In the present work, Homalothecium sericeum biomass was used for removal of Co(II) from aqueous solution. The effects of process parameters (contact time, biosorbent amount, and initial Co(II) con-centration) on the response (Co(II) % removal) were investigated using a batch adsorption system optimized with response surface methodology/central composite design method. Under optimized conditions the maximum Co(II) removal efficiency achieved is 94.07% at an initial Co(II) concentration of 2.05 mg/L, a H. sericeum amount of 0.34 g/50 mL, and a process time of 36.09 min. In this study, the toxicity of the medium after biosorption carried out under optimized conditions was also tested with Daphnia magna bioassay. When mortality results with D. magna were evaluated, although a removal efficiency of 94.07% was obtained after biosorption, this was not sufficient to reduce mortality of D. magna.

This study is the first report that aims to optimize the removal of Remazol Brilliant Violet 5R (RBV 5R) and Brilliant Green (BG) from synthetic solutions using Hypnum cupressiforme samples from Abant Mountains of Bolu (Turkey) as biosorbent and to conduct toxicity evaluation studies of treated wastewater using Daphnia magna. Optimization was performed using central composite design under response surface methodology with the operational factors of dye concentration, H. cupressiforme dose, and process time. The optimal conditions for dye concentration, H. cupres-siforme dose, and process time obtained by the numerical analysis were 19.02 mg/L, 0.18 g/50 mL and 110.59 min for RBV 5R, while these values were 18.57 mg/L, 0.18 g/50 mL and 99.45 min for BG, respectively. At the optimum values, maximum RBV 5R and BG removal were achieved as 99.39% and 99.22%, respectively. The D. magna mortality rates showed that treatment with adsorption were sufficient to remove the complete toxicity of dyes especially for RBV 5R.

In the present study, a fixed-bed column study was performed using a novel biocomposite mate-rial, Amanita vaginata immobilized on Amberlite XAD-4 resin, to find out the adsorption behavior of nickel (Ni2+) ions from industrial wastewater. The influence of some important operating conditions including pH (3–7), biocomposite material amount (150–250 mg (XAD-4:Amanita vaginata, 5:1)) influent flow rate (4–8 mL min–1) besides Ni2+ ions initial concentration (20–40 mg L–1) on the uptake of Ni2+ solution were also optimized using a synthetic water solution. A central composite design combined with response surface methodology was utilized to maximize Ni2+ ions removal using A. vaginata immobilized on Amberlite XAD-4 resin as a biocomposite material in a column biosorption process. A mathematical model was derived from the central composite design approach for predicting responses and analysis of variance. Also, for checking model adequacy a lack of fit test was carried out. It was determined that the checked and proposed quadratic model was derived from the experimental design data. The biocomposite material adsorption capacity was calculated as 6.28 mg g–1. A high coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.9887) was presented by analysis of variance. Results confirmed that the amount of adsorbed Ni2+ amount did not change with the increase of the flow rate ratio and dose when the initial concentration of Ni2+ ions increased. The maximum adsorp-tion capacity of biocomposite material was achieved at 6.9 pH, 150.1 mg of biocomposite material amount, 7.8 mL min–1 of solution flow rate, and 39.7 mg L–1 of Ni2+ ions initial concentration. Finally, the developed method was applied to industrial wastewater to determine Ni2+ ions concentrations.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Scopus SJRQ3The use of Phanerochaete chrysosporium as an alternative bioremedia-tion tool of heavy metal, chemical oxygen demand and phosphate from landfill leachate
Yildirim, Numan; Kardas, Elif; Ince, Muharrem
In this study, in order to investigate the bioremediation efficiency of Phanerochaete chrysosporium, chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction, total phosphate levels and heavy metal (Fe2+, Mn2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+) removal were determined in five different experimental groups (control, X, Y, Z, and T) under static culture conditions containing leachate at different incubation periods (5, 10, and 20 d). At the end of the 20th day of incubation, 84% Mn2+ and Zn2+ removal was achieved in X application group. In the same application group, 90.88% COD reduction was also obtained. The lowest total phosphate value was determined as 2.63 g L–1 in T group compared with control group (5.0 g L–1). Similar improvements have been identified in other application groups in terms of metal removal, total phosphate levels and COD reduction. As a result, the findings obtained from our study show that white rot fungus P. chrysosporium can be used as an alternative biological resource in the studies for improving landfill leachate in terms of metal removal efficacy, COD and total phosphate level reduction capacity.

