Effect of Lutein/Zeaxanthin Isomers on the Musclin Signaling Pathway

Sahin, Kazim; Er, Besir; Erten, Fusun

Lutein (L) and zeaxanthin (Zi) are plant origin carotenoids. They have anti-inflammatory and\rantioxidant effects. Musclin is a myokine induced by physical activity. The aim of this study was to\rinvestigate the effect of L/Zi supplementation on serum and skeletal muscle musclin levels in rats\rsubjected to physical exercise. For this purpose, the rats were divided into four groups, each\rconsisting of seven rats, as the control group, no exercise, L/Zi treated and no exercise group\r(L/Zi), exercise group (E), and L/Zi treated and exercise group (E + L/Zi treatment). L/Zi was\radministered daily for eight weeks as an oral supplement by gavage at a dose level of 100 mg/kg\rBW. When compared with control, E, L/Zi and E + L/Zi decreased muscle triglyceride level by\r30.8%, 28.3% and 57.4%, respectively and increased serum and muscle musclin levels by 58.03%,\r67.4%, 136.5% and 49.4%, 50.1%, 85.6% respectively. In conclusion, it was determined that\rskeletal muscle and systemic musclin levels were stimulated by L/Zi combination in rats subjected\rto chronic exercise

Hydrogenosomes in the Anaerobic Fungi: Hydrogen-Producing Organelles

Yazdıç, Ferit Can; Yazdıç, Fadime; Kar, Bülent; Ozkose, Emin; Ekinci, Mehmet Sait

Fungi form a very diverse group in eukaryotes. Most of the fungi contain mitochondria and capable of oxidative phosphorylation. On the other hand, anaerobic Neocallimastigomycota fungi are in the gastrointestinal tract of many herbivorous mammals, they contain an organelle known as hydrogenosome instead of mitochondria. These organelles capable of being the key to adaptation to an anaerobic environment that is is unique. In this review, we wish to briefly summarize what is known about function, structure, biochemistry, genetics properties and inheritance of these important organelles.

The Effect of N-Acetylcysteine on Oxidant/Antioxidant Status in Irradiated Rats

Baykara, Murat; Özçelik, Mehtap; Erisir, Mine; Guler, Osman

N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) is both a strong antioxidant and a glutathione precursor. The effect of NAC on the oxidant/antioxidant status of some tissues of the irradiated rats was investigated. Twenty one rats were assigned to 3 groups; the control group, the irradiation group, for which physiological saline solution was administered as i.p. for three days and then, 9 Gy gamma irradiation was applied, and 3rdirradiation + NAC group for which NAC was adminis-tered as i.p. for three days as 300 mg/kg body weight and then the same dose of irradiation was applied. Upon irradia-tion, the increase determined in malondialdehyde (MDA) was significant in the liver, kidney, and brain tissues of the rats (P˂0.05). While glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity decreased in all of the tissues and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity only in the liver (P˂0.01), glutathione (GSH) levels significantly increased in the kidney and ovarium tissues (P˂0.001). While NAC administration returned the increased MDA levels in the kidney and brain as a result of irradiation to normal levels (P˂0.05), it was determined that it did not return the increased MDA levels in the liver tissue to the normal level (P˂0.001). While NAC addition led to a significant increase in GSH levels of the liver, heart, spleen, brain and ovarium tissues compared to both control and irradiation groups, it caused a significant decrease in the kid-ney tissue compared to irradiation group (P˂0.001). As a result of NAC addition, a significant decrease was determined in spleen GSH-Px activity, heart and ovarium SOD activity compared to control and irradiation groups (P˂0.05). It can be asserted that GSH increasing by the addition of NAC is the main antioxidant that has a role in decreasing oxidative stress occurring as a result of irradiation. In the examination of MDA values, it was found that the addition of NAC pro-tected the kidney and brain against the oxidative damage induced by irradiation but NAC addition could remain insuffi-cient for the liver.

Sığırların normal doğum ve güç doğumunda eritrosit arginaz aktivitesi ve plazma nitrik oksit düzeylerinin karşılaştırılması

Kandemir, Fatih Mehmet; Yüksel, Murat; Benzer, Fulya; Erişir, Mine; Hanedan, Başak

This study was aimed to investigate erythrocyte arginase activity and plasma nitric oxide (NO)levels in dystocia and normal calving of cows and compare these parameters. The study materialconsisted of 16 cows, 3 8 years old, brought for parturition at term to the Clinic of Obstetrics andGynecology at F ı rat University. Blood samples of cows normally calving and dystocia were takeninto blood collecting tubes with heparin from the jugular vein in the first half hour after delivery andcentrifuged at 3000 rpm for 10 minutes. Plasma NO levels and erythrocyte arginase activities weremeasured. The erythrocyte arginase activity in cows normally calving was significantly increasedcompared to that in cows with dystocia (P<0.01), and the plasma NO level in cows normally calvingwas significantly decreased compared to that in cows with dystocia (P<0.05). It was concluded thatthe lower erythrocyte arginase activity and higher plasma NO level in cows might play a role indystocia.
