- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Scopus SJRQ3Local scour at a bridge abutment along a curved channel
Korkmaz, Meral; Emin Emiroglu, M.
Few studies have focused on abutments located on curved channels; previous studies have typically focused on straight channels. The present study experimentally examined the local scour that occurs around abutments of different lengths placed on inner and outer banks along a curved channel under clear-water scour flow conditions. The local scour around an abutment in a curved channel is a function of the upstream Froude number, flow intensity, the angle of the bend curvature and the ratios of abutment length to flow depth, abutment length to abutment width and abutment length to channel width. The maximum scour depth around the abutments placed on the outer bank was 1.45 times the scour depth on the inner bank. An empirical equation was developed containing all the dimensional parameters for equilibrium scour depth. The average percentage error of the proposed equation was 2%.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Distribution Centre Location Selection for Disaster Logistics with Integrated Goal Programming-AHP based TOPSIS Method at the City Level
Göçmen Polat, Elifcan
The importance of disaster logistics and its share in the logistics sector are increasing significantly. Most disasters are difficult to predict; therefore, a set of measures seems to be necessary to reduce the risks. Thus, disaster logistics needs to be designed with the pre-disaster and post-disaster measures. These disasters are experienced intensely in Turkey and the importance of these measures becomes more evidential. Therefore, accurate models are required to develop an effective disaster preparedness system. One of the most important decisions to increase the preparedness is to locate the centres for handling material inventory. In this context, this paper analyses the response phase designing the disaster distribution centres in Turkey at the provincial level. AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process) based TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method and goal programming model integration is used to decide alternative locations of distribution centres. TOPSIS method is employed for ranking the locations, which is based on hazard scores, total area, population, and distance to centre. Two conflicting objectives are first proposed in the goal programming formulation, in which maximization of the TOPSIS scores and minimization of the number of distribution centres covering all demands named set covering model are included. Although Gecimli has the highest priority with 0.8 p score in the TOPSIS ranking, Altincevre (0.77) and Buzlupınar (0.75) ensure both the TOPSIS score and coverage of the demand nodes. The results from this paper confirm that the computational results ensure disaster prevention insights especially in regions with limited data.

In this study, the efficiency of the Poly(4-vinylpyridine-co-acrylamide) doped with EuCl3 {(Poly(4-VP-co-AAM)/EuCl3)} hydrogel synthesized in the laboratory by free radical in-situ polymerization method in removing naphthol green B (NGB) from wastewater was investigated. The structural properties of the adsorbent have been described by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. The dependence of NGB adsorption performance on varying such as the amount of adsorbent, initial NGB concentration and contact time were investigated in a batch system. To determine the interaction effects of the selected parameters on the adsorption process and to optimize the adsorption capacity of the process, the central composite design (CCD) in the response surface methodology (RSM) was used. Optimum conditions were found to be 110 mg/L NGB concentration, 0.05 g/100 mL Poly(4-VP-co-AAM)/EuCl3/EuCl3 dosage and 165.81 min contact time. The adsorption capacity and removal efficiency under these conditions were 206.46 mg/g and 92.50 %, respectively. Experimental equilibrium data were in better agreement with the Langmuir isotherm. The kinetic results indicated that the adsorption process can be defined by pseudo-second-order kinetic with internal diffusion as one of the rate-determining steps. The adsorption process was found to be exothermic and spontaneous. Experimental results showed that dye can be successfully removed from wastewaters using Poly(4-VP-co-AAM)/EuCl3 hydrogel as adsorbent.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ2Effects of Optimized Operating Parameters on Combustion Characteristics and NOx Emissions of a Burner based on Orthogonal Analysis