In the present study, a novel biosorbent, namely Agaricus campestris, was used for the removal of Methylene Blue (MB) from an aqueous medium. The biosorbent was characterized using fourier-transform infrared spectrometer spectra, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray, and thermogravimetric analysis. The influence of important process parameters including pH (4–7), temperature (25°C–35°C), contact time (15–25 min), and biosorbent amount (40–80 mg) on the uptake of MB solution were also optimized, which significantly affected the removal efficiency of MB. A central composite design (CCD) combined with response surface modeling (RSM) was carried out to maximize MB removal by A. campestris for the adsorption process. A regression model was derived using RSM to predict the responses and analysis of variance (ANOVA), and to check model adequacy lack of fit test was used. The A. campestris adsorption capacity was determined as 24.2 mg g–1. The ANOVA showed a high coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.9987). This study clearly revealed that RSM was one of the most effective and appropriate method for the optimization of operating conditions. The possibility of reusing A. campestris was also investigated and, as a result, it was found quite possible and showed high performance in the recovery of MB.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ3Optimization of the adsorption of methyl green dye on almond shells using central composite design
Tanaydin, Mehmet Kayra; Goksu, Ali
Almond shells, known as the agricultural industry’s waste, were utilized to adsorb methyl green dye from aqueous solutions. The effects of initial concentration (2–10 mg/L), the adsorbent dosage (0.1–0.5 g), shaking speed (150–250 rpm), pH (4–7), temperature (20°C–50°C), and particle size (137–892 μm) on methyl green adsorption on the almond shell were examined. The response surface methodology was used to optimize the methyl green dye’s adsorption process using the almond shell. The central composite design was utilized to obtain optimum experimental conditions. Performed experiments obtained the isotherm data, and it was analyzed by utilizing the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. The isotherm data can be fitted well by the Langmuir model. The pseudo-second-order model can anticipate the adsorption kinetics. The thermodynamic parameters such as ΔG° ΔH°, and ΔS° were calculated and found to be –2.878, 42.12 kJ/mol, and 0.151 kJ/mol K, respectively. These values demonstrated that the present adsorption process was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic in the temperature scope of (20°C–50°C). This study indicates that almond shells were considered an efficient adsorbent to remove from the aqueous solutions. The maximum adsorption capacity of the almond shell (1.1 mg/g) was obtained. In this system, the almond shell’s pre-activation process was not preferred because it will create an extra cost. Adsorption kinetics studies showed that the model is represented as a pseudo-second-order of adsorption data.

Alp, Hevidar; Ince, Muharrem; Ince, Olcay Kaplan; Onal, Ali
In this study, Eriochrome Black T (EBT) removal from aqueous media by Agaricus campestris (AC) which is an eco-friendly biosorbent was investigated using a central composite design (CCD) combined with response surface methodology. The CCD was chosen as the statistical prediction method to reduce the number of experiments which, in turn, will directly save time and chemicals. To opti-mize the process, various experimental independent variables such as the pH of the solution, contact time, adsorbent dosage and temperature were selected. The optimal experimental conditions were obtained as 6.5, 30°C, 20 min and 20 mg, for solution pH, temperature, contact time and adsorbent dosage, respectively. Under these optimized conditions, maximum EBT (100 mg L–1 initial concentra-tion) removal efficiency was calculated as 64.2 mg g–1. The independent variables and their interaction significance were checked using analysis of variance and it was found that the EBT biosorption on AC was highly significant (p < 0.001). The results were justified by the relatively high correlation coefficients (R2 = 0.9967) of the statistical prediction. The EBT biosorption was confirmed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis monitoring the functional groups during EBT biosorption on AC. This was the first report on the parameter optimization of EBT biosorp-tion using AC in an experimental design. The used biosorbent was characterized by FTIR, scanning electron microscope coupled with energy dispersive spectrometer and thermogravimetric analysis. The proposed biosorption process efficiently removed EBT, present in various aqueous mediums and can be used in industrial processes.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Scopus SJRQ2A research on coliform bacteria in the golden Horn Estuary (Sea of Marmara, Turkey)
Karabas, Necati; Tas, Seyfettin; Erguven, Gokhan Onder; Bayhan, Hurrem
Spatio-temporal variation of the total and fecal coliform groups as bacteriological indicators in the marine environment was investigated in surface water of the Golden Horn Estuary in monthly intervals between June 2012 and May 2013. Temperature, salinity, Secchi depth, pH, dissolved oxygen and oxygen saturation were measured at 10 stations simultaneously with bacteriological analyses. Highest total coliform counts in surface water was 940×103 CFU/100 ml at the Alibeykoy Creek in November and highest fecal coliform was 178×103 CFU/100 ml at the same area in October. The lowest coliform counts were observed during summer, while the highest counts were in autumn. During rainy days, some domestic wastewater overflowing from sewerages are discharged to the estuary, which those water adversely affect water quality. The total and fecal coliform counts in surface water increased gradually from the lower to upper section of the estuary. Although the Black Sea water pumping from the Strait of Istanbul to the Golden Horn by Kagithane Creek is an important factor in the decrease of pollution and better water quality, there are still some runoff materials including uncontrolled discharges particularly in the Alibeykoy Creek. The results of this study showed that that the bacteriological pollution increased due to municipal wastewater resulting from overflow after the precipitation and the surrounding waters of the Golden Horn basin mix with surface waters. Thus, the most important factor in order to decrease the bacteriological pollution is to provide a full control of the surface discharges.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2017Scopus SJRQ2Monitoring the ethalfluralin biodegradation with certain bactofungi mixed culture
Ergüven, Gökhan Önder
In this study, the biodegradation of ethalfluralin (C13H14F3N3O4), which is the most preferred herbicide in sunflower farming in Thrace region in Turkey, is investigated. Bacteria and fungi were isolated in soil samples obtained in Thrace region, and a mixed culture was prepared using equal volume of microorganism cultures. Five different apparatuses, including sterile agricultural soil were setup and ethalfluralin in 1,500 µg/L concentration was added to each apparatus, and they were watered for 6 weeks with sterilized tap water. Drained water was then collected, and the filtrates were measured for chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total organic carbon (TOC) and ethalfluralin. Furthermore, pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration were measured. Study results demonstrated that the highest biodegradation was observed in the soil sample that contained 10 mL mixed microorganism culture and ethalfluralin. In this filtrate, ethalfluralin, COD, BOD5 and TOC removals were measured as 92%, 85%, 82% and 97% respectively. The DO level remained between 3.00 and 4.50 mg/L in the first 3 weeks for all cultures. After the third week, it increased to 5.8 mg/L in the 5 mL culture mixture and to 7.1 mg/L in the 2 mL culture mixture. pH results demonstrated, an increase during the first 3 weeks and pH values decreased for all culture mixture media due to the formation of carbonic acid.

