Linking microstructural modifications of Ho2O3-doped borotellurite glasses to the enhancement of critical properties: Synthesis, structural, physical, and experimental Gamma-Ray and neutron transmissioncharacteristics

Kilic, G.; Ilik, E.; Kavaz, E.; Durmus, Hasan; Güler, Ömer; Birdogan, Selcuk; ALMisned, Ghada; Tekin, H.O.

This study investigates the effects of holmium oxide (Ho2O3) microparticle reinforcement on the structural, physical, and radiation shielding properties of borotellurite glasses with compositions ranging from 0 to 12 mol% Ho2O3. X-ray diffraction and TEM analyses confirmed the retention of amorphous structure across all samples, with localized short-range ordering observed at higher Ho contents. Glass density increased from 4.598 to 5.202 g/cm3 with increasing Ho2O3, while molar volume expanded from 27.94 to 30.61 cm3/mol, and oxygen packing density decreased from 0.605 to 0.551 g/cm3, indicating network expansion due to the substitution of lighter Li + ions by heavier Ho3+. Gamma-ray shielding properties significantly improved with Ho incorporation. At 81 keV, the linear attenuation coefficient increased from 8.33 to 13.70 cm−1, and the mass attenuation coefficient improved from 2.066 to 2.735 cm2/g. Moreover, effective atomic number rose from 44.9 to 52.5 and half-value layer decreased by 20.5% at 383 keV, and buildup factors dropped by up to 34% at 0.5 MeV. Neutron dose absorption improved, and the fast neutron removal cross-section increased from 0.1066 to 0.1113 cm−1. These results confirm that Ho2O3 contributes as a highly effective multifunctional dopant, significantly enhancing both gamma-ray and neutron shielding performance of borotellurite glasses, one of the most promising glass systems for advanced radiation protection applications.

ALMisned, Ghada; Susoy, Gulfem; Baykal, Duygu Sen; Alkarrani, Hessa; Güler, Ömer; Issa, Shams A.M.; Zakaly, Hesham M.H.; Tekin, H.O.

This study explores the gamma-ray and neutron shielding properties and mechanical performance of eight Fe-based alloys with varying elemental compositions and densities. Different parameters such as mass attenuation coefficients, linear attenuation coefficients, half-value layer, tenth-value layer, mean free path, fast neutron removal cross-sections, transmission factors were analysed using PHITS and Phy-X/PSD codes. Moreover, elastic modulus values were calculated for each alloy sample. Our results reveal that the S9 alloy, with high density and tungsten contribution, exhibited superior shielding and mechanical properties, achieving the lowest TF, HVL, and TVL values. In contrast, the low-density S1 alloy performed weakest, reflecting its lighter elemental composition. Intermediate alloys like MAR-302 and Cupero-Nickel showed balanced performance, suitable for moderate shielding needs. Strong correlations between elemental compositions, particularly high-Z elements like tungsten and boron, and shielding efficiency were observed. It can be concluded that optimizing elemental composition and density is critical for designing alloys with enhanced multifunctional properties.

ALMisned, Ghada; Susoy, Gulfem; Baykal, Duygu Sen; Kilic, G.; Güler, Ömer; Tekin, H.O.

This comprehensive study investigates the radiation attenuation properties of various bismuth (Bi) and lead (Pb) based alloys, with a focus on identifying superior shielding materials for nuclear safety and industrial radiation protection. The research encompasses an in-depth analysis of seven alloys, namely GTSB5, Sn%40Bi, Bi50Sn50, A1, PbAl-4, Safe Alloy, and P1, assessing their efficacy in gamma-ray and neutron attenuation. Utilizing some computational tools, various parameters such as mass and linear attenuation coefficients, half and tenth value layer values, effective atomic and electron numbers, buildup factors, and transmission values were evaluated. Our findings highlight Alloy P1's outstanding performance, attributed to its high density (11.05 g/cm3) and optimized elemental composition, including Silver (Ag). In addition, P1 demonstrates exceptional gamma-ray attenuation across multiple energy spectra and superior neutron shielding capabilities, evidenced by its significant fast neutron removal cross-section (∑R, 0.12003 1/cm). The study revealed that the addition of Ag enhances the photon and beta particle absorption capacity, positioning P1 as a promising material in radiation shielding applications. The correlations between alloy density and gamma-ray shielding properties were particularly notable, with P1's density contributing to its enhanced attenuation capabilities. Furthermore, P1's lower half value layers (1.14469 cm) and tenth value layers (3.80256 cm) at 15 MeV indicate its efficiency in reducing radiation intensity with minimal material thickness.

