    Mete, Suleyman; Serin, Faruk

A fundamental problem concerning medical waste disposal is the evaluation of the real and potential risks arising from waste with the focus on the risk of infection. Therefore, the optimization of medical waste routing from collection to disposal center can minimize the risk of infection. The routing of medical waste considers significant to determine potential routes and select the route with minimum distance. The management of the medical waste is important decision for environmental sustainability and includes the collection, transportation and disposal of these materials. In this paper, a geographic information system (GIS) solution approach is proposed to determine the best location of disposal center. Proposed approach is applied to medical waste transportation between 167 health institutions (collection centers) and predetermined 5 disposal centers through TRB1 region in Turkey, which consist of Malatya, Elazığ, Bingöl and Tunceli provinces. The results of case study are examined and suggestions for future research are provided.

Sales Forecast with YSA, ARIMA and ARIMAX Methods: An Application in the White Goods Sector

    Yucesan, Melih

The white goods sector is one of the locomotive sectors of the country due to the contributions of employment and exports. The technological developments and globalization experienced in recent years are among the sectors that are affected by the changing and competitive conditions. Efficient production planning; must meet the current demand in time and with minimal cost. Determining the current demand is possible with a good sales forecast. In this sense, sales forecasting plays an important role in the success of decision makers. In this study, the sales forecast model for the white goods sector was proposed. The 46 months’ sales data have been used for dishwashers, refrigerators, small house appliances and televisions. The exchange rate, holiday days, consumer confidence index, producer price index, housing sales in the region are used as explanatory variable. It can be said that the most accurate estimates are obtained by using the ANN method when mean squared error (MSE) compared which is the performance criterion.

Senel, Mine; Senel, Bilgin; Havle, Celal Alpay; Cattani, C; Atangana, A; Bulut, H; Hammouch, Z; Baskonus, HM; Mekkaoui, T; Agoujil, S

Today, international trade is extremely important for countries' economies. It is possible to show the ship's transport as one of the most important execution channels of this trade. International commercial maritime transport subject to many rules and regulations carries many risks in processes such as loading, handling and unloading. Commercial ports are the places where these risks are seen intensely. From this point, many risk components in terms of the process in the port, one of the international commercial port in Turkey, based on a risk analysis is tried to be evaluated in this study. Especially, loading and unloading processes are focused with the directions of industrial experts. The main dimensions of the risks in the port are determined via expert opinions, and the sub-criteria of these dimensions are revealed. In this way, a generic model is proposed based on failure mode and effect analysis and the model is digitized using intuitionistic fuzzy TOPSIS. Interpretations are made in the direction of the obtained analysis results.

Risk Assessment with Failure Mode and Effects Analysis and Grey Relational Analysis Method in Plastic Injection Process

Ünlükal, Ceren; Senel, Mine; Senel, Bilgin; Cattani, C; Atangana, A; Bulut, H; Hammouch, Z; Baskonus, HM; Mekkaoui, T; Agoujil, S

This study aims to evaluate the risks that may arise during the production process in a plastic injection manufacturing enterprise with traditional Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) and Grey Relational Analysis (GRA). Although it is a widely used analytical technique that helps to identify and reduce the risks of failure in a process, the Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) has some drawbacks that the different risks can have the same risk priority values and the weight of risk factors is not take into consideration. This situation has been tried to be eliminated by integrating the FMEA with the GRA. As a result, it is seen that the order of risk priority values of the identified failure changes according to both methods.

Forward supply Chain network design problem: Heuristic approaches

Koc, Cagri; Özceylan, Eren; Kesen, Saadettin Erhan; Çil, Zeynel Abidin; Mete, Suleyman

Determining positions and counting of actors, amount of product flowbetween and decreasing transportation costs are handled as a networkdesign problem in supply chain management. Supply chain networkdesign (SCND) problem belongs to the class of NP-hard problems. It hastherefore appealed to a number of researchers’ close attention. However, existing literature lacks of common benchmark instances forforward SCND problems so as to make a fair comparison betweendeveloped and applied heuristic approaches. To this end, 450 newbenchmark instances ranging from small to large size for forward SCNDproblems with two, three and four-echelon are generated and amathematical model for each of the problems is formulated. Due to thecomplexity issues, we develop two heuristic solution approaches, geneticalgorithm (GA) and hybrid heuristic algorithm (HHA), and we applythem to the large pool of benchmark instances. Comparativeexperiments show that both the GA and HHA can yield feasible solutionsin much less computational time and, in particular, outperforms CPLEXregarding the solution quality as the number of echelon grows.