Xu, Qian; Akkurt, Nevzat; Yang, Gang; Zhu, Lidong; Shi, Kejian; Wang, Kang; Zou, Zhenwei; Liu, Zhihui; Wang, Jiulong; Du, Zhiwei
To optimize the structure of the burner, improve the combustion performance, and reduce the emission of NOx, a self-circulating low NOx combustion technology was used to design a new type of flue gas self-circulating low NOx burner. Based on previous research on the numerical model of combustion and the composition of mixed gas on combustion and NOx emissions, the effect of various factors on the ejection coefficient of the flue gas self-circulating structure was analyzed using the orthogonal test method, and the burner operating parameters, such as preheating temperature and excess air coefficient, were deeply studied through the three-dimensional finite element numerical model in this paper. The results show that the diameter ratio of the nozzle and the length of the cylindrical section of the flue gas self-circulating structure have great influence on its ejection and mixing ability. The optimal ejection coefficient was 0.4829. Overall, the amount of NOx emissions greatly increased from 6.23×10−6 (volume fraction) at the preheating temperature 973 K to 3.5×10−3 at preheating temperature 1573 K. When the excess air coefficient decreased from 1.2 to 1, the maximum combustion temperature decreased from 2036.3 K to 1954.22 K, and the NOx emissions decreased from 352.29×10−6 to 159.73×10−6.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ2Facile preparation of commercial Bi2O3 nanoparticle decorated activated carbon for pseudocapacitive supercapacitor applications
Üner, Osman; Aslan, Naim; Sarıoğlu, Akın; Semerci, Fatih; Koç, Mümin Mehmet
In this work, a facile method to prepare Bi2O3 decorated activated carbon (Bi2O3@AC) composites with high pseudocapacitive properties was presented. The inorganic–organic composites synthesized using commercial Bi2O3 and active carbon with different weight ratio. The composites were assessed using spectroscopic, microscopic, and diffractive techniques. Our assessments confirmed that active carbons were successfully doped with commercial Bi2O3 nanoparticles with different dopant rates. The electrochemical performance of as-prepared materials was researched by cyclic voltammetry, chronopotentiometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 6 M KOH electrolyte. Higher specific capacitance was achieved for increased Bi2O3 nanoparticle in composites. The 20%-Bi2O3@AC had a maximum specific capacitance of 565 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g. In addition, the symmetrically assembled supercapacitor delivers a high energy density (23.0 Wh kg−1). Moreover, 67% of the initial capacitance is maintained after 1500 cycles at 200 mV/s, suggesting good cycling stability. Due to the synergistic effect of compositing a promising electrochemical performance was observed that was not obtained by bare AC or Bi2O3. As a result, the electrochemical properties of 20%-Bi2O3@AC composite is promising and it may be used as potential electrode for supercapacitor.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Scopus SJRQ1A new mobile convolutional neural network-based approach for pixel-wise road surface crack detection
Doğan, Gürkan; Ergen, Burhan
In recent years, the worldwide road network has grown rapidly and reached an enormous size. Parallel to this size of the road network, the imperfections on the road surfaces are just as large. This has led to a significant increase in road maintenance costs for traffic management departments. Researchers have proposed methods for automatic flaw detection using deep neural networks to reduce road maintenance costs. However, these methods are insufficient in terms of performance and lightness. In this study, a convolutional neural network-based approach is proposed, which provides more successful road surface crack detection and requires less lightweight compared to other studies. Since the performance of the proposed approach is higher and more lightweight, it can be used more effectively and efficiently in mobile systems.

