In this study, 6061-aluminum metal matrix composites doped with varying concentrations of ytterbium(III) oxide were synthesized using high-energy mechanical alloying to evaluate their structural, physical, and radiation shielding properties. X-ray diffraction confirmed the retention of the aluminum crystal structure with no secondary phase formation, while scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed homogenous dispersion of Yb2O3 particles within the matrix. With increasing Yb2O3 content, particle densification and structural integrity were significantly enhanced. Gamma-ray and neutron shielding performance was assessed through theoretical modeling and Monte Carlo simulations. At low photon energy, the 20 wt% Yb2O3 composites showed a remarkable increase in linear attenuation coefficients compared to the undoped 6061-aluminum matrix. Neutron removal efficiency also increased by 32% at the highest Yb2O3 content. It can be concluded that Yb2O3 incorporation significantly improves both the photon and neutron shielding performance of the 6061-aluminum metal matrix.

Kanca, Muhammed Sait; Yılmaz, Demet; Tasgın, Yahya; Kök, Mediha; Güler, Seval Hale
In this study, the effects of rare earth oxides (Gd₂O₃, La₂O₃, Eu₂O₃, Pr₂O₃, Dy₂O₃, and Y₂O₃) and high-entropy oxide (GdLaEuPrDyY)₂O₃ additives on the structural, mechanical, and radiation shielding properties of copper matrix composites were investigated. XRD and SEM-EDS analyses showed that the high-entropy oxide successfully formed in a single-phase bixbyite structure after mechanical alloying and was homogeneously distributed within the copper matrix. The rare earth oxide additive significantly reduced the crystal grain size of the Cu matrix and improved its mechanical properties. Specifically, the microhardness value reached 68.3 Hv in the composite with 20% high-entropy oxide additive, representing an increase of approximately 111% compared to pure copper (32.3 Hv). Gamma shielding results showed that the rare earth oxide additive significantly increased the photon attenuation capacity. Specifically, at 242 keV energy, the Dy₂O₃ additive increased the MAC value from 0.141 cm²/g to 0.246 cm²/g, providing a 74.5% improvement. The most important result is that the composite with 20% high-entropy oxide additive showed the highest shielding performance, achieving a MAC value of 0.278 cm²/g, which is significantly superior to pure copper. Furthermore, this composite exhibited the lowest HVL and MFP values, demonstrating the highest photon shielding efficiency. Neutron shielding analyses revealed that Gd₂O₃ and high-entropy oxide additives, in particular, increased thermal neutron attenuation performance to approximately 100%. These results demonstrate that high-entropy oxide additives provide a stronger impact compared to single oxide additives, offering superior performance in both gamma and neutron shielding. Consequently, copper composites doped with (GdLaEuPrDyY)₂O₃ stand out as promising alternative shielding materials for nuclear facilities, radiation protection systems, and advanced engineering applications due to their high shielding efficiency, improved mechanical properties, and non-toxic composition.

In this study, mechanically alloyed Fe70Nb10V10B10, Co70Nb10V10B10, Ni70Nb10V10B10, and (FeCoNi) 70Nb10V10B10 high-entropy alloys were successfully synthesized, and their structural, magnetic, and radiation shielding properties were systematically investigated. Structural analysis revealed that Fe favored bcc phase formation, while Co and Ni stabilized fcc structures; the equiatomic alloy resulted in a single-phase fcc solid solution with the smallest crystallite size (2.1 nm). All samples exhibited soft ferromagnetic behavior, with the Fe-based alloy achieving the highest saturation magnetization (120 emu/g), and the (FeCoNi) 70Nb10V10B10 alloy displaying the lowest coercivity. Among all compositions, Co70Nb10V10B10 demonstrated the best gamma and neutron shielding performance, showing the highest linear attenuation coefficient and fast neutron removal cross-section. The equiatomic alloy also exhibited well-balanced and stable shielding behavior. These findings position Co70Nb10V10B10 as a promising candidate for multifunctional applications requiring both efficient radiation protection and favorable magnetic properties.

