as well as with decreasing particle size and solid/liquid ratio. The kinetic analysis revealed that the leaching kinetics matched the mixed kinetic model, and a mathematical model for the leaching process was developed. This process's activation energy was determined to be 29.05 kJ/mol. Graphical Abstract: (Figure presented.)

Investigation of Leaching Kinetics of Molybdenum from MoO3 Concentrate in Ammonia–Ammonium Nitrate Solutions

    Karacahan, Mehmet Kayra

MoO3 is a widely accessible foundation material and the primary compound used to produce numerous molybdenum products. The ore was first roasted, and the leaching behavior of concentrated molybdenite mineral was assessed. The optimal conditions for the leaching process were identified in the second step, and in a subsequent stage, the process' kinetics were assessed. Ammonia and ammonium nitrate concentration were used as independent variables in the trials, and the central composite design approach was used to analyze the results. At the conclusion of the tests, the optimum concentrations of ammonia and ammonium nitrate were found to be 2.42 mol/L and 1.86 mol/L, respectively. On the rate at which molybdenum leached from MoO3, the influences of temperature, stirring speed, solid-to-liquid ratio, and particle size were investigated. It was found that the leaching rate increased when temperature and stirring speed increased, along with decreasing the solid-to-liquid ratio and particle size. Leaching efficiency of molybdenum (93%) such as temperature 20 °C, 1.859 mol/L ammonium nitrate concentration, 2.419 mol/L ammonia concentration, solid/liquid ratio 6/100 g/mL, stirring speed 400 rpm, and average particle size 0.115 mm optimum conditions have been achieved. The kinetic study proposed a mathematical model for the leaching process, which revealed that the leaching kinetics matched the Avrami model. This process' activation energy was determined to be 22.66 kJ/mol. Calcium molybdate is used in various fields, such as construction, transportation, anti-corrosion pigments, and flame retardants. Optimization of process parameters and kinetic modelling for leaching of copper from oxidized copper ore in nitric acid solutions

TANAYDIN, Mehmet Kayra; TANAYDIN, Zümra Bakıcı; DEMIRKIRAN, Nizamettin

The leaching behavior of Tunceli malachite mineral was investigated in nitric acid solutions by two steps to evaluate the effect of various experimental parameters. In the first step, the optimal conditions for the leaching process were determined, while in the second step, a kinetic evaluation for the process was performed. In the optimization experiments, the concentration of nitric acid, temperature, stirring speed, and solid-to-liquid ratio were selected as the independent variables, and the central composite design method (CCD) was applied to the experimental data. At the end of the experiments, the optimal values for the concentration of nitric acid, temperature, solid-to-liquid ratio and stirring speed were determined to be 0.5 mol/L, 50 °C, 0.004 g/mL and 500 r/min, respectively. Under the optimal conditions, the leaching rate was found to be 99% for 120 min of reaction time. In the kinetic evaluation tests, the effects of the concentration of nitric acid, temperature, stirring speed, solid-to-liquid ratio and particle size on the leaching rate of copper from malachite were investigated. In these tests, it was determined that the leaching rate increased with the increase in the temperature, acid concentration and stirring speed, and with the decrease in the particle size and solid-to-liquid ratio. In consequence of the kinetic analysis, it was observed that the leaching kinetics followed the mixed kinetic model, and a mathematical model for the leaching process was introduced. The activation energy for this process was calculated to be 36.23 kJ/mol.

Determination of Optimum Process Conditions by Central Composite Design Method and Examination of Leaching Kinetics of Smithsonite Ore Using Nitric Acid Solution

Tanaydın, Mehmet Kayra; Bakıcı Tanaydın, Zümra; Demirkıran, Nizamettin

The leaching behavior of Tunceli smithsonite ore in nitric acid was evaluated in two study steps including optimization of leaching process and kinetics modeling. The individual and synergistic effects of effective parameters such as nitric acid concentration, solid-to-liquid ratio, stirring speed, and temperature on the dissolution rate of zinc were investigated using central composite design. Four factors including temperature (30–50 °C), nitric acid concentration (0.2–0.5 mol/L), stirring speed (350–600 rpm), and solid-to-liquid ratio (0.004–0.01 g/L) were investigated. The dissolution percent of zinc (97%) was obtained in 120 min of leaching time: acid concentration 0.5 mol/L, temperature 50 °C, stirring speed 500 rpm, and solid–liquid ratio 2/500 g/mL at the optimum conditions obtained using the central composite design. The dissolution kinetics of smithsonite was examined according to heterogenous models and it was found that the dissolution rate was controlled by ash layer diffusion process. It was found that the leaching rate increased with increasing temperature, stirring speed, and acid concentration as well as decrescent particle size and solid/liquid ratio. The trial data were analyzed by statistical and graphical methods and the activation energy of this leaching process was determined to be 28.63 kJ·mol−1. A novel macrofungus for the biosorption of hazardous dye and its reuse potential: Experimental design approach using response surface methodology

