Evaluation of physical and mechanical characteristics of siderite concrete to be used as heavy-weight concrete

    Esen, Yuksel; Dogan, Zulfu Murat

The objective of this study is to investigate the usability of siderite aggregates mentioned above as a heavy-weight aggregate in the heavy-weight concrete production and their effects on physical properties of the heavy-weight concrete mixture. For this purpose, normal-weight aggregate content was decreased at the rate of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% by volume of the concrete mixture prepared and mixtures were prepared by its substitution with siderite aggregate at the same rates. Based on the increase in siderite aggregate in the concrete mixture, a considerable increase in unit weight, compressive strength and tensile strength of concrete was obtained. Plate-shaped concrete specimens obtained from combined normal-weight and heavy-weight aggregates were exposed to radiation with different X-ray source (118 keV, 164 keV) and Co-60 (1250 keV) beam source at cekmece Nuclear Facility. It is clearly seen that the concrete mixture containing siderite aggregate improved 70% radiation absorption characteristics compared to that of the concrete mixture without siderite aggregate. Application of AHP and VIKOR methods under interval type 2 fuzzy environment in maritime transportation

Soner, Omer; Celik, Erkan; Akyuz, Emre

The aim of this paper is to provide not only a hybrid theoretical methodology in multiple-attribute decision making problems but also a practical application in maritime transportation industry. The proposed hybrid approach integrates Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method into VlseKriterijumska Optimizacijia I Kompromisno Resenje, (VIKOR) technique under interval type-2 fuzzy (IT2F) environment. While AHP and VIKOR provides a comprehensive framework to solve multiple-attribute decision making (MADM) problems in maritime transportation industry, the IT2F enables to deal with much uncertainty during linguistic assessment of decision-makers. The proposed approach is demonstrated with a hatch cover design selection problem since it has utmost importance in structure of bulk carrier ships to prevent water ingress and protect cargo form the external damages. Besides its robust theoretical insight, the paper has practical contribution to the naval engineers, classification societies and ship owners who have difficulty in deciding appropriate hatch cover type during construction of the ship.

Hybrid renewable energy systems considered as candidate solutions for environmental problems. Solar energy and wind energy are important components of these systems, but both of them cause fluctuations in the grid. Batteries of Electric Vehicles (EVs) can be connected to the grid to create an ancillary resource. These systems known as Vehicle to Grid (V2G) and they could be the most suitable solution to the fluctuation problems of renewable resources. In this paper, economic analysis of V2G is investigated from various perspectives. The findings of this study indicate that battery aging costs of a V2G system can be minimized with an intelligent energy management system, and these systems are both economically and environmentally better alternatives to fossil-fuelled generators.

    Onat, Onur; Celik, Erkan

Waste materials in concrete have been considered as one of the most important issues by the authorities, policy makers and researchers to maintain engineering serviceability in terms of economy, durability and sustainability. Therefore, evaluation and selection of waste materials with respect to multi criteria decision making (MCDM) for the construction industry has been gained importance for recovery and reuse. In this paper, Choquet integral based fuzzy approach is proposed for evaluating the most suitable waste materials with respect to compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, compactness, toughness (resistivity for dynamic loads), water absorption and accessibility. On conclusion, waste tyre and silica fume were determined as the most suitable waste materials for concrete production. The obtained results are recommended to assist the authorities on configuring well designed strategies for construction industry with disposal materials.

Gesoglu, Mehmet; Güneyisi, Erhan; Hansu, Osman; Etli, Serkan; Alhassan, Mahammed

This study addresses the mechanical and fracture properties of self-compacting concretes (SCCs) containing plastic waste (PW) powder in varying amounts used as a cement replacement material. Partial amount of cement was replaced by PW powder at 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% by weight so as to design six SCC mixtures with a constant slump flow of 700 ± 30 mm, total binder content of 550 kg/m3 and water-to-binder (w/b) ratio of 0.35. Mechanical characteristics of SCCs were tested for compressive and splitting tensile strengths, net flexural strength as well as modulus of elasticity at 28 day. Moreover, failure characteristics of the concrete were monitored via three-point bending test on the notched beams. The findings indicated that mechanical properties of PVC powder modified SCCs decreased while the concretes became less brittle.

Identifying key factors of rail transit service quality: An empirical analysis for Istanbul

Isikli, Erkan; Aydin, Nezir; Celik, Erkan; Gumus, Alev Taskin

Providing a high quality of service in public transportation is essential to reduce dissatisfactions stemming from traffic congestion and noise. Public transport providers need to find ways to dilute the effects of immoderate use of private cars in big cities while maintaining a sufficient level of customer satisfaction. This study aimed to identify the key service quality (SQ) factors that drive passenger satisfaction in Istanbul’s rail transit (RT) system using data obtained from an extensive survey conducted by the Istanbul Public Transportation Co. A total of 11,116 passengers who used rail transport from May 15-June 3, 2012, and June 17-July 3, 2013, were interviewed in person. The relative importance of the SQ factors was assessed so that service provision could be prioritized and the enhancement of passenger satisfaction can be achieved employing several social choice techniques. The results indicate that, from an overall perspective, waiting time, crowdedness in cars, and fare are the SQ factors that best reflect the public good.