Investigation of Earthquake Behaviour of Construction System and Materials in Traditional Turkish Architecture

Yardimli, Seyhan; Dal, Murat; Mihlayanlar, Esma; Cattani, C; Atangana, A; Bulut, H; Hammouch, Z; Baskonus, HM; Mekkaoui, T; Agoujil, S

In this study, it is aimed to present a point of view regarding the behaviour of construction systems implemented in traditional Turkish architecture against earthquakes. In the scope of the study, examples of civil architecture were considered and their structures were evaluated as building elements such as foundation, wall and flooring. Traditional Turkish architecture construction systems can be evaluated in two parts. One of them is the wooden carcass system and the other is the unreinforced masonry system. In the wooden carcass system, the carrier is the load bearing elements used in horizontal and vertical directions. Intermediate parts (strut, diagonal etc.) are placed between these elements to form triangles. The triangles (strut, diagonal) used in the wooden skeleton system comprise highly resistant forms against earthquakes. Moreover, due to the internal structure and physical properties of the wood, which is the skeleton material, the flexibility that it maintains can meet the lateral loads of earthquakes. The second construction system which is the system addressed in this application, is the unreinforced masonry system. In this system, the loadbearing system itself is the walls, which are not resistant to lateral loads. In order to provide this flexibility beams (hatillar) are installed at certain intervals. After the wall is built to a certain height, a different material is laid allowing a plane of movement on the wall. Thus, when the wall is exposed to a lateral load, it escapes from the planes where the beams (hatillar) are present, and is protected against large damages by absorbing the earthquake load. In order to establish that the foundation of the structure can withstand earthquakes by movement, wood is placed at the lower part of the foundation above a layer of sand ensuring lateral movement and flexibility of the building. In traditional buildings the slabs are connected to the building walls with beams (hatillar). Through the agency of the beams (hatillar) formed at the connection points, the slabs can act as a mass so that they can meet the earthquake load. Allowing the structure to move makes it resistant to earthquakes, seismic isolators are used for this purpose by absorbing the earthquake load and moving the foundation of the structure.

Seismic assessment of existing RC buildings before and after shear-wall retrofitting

Onat, Onur; Yön, Burak; Calayir, Yusuf

The existing reinforced concrete (RC) buildings are analysed in the paper before and after shear-wall retrofitting. For numerical application, an existing RC building was selected and retrofitted with shear walls. Incremental dynamic analyses and static pushover analysis of these buildings were performed using the distributed plastic hinge approach. The results show that seismic retrofitting with shear walls increases rigidity and capacity of the building, while decreasing lateral displacements and damage.

Design, analysis, and control of in-wheel switched reluctance motor for electric vehicles

    Omaç, Z.; Polat, M.; Öksüztepe, E.; Yıldırım, M.; Yakut, O.; Eren, H.; Kaya, M.; Kürüm, H.

Estimation of dimension parameters for an electric machine has great importance before assembling on production line. As a matter of fact, researchers should find optimum solution once they decide to perform analytical design of an electric machine. In this study, we have tried to find dimensional and electrical parameters via derived mathematical equations for in-wheel switched reluctance motor (IW-SRM), and the motor has been manufactured. Moreover, an experimental setup is designed, and the speed and torque control of IW-SRM is carried out. The motor tests including both standstill and running test are performed by using the experimental setup. Initial size parameters are intuitively provided as motor analysis is conducted by software package. Then, numerous trials are examined to get optimum results. In fact, this motor is employed by an electric vehicle whose design is ongoing. Therefore, optimum motor parameters for required base speed and torque have been estimated by solving generated equations for IW-SRM with 18/12 poles via MATLAB. Considering parameters estimated, analysis of IW-SRM has been performed by Ansoft Maxwell 15.0 Software Package based on 3D finite element method (3D-FEM). Consequently, the estimated parameters have been validated by the results of Maxwell 3D FEM. Experimental results of the motor manufactured are obtained via the motor driver designed; also have been validated by Maxwell 3D.

