Geochemical characteristics of a pre-Middle Jurassic oceanic crust fragment from the Central Pontides in northern Turkey: Geodynamic implications on intra-oceanic subduction initiation

    Çimen, Okay

The Central Pontides (northern Turkey) is one of the key localities to understand the geodynamic evolution of the Palaeo- and Neotethyan oceans. It consists of the pre-Jurassic basement units, the Early Jurassic and the Early Cretaceous accretionary complexes, the widespread Middle Jurassic continental arc magmatics and the Late Jurassic to Tertiary cover units. The Early Cretaceous accretionary complex is represented by the Central Pontide Structural Complex and includes the Middle Jurassic oceanic units, which were metamorphosed during the Early Cretaceous. Apart from these oceanic units, a few metaophiolite and serpentinite fragments have been recognized within the basement units, which may represent the remnants of an older ocean. The pre-Middle Jurassic Devrekani Metaophiolite is the largest oceanic fragment and tectonically intercalated within/between the Devrekani Metamorphics and the Çangaldağ Metamorphic Complex. It is mainly composed of harzburgites, dunites with chromite veins and metagabbros, and cut by metabasaltic andesites and metadacites. Petrographically, the gabbro consists mainly of plagioclase and clinopyroxene, and displays phaneritic/porphyritic texture. In contrast, the metabasaltic andesite includes plagioclase and mica phenocrysts within a fine-grained groundmass. Also, the metadacite is composed predominantly of quartz, plagioclase, and mica minerals. Two different magmatic groups belonging to completely different tectono-magmatic settings have been geochemically determined based on the immobile trace element systematics. The metadacites and metabasaltic andesites are akin to continental arc magmatics and characterized by negative Nb and Ta anomalies and depleted HFSE relative to Th and La contents. However, the metagabbro samples display the geochemical signatures of boninitic rocks and characterized by highly depletion in HFSEs and REEs relative to N-MORB. The Devrekani Metaophiolite in the Central Pontides may represent another remnant of pre-Middle Jurassic oceanic crust generation and can be north-eastward continuation of the Permian-aged Almacık complex and the Boğazköy Metaophiolite fragment in the western Sakarya Composite Terrane. It may have been cut by intrusions of the extensive Middle Jurassic continental arc magmatism after its imbrication within the basement unit. The presence of pre-Middle Jurassic oceanic units may indicate that the Paleozoic ocean may have survived as the Jurassic Intra-Pontide Ocean between the Scythian Platform and Sakarya Composite Terrane during the Mesozoic time. Thus, the Intra-Pontide Suture may normally include the Palaeozoic and Mesozoic remnants of the long-lived northward subducting Tethyan ocean.

Geochemistry of the post-collisional Miocene mafic Tunceli Volcanics, Eastern Turkey: Implications for the nature of the mantle source and melting systematics

Aktağ, Alican; Önal, Ayten Öztüfekçi; Sayit, Kaan

The East Anatolian Accretionary Complex (EAAC) comprises an ideal example of post-collisional volcanism within the Africa-Eurasia collision zone. The Miocene mafic Tunceli Volcanics, as a part of this post-collisional volcanic system, are located in the western termination of EAAC. The mafic Tunceli Volcanics are characterized by mildly alkaline and tholeiitic basalts, in which olivine, clinopyroxene and plagioclase characterize the main mineralogy. The role of fractional crystallization (FC) and assimilation combined with fractional crystallization (AFC) processes appear to be negligible in the petrogenesis of the primitive mafic Tunceli Volcanics. Relative enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (LILE), Th and La over high field strength elements (HFSE) and heavy rare earth elements (HREE) suggest contribution from a metasomatized mantle source. The wide range of ratios displayed by these elements also calls for some asthenospheric input for the genesis of these volcanics. The metasomatizing agents can be attributed to a past subduction event, probably during the closure of Neotethys. Considering also the geophysical constraints, which limits the lithospheric thickness to about 70–75 km around the region, a melt mixing between lithospheric and asthenospheric melts generated at different depths appear to be an important process in the petrogenesis of these lavas. The combined geochemical and geophysical data, therefore, necessitate a geodynamic model with some remnant lithospheric mantle underlying the Eastern Anatolian region.