A beam search approach for solving type II robotic parallel assembly line balancing problem

Çil, Zeynel Abidin; Mete, Süleyman; Özceylan, Eren; Ağpak, Kürşad

In a robotic assembly line, a series of stations are arranged along a conveyor belt and a robot performs on tasks at each station. Parallel assembly lines can provide improving line balance, productivity and so on. Combining robotic and parallel assembly lines ensure increasing flexibility of system, capacity and decreasing breakdown sensitivity. Although aforementioned benefits, balancing of robotic parallel assembly lines is lacking – to the best knowledge of the authors- in the literature. Therefore, a mathematical model is proposed to define/solve the problem and also iterative beam search (IBS), best search method based on IBS (BIBS) and cutting BIBS (CBIBS) algorithms are presented to solve the large-size problem due to the complexity of the problem. The algorithm also tested on the generated benchmark problems for robotic parallel assembly line balancing problem. The superior performances of the proposed algorithms are verified by using a statistical test. The results show that the algorithms are very competitive and promising tool for further researches in the literature.

An extended fuzzy TOPSIS-GRA method based on different separation measures for green logistics service provider selection

    Celik, E.; Erdogan, M.; Gumus, A. T.

In this paper, first, the criteria that make logistics service providers more green'' are determined as: cooperation with customer's company and its customer, green government regulations, environmental management system, green process design, reduction in energy consumption and green network design. The criteria weights are determined by fuzzy AHP, based on expert opinions. Then, a new method is proposed, which is the combination of fuzzy TOPSIS and GRA, and used to evaluate green 3PLs based on different separation measures, as an extension, using trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. Five Turkish 3PLs serve in Istanbul are selected in order to apply a case study to show the applicability of the proposed method. Finally, the proposed method is verified with respect to different resolving coefficient values and separation measures and also compared with fuzzy TOPSIS and fuzzy VIKOR method results. Different multi-criteria decision-making methods can be applied and compared to check validity of our results for future studies. The proposed method can also be implemented to 3PLs in other countries.

A solution approach based on beam search algorithm for disassembly line balancing problem

Mete, Süleyman; Çil, Zeynel Abidin; Ağpak, Kürşad; Özceylan, Eren; Dolgui, Alexandre

The disassembly line balancing (DLB) problem is the process of allocating a set of disassembly tasks to an ordered sequence of workstations in such a way that optimizes some performance measures (e.g., cycle time, number of stations). Since DLB problems belong to the class of NP hard, many heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithms are applied to cope with the complexity of the DLB problems in order to obtain acceptable solutions in a reasonable amount of time. In this study, a beam search (BS) based approach for the DLB problem is proposed. Minimization of number of workstations is used as the performance measure. The proposed algorithm is compared with the optimal solutions of well-known real cases and generated test problems. The results indicate that the proposed approach based on BS is a very competitive and promising tool for further researches.

Automatic classification of harmonic data using k-means and least square support vector machine

Eristi, Huseyin; Tümen, Vedat; Yildirim, Ozal; Eristi, Belkis; Demir, Yakup

In this paper, an effective classification approach to classify harmonic data has been proposed. In the proposed classifier approach, harmonic data obtained through a 3-phase system have been classified by using k-means and least square support vector machine (LS-SVM) models. In order to obtain class details regarding harmonic data, a k-means clustering algorithm has been applied to these data first. The training of the LS-SVM model has been realized with the class details obtained through the k-means algorithm. To increase the efficiency of the LS-SVM model, the regularization and kernel parameters of this model have been determined with a grid search method and the training phase has been realized. Backpropagation neural network and J48 decision tree classifiers have been applied to the same data and results have been obtained for the purpose of comparing the performance of the LS-SVM model. The real data obtained from the output of distribution system have been used to assess the performance of the proposed classifier system. The obtained results and comparisons suggest that the proposed classifier system approach is quite efficient at classifying harmonic data.

Automatic recognition system of underlying causes of power quality disturbances based on S-Transform and Extreme Learning Machine

Eristi, Huseyin; Yildirim, Ozal; Eristi, Belkis; Demir, Yakup

In this paper, a new S-Transform and Extreme Learning Machine (ST-ELM)-based event recognition approach for the purpose of classifying power quality (PQ) event signals automatically has been proposed. In this approach, the distinctive features of the PQ event signals have been obtained with the S-Transform-based feature extraction. The feature vector obtained with feature extraction has been applied as input to the ELM classifier. Ten different classification procedures were determined within the framework of this study to assess the performance of the ELM classifier on PQ event data. Real PQ event data and synthetic PQ event data obtained from MATIAB/Simulink environment have been used in these procedures. Also, three different PQ event data sets, which are formed by adding noises of 20, 30 and 50 dB to the synthetic PQ event data respectively, have been used in order to assess the performance of the proposed approach on noisy conditions. According to the results of performance evaluations, the proposed ST-ELM-based PQ event recognition system has a very high performance of recognizing PQ event data. Besides, classification of noisy data showed that the proposed approach is robust at recognizing noisy data. The performance of the ST-ELM-based recognition system on PQ data shows that this approach has an effective recognition structure that can be used in real power systems. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Fault diagnosis system for series compensated transmission line based on wavelet transform and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system

    Eristi, Huseyin

This paper proposes a new fault diagnosis approach based on combined wavelet transform and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system for fault section identification, classification and location in a series compensated transmission line. It performs an effective feature extraction approach based on norm entropy in order to obtain the features represented main frequency, harmonic and transient characteristics of the fault signals. The proposed method uses the samples of fault voltages and currents for one cycle duration from the inception of fault. The feasibility of the proposed method has been tested on a 400 kV, 300 km series compensated transmission line for all the ten types of faults using MATLAB/Simulink for a large data set of 23,436 fault cases comprising of all the 10 types of faults. Fault signals varying with fault resistance, fault inception angle, fault distance, load angle, percentage compensation level and source impedance are applied to the proposed algorithm. The results also indicate that the proposed method is robust to wide variation in system conditions and has higher fault diagnosis accuracy with regard to the other approaches in the literature for this problem.
