Yılmaz, Ersen; Boztuğ, Ali; Ul Haq, Hameed; Boczkaj, Grzegorz; Altunay, Nail
The purpose of this study was to develop a selective sorbent for cadmium ions (Cd(II)) enrichment in orbital shaker assisted solid phase microextraction (OS-SPME) from different aqueous and food samples. A maleic anhydride-styrene-glycidyl methacrylate (MA-St-GMA) terpolymer was synthesized and characterized in detail. Experimental variables of sample preparation step were optimized using a central composite design (CCD). The final determination step was performed using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS). The MA-St-GMA sorbent exhibited a high adsorption capacity (195.9 mg g−1) for the Cd(II) ion. The developed method under optimal conditions provides satisfactory performance and a significant improvement compared to other protocols available in the literature. The linear range and detection limit of the method is 0.1–130 ng mL−1 and 0.03 ng mL−1, respectively. The robustness, intraday/interday precision, selectivity, and accuracy of the method were investigated. To further validate the method, a dedicated series of analysis was performed using certified reference materials (CRMs). This part of the study confirmed the applicability of the method for routine analysis. The OS-SPME-FAAS method was validated using water and food samples. Relative standard deviations and recovery for real-world samples were in ranges 1.7–2.2 % and 95.5–98.5 %, respectively. As a result, the MA-St-GMA sorbent showed that it could quantitatively extract Cd(II) ions from aqueous solution.

Topal, Murat; Arslan Topal, E. Işıl; Öbek, Erdal; Aslan, Ali
In this chapter, potential human health risk of the heavy metals associated with usage of Cetraria islandica were evaluated. Heavy metals (lead, cadmium, manganese, chromium, copper, zinc, and nickel) were determined in Cetraria islandica. Highest and lowest heavy metal values were 87 ± 4.3 mg/kg for manganese (Mn) and 0.12 ± 0.01 mg/kg for cadmium (Cd). When potential health risk was assessed, the doses of exposure for man, woman, and child followed the order of bread > tea > dermal. Risk of health for bread and tea were child > woman > man. Also, risk of health for dermal was woman > child > man. Non-carcinogenic risk was woman > child > man for dermal way. Non-carcinogenic risks were child > woman > man for dietary. Highest total hazard index (THI) was 6.33 for chromium (Cr), lowest THI was 0.22 for zinc (Zn). THIs were zinc < copper < cadmium < nickel < lead < manganese < chromium. The THIs were higher than 1 for chromium, manganese and lead. Total highest carcinogenic value was 1.73E−03 for Ni and minimum was 1.19 E−05 for lead. Carcinogenic risks for bread (cadmium, nickel and chromium) were high. As a result, it was determined that Cetraria islandica may cause cancer risk if consumed as additive in bread. It was determined that if Cetraria islandica was consumed as tea and cream, there would be no risk of cancer and could not adversely affect human health.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Scopus SJRQ2Assessment of heavy metal accumulations and health risk potentials in tomatoes grown in the discharge area of a municipal wastewater treatment plant
Arslan Topal, E. Işıl; Topal, Murat; Öbek, Erdal
Some heavy metals were detected in organs of the tomatoes grown in the discharge area of effluents of a municipal wastewater treatment plant. Also, the health risk potentials of heavy metals in the tomatoes consumed by human were investigated. The highest concentrations for Cu, Ni, Cr, Mn and Pb were followed the order of root>leaf>stem>fruit. When the bioconcentration factors values calculated for bioconcentration of metals from effluent to stem and root were examined, the highest values were determined for Cu. When translocation factors values are examined, the highest translocation from root to leaf was determined for Cd. The highest translocation from stem to leaf was determined for Pb. The estimated total exposure dose for male, female and children was listed as Zn>Mn>Cu>Cr>Ni>Pb>Cd. In terms of dietary, we can list the non-carcinogenic risks of heavy metals as children> female> male. The highest carcinogenic risk was calculated for Cr via dietary intake.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ3Analysis of heavy metal contamination in surface sediments of Iskenderun Bay, Turkey
Kutlu, Banu; Özcan, Tahir; Özcan, Gülnaz
The ecological risk resulting from the accumulation of some heavy metals in the sediments of Iskenderun Bay was assessed using the following measures: enrichment and contamination factor, pollution load index (PLI), and potential ecological risk index (RI). The concentrations of the studied heavy metals were in the following order: Fe > Ni > Mn > Cr > Zn > Cu > As > Pb > Cd > Hg. Ni and As had the highest EF values. This situation is most likely due to the presence of iron, pesticide, and fertilizer plants in the region. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Ni, As, Mn, and Cr may have harmful effects on faunal communities in sediments. According to the RI, Site 4 was more contaminated and toxic than the other seven study sites, with "moderate"ecological risk. Pearson's correlation coefficient was determined by multivariate methods - cluster and principal component analysis. As can be inferred from the RI values, the potential toxic effect of As and Ni in the sediments is moderate.