Fuzzy rule-based Fine–Kinney risk assessment approach for rail transportation systems

    Gul, Muhammet; Celik, Erkan

Rail transportation is one of the most crucial public transportation types for big and crowded cities. In rail transportation systems, stakeholders face serious issues involved in workshops, stations, lines and their environments, and general office buildings. In order to reach an increased awareness and better occupational health and safety (OHS) management, a new risk assessment approach is proposed in this study. This approach includes a combination of Fine–Kinney method and a fuzzy rule-based expert system. It captures nonlinear causal relationships between Fine–Kinney parameters. Since there is a high level of vagueness involved in the OHS risk assessment data, the rule-based expert system is developed for probability (P), exposure (E), and consequence (C) for evaluating risk score. A case study is carried out in a rail transportation system in Istanbul/Turkey, and a comparison with the classical Fine–Kinney method is discussed. Results of the case study reveal risk clusters and corresponding control measures that should be taken into consideration. The study methodologically contributes to risk assessment in the knowledge, while case study in a real rail transportation system offers an insight into public transport industry in safety improvement.

Location and coverage analysis of bike-sharing stations in university campus

Mete, Suleyman; Cil, Zeynel Abidin; Özceylan, Eren

Background: Bike-sharing programmes have become popular in a large number of cities in order to facilitate bicycle use. Determining the location of bike sharing stations is vital to success of these programmes. Objectives: In this paper, a case study is applied to the Gaziantep University campus in order to find possible locations of the stations for users (students). The purpose is to minimize the total walking distance. Methods/Approach: Set and maximal covering mathematical models are considered to decide on coverage capability of determined 20 demand points and 20 potential bike stations. Then, the mathematical models of P-center and P-median are used to build possible stations and to allocate demand points to the opened stations. Finally, an undesirable facility location model is used to find the bike stations, which have the maximum distance from demand nodes, and to eliminate them. Results: In computational results, it is clearly seen that the proposed approaches set the potential bike station covering all demand points. They also provide different solutions for the campus planners. Conclusions: The methodology outlined in this study can provide university administrators with a useful insight into locations of stations, and in this way, it contributes significantly to future planning of bike-sharing systems.

An optimisation support for the design of hybrid production lines including assembly and disassembly tasks

Mete, Süleyman; Çil, Zeynel Abidin; Özceylan, Eren; Ağpak, Kürşad; Battaïa, Olga

The optimisation problems related to the assignment of tasks to workstations in assembly and disassembly lines have been largely discussed in the literature. They are known, respectively, as Assembly Line Balancing and Disassembly Line Balancing Problems. In this study, both types of task performed on the identical product are integrated in a common hybrid production system. Therefore, the logistic process is simplified and disassembly tasks can supply easier the assembly tasks with the required components. The considered production system has the layout of two parallel lines with common workstations. The product flow is conventional in the assembly line and reverse in the disassembly line. The paper provides a new mathematical model for designing such a hybrid system and an approximate approach based on ant colony optimisation for solving large-scale instances. The solution method is tested in a case study. The obtained results are compared with the solution provided by the design of two independent lines. The analysis of the results highlights the potential benefits of the hybrid production system.

A new embedded power quality event classification system based on the wavelet transform

Eristi, Belkis; Yildirim, Ozal; Eristi, Huseyin; Demir, Yakup

In this paper, a real time embedded intelligent recognition system is proposed for diagnosing the power quality problems. The intelligent recognition system has a structure capable of classifying and detecting the power quality problems in real time. Hardware applications of the wavelet transform and decision tree classifier are realized inside the recognition system using with field programmable gate array (FPGA) device. These methods operating as embedded in the FPGA environment provide real-time diagnosis of power quality problems. A new approach of this recognition system is its capability to simultaneously detect a power quality event in the power systems and power quality disturbances occurring on each phase following the event. In this paper, 2 different recognition systems that online and offline are presented. The online recognition system operates in the fields with signal processing and classification structures embedded. In the offline system, the distinctive features of the event signals obtained from the online system are used and these signals are classified in the computer environment by means of the least square support vector machines. A prototype model of the power system is created in the laboratory environment in order to test the FPGA-based online intelligent recognition system, determine accuracy rates and evaluate its performance. Power quality event types are created in wide parameter ranges on this model. Obtained results from both recognition systems indicated the hardware and software designs of our embedded systems are quite effective, fast, and have high success performance.