Erguven, Gokhan Onder; Yildirim, Numan; Adar, Elanur
This present study aims to evaluating the efficiency of P. chrysosporium (P.c) to degrade the different concentrations of malathion (MLT) (50, 100 and 150 ppm) under agitated (130 rpm) submerged culture conditions via reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD). We have previously screening the growth of fungus in sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) medium for 6 days. We have also determined the laccase activity during degradation process for 15 days. According to our results the fungus has achieved 99.6, 98.8 and 98.7 % COD reduction at concentration of 50, 100 and 150 ppm respectively the end of the 15 days. The highest laccase activity (180 ± 5.69 U/L) was measured at concentration of 50 ppm the end of the 15 days and the lowest activity (36 ± 3.26) was determined at concentration of 150 ppm the end of the 15 days. The dried biomass of fungus was weighted at end of the 15 days and we have determined that malathion in culture medium reduced the biomass production compared the control group (SDB + P.c). Our results showed that, P. chrysosporium could be an effective bioremediation tool for treatment of malathion containing wastewater.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2017Scopus SJRQ2Rapid malachite green removal from aqueous solution by natural zeolite: Process optimization by response surface methodology
Tanyol, Mehtap
In this study, malachite green removal from aqueous solutions by natural zeolite was investigated. The interaction between zeolite and malachite green was determined by SEM/EDX and FTIR. The parameters like adsorbent dosage (0.1–1 mg/100 mL), initial malachite green concentration (40–200 mg/L) and the contact time (10–600 s) were optimized using the central composite design of response surface methodology. Maximum removal yield (99.70%) was obtained at an adsorbent dosage of 0.68 mg/100 mL, an initial malachite green concentration of 79.02 mg/L, and at 414 s contact time. The equilibrium process complied better with the Langmuir isotherm model, which exhibits a single layer adsorption, when compared with the Freundlich isotherm model. Adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order type kinetic and intra-particle diffusion played an important role onto adsorption mechanism of malachite green. The findings of this study demonstrated that zeolite which is found abundant on earth as a cheap and efficient adsorbent could be used for rapid malachite green adsorption from aqueous solutions.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2017Scopus SJRQ2Adsorption of hazardous crystal violet dye by almond shells and determination of optimum process conditions by taguchi method
Goksu, Ali; Tanaydin, Mehmet Kayra
Almond shells are classified as an agricultural waste of the food industry. In this study, almond shells were prepared as efficient adsorbents for removing Crystal Violet (CV) dye. The effects of adsorbent dosage, pH, initial concentration, shaking speed, temperature and particle size were studied. The Taguchi L25 experimental design method was used to obtain the optimum experimental condition. The data were analyzed using the signal to noise (S/N) ratio and analysis of variance (ANOVA) for removal of CV from aqueous solutions. The isotherm data were obtained from the experiments performed. The obtained isotherm data were analyzed via the Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models of which the Langmuir isotherm model fitted the best. Thermodynamic parameters such as ΔH°, ΔS° and ΔG° were calculated and the results were 18.5 kJ/mol, 0.057 kJ/mol K and –1.514 kJ/mol at 25°C, respectively. The results of this study indicate that almond shells are efficient adsorbents for removing Crystal Violet (CV) from aqueous solutions. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 1.075 mg/g on the almond shells. Adsorption kinetics studies showed that adsorption data can be modeled by a pseudo-second-order model. The optimum conditions for the adsorption on almond shells were found to be: adsorbent dosage = 0.5 g, concentration = 4 ppm, pH = 6, shaking speed = 200 rpm and shaking time = 180 min.