- MakaleYalnız künye2018Scopus SJRQ2Assessment of pollution potential of the Hasangazi chromite pit (Tunceli, Turkey): implications for the natural environment
Çimen, Okay; Öztüfekçi Önal, Ayten; Akyol, Eylem Akarsu
The Hasangazi chromite pit is an abandoned mine located to the east of the town of Pülümür (Tunceli, Turkey). The surface water that circulates in the pit flows into the Pülümür stream via the Turnadere creek. The quality of the surface water and soil from the region is important regarding the ecosystem in the Tunceli area. The open pit operations in the chromite deposits may be the cause of toxic element enrichments. To understand the effects of such pits, samples from the sediments, soil, waste material, and surface water were collected from the Hasangazi pit and its surrounding area. Samples were mineralogically and geochemically analyzed by XRD, ICP-OES, and ICP-MS methods. Mineralogical analyses showed the presence of chrysotile and plagioclase in the sediment and soil samples. These samples are also enriched in toxic elements, e.g., Cr, Ni, and Co. In particular, the Cr and Ni concentrations exceed the limits of soil pollution regulation of Turkey and the US Environmental Protection Agency. Overall the Cr, Ni, and chrysotile contents demonstrate the impact of the abandoned pit and the ultramafic rocks. Moreover, the surface water samples in the dry season have Zn concentrations above the toxic levels that may have been derived from the volcanic rocks. Environmental remediation precautions should immediately be taken around this inactive pit.

Kanat, Gurdal; Ikizoglu, Bahar; Erguven, Gokhan Onder; Akgun, Berivan
In our study we studied pollution and heavy metal fractions in the Golden Horn (Istanbul, Turkey). This area has been exposed to domestic and industrial pollution for many years. Concentrations of Zn, Cr, Cu, Pb, Cd, and Ni heavy metals were determined in the study that was conducted to monitor the current state of pollution and changing conditions in the polluted estuary. Mean heavy metal concentrations were found as: Zn 70-260, Cr 26-110, Cu 70-135, Pb 8-50, Cd 0.1-2, and Ni 10-38 mg/kg. Results of the analysis showed that metal concentrations were usually low, indicating that the sediment was not too polluted in the present case. The range of ratios, different fractions of metal concentrations, and total metal concentrations in the samples were critical for potential toxicity and mobility of metals. Results of the analysis showed that heavy metal fractions in the sediment were usually found in residual forms. The values obtained in the study were also compared with the literature. It was found that surface sediments in the Golden Horn were less polluted than other areas. Establishment of sewer collectors and wastewater treatment plants has improved the heavy metal levels in the sediment.