A spinel-structured high-entropy alloy-oxide (HEAO) with the nominal composition (Fe30Cr30Mn20Ni10V10)3O4 was synthesized via mechanical alloying followed by thermo-mechanical oxidation X-ray diffraction indicated the formation of a predominantly spinel-type cubic oxide phase after oxidation, with the observed reflections being consistent with the Fd-3m spinel structure, while SEM-EDS mapping showed a homogeneous cation distribution at the examined scale. XPS analysis revealed mixed valence states of Fe2+/Fe3+, Cr3+/Cr4+, Mn3+/Mn4+, Ni2+/Ni3+, and V4+/V5+. Thermodynamic parameters supported phase stability, with ΔSmix = 12.51 J K−1·mol−1 and Ω = 2.68. Gamma-ray attenuation properties were evaluated over 0.015-15 MeV. The linear attenuation coefficient decreased from 193.685 cm−1 at 0.015 MeV to 0.309 cm−1 at 1 MeV and stabilized near 0.137 cm−1 at 15 MeV. Correspondingly, the half value layer increased from 0.004 cm to 5.068 cm across the same energy range. The effective atomic number decreased from 24.58 at 0.015 MeV to approximately 15.37 at 1 MeV, followed by a moderate increase to 17.71 at 15 MeV. Comparative analysis with commercial stainless steel, titanium alloys, nickel-based superalloys, ferro-boron systems, and lightweight entropy alloys demonstrated that the synthesized HEAO exhibits intermediate yet stable attenuation performance, positioning it between low-density Al-based systems and high-density Ni-rich alloys. It can be concluded that the alloy-to-oxide strategy enables the production of a structurally stable spinel HEAO with consistent and competitive gamma-ray attenuation behaviour across a broad photon energy spectrum.

In this study, Al6061–Eu2O3 composites were fabricated via mechanical alloying and systematically characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy to evaluate structural and compositional features. The incorporation of Eu2O3 in varying weight percentages (1–20 wt%) was confirmed by XRD, revealing phase retention and crystallite refinement, while SEM–EDS analyses indicated uniform elemental distribution at low doping and localized clustering at higher reinforcement levels. Radiation shielding properties were comprehensively assessed through mass and linear attenuation coefficients, half value layer, effective atomic number, fast neutron removal cross section, buildup factors, and photon transmission factors. The results demonstrated a strong correlation between increasing Eu2O3 content and improved shielding performance. The E20 composite exhibited a mass attenuation coefficient of 22.33 cm2/g at 0.015 MeV, over threefold higher than the base alloy, and fast neutron removal cross section improved by 22.5 % compared to Al6061 alone. Additionally, EBF and EABF values decreased significantly, confirming reduced secondary photon build-up. These findings validate the effectiveness of Eu2O3 as a reinforcement phase for tailoring Al6061 for multifunctional applications, particularly in nuclear, aerospace, and radiological environments requiring lightweight materials with superior gamma and neutron attenuation.

We report a comprehensive investigation on customization process of Oxide Dispersion-Strengthened alloys through Sm2O3, Pr2O3, and Er2O3 incorporation into 316L stainless steel matrix in terms of a desired enhancement in structural, physical, and nuclear radiation shielding properties. Oxide powders are incorporated into 316L stainless steel powder all with the same purity of 99.5%. These were Erbium oxide (Er2O3), Praseodymium oxide (Pr2O3), and Samarium oxide (Sm2O3). First, X-Ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscope/Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses are conducted in order to investigate their physical and structural properties. Next, two different experimental setups are employed using a133Ba and 241Am/Be sources for the measurements of gamma-ray and neutron transmission properties of Oxide Dispersion-Strengthened alloys. The maximum density increment is achieved through Er2O3 compared to other reinforced oxides. The detector counting value reached its minimum level when a 5% Er2O3 oxide dispersion was introduced into the 316L SS matrix. Similarly, the most significant degree of photon absorption, the highest values of mass attenuation coefficient, lowest half value layer, and most effective atomic number, were all attained by the same sample. Based on the findings derived from the investigation, it can be concluded that incorporating Er2O3 oxide into 316L steel can be considered as a viable option in terms of enhancing the critical properties of Oxide Dispersion-Strengthened alloys for extreme conditions such as nuclear reactors and other similar fields, where the behavioral attributes of the utilized materials are at utmost importance.

