- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ1Determination of microplastic contamination and phthalate ester migration in canned and frozen packaged seafood: A probabilistic human health risk assessment via Monte Carlo simulation
Macit, Arife; Köktürk, Mine; Serdar, Osman; Alak, Gonca
This research was designed to identify the levels of microplastics (MP) and phthalate esters (PAE) in canned and frozen packaged fish and to assess the human health risks associated with these pollutants. Analyses were carried out on a total of 25 sample groups, including 10 different canned tuna samples, 9 different packaged seafood products, and 6 different packaging materials. Microplastics were characterized and polymer identification was performed using μ-Raman and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, while PAEs were determined by GC–MS/MS. The obtained data were used to calculate estimated daily intake (EDI), hazard index (HI), hazard quotient (HQ), and cancer risk (CR), and uncertainty was assessed using Monte Carlo simulation. The findings revealed that both microplastic and phthalate exposure were higher in the frozen fish group than in canned products. The highest MP concentrations were recorded in packaged Whiting B (0.73 ± 0.25 items/g) and oil-added canned tuna (0.57 ± 0.15 items/g). Regarding PAEs, while DEHP and DBP were generally prominent, significant peak concentrations of BBP and DNOP were also identified, reaching 1.91 ± 0.01 ppm for BBP in canned tuna with sunflower oil and 1.84 ± 0.01 ppm in packaged whiting. Furthermore, higher exposure was observed in males for most PAEs. HQ and HI values were below 1 (maximum HI: 1.57 × 10−2 for males consuming frozen seafood), while CR values remained within an acceptable range (4.74 × 10−7 to 3.49 × 10−6). In conclusion, health risks related to processed fish consumption appear generally low; however, processing and packaging may contribute to contamination and warrant further investigation.

In this study, copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) contents of propolis samples obtained from five different districts of Malatya, Türkiye were investigated. Element contents were determined using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The concentration ranges of propolis samples taken from five different districts of Malatya province varied between 1.24 ± 0.06 mg/kg and 6.28 ± 0.02 mg/kg for Cu, 206.28 ± 21.50 mg/kg and 663.08 ± 55.24 mg/kg for Fe, 15.40 ± 0.17 mg/kg and 27.11 ± 1.83 for Mn, 39.36 ± 1.82 mg/kg and 52.57 ± 2.13 mg/kg for Zn. The results obtained for each district and element were evaluated in detail considering the estimated daily intake (EDI), recommended dietary allowance (RDA), provisional maximum tolerable daily intake (PMTDI) of these elements for adults. Moreover, hazard coefficient (HQ) was calculated for risk assessment and it was determined that HQ values for the studied elements in bee propolis from all districts were below 1.

In this study, Fe and Zn contents in the muscle of different fish species (Engraulis encrasicolus, Trachurus trachurus, Mullus barbatus, Mugil cephalus, Pomatomus saltatrix, Dicentrarchus labrax, Scomber scombrus, Sparus aurata) were determined using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The highest Fe and Zn contents among studied fish species were found in Engraulis encrasicolus (7.13 ± 0.19 mg/kg) and Sparus aurata (11.00 ± 0.28 mg/kg). The lowest Fe and Zn contents were determined in Dicentrarchus labrax (3.12 ± 0.09 mg/kg) and Pomatomus saltatrix (5.50 ± 0.05 mg/kg). Moreover, the results were evaluated considering the estimated daily intakes (EDI) of these elements for adults. The estimated daily intakes were varied from 0.0101 to 0.0231 mg/kg bw/day for Fe and 0.0178 to 0.0357 mg/kg bw/day for Zn in fish species. In addition, the hazard quotient (HQ) and the hazard index (HI) values were calculated for risk assessment, and it was determined that these values were below 1 for fish species.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ2Exposure to copper and risk assessment for human health via consumption of alcoholic beverages
Ince, Muharrem; Kaplan Ince, Olcay; Onal, Ali
Present study was performed using a Box–Behnken Design (BBD) combined with a response surface methodology (RSM). The ultimate goal of this research was to apply BBD for modeling of copper (Cu2+) ions from alcoholic beverages and evaluate health risk assessment of Cu2+ via consumption of alcoholic beverages. The importance of independent paramaters and their interactions were examined using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Natural clay was investigated to remove Cu2+ ions from some alcoholic beverage samples including beer and wine. X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray (EDS) analysis were used for adsorbent characterization. Same analyzes were applied for Cu2+ loaded clay. In addition, experimental studies showed that Freundlich isotherm was better than Langmuir isotherm. Finally, optimized method was applied to alcoholic beverages. Besides target hazard quotients (THQ), estimated daily intake (EDI) values were calculated, to assess a health risk resulting from these alcoholic beverages regular consumption. The EDI values of Cu (µg/day/person) through consumption of investigated drinks were less than the recommended dietary allowance values. Also, the THQ values of Cu2+ were less than 1. According to estimated target hazard, it can be said no long life health concerns of Cu2+ is associated with the consumption of studied drinks. Obtained results were compared with the data from literature and levels set by regulatory authorities, it can be clearly stated that the consumption of mentioned alcoholic beverages do not pose a toxicological risk.

- MakaleYalnız künye2015Scopus SJRQ3Determination and Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Drinking Water of Tunceli, Turkey
Demir, V.; Dere, T.; Ergin, S.; Cakir, Y.; Celik, F.
Tunceli, Turkey is one of the small cities in the Eastern Anatolian Region with substantial natural, cultural and historical heritage that is suitable to be a slow city. Water sources are abundant in the area due to rain and heavy snowfall in the mountains, which seeps into the ground or flows into the rivers. Therefore monitoring and conservation of city's drinking water quality is one of the main issues in the city. The present study was conducted to investigate several heavy metals and cyanide, arsenic, and selenium concentrations of drinking water samples taken from 100 different locations in the city and towns of Tunceli, Turkey during the years 2011 and 2012. In three locations, high levels of copper was found with a range of 2.1-11.5 mg/L, and high levels of arsenic was detected in five locations with a range of 10.5-78.0 mu g/L, exceeding the action levels for copper and arsenic. For health risk assessment, the average daily dose and hazard quotient (HQ) were calculated. The region mean values of HQ were found above 1 for arsenic in the samples collected from Mazgirt, while HQ values were below 1 in the rest of the samples.