- MakaleYalnız künye2018Scopus SJRQ2Microbial Sorption of Uranium Using Amycolatopsis sp. K47 Isolated from Uranium Deposits
Celik, Fatih; Camas, Mustafa; Kyeremeh, Kwaku; Sazak Camas, Anil
The increasing contamination of soils, sediments, and water with heavy metals through natural and industrial processes is a worldwide problem. Mining processes produce tons of material contaminated with radionuclides such as U and different heavy metals such as Cd, Ni, and Pb. U(VI) adsorbs strongly on bacteria, exhibiting pH-dependent adsorption behavior that is caused by a range of uranyl surface complexes on bacteria cell walls. The Amycolatopsis sp. K47 was isolated from Manisa Koprubasi Kasar open-cast uranium mine and identified for the first time. Using the batch adsorption method, the biosorption potential of this microbe was investigated by studying the effects of changes in pH (1–10), biomass dose (0.1–5 g/l), initial uranium metal concentration (5–200 mg/l), contact time (5–180 min), and temperature (20–60 °C). Interpretation of FTIR data obtained for both the uranium loaded and unloaded Amycolatopsis sp. K47 biomass showed the presence of carboxylic acid, hydroxyl, and amide functional groups that could interact with uranium ions. Scanning electron microscopy images demonstrated that uranium was intensely adsorbed on the microbial biomass surface. The sorption isotherms were investigated by analysis of the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin–Radushkevich (D–R) models. The Langmuir isotherm model was found to show the best fit for the experimental data obtained. Furthermore, thermodynamic parameters, such as ΔH°, ΔS°, and ΔG°, were calculated using adsorption equilibrium constant obtained from the Langmuir isotherm. The optimal experimental conditions were determined to be pH = 4, C0 = 40 ppm, t = 150 min, temp. = 40 °C, and abs. dose = 1 g/l, and the corresponding U(VI) removal efficiency was about 97 ± 2%.

Kutlu, Banu; Mutlu, Ekrem
Present study consists the growth of cell and bioaccumulation capacity of Cadmium (Cd), Zinc (Zn), Lead (Pb), Copper (Cu) by Dunaliella sp. isolated from Homa Lagoon, Eastern Aegean, Turkey. Sterile medium f/2 was used for the cultivation. Growth rate, mean growth rate, relative growth rate and generation time of Dunaliella sp. were calculated for determining the growth of cell. In addition, optimum pH values were determined for each heavy metal. Our results pointed out that the optimum time for harvesting Dunaliella sp. was in 8 days. Uptake of heavy metals of Dunaliella sp. showed high tendency for zinc accumulation followed by copper, lead, and the lowest tendency was for cadmium. Highest bioaccumulation of Zn was determined to be 151.64 µg/L at 2.45 of pH under in situ conditions. pH had noticeably affected the bioaccumulation capacity of Dunaliella sp.

Aksu, Onder; Yabanli, Murat; Can, Erkan; Kutluyer, Filiz; Kehayias, George; Can, Safak Seyhaneyildiz; Kocabas, Mehmet; Demir, Veysel
The present study aimed to determine and compare the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in two freshwater species of mussels Unio elongatulus eucirrus (Bourguignat, 1860) and Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas, 1771) in Keban Dam Lake, Turkey. The amount of Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd), Copper (Cu), Lead (Pb) and Uranium (U) were detected. Heavy metals concentrations (ppm) of these heavy metals in U. e. eucirrus and D. polymorpha were 1.071 and 1.376 for As, 0.174 and 0.335 for Cd, 0.004 and 3.817 for Cu, 0 and 0.267 for Pb, 0.004 and 0.267 for U, respectively. Arsenic concentrations in the tissues of both species have exceeded the maximum permission limits in all sampling sites. The concentrations of Cu and U were considerably greater in D. polymorpha specimens than in U. e. eucirrus (p<0.05). The results obtained from the present study showed that both species accumulated heavy metals generally in the following sequences: Cu > As > Cd > Pb >U. The present results indicated that D. polymorpha may be a better bioindicator of environmental pollution than U. e. eucirrus, since it showed a higher accumulation capacity.