Fabrication and structural, physical, and nuclear radiation shielding properties for Oxide Dispersion-Strengthened (ODS) alloys through Erbium (III) oxide, Samarium (III) oxide, and Praseodymium (III) oxide into 316L matrix

Güler, Seval Hale; Güler, Ömer; Kavaz, E.; ALMisned, Ghada; Albayrak, M. Gökhan; Issa, Bashar; Tekin, H.O.

We report a comprehensive investigation on customization process of Oxide Dispersion-Strengthened alloys through Sm2O3, Pr2O3, and Er2O3 incorporation into 316L stainless steel matrix in terms of a desired enhancement in structural, physical, and nuclear radiation shielding properties. Oxide powders are incorporated into 316L stainless steel powder all with the same purity of 99.5%. These were Erbium oxide (Er2O3), Praseodymium oxide (Pr2O3), and Samarium oxide (Sm2O3). First, X-Ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscope/Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses are conducted in order to investigate their physical and structural properties. Next, two different experimental setups are employed using a133Ba and 241Am/Be sources for the measurements of gamma-ray and neutron transmission properties of Oxide Dispersion-Strengthened alloys. The maximum density increment is achieved through Er2O3 compared to other reinforced oxides. The detector counting value reached its minimum level when a 5% Er2O3 oxide dispersion was introduced into the 316L SS matrix. Similarly, the most significant degree of photon absorption, the highest values of mass attenuation coefficient, lowest half value layer, and most effective atomic number, were all attained by the same sample. Based on the findings derived from the investigation, it can be concluded that incorporating Er2O3 oxide into 316L steel can be considered as a viable option in terms of enhancing the critical properties of Oxide Dispersion-Strengthened alloys for extreme conditions such as nuclear reactors and other similar fields, where the behavioral attributes of the utilized materials are at utmost importance.

Exploring critical behavioral differences in physical, structural, and nuclear radiation attenuation properties of produced High Entropy Alloy (HEA) and Refractory-High Entropy Alloy (RHEA) samples

Güler, Seval Hale; Güler, Ömer; Kavaz, E.; Almisned, Ghada; Issa, Bashar; Tekin, H.O.

Refractory-High entropy alloys (RHEAs) are known for their exceptional mechanical and radiation-resistant properties, making them promising materials for use in nuclear reactors. Their high entropy composition, which consists of multiple elements in roughly equal proportions, can create a stable microstructure that withstands high levels of radiation damage. The objective of this work is to further our comprehension of the unique behavioral, physical, structural, and nuclear radiation attenuation characteristics shown by High-Entropy Alloys (HEA) and Refractory-High entropy alloy (RHEA) materials. Accordingly, two high entropy alloy (HEA) samples through two different compositions were produced. The first composition under consideration is the typical high-entropy alloy (HEA) defined as MnCrFeNiCoMo0.5. The second composition under consideration is a refractory high entropy alloy (RHEA) characterized by the following elemental composition: TiZrNbHfVTa0.1. SEM and EDX analyses were conducted in terms of determining their physical and structural attributes. Next, a133Ba radioisotope together with a HPGe detector were utilized for gamma-ray transmission experiments. Finally, a241Am/Be source and a gas proportional detector were used for neutron absorption experiments for HEA and RHEA samples. The alloy structures displayed a unique degree of uniformity. Throughout the RHEA phase, the incorporation of refractory elements did not provide any discernible adverse impacts on the physical stability. The counting spectrum provided a clear explanation of the gamma ray absorption features shown by the RHEA (R) sample, highlighting its exceptional absorption properties. Regarding the absorption properties of neutrons, it was observed that RHEA had a comparatively reduced amount of absorption. Therefore, it can be concluded that the basic structure of RHEA grants it superior gamma-ray attenuation qualities compared to HEA. It can be concluded that RHEA demonstrates superior applicability as a material in comparison to HEA, especially in situations involving the use of fuel rods, where maintaining of neutron quantity has paramount importance for achieving optimum neutron activation.

Güler, Ömer; Kilic, G.; Kavaz, E.; Ilik, E.; Guler, Seval Hale; ALMisned, Ghada; Tekin, H.O.