Seseli L. is one of the largest genera of the Apiaceae family widely known for their traditional uses as herbal remedies. In the present study, the methanolic and water extracts of two Seseli species, S. gummiferum and S. transcaucasicum were evaluated for their bioactive contents and biological activities. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents in the extracts ranged from 19.09 to 24.33 mg GAE/g and from 0.45 to10.09 mg RE/g, respectively. Moreover, while narcissin was detected as the most abundant component in the methanolic extract of S. transcaucasicum (261.40 µg/g), chlorogenic acid was identified as the major component in all the other extracts, although a high amount was also present in the methanolic S. transcaucasicum extract (107.48–243.12 µg/g). The total antioxidant capacity was also determined by the phosphomolybdenum assay (0.66–1.18 mM TE/g). Other antioxidant assays such as the radical scavenging assays (DPPH: 5.51–11.45 mg TE/g; ABTS: 43.46–51.91 mg TE/g), reducing assays (CUPRAC: 41.67–53.20 mg TE/g; FRAP: 31.26–34.14 mg TE/g), as well as the metal chelating activity assay (14.38–38.57 mg EDTAE/g) were conducted. All the extracts showed inhibitory potential against the enzyme’s amylase (0.12–0.78 mM ACAE/g), acetyl-and butyryl-cholinesterase (0.15–9.71 mg GALAE/g), while only the methanolic extracts acted as inhibitors of tyrosinase (107.15 and 109.37 mg KAE/g) and only the water extract of S. gummiferum displayed anti-glucosidase activity (0.13 mM ACAE/g). Interestingly, the methanolic extracts of both Seseli species showed lower cytotoxicity towards HaCaT cells (IC50: >500 µg/mL), compared to the water extracts (IC50: 267.8 and 321.41 µg/mL). Besides, only the methanolic extracts showed a slight wound healing effect (28.21 and 31.23%). All extracts showed antibacterial action against Staphylococcus lugdunensis (minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations: 0.025–2 mg/mL). S. gummiferum methanolic extract, which exhibited the highest antibacterial potency was found to inhibit adhesion and invasion of S. lugdunensis to HaCaT cells as well. Taken together, this study demonstrated the two Seseli species to harbour interesting bioactive components, in particular polyphenolics and to exhibit several biological properties that could be further investigated for their potential exploitation as healing agents as supported by various traditional medicinal uses.

Bürhan, Yücel; Özkaynak, Fatih
Each new approach and scientific progress provides many advantages and innovations from theory to practice yet, its disadvantages should be evaluated comprehensively from different perspectives. In this study, the effects of knowledge extraction approaches on the cryptanalysis process have been evaluated. It is known that the secret key of the encryption algorithm can be obtained by using knowledge extraction approaches, especially with application oriented attacks such as side channel analysis. It is known that chaotic masks can be used as a countermeasure to prevent the success of these attacks. In this study, side-channel analyzes of the chaos-based substitution box structures that have been proposed in recent years have been carried out. The side channel analysis results of the existing studies in the literature have been carried out for the first time in this study. The results obtained showed that the approaches in the field of knowledge extraction should be handled more comprehensively in the cryptanalysis processes, and also pointed out that a new evaluation criterion should be analyzed for future studies for chaos-based design studies.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ2A modified failure modes and effects analysis using interval-valued spherical fuzzy extension of TOPSIS method: case study in a marble manufacturing facility
Gul, Muhammet; Ak, M. Fatih
Failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) is a commonly used step-by-step approach to assess potential failures existing in a product or process design. In this paper, a modified FMEA model based on an interval-valued spherical fuzzy extension of technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (IVSF-TOPSIS) is proposed to cope with drawbacks of the traditional risk priority number (RPN) computation. Spherical fuzzy sets are the integration of Pythagorean fuzzy sets and neutrosophic sets. They provide more freedom to experts in decision making by including the degree of membership, non-membership, and hesitation of fuzzy sets. Therefore, initially, TOPSIS is merged with a special branch of spherical sets “interval-valued spherical fuzzy sets” to determine priorities of emerged failures. As a novelty to traditional RPN of FMEA, three parameters called cost, prevention, and effectiveness in addition to the existed parameters of severity, occurrence and detection are attached to the proposed approach. Weights of these parameters are determined via an interval-valued spherical weighted arithmetic mean operator (IVSWAM). As a demonstration, a case study in a marble manufacturing facility is provided to show the applicability of the novel model. Results show that the most crucial failure modes concern with the maintenance and repairing works of the factory and the lack of technical periodic checks of lifting vehicles regarding “block area: crane” failures. Some comparative and validation studies are also performed to test the solidity of the approach.

