- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ1Sleep quality in children with epilepsy and their mothers: A cross-sectional study
Veziroğlu, H.; Kemer, D.
Background The aim of this study is to evaluate the sleep quality of children with epilepsy and their mothers, and to identify the factors affecting sleep quality. Methods The sample comprised 103 mothers of children with epilepsy aged 318 years. Data were collected during face-to-face interviews using the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), the Mann-Whitney U test, and correlation analysis. Results According to PSQI, 76.7% of mothers were found to have poor sleep quality. The mean total CSHQ score was 49.99 ± 7.60, indicating clinically significant sleep problems among the children. Mothers' PSQI total scores were significantly associated with income status, number of children, duration of epilepsy, and time spent in digital environments (p < 0.05). Children's CSHQ total scores were significantly associated with age at first seizure, seizure frequency, occurrence of seizures during the last three months, presence of nocturnal seizures, number of antiepileptic drugs used, and ownership of a phone/computer (p < 0.05). Conclusion It was found that children with epilepsy experienced sleep problems related to bedtime resistance and daytime sleepiness, and that their mothers had poor sleep quality. Therefore, the development of supportive intervention programs is recommended to prevent and manage sleep problems in children with epilepsy and their mothers. Implications to practice Multidisciplinary collaboration and nurse-led interventions should be implemented to promote sleep health and improve the quality of life of children with epilepsy and their families.

Kasimoğlu, Necla; Gürarslan Baş, Nazan
Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between parental attitudes toward childhood epilepsy and spiritual orientations. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted online between May and July 2022 with 417 parents residing in the eastern part of Turkey. Data were collected using a descriptive information form, the Social Attitudes Scale toward Childhood Epilepsies, and the Spiritual Orientation Scale. The obtained data were analyzed using the SPSS software package, employing descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, as well as inferential statistics including independent samples t-test, ANOVA, multiple linear regression and correlation tests. Results: The Total Social Attitudes Scale Score toward Childhood Epilepsies was calculated as 45.10 ± 7.81, and the Spiritual Orientation Scale Score was 89.88 ± 30.30 for parents with an average age of 36.64 ± 8.26. It was found statistically significant and high (p > 0.05) for parents who are female, have a higher level of education, and have previously received education about epilepsy regarding both the Total Social Attitudes Scale Score toward Childhood Epilepsies and the Spiritual Orientation Scale Score. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the Total Social Attitudes Scale Score toward Childhood Epilepsies and the Spiritual Orientation Scale Score. Conclusion: According to the findings of the research, parents' attitudes towards childhood epilepsy are positive, and their spiritual orientation levels are high. As parents' spiritual orientation levels increase, their positive attitudes towards childhood epilepsy also increase.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between loneliness, hopelessness and social support experienced by mothers with disabled children. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 106 mothers with disabled children. The data was collected by compiling the Personal Information Form and by applying three main scales: the UCLA Loneliness Scale (UCLA-LS), the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). The data obtained was analyzed using the number, percentage, mean, correlation, T test, Anova and Mann Whitney U tests. The UCLA-LS mean score of the mothers was 50.56 ± 11.94, the BHS mean score was 10.78 ± 4.93 and the MSPSS mean score was 40.97 ± 13.86. The results showed a positive correlation between the mean scores of the loneliness and hopelessness scale, and a negative correlation between the mean scores of the loneliness and hopelessness scale and the mean MSPSS score (p <.05). As a result of the research findings, mothers with disabled children experienced loneliness and hopelessness and did not receive sufficient social support.

Arıkan, Duygu; Gürarslan Baş, Nazan; Kurudirek, Fatma; Baştopcu, Ayşe; Uslu, Hakan
Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effect of therapeutic clowning on handwashing technique and microbial colonization in preschool children. Design: This randomized controlled trial was conducted using pre-test and post-test experimental and control groups. Methods: The study was conducted between March and June 2016 in two kindergartens in eastern Turkey. The study was completed with a total of 195 students, including 90 students in the experimental group and 105 students in the control group. A questionnaire was used for data collection. This questionnaire included sections about the subjects’ descriptive characteristics and the results of the bacterial cultures of their hand swabs. For the collection of these swabs, the subjects were informed in advance, and samples were collected at predetermined times. The swabs were analyzed to determine the bacterial colonization of the subjects’ hands. Clowns and video activities were used as intervention tools in the study. Findings: In the post-test, the microbial growth was ≤103 in 68.9% and >103 in 31.1% of the subjects in the experimental group. In contrast, the growth was ≤103 in 34.3% and >103 in 65.7% of the control group subjects. The difference in the post-test microbial growths of the two groups was statistically significant (p <.000). Conclusions: The hygienic handwashing technique taught in the therapeutic clowning and videos reduced the bacterial colonization on the preschool children's hands by 50%. Moreover, this method was effective in reducing the growth rate of coliform bacteria that indicate undesirable, poor hygiene of the hands. Clinical Relevance: Considering these results, we recommend that pediatric healthcare professionals use entertaining methods such as those involving clowns to teach and guide children regarding hygienic handwashing techniques.

Arikan, Duygu; Saban, Fatma; Bas, Nazan Gurarslan
Objective: This research is done with the aim of determining hospital and health care satisfaction levels of the parents with inpatient children. Methods: Research was carried out descriptively at a university hospital after necessary permissions were taken from institutions. Parents whose children would stay at hospital between April-June 2012 formed the structure of the research and without using any sampling method, 171 volunteer parents were included in research. In collecting data, PedsQL Health Care Satisfaction Scale and descriptive information forms were used. In the statistical evaluation of data percentage distributions, means, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis, Mann Whitney U test and alpha coefficient were used. Results: It was determined that there is statistically important difference between communication and technical skill sub-dimensions (p<0,05). It was confirmed that the longer the child hospitalized, general satisfaction of the parents who cannot supply their own necessities (p<0,05), related to moderate technical skill and emotional requirement sub-dimensions decreases (p<0.05). Besides, lower emotional satisfaction subdimension scores for those who had no accommodation (p<0,05), decreased general satisfaction level of the parents who had another child at home (p<0,05). Also family participation and general satisfaction subdimension scores of the parents whose child incurred financial burden was relatively low (p<0,05). Conclusion: Parents were not satisfied with health care services they received. Accordingly, it is offered that the nurses should have a right to make decisions on the procedures related to families' inpatient children and let them be with their children during the procedures and give them information on the procedures that will be applied on the children.
