Background: Jujube is an important fruit species due to its high nutritional value and health benefits. However, the short shelf life of fruit causes quality losses, making it difficult to trade. This study was conducted to determine the effects of postharvest methyl jasmonate (MeJA) applications on the fruit quality and biochemical properties of ‘Li’ jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) cultivar. In the study, fruits were pre-cooled at 7 °C and 85 ± 5% humidity for 24 h and those with diseases, pests, and mechanical damage were eliminated. Then, MeJA was applied to the fruits at concentrations of 0.2 mM and 0.4 mM and stored at 0 ± 0.5 °C and 90 ± 5% humidity for 45 days and analyzes were performed at 15-day intervals. Results: This study showed that MeJA applications positively affected the postharvest quality of jujube fruit. MeJA-applied fruits exhibited lower weight loss and lower respiration rates, and MeJA applications helped preserve fruit color and maintained fruit firmness for a longer time. MeJA was effective in maintaining the total phenolic and flavonoid content in fruit content and the loss of vitamin C content was lower with MeJA application. MeJA was effective for determining soluble solids content (SSC), and titratable acidity and delayed ripening in fruit. Conclussion: MeJA application increases the commercial value of fruits by reducing weight loss, slowing down the ripening process, and preserving higher nutritional content and antioxidant activities and suggest that it can be used as a feasible method for improving fruit protection strategies. MeJA application stands out as an effective method for extending the shelf life of jujube fruits by preserving their post-harvest quality and nutritional values.

Zengin, Gokhan; Fernández-Ochoa, Álvaro; de la Luz Cádiz-Gurrea, María; Jiménez, Francisco-Javier Leyva; Uba, Abdullahi Ibrahim; Ak, Gunes; Soomro, Sanam Iram; Balos, Maruf; Cakilcioglu, Ugur; Rodrigues, Maria João

The members of the genus Centaurea have a great interest in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical fields due to their biological potential. Based on this information, we aimed to evaluate the biological properties (antioxidant, enzyme inhibition and cytotoxicity) and chemical profile of the extract of Centaurea stapfiana, an unstudied species. The highest total phenolic content was found in the ethanol/water extract with 32.17 mg GAE/g. A total of 102 of them were identified by HPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS analysis. These compounds were mainly hydroxybenzoic acid and hydroxycinnamic acid as well as flavonoids. In the antioxidant tests, the ethanol/water extract had the best free radical scavenging and reducing ability. However, in the enzyme inhibition test, the ethanol extract was the most active. The extracts were also tested on two tumour cell lines (RAW 264.7 and HepG2) and one non-tumour cell line (S17). The ethanol extract showed the promising effect on HepG2 (cell viability: 28.6 % at 50 g/ml). Furthermore, we examined the interactions between the compounds and enzymatic and cellular targets. A good interaction was found between quercetin-3-xylosyl-(1- > 6)-glucoside and iNOS. In summary, our results suggest that C. stapfiana can be considered as a versatile raw material for the development of health-promoting applications in the pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical fields.

Antioxidant and Enzyme Inhibitory Properties, and HPLC–MS/MS Profiles of Different Extracts of Arabis carduchorum Boiss.: An Endemic Plant to Turkey

Uba, Abdullahi Ibrahim; Zengin, Gokhan; Montesano, Domenico; Cakilcioglu, Ugur; Selvi, Selami; Ulusan, Musa Denizhan; Caprioli, Giovanni; Sagratini, Gianni; Angeloni, Simone; Jugreet, Sharmeen