- MakaleYalnız künye2022Scopus SJRQ2Investigation of electrical conductivity and bioactive quality during ohmic evaporation process of Apple juice
Karakavuk, Emrah; Goksu, Ali; Sabanci, Serdal
In this study, the evaporation of apple juice was completed with ohmic heating to eliminate some problems with conventional evaporation methods. Ohmic evaporation (OE) was performed at different voltage gradients (13–17 V/cm) for determining electrical conductivity (EC), Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and the total phenolic content (TPC) changes. The voltage gradient affected the total consumed energy, average power, and specific water removal ratio (SWRR) values (p <.05). The shortest time was obtained at 17 V/cm, while the longest time was 13 V/cm during the OE process. The EC value varies between 0.19–0.85 S/m for the voltage gradients. EC and current values increase with temperature until boiling starts, then decrease, and the EC value tends to increase slightly. The TPC value ranged between 587.4–716,4 mg GAE/100 g and was higher at OE than in the conventional process. As a result, the OE process preserves the TPC value of apple juice better while shortening the processing time. Novelty impact statement: The ohmic evaporation process is an alternative method that can be preferred in concentrating fruit juices with consuming less energy and obtaining higher quality products. In addition, considering the phenolic distribution, it was determined in this study that the products were better preserved in the ohmic evaporation process. It is predicted that it will provide important data for both pilot and industrial designs for the establishment of any ohmic evaporation systems.

- MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ1Analysis of the mechanical behavior and prediction of the plastic zone of a large-diameter buried gas pipeline under ground overload
Xu, Qian; Zhong, Liqiong; Shu, Mengjie; Zou, Zhenwei; Yang, Gang; Zheng, Qiang; Chen, Xingli; Akkurt, Nevzat; Zhang, Hui; Qiang, Yujie
Plastic failure of pipelines caused by ground overload is increasing. The one-dimensional model based on mechanical nodal parameters cannot predict the plastic failure characteristics of the three-dimensional structure of the pipeline. In order to predict the evolution of the plastic failure of the pipeline with the yield strength as the evaluation criterion, a multidimensional model is needed to consider the changes in the external loads and the changes in the mechanical properties of the pipeline along the circumferential and axial directions. In this study, a finite element calculation model for a large-diameter gas pipeline underground overload was established to investigate the law of stress change in the plastic zone. The nonlinear surface fitting method was used to establish the angle fitting model of the plastic zone and the depth fitting model of the plastic zone. The variation of the area of the plastic zone was described, and the reliability of the results was verified. In addition, the accuracy of the fitting model and the cost of the finite element calculation were evaluated. The results showed that the pipeline entered plasticity at a ground load of P = 25 MPa, and the plastic zone developed continuously in the axial and circumferential directions as the ground load increased. The angle and depth increased to 36° and 1.8 m, respectively, at P = 50 MPa. The average absolute errors for the plastic zone depth fitting model and the plastic zone angle fitting model were 6.42% and 6.64%, respectively, both of which can provide an accurate description of the plastic zone. The calculation results of the plastic zone angle fitting model could meet requirements of data processing and analysis. The plastic zone depth fitting model could be used to obtain solutions with higher accuracy, but it increases the cost of finite element simulation.