- MakaleYalnız künye2024Scopus SJRQ2Effects of Cr and W in TiMoNb Refractory High Entropy Alloys
Simsek, Tuncay; Kurtulus, Altug; Avar, Baris; Güler, Seval Hale; Dag, İlker Emin; Chattopadhyay, Arun K.
This study focuses on synthesizing and characterizing mechanically alloyed refractory high entropy alloys (RHEA) containing TiMoNb, Cr, W, and Cr + W. Analytical techniques including XRD, SEM, EDX, DTA, and TGA were employed to explore the influence of Cr and W on the alloys' structure, morphology, and thermal stability towards oxidation. XRD analysis confirmed the formation of a single-phase bcc solid solution in TiMoNbCr, TiMoNbW, and TiMoNbCrW alloys. Crystallite size decreased as milling progressed, yielding average sizes of approximately 7.2 nm, 7.4 nm, and 9.7 nm, with lattice strains of 1.143%, 1.148%, and 1.15%, respectively. Both experimental and calculated values of lattice parameters converged to around 3.1685 ± 0.002 and 3.1791 ± 0.010 Å for all three alloys. The synergy of Cr and W in TiMoNb was observed for the first time, impacting dislocation density, hardness, and oxidation stability. TiMoNbCrW exhibited reduced dislocation density and the highest hardness (502 HV). TGA indicated enhanced oxidation resistance up to 400 °C for TiMoNbCrW compared to the most vulnerable TiMoNbCr alloy.

- MakaleYalnız künye2024Scopus SJRQ2Production of CoCrFeNi(Al/Ti) High-Entropy Alloys by Mechanical Alloying: Optimization of Milling Time and Comparison of Corrosion Susceptibilities
Say, Yakup; Dikici, Burak; Kaseem, Mosab; Özkul, İskender; Güler, Ömer
CoCrFeNi alloy is the most well-known four-component equiatomic alloy. In addition, it has a low-cost composition among HEAs. Four-component alloys are considered semi-HEAs. Therefore, a five-component HEA design was made by adding another metal to the main composition of CoCrFeNi. As the fifth metal, two metals such as Al and Ti, which are relatively low in cost and have the potential to improve properties, were chosen. For this purpose, in this study, the effect of Al and Ti on CoCrFeNi main alloy was investigated by producing three different samples as CoCrFeNi, CoCrFeNiAl, and CoCrFeNiTi. The alloys with three different compositions (used three different samples) were successfully produced by the mechanical alloying method. Although Al and Ti have the possibility of intermetallic with other metals in the alloy, such a formation was not observed during mechanical alloying, and it was observed that all metals were homogeneously distributed in the alloy. The microhardness results indicated that CoCrFeNiAl and CoCrFeNiTi samples had similar hardness values. While the hardness of the CoCrFeNi sample was 136 HV, the hardness of the CoCrFeNiAl sample was 262 HV. However, the hardness of the CoCrFeNiTi sample decreased significantly. The hardness of the CoCrFeNiTi sample was measured as 269 HV. It was observed that the addition of Ti and Al to the base alloy was increased a significant change in hardness. It has been observed that Ti supplementation has a more positive effect on improving corrosion properties. It is seen that the corrosion potentials shift toward more negative potentials with the addition of Al and Ti to the CoCrFeNi (−194 mV) alloy (−306 and −224 mV for CoCrFeNiAl and CoCrFeNiTi, respectively). When the surface morphologies of the alloys are compared after corrosion; the damage to the alloy surfaces increases due to the negative Ecorr value in CoCrFeNiAl and CoCrFeNiTi alloys compared to the master alloy. However, the high corrosion current density (12.69 µA/cm2) in the CoCrFeNiTi sample caused much more damage to this alloy. Graphical Abstract: (Figure presented.)