Many oxide additives have historically been used to enhance the radiation shielding properties of glasses, yet the potential of high-entropy oxides (HEOs), which have gained popularity in material science for their unique properties, has not been explored in this context. This study is the first to investigate the radiation shielding capabilities of Zinc-Tellurite glass infused with High Entropy Oxide (HEO), specifically utilizing the novel attributes of a synthesized TiZrNbHfTa. In this study, the nuclear shielding properties of newly fabricated Zinc-Tellurite glasses doped with TiZrNbHfTaOx with a composition (25ZnO·75TeO2)100-x. (TiZrNbHfTaOx)x (x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 mol%) were studied. Through the synthesis of a TiZrNbHfTa HEA and its integration into glass structure, we have developed a series of novel materials with enhanced protective properties against both gamma-ray and neutron radiation. Experimental results demonstrate that the HEO-infused glass, particularly the HEC1-4 composition, significantly surpasses traditional shielding materials in neutron attenuation, evidenced by its superior effective neutron removal cross-section. Additionally, the HEC1-4 glass demonstrates improved gamma-ray shielding capabilities, with increased mass attenuation coefficients and decreased half-value layers, indicating a higher capacity for photon interaction and absorption. It can be concluded that the incorporation of High Entropy Alloys into glass matrices not only opens a new frontier in radiation shielding materials but also provides a versatile and effective solution with considerable potential for enhancing safety measures in radiation-prone environments.

Gul, Ali Oktay; Kavaz, Esra; Basgoz, Oykum; Guler, Omer; ALMisned, Ghada; Bahceci, Ersin; Albayrak, M. Gokhan; Tekin, H.O.

High-Entropy Alloys (HEAs) are regarded as potential structural materials for fusion and next-generation fission reactors, which will be required to fulfil growing nuclear energy demands. In this study, a HEA-composite was synthesized by adding B4C to an HEA containing Ni. The microstructure of the obtained HEA-composite was examined and the changes in its mechanical properties were revealed. Additionally, the nuclear radiation shielding properties of the Ni-containing HEA, and the HEA-composite are investigated using experimental and theoretical methods. Our initial findings showed that with the addition of 2.5% B4C to the alloy, the hardness increased more than two times. The addition of B4C to the HEA matrix resulted in a more than 90% and a nearly twofold increase in compressive strength. The shielding qualities of gamma-ray and neutron radiation were investigated using experimental and theoretical approaches. Our findings demonstrated that increasing the B4C reinforcement considerably enhanced the composite material's neutron attenuation capabilities. On the other hand, no significant change in the gamma-ray shielding characteristics of HEA and HEA-composite samples was observed. The gamma-ray shielding characteristics of HEA and HEA-composite samples were compared to those of other alloy shields and commercial products. Our findings indicate that both HEA and HEA-composite samples exhibit superior gamma-ray shielding characteristics when compared to the control samples. It can be concluded that increasing B4C reinforcement may be a multifunctional tool in terms of improving the mechanical properties as well as neutron attenuation properties for advanced applications in nuclear radiation facilities and next-generation fission reactors. Additionally, due to their promising material features and higher gamma-ray shielding capabilities compared to other kinds of alloys and commercial shields, HEAs may be beneficial materials.

The effect of curcumin on lipid peroxidation and selected antioxidants in irradiated rats

Ozcelik, Mehtap; Erişir, Mine; Guler, Osman; Baykara, Murat; Kirman, Esra

The effect of irradiation on oxidants and antioxidants in selected tissues and a possible protective effect of curcumin on these indices were investigated. A total of 28 rats were divided into 3 groups; group 1 was control; group 2 was the irradiation group, saline was administered intraperiotenally (i.p.) for three days and then, 9 Gy gamma irradiation was applied; group 3 was the irradiation + curcumin group: curcumin was given i.p. for three days at 200 mg/ kg body weight and then the same dose of irradiation was applied. A significant increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) was detected in the liver, kidney, and brain tissues of the rats as a result of irradiation (P ˂ 0.01). Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in all the tissues (except for kidneys) decreased (P ˂ 0.01), liver SOD (superoxide dismutase) activity decreased (P ˂ 0.05), and GSH (glutathione) levels in kidney and ovary tissues (P ˂ 0.001) significantly increased. While curcumin administration returned the increased MDA levels in the kidneys and brain in result of irradiation to normal (P ˂ 0.01), it did not return the increased MDA levels in the liver tissue to normal (P ˂ 0.001) despite significantly reducing them. While decreased GSH-Px and SOD activity in the liver in result of irradiation increased with the addition of curcumin (P ˂ 0.05), increased GSH levels in the kidneys and ovaries returned to control levels (P ˂ 0.001). When MDA values were examined, it was found that the addition of curcumin protected the liver, kidneys and brain from the oxidative damage caused by irradiation.