In this study, six extracts of Arabis carduchorum prepared from solvents of varying polarity (water, methanol, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, and n‐hexane) were investigated for their chemical profiles and total phenolic and flavonoid contents (TPC/TFC) using HPLC–MS/MS and spectrophotometric/colorimetric assays, respectively, along with the assessment of their antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory effects. In general, the polar extracts (methanol, water, and infusion) showed higher TPC/TFC than the other extracts (range:13.73–26.62 mg GAE/g; 2.66–52.95 mg RE/g, respectively). The total antioxidant capacity of the polar extracts ranged from 0.90–1.85 mmol TE/g in phosphomolybdenum assay, while the free radical scavenging potential ranged from 4.36–32.13 mg TE/g and 12.58–67.73 mg TE/g in DPPH and ABTS assays, respectively. While the water and infuse extract inhibited only butyrylcholinesterase (2.68 and 2.39 mg GALAE/g, respectively), the other extracts were found to inhibit both acetyl‐ and butyryl‐cholinesterases (0.96–2.73 mg GALAE/g and 1.86–5.11 mg GALAE/g, respectively). On the contrary, all extracts exhibited anti‐tyrosinase (40.24– 59.22 mg KAE/g) and anti‐amylase (0.09–0.63 mmol ACAE/g) activities. Overall, this study highlighted the effect of solvent polarity on the extraction of bioactive compounds and the biological properties of the extracts of A. carduchorum; hence, the results obtained could be used to guide optimum extraction in future studies.

Emre, Irfan; Kursat, Murat; Kirbag, Sevda; Erecevit, Pinar; Emre, Mustafa Yunus; Yilmaz, Okkes; Civelek, Semsettin

The aim of current study is to show phenolics, antioxidant capacities and antimicrobial activities of seeds of five Salvia L. (S. frigida Boiss., S. candidissima subsp. candidissima Vahl., S. virgata Jacq., S. verticillata L. var. verticillata and S. russellii Benth.) taxa grown in Turkey. The flavonoid and phenolic acid contents were measured by using HPLC whilst the antioxidant capacities were determined by using different methods. In addition, agar well diffusion method was used to determine the antimicrobial activities of Salvia species in this study. It was found that S. frigida, S. verticillata var. verticillata and S. russellii have the highest catechin contents and S. frigida and S. verticillata var. verticillata have high rosmarinic acid while S. frigida, S. candidissima subsp. candidissima and S. verticillata var. verticillata have high vanilic acid. Also, it was determined that S. frigida and S. verticillata var. verticillata have high DPPH radical scavenging activities in 150 and 250 µL while S. frigida and S. verticillata var. verticillata have highest ABTS radical scavenging activity in all concentrations apart from 25 µL for S. frigida. Furthermore, S. frigida and S. verticillata var. verticillata have high total phenolic contents. On the other hand, Salvia species have similar lipid peroxidation inhibitions. However, the metal chelating activities of Salvia species are different. And also, it was demonstrated that Salvia taxa have antimicrobial activity.

A comparative assessment of biological activities of Gundelia dersim Miller and Gundelia glabra Vitek, Yüce & Ergin extracts and their chemical characterization via HPLC-ESI-TOF-MS

de la Luz Cádiz-Gurrea, María; Zengin, Gokhan; Leyva-Jiménez, Francisco Javier; Fernández-Ochoa, Álvaro; Sinan, Kouadio Ibrahime; Cakilcioglu, Ugur; Babacan, Ebru Yuce; Mahomoodally, Mohamad Fawzi; Picot-Allain, Carene; Xiao, Jianbo

Plants from the Gundelia genus have been well appraised as both food and remedies. The members of the Gundelia genus are widely used as foods in several countries including Turkey. This study presents a comparative assessment of two poorly studied Gundelia species (G. glabra Miller and G. dersim Vitek, Yüce & Ergin). The effect of conventional (infusion, maceration, and Soxhlet extraction) and non-conventional (homogeniser and ultrasound assisted extraction) methods of extraction of bioactive secondary metabolites from the selected Gundelia species was also assessed. A total of 68 different compounds were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-TOF-MS) technique. Non-conventional extraction techniques do not guarantee higher antioxidant activity. As such, G. dersim (91.27, 138.87, 182.28, and 125.65 mg TE [Trolox equivalent]/g dried extract, for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS), cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays, respectively). The highest α-glucosidase inhibition was recorded for the extracts obtained by ultrasonication. In the multivariate analysis, the extracts from Gundelia species were separated based on their biological activities. The presented findings could be one methodological starting point for designing novel products from two Gundelia species.