There are three major fault zones in Turkey scattered around the country known as East Anatolian Fault (EAF), North Anatolian Fault (NAF) and Anatolian-Aegean Subduction Zone (AASZ). Last two decades, EAF has been rather quiescent compared with NAF. However, this quiescence was broken in the beginning of the millennium. The strong shaking was started in 2003 with Bingöl earthquake (Mw = 6.3) and the last earthquake on the EAF is the Sivrice-Elazlǧ (Mw = 6.8) on January 24, 2020. Strong seismicity of these faults damaged the structures severely and caused death of the habitants. This study aims to present, seismotectonic of the region, general characteristics of the earthquakes and more specifically to report structural damage of infill walls of the structure's damages caused by these earthquakes. Damage evaluation and identification of the observed infill wall damages due to 2003 Bingöl, 2011 Van earthquakes and January 24, 2020 Sivrice-Elazlǧ earthquake occurred Turkey's Eastern region, were presented, and possible solutions were suggested. Moreover, the effects of the infill walls on the behavior of structures under static and dynamic load cases are discussed that experienced in these earthquakes. Damages are classified according to formations such as in-plane or out-of-plane, evaluations and the results obtained from the discussions are presented for each category.

Fresh water is scarce, making it a worldwide issue. In order to address global freshwater demand, a filtration technique is needed. Solar distillation (SD) that purifies brackish and sub-terranean water has been proven to be a promising green technology. It produces distilled water which can be used as potable water for drinking and other purposes. The designs, operations, and configurations of several inverted solar stills are thoroughly examined in this article. All techniques for solar water distillation to separate saltwater from freshwater have the same fundamental idea. It has been demonstrated that for a specified mass of water in the top basin, the daily output of an inverted absorber double-basin solar still (IASS) grows with increasing water depth in the bottom basin. Nevertheless, as the water depth in the bottom basin rises from 1 cm to 5 cm, the output of an inverted absorber double-basin solar system falls by about 27%. At water depths of 4, 6, and 8 cm, the daily yields from inverted absorber solar stills paired with a refrigeration cycle (RIASS) were 6.4, 10.08, and 9.5 L/day, respectively. The results also showed a substantial rise in water temperature in the inverted absorber solar still as a result of lower bottom heat loss and larger absorptivity. In this study, the emphasis on energy, efficiency, and environmental concerns remains with the modified multi-wick basin-type inverted absorber solar panel. The performance of the inverted trickling solar still was assessed with a 60 ppm average salinity under various sun radiation, feed water flow rate, and existence conditions for natural convection. It was found that the still could produce 2.55 L/day m2 of fresh water, a 15% increase. Brackish water with a salinity of 6000 ppm was used to test the still in November at tilt angles of 47◦ and 32◦ . Condensate production at the specified angles was 2.8 and 2 L/d, respectively. A total output of 6.907, 5.681, and 4.650 kg/m2 /day was also generated using the modified multi-wick basin-type inverted absorber solar still (MMWBIASS) at water depths of 1, 2, and 3 cm, respectively. With black cotton wicks, the MMWBIASS had a total thermal efficiency of 34.04%, 28.17%, and 23.61%.

- MakaleYalnız künye2022Scopus SJRQ1Occupational health, safety and environmental risk assessment in textile production industry through a Bayesian BWM-VIKOR approach
Ak, M. Fatih; Yucesan, Melih; Gul, Muhammet
Occupational risk assessment (ORA) is a process that consists of evaluating, ranking, and classifying the hazards and associated risks arising in any workplace from the viewpoint of occupational health and safety. Many ORA methods have been proposed in the literature, from a single independent expert to participatory methodologies made by group decision and simple to complex ones. In this paper, a holistic ORA is presented, which uses two important multi-attribute decision methods named Bayesian Best-Worst Method (Bayesian BWM) and VIseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR). Bayesian BWM is used to determine the importance weights of six different assessment criteria, which are the probability of hazardous event (P), frequency (F), severity (S), detectability (D), cost (C) and sensitivity not to use personal protective equipment (SNP). Since the classical BWM finds solution to the weights of a number of criteria from only one expert's judgment, Bayesian BWM is preferred in this paper (1) to enable participation of a group of experts, (2) to aggregate the preferences of these multiple experts into consensus without loss of information and (3) to follow a probabilistic way for solving the ORA problem. The hazards are then ranked by VIKOR. The approach is implemented in the ORA process of a textile production plant. Results of risk analysis showed that electricity hazard and associated risks constitute the highest risk ratings. These hazards arise from the product, process, human and working environment. The associated risks are evaluated, prioritized, and detailed control measures are proposed. This study made comparisons with the classical BWM-VIKOR approach to demonstrate the proposed approach's difference and practicality. Results can also help practitioners and risk analysts in formulating the improvement measures to increase the overall safety of the working environment further.

