The Effects of Boron Minerals on the Microstructure and Abrasion Resistance of Babbitt Metal (Sn–Sb–Cu) Used as Coating Materials in Hydroelectric Power Plants

    Tasgin, Yahya

In this study, the microstructure of a new alloy is examined which is created by adding boron oxide (B2O3), boric acid (H3BO3) and kolamanit (Ca2B6O11·5H2O) in certain proportions to the white metals (Sn–Sb–Cu) used in the carrier bearing dies of vertical Francis turbines in hydroelectric power plants. The Babbitt materials were coated with electric arc spray coating method before. Also it is examined that whether the coating material produced as a new alloy is appropriate for applying to die surface. Utility of the new white metal material in carrier bearing dies in hydroelectric power plants has been investigated based on the metallographic structure and wear of the new alloy. While some of the boron elements added to the Babbitt metal have positive results in terms of metallographic and abrasion values, some of the boron elements have negative effects.

Effect of MgO,Al2O3 and FeCr2O4 on microstructure and wear resistance of Babbitt metal (Sn-Sb-Cu)

    Tasgin, Yahya

In this study, the Sn-Sb-Cu alloy known as Babbitt metal and used as the coating material for the screw die surface of the journal bearings of the hydroelectric plants was reinforced with magnesium oxide (MgO), aluminium oxide (Al2O3) and ferrochromium (FeCr2O4) in order to ensure more efficient use of this alloy, formation were examined. The Babbitt prevent contact of the surface of the coating alloy with each other by acting as a separating oil layer having a 150 bar pressure. It is desired that the coating surface both resists against the high pressure applied and some part of the coating surface is asked to prevent from separating the surface of screw die as a result of high speed rotational motion and thus, damaging the shaft. Then, it was aimed to determine the wear resistance of the material as coating and the effects of the added%10 MgO,%10 Al2O3 and%10 FeCr2O4 on wear of material. As a result of the assessments carried out, it was suggested that the wear resistance of the coating would increase when the compound of Al2O3 was added into Babbitt metal. Purpose of the article used as coating material of babbitt metal, being investigated how to exert strong posture affected, under high pressure.

Characterization of hot pressed CuAl-TiC composites with different TiC grain sizes

    Islak, S.; Çelik, E.; Kir, D.; Özorak, C.

In this study, the CuAl-TiC composite materials were produced using hot pressing process. Effect of TiC grain size (0.2, 4 and 20 mu m) on some properties of these materials was investigated experimentally. Production of CuAl-TiC composites was carried out under pressure of 35 MPa, at 700A degrees C, and for a sintering time of 5 minutes. SEM-MAP studies showed that the TiC grains were relatively homogeneously distributed in the CuAl matrix. Microstructure analysis revealed that the composite materials consist of Cu, Al, Cu9Al4, CuAl2 and TiC phases. With the decreasing of TiC grain size, the hardness, transverse rupture strength, relative density and sintered density of composites increased.

PRODUCTION OF MATRICES WITH MOLYBDENUM AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO MATRICES WITH COBALT IN DIAMOND CUTTING TOOLS

Çelik, Ertugrul; Islak, Serkan; Ilkiliç, Cumali

This study is about the production of new matrices that are an alternative to cobalt matrices in diamond cutting tools. Thus, Fe, Cu, Al2O3 and Mo were used as the matrix components. The mass fractions of 1 %, 2 % and 3 % Mo were added to the matrix. The production of matrices was performed in a fully automatic hot-pressing machine under 35 MPa of pressure, at a sintering temperature of 850 degrees C, with a dwell period 4 min. The microstructures and phase compositions of the matrices were established with a scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDS) and an X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The hardness and bending strength of the segments were determined. The transverse rupture strength (TRS) of the segments was determined using the three-point bending test. The results revealed that Mo increased the bending strength and hardness of the segments.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of PM Fe-Cu-Al2O3 alloys

Çelik, Ertugrul; Islak, Serkan; Kir, Durmus; Ilkiliç, Cumali

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Cu addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of PM Fe-Cu-Al2O3 alloys produced using hot-pressing method. Copper powder was added to iron powder at 5 wt.%, 10 wt.% and 15 wt.% rates. Production of Fe-Cu-Al2O3 alloys was carried out under pressure of 35 MPa, at 750, 800 and 850 degrees C, and for a sintering time of 4 minutes. Microstructure phase composition, relative density, hardness, and transverse rupture strength of the alloys were investigated. Phase composition and microstructure of the alloys were characterised by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDS) techniques. The transverse rupture strength (TRS) of the samples was assessed by means of a three-point bending test. Hardness of Fe-Cu-Al2O3 alloys changed between 57 HB and 110 FIB depending on the amount of Cu and sintering temperature. Results show that the TRS of the alloys decreased together with the increase in the amount of copper, while it increased with increasing sintering temperature.

Geometric network simulation of high porosity foods

    Gueven, A.; Hicsasmaz, Z.

Solid foods are formed of a network of air cells distributed within a solid matrix. Size of air cells and how they are interconnected influence moisture sorption, thermal conductivity, aroma retention and texture of cellular foods. Available geometric pore structure models widely used in petroleum reservoir engineering, soil science, and catalysis are for low porosity (<= 0.4) materials. However, food materials generally have higher porosities (0.5-0.9). Microstructure of cookie (porosity = 0.54) and bread (porosity = 0.90) samples were simulated using the one-dimensional (1-D) corrugated pore model. Model parameters were: Unit cell dimensions; number of capillary segments, number of diameter sub-ranges, geometric placement of capillary segments in the unit cell; capillary segment length, and the seed number in random number generation. Accurate simulation of porosity depended on number of corrugated pores, and thus the number of diameter sub-ranges in the unit cell. For the cookie sample, a cubic unit cell that was able to accommodate more than a single capillary segment in a unit square and 3 diameter sub-ranges gave realistic results. Simulation of the bread crumb required a similar cubic unit cell arrangement with 12 diameter sub-ranges. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