Assessment of the combined in-plane and out-of-plane behavior of brick infill walls within reinforced concrete frames under seismic loading

Onat, Onur; Correia, António A.; Lourenço, Paulo B.; Koçak, Ali

Understanding the out-of-plane response of masonry infill walls and preventing their progressive collapse mechanisms is very important for earthquake-prone countries to prevent loss of life and economic loss. In fact, having a realistic collapse mechanism assessment allows suitable prevention measures to be adopted. With this purpose in mind, two full-scale one-bay one-story substructures of reinforced concrete frames (RCF) with infill walls were tested on a shake table. These 2 specimens were designed to represent the response of a typical RC Frame at the fifth floor of an 8-story building, namely the out-of-plane failure of its infill wall under combined bidirectional seismic load. Both specimens were composed of a single-leaf clay brick infill wall surrounded by the RC Frame. However, while the first specimen corresponds to an unreinforced masonry configuration, the second specimen includes horizontal bed joint reinforcement as a strengthening/retrofitting technique. The main novelty of this study is the application of a bidirectional and simultaneous dynamic loading to the specimen, such that in-plane and out-of-plane effects are evaluated together. This work presents several interesting experimental results, with particular emphasis on the bearing capacity of the specimens against out-of-plane failure. As expected, the in-plane capacity of the reinforced infill specimen is larger than that of the unreinforced infill specimen. Nevertheless, the out-of-plane bearing capacities of the two specimens are very similar, in contrast to their ductility capacity, which is significantly increased in the reinforced masonry specimen. The capacities of the two specimens for both in-plane and out-of-plane directions, as predicted by formulations in the literature, are given. The differences found between these calculations and the results of the tests are discussed, and may possibly be explained by the parameters considered in the different formulations.

Transmission line fault location using traveling wave frequencies and extreme learning machine

Akmaz, Düzgün; Mamiş, Mehmet Salih; Arkan, Müslüm; Tağluk, Mehmet Emin

In this research, a new approach was proposed for determining the fault location in transmission lines. Traveling wave frequencies and an extreme learning machine (ELM) were used to determine fault location. Transient signals in the time domain were transformed to the frequency domain using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and the traveling wave frequencies were detected from the transient frequency spectrum. In order to detect the location of fault, traveling wave frequency was used initially to predict the fault location. The prediction of this fault location was tested for many different fault conditions and was found to be adversely affected by only the source inductance value. This is due to the negative effect of source inductance on wave velocity. Regression feature of ELM was used in order to improve the prediction of fault location and to minimize the negative effect of source inductance. For ELM regression training, values of the fault distance estimated from the traveling-wave frequencies and the source inductance values were used as ELM input data, and the actual distance values were used as ELM output data. After ELM regression training, ELM predicted a new fault location using the input data. The Alternative Transients Program (ATP/EMTP) was used to model J. Marti frequency dependent line model, and the MATLAB program was used to perform fault-detection algorithms. Simulation results show that the proposed method is very successful against many variables such as different fault resistances, source inductances, transmission line characteristics, transmission line lengths.

Recognition of road type and quality for advanced driver assistance systems with deep learning

Tumen, Vedat; Yildirim, Ozal; Ergen, Burhan

To develop effective advanced driving assistance systems, it is important to accurately recognize current driving environments and make critical decisions about driving processes. Preventing accidents through the interaction between the driving assistance systems and the environment and ensuring optimum driving dynamics are the main topics in this field. Vehicles need to recognize the road type and quality at a high accuracy to ensure the most suitable driving for the road type. It is also important to use both uncomplicated and cost-effective systems when performing this detection. In this study, a deep learning-based approach that can be used in vehicle driver assistance systems is proposed to automatically recognize road type and quality. Using this approach, it is possible to determine the road type and the quality of the road using only driving images as the input data. A new convolutional neural network model is designed for classification of the driving images. Driving images obtained from Google Street View are used to evaluate the recognition system for an actual driving environment. The proposed approach shows that the road types were determined with accuracy of 91.41 %, and the pothole road–smooth road distinction was successful at 91.07 %. It can be said that the proposed method is an effective structure that can be used for advanced driving support systems, V2I communications systems, and similar intelligent transportation systems.