Electrical characterization of solar sensitive zinc oxide doped-amorphous carbon photodiode

Koç, Mümin Mehmet; Aslan, Naim; Erkovan, Mustafa; Aksakal, Bünyamin; Uzun, Orhan; Farooq, W. Aslam; Yakuphanoğlu, Fahrettin

A new solar-sensitive zinc oxide doped-amorphous carbon diode was fabricated using the electrochemical deposition technique. The current-voltage characteristics of the fabricated Al/ZnO-a:C/p-Si/Al diode were investigated under dark and various lighting intensities using both I-V and C-V methods. The fabricated diode was characterized by XRD, SEM-EDS, FTIR and XPS analysis. Through the analysis, it was determined that the photocurrents increased with increasing intensity of incident light. The capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics revealed that the capacitance of the diode depended on voltage, frequency and illumination, indicating the existence of a continuous distribution of interface states. It was found that the capacitance changed drastically with changing frequency and separation was observed in different frequencies, as identified in the reverse bias region. The ideality factor obtained was found to be higher than unity, with the average barrier height and ideality factor of the diode were found to be 0.528 ± 0.0069 eV and 5.24 ± 0.39, respectively. The newly fabricated ZnO-doped amorphous carbon (Al/ZnO-a:C/p-Si/Al) photodiode exhibited good solar sensitivity. The overall results indicated that the fabricated Al/ZnO-a:C/p-Si can be used as a solar sensitive diode in optoelectronic device applications as an alternative to graphene-based materials.

Optical solitons to the resonant nonlinear Schrödinger equation with both spatio-temporal and inter-modal dispersions under Kerr law nonlinearity

Bulut, Hasan; Sulaiman, Tukur Abdulkadir; Baskonus, Haci Mehmet

This study uses the extended sinh-Gordon equation expansion method in constructing various optical soliton solutions to the resonant nonlinear Schrödinger equation with both spatio-temporal and inter-modal dispersions. Resonant nonlinear Schrödinger equation expresses the propagation dynamics of optical solitons and Madelung fluids. Dark, bright, combined dark–bright and singular optical solitons are successfully constructed. Under the choice of suitable values of parameters, the two-dimensional, three-dimensional and the contour graphs to some of the acquired results are plotted. The reported results may be useful in explaining the physical meaning of the studied model.

Ethnopharmacological survey of medicinal plants in Karaisalı and its surrounding (Adana-Turkey)

Güneş, Suzan; Savran, Ahmet; Paksoy, Mehmet Yavuz; Koşar, Müberra; Çakılcıoğlu, Uğur

This study identifies wild plants collected for medical purposes by local people of Karaisalı County in the Mediterranean Region of Turkey, together with the uses and local names of these plants. A field study was carried out over a period of approximately 2 years (2008–2010). During this period, 129 vascular plant specimens were collected. Demographic characteristics of participants, local plant names, parts used and methods of preparation of the plants were investigated and recorded. Within the scope of the study, relevant plant species were collected; herbarium materials were prepared; and the specimens were labelled. In addition, the use-value of the species was determined and calculated for the medicinal plants included in the study. A total of 129 medical plants belonging to 59 families were identified in the region. The most common families were: Lamiaceae (14 plants), Asteraceae (11 plants), Rosaceae (10 plants), Apiaceae (5 plants), Euphorbiaceae (5 plants). A comparison of the data obtained in this study with experimental data obtained in previous laboratory studies, confirmed most of the ethnobotanical uses. The plant flora of Karaisalı is threatened by such factors as grazing, expansion of new agricultural lands, and unsustainable harvesting of plants to generate income. Steps should be taken immediately to ensure the inclusion of relevant flora within conservation designations.

New solitary and optical wave structures to the (1 + 1)-dimensional combined KdV–mKdV equation

Bulut, Hasan; Sulaiman, Tukur A.; Baskonus, Haci Mehmet; Sandulyak, Anna A.

In this article, we employ the sine-Gordon expansion method to construct a new solitary and optical wave structures to the (1 + 1)-dimensional combined KdV–mKdV equation. Sine-Gordon expansion method is developed based on the travelling wave transformation u(x, y) = U(ξ), ξ = μ(x − ct) and the sine-Gordon equation uxx − utt = m2 sin(u). We find the travelling wave solutions to (1 + 1)-dimensional combined KdV–mKdV equation in the form of complex, hyperbolic, trigonometric and rational function. Our results show that all the travelling wave solutions we obtain are solitary and optical wave structures solutions. All the computations and graphics plot in this article are carried out with the help of Wolfram Mathematica 9.

Characterisation of natural streams using community indices and basal resources of macroinvertebrates in the upper Euphrates Basin

Gültekin, Zuhal; Remmers, Wolfram; Aydin, Rahmi; Winkelmann, Carola; Hellmann, Claudia

The characterisation of natural stream conditions is the first important step to analyse ecological quality of streams in the Euphrates basin. We found that the community indices correspond to very good ecological conditions in five natural streams of that region. The macroinvertebrates composition differed significantly between September and May. Number of taxa and Shannon index were significantly higher in autumn than in spring. FPOM and biofilm were the most relevant basal resources of benthic invertebrates.