Ince, Olcay Kaplan; Alp, Hevidar; Ince, Muharrem; Onal, Ali

In the present study, a novel biosorbent, namely Agaricus campestris, was used for the removal of Methylene Blue (MB) from an aqueous medium. The biosorbent was characterized using fourier-transform infrared spectrometer spectra, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray, and thermogravimetric analysis. The influence of important process parameters including pH (4–7), temperature (25°C–35°C), contact time (15–25 min), and biosorbent amount (40–80 mg) on the uptake of MB solution were also optimized, which significantly affected the removal efficiency of MB. A central composite design (CCD) combined with response surface modeling (RSM) was carried out to maximize MB removal by A. campestris for the adsorption process. A regression model was derived using RSM to predict the responses and analysis of variance (ANOVA), and to check model adequacy lack of fit test was used. The A. campestris adsorption capacity was determined as 24.2 mg g–1. The ANOVA showed a high coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.9987). This study clearly revealed that RSM was one of the most effective and appropriate method for the optimization of operating conditions. The possibility of reusing A. campestris was also investigated and, as a result, it was found quite possible and showed high performance in the recovery of MB.

    Tanyol, Mehtap; Tevkur, Servet

In the present work, the process of electrocoagulation was utilized to remove total organic carbon (TOC) and color from slaughterhouse wastewaters and response surface methodology (RSM) inte-grated central composite design (CCD) was applied to optimize the operating factors of the pro-cess, that used iron electrodes. The optimal values for the removal of TOC and color were achieved with the quadratic regression model obtained from CCD. The optimum points for current density, inter-electrode distance, and reaction time obtained by the numerical analysis were 22.97 mA/m2, 12.03 mm, and 78.95 min for TOC, while these values were 23.08 mA/m2, 15.84 mm, and 80.77 min for color, respectively. At the optimum values, maximum TOC and color removal were obtained as 94.77% and 99.32%, respectively. The results indicated that the electrocoagulation process is an effective treatment technique for the removal of TOC and color from slaughterhouse wastewaters.

Optimization of the adsorption of methyl green dye on almond shells using central composite design

    Tanaydin, Mehmet Kayra; Goksu, Ali

Almond shells, known as the agricultural industry’s waste, were utilized to adsorb methyl green dye from aqueous solutions. The effects of initial concentration (2–10 mg/L), the adsorbent dosage (0.1–0.5 g), shaking speed (150–250 rpm), pH (4–7), temperature (20°C–50°C), and particle size (137–892 μm) on methyl green adsorption on the almond shell were examined. The response surface methodology was used to optimize the methyl green dye’s adsorption process using the almond shell. The central composite design was utilized to obtain optimum experimental conditions. Performed experiments obtained the isotherm data, and it was analyzed by utilizing the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. The isotherm data can be fitted well by the Langmuir model. The pseudo-second-order model can anticipate the adsorption kinetics. The thermodynamic parameters such as ΔG° ΔH°, and ΔS° were calculated and found to be –2.878, 42.12 kJ/mol, and 0.151 kJ/mol K, respectively. These values demonstrated that the present adsorption process was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic in the temperature scope of (20°C–50°C). This study indicates that almond shells were considered an efficient adsorbent to remove from the aqueous solutions. The maximum adsorption capacity of the almond shell (1.1 mg/g) was obtained. In this system, the almond shell’s pre-activation process was not preferred because it will create an extra cost. Adsorption kinetics studies showed that the model is represented as a pseudo-second-order of adsorption data.

Modeling and optimization of indigo carmine adsorption from aqueous solutions using a novel polymer adsorbent: RSM-CCD

Torğut, Gülben; Tanyol, Mehtap; Meşe, Zeynep

A novel adsorbent was prepared via the free radical copolymerization of 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and acrylonitrile (AN) using 2,2′-azobisizobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator at 65 °C. Poly(DMAEMA-co-AN) was characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and SEM techniques. Its thermal properties were determined by TGA and DSC. The copolymer was used to remove indigo carmine (IC) from aqueous solutions. The optimum IC removal percentage was determined to be 99.53% with poly(DMAEMA-co-AN) of 0.10 g/100 mL, contact time of 31.37 min, 46.58 mg/L initial concentration of IC using a central composite design in response surface methodology. The high maximum adsorption capacity (196.07 mg/g) proved that poly(DMAEMA-co-AN) can be used as a promising adsorbent for the removal of IC from wastewaters.

Optimization of Cadmium Removal from Water by Hydroxyapatite Using Experimental Design Methodology

Ince, Olcay Kaplan; Ince, Muharrem; Karaaslan, Nagihan M.; Yonten, Vahap

The presence of cadmium in water is a serious threat to the environment. The removal of cadmium using hydroxyapatite as an adsorbent was studied in an aqueous system. Hydroxyapatite was prepared to process the adsorption of cadmium from aqueous solution. Experimental design methodology and response surface methodology (RSM) with a quadratic model associated with central composite design was used to optimize the pH, initial heavy metal concentration, final volume, and adsorbent dosage for the removal of cadmium. Analysis of variance identified significant factors on each parameter. RSM indicated that a pH of 8.5, a sample volume of 166 mL, an adsorbent of dosage 0.57 g, and a contact time of 82 min were optimal for the adsorption of Cd(II). Under these conditions, the removal of Cd(II) was 895 mg g(-1).