An Agent-Based Pythagorean Fuzzy Approach for Demand Analysis with Incomplete Information

    Baloglu, Ulas Baran; Demir, Yakup

Analyzing demand in environments with incomplete information is a challenging task. This paper proposes a novel agent-based Pythagorean fuzzy approach for analyzing this kind of demand. First, a Bayesian game is described with a large number of finite players, and this is followed by a Pythagorean fuzzy-based decision mechanism. Unlike the classical methods in the literature, the proposed method in this paper neither assumes nor forecasts the demand in a system. Instead, it tries to analyze the demand when there is limited availability of input data, or processing data are computationally expensive. The study ends with an application of the proposed system to an electricity grid. Electricity prices used as an incentive to construct an agent-based system that efficiently reduces the peak amounts in a smart grid by analyzing the demand. Test results provide evidence that the proposed approach is promising to design demand response systems.

Lightweight privacy-preserving data aggregation scheme for smart grid metering infrastructure protection

    Baloglu, Ulas Baran; Demir, Yakup

The electric industry's planned shift to smart grid metering infrastructure raised several concerns especially about preserving the privacy. Various data perturbation and aggregation solutions are being developed to address these concerns. The drawback of these solutions is that a simple random noise scheme cannot protect privacy, and there is a need for more advanced perturbation techniques to increase hardware costs of smart metering devices. The proposed data aggregation scheme combines the power of perturbation techniques with crypto-systems in an efficient and lightweight way so that it becomes applicable for devices with limited hardware, such as smart meters. We investigated the privacy preserving capabilities of the proposed aggregation scheme with Holt-Winters and Seasonal Trend Decomposition using Loess prediction methods. The results indicate that the proposed scheme is resilient to both filtering and true value attacks.

An interval type-2 fuzzy AHP and TOPSIS methods for decision-making problems in maritime transportation engineering: The case of ship loader

    Celik, Erkan; Akyuz, Emre

Duration of cargo operation (loading or discharging) is of paramount importance for ship owners and port managers since idle time at terminal significantly boost to the cost of providing shipping service. Hence, it is important to choose the appropriate shiploader type for handling bulk materials. This paper aims to present a comprehensive multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) method extended by interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2FSs) for selecting appropriate shiploader type in maritime transportation. The proposed approach incorporates Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) under IT2FSs environment to overcome more of the uncertainty of experts’ judgement and expression in decision-making. The proposed approach adopts a sensitivity analysis to investigate the impact of key performance indicator (KPI) under numerous conditions. Besides its robust theoretical background, this paper prompts practical benefits to decision-makers (port owners or port managers) who make investment decision for appropriate shiploader type in dry bulk cargo shipment.

Investigation of Low-Temperature Behavior of Stone Mastic Asphalt Mixtures Modified with Paraffin and Crumb Rubber

Akpolat, Mustafa; Kök, Baha Vural; Yilmaz, Mehmet

In hot mix asphalts at low temperatures, cracks occur due to thermal tension and these cracks cause water to leak inside the pavement and the pavement gets deformed sooner than expected. In order to improve the properties of bituminous mixtures, mostly polymer type additives are used in the modification of the bitumen. These types of improvements usually have positive effects on the high-temperature behavior of the mixture. In this study, semi-circular bending test, which is the most commonly used method in the literature to investigate the low-temperature behavior of bituminous mixtures, was performed. In the study, the resistance of stone mastic asphalt mixtures, which were prepared with modified bitumen with a constant 3% of paraffin and various amounts of crumb rubber, to crack formation and its movement was identified. As a result, it was concluded that the effects of additives on crack formation and its movement is varied and the relation between the fractured aggregate surface areas and the fracture toughness of the mixture can be determined by the image processing method.