The European Water Framework Directive (WFD) (2000/60/EC) is the most visionary piece of European environmental legislation that aims to achieve good water status of both surface water and groundwater bodies. The Directive provides a fundamental basis for surface water monitoring activities in the European Member States. The objective of this study is to investigate the occurrence of micropollutants in the Yesilirmak River and to develop a cost-effective monitoring strategy based on spatiotemporal data. A 2-year seasonal monitoring program was conducted between 2016 and 2018, and the water samples were analyzed for 45 priority substances as defined by the WFD and 250 national river basin–specific pollutants. In the basin, 166 pollutants were quantified in at least one of the samples with individual concentrations ranging from 6 × 10−6μg/L to 100 mg/L. Fifty-four pollutants with a frequency of occurrence greater than 5% were selected for further evaluation. Based on statistical evaluation of the data, 20 pollutants were identified as the pollutants of primary concern. These 20 pollutants were grouped under three categories (metals, biocides, and industrial organic compounds) and their spatiotemporal distributions in the basin were assessed to establish a monitoring strategy specific to each pollutant category. The results of the study revealed that the common season for the monitoring of all pollutant categories was the spring. This study provides a generic methodology for the development of a cost-effective water quality monitoring strategy, which can be applicable for use in different basins and pollutant datasets.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ1Hazard identification, risk assessment and control for dam construction safety using an integrated BWM and MARCOS approach under interval type-2 fuzzy sets environment
Celik, Erkan; Gul, Muhammet
Undoubtedly, dams are one of the projects developed by people to make optimal water use and generate hydroelectric energy power. In addition to the importance of detailed project planning, faultless production, and optimal working conditions in dam constructions, it is equally important to identify and analyze the risks from the occupational health and safety (OHS) perspective that may arise during construction and operation. In this context, hazard identification, risk analysis, and control, which are the main issues of dam safety, have gained importance. In this study, a novel approach is developed for dam construction safety. Two newly proposed multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods of “Best-Worst Method-BWM” and “measurement of alternatives and ranking to Compromise solution-MARCOS”, are merged under the context of interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2FSs). Severity and probability, two essential parameters of the risk score, have been weighted using BWM. Subsequently, the priority orders of hazards have been determined by the MARCOS. In implementing the approach to the blasting process in dam construction, several control measures are suggested for stakeholders. Some comparative works and sensitivity analyses are performed to test the approach's validity and solidity from the methodological viewpoint.

Imak, Andaç; Çelebi, Adalet; Türkoğlu, Muammer; Şengür, Abdulkadir
In this paper, a novel approach is proposed to detect the dental materials in dental Panoramic images. In general, dental Panoramic images are examined by the dentists to detect the dental materials of the patients. Examining the dental Panoramic images is a time-consuming procedure and necessitates highly skilled dentists. Thus, computer imaging and decision support systems based on machine learning are in demand for dental applications. In this study, a semi-automatic, image processing and machine learning based approach is proposed for detection of dental materials in dental Panoramic images. More specifically, the dental materials namely dental filling, dental bridge and tooth crown are targeted by the proposed approach. Within the approach developed, the dental Panoramic images used as input are initially pre-processed for noise removal and tooth region is determined using a deep learning approach. To this end, a faster Regional Convolutional Neural Networks (RCNN) method is employed. A tooth region correction procedure is applied after application of faster RCNN to determine the exact location of the tooth region as faster RCNN may produce more tooth regions than one correct tooth region.
