Gul, Muhammet; Celik, Erkan; Aydin, Nezir; Gumus, Alev Taskin; Guneri, Ali Fuat

Multi criteria decision making (MCDM) is one of the research areas of operations research and management science which has widely studied by researchers and practitioners. It finds a compromise solution for evaluating and ranking alternatives from the best to the worst under conflicting criteria with respect to decision maker(s) preferences. In a compromise approach, the VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR; that means multi-criteria optimization and compromise solution) continues to be applied satisfactorily across different application areas. This paper conducts a state-of-the-art literature review to categorize, analyze and interpret the current research on VIKOR applications. It also discusses the extensions of VIKOR applied in fuzzy environments. A total of 343 papers are classified into 13 different application areas and a number of sub-application areas. Furthermore, all papers are also categorized with respect to publication year, published journal, country of origin, application type (real case study vs empirical study), and version of fuzzy sets used. This comprehensive literature review provides an insight for researchers and practitioners on VIKOR applications in terms of showing current state and potential areas for future attempts to be focused in the future. Predicting Links in Weighted Disease Networks

Gül, Serpil; Kaya, Mehmet; Kaya, Buket

This paper proposes a link prediction method to estimate what sort of disease risks may have been carried by the patients via surveying their and similar patients' medical histories. It is possible to make future oriented predictions with link prediction by deriving new data within a network structure. It is attempted to estimate the future structure of the network and the relations which will be created or abandoned by the individuals on the basis of the nodes within the network structure and the relations between these nodes. For this purpose, an undirected weighted disease network is first created by using the data of patients which were subjected to Hemogram test at F. rat University Hospital during 2013. In the disease network, each node represents a disease and the links represent a relationship between diseases. By the developed method, then disease risk prediction is made through a proactive approach by determining what sorts of disease risks were carried by the patients applying with certain complaints. Experimental results demonstrate the applicability of the link prediction in these networks.

Yildirim, Ozal; Eristi, Belkis; Eristi, Huseyin; Ünal, Sencer; Erol, Yavuz; Demir, Yakup

In this study, an FPGA based online monitoring system was developed for detection of power quality disturbances. The developed system has the capability to instantly detect commonly seen PQ disturbances such as voltage sag, voltage swell and interruption occurring on real-time three-phase voltage signals obtained from the electric power system. The data of the detected disturbance events are transferred to the visual software prepared in the computer environment by means of the UDP/IP communication module embedded in the FPGA. This PQ disturbance detection system was tested upon installation at three different measuring points across the campus of Tunceli University. It was seen from the test results examined that the detection system successfully identified the PQ disturbance events.

COMPACT COMPLEX SURFACES OF LOCALLY CONFORMALLY FLAT TYPE

    Kalafat, Mustafa; Koca, Caner

We show that if a compact complex surface admits a locally conformally flat metric, then it cannot contain a smooth rational curve of odd self-intersection. In particular, the surface has to be minimal. Moreover, we give a list of possibilities of such surfaces.

A Real-Time Power Quality Disturbance Detection System Based On The Wavelet Transform

Eristi, Belkis; Yildirim, Ozal; Eristi, Huseyin; Demir, Yakup

Disturbances occurring on voltage signals following switching events or faults on power systems are defined as power quality problem. Power quality problems result in significant financial losses in the power systems in addition to faulty operation or breakdown of sensitive loads connected to the power system. Therefore, power quality problems should be swiftly detected and eliminated. This paper proposes a real-time embedded detection system for the purpose of identification of power quality disturbances. The detection system developed has been created using the wavelet transform in the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) media. The general structure of FPGA-based detection system comprises two fundamental parts: hardware and software. Hardware structure comprises signal input card, FPGA and computer components. The software stage includes FPGA and graphical interface software. An experimental setup of the power system has been created in laboratory environment in order to test the FPGA-based detection system, determine accuracy rates and assess its success. Various power quality disturbances have been created over this model in wide parameter intervals. When the results obtained for the real-time power quality disturbance detection system developed under this study are examined, it has been seen that hardware and software designs are quite effective, fast and of high achievement performance.

ANTIMONY INDUCED GLUTATHIONE EFFLUX FROM HUMAN ERYTHROCTES

Sahilli, Yeliz Cakir; Akgun, Mehmet Hanifi; Yildiz, Deniz

Antimony is a trace element which has wide variety of industrial application. Antimony has recently been considered as an environmental pollutant. Among the inorganic forms, SbIII is the more toxic form. SbIII is ten times more toxic compared to the SbV. Consuming plants that are grown in antimony contaminated soil is one of the way by which humans are exposed to antimony. AsIII and SbIII forms strong bonds with free-SH groups. When SbIII or SbV interacts with proteins that contain free-SH groups, protein inactivation usually results in. Antimony may also result in free radical generation and induction of oxidative stress. Even though antimony has some applications in health as a drug, its biological effects have not been investigated in detail. In the present study we investigated the effects of SbIII on glutathione efflux in human erythrocytes. The effects of N-acetyl-L-cysteine on antimony induced glutathione oxidation and glutathione efflux were also investigated. Extracellular glutathione concentration significantly increased and reached to 0.033 +/- 0.0034 micromole/ml erythrocyte with 1 mM of potassium antimony tartrate in four hours. The control value of extracellular glutathione was 0.020 +/- 0.0035 micromole/ml erythrocyte. Our results show that SbIII treatment of erythrocyte results in glutathione efflux.

Effects of hydroxyapatite/Zr and bioglass/Zr coatings on morphology and corrosion behaviour of Rex-734 alloy

    Say, Y.; Aksakal, B.

To improve corrosion resistance of metallic implant surfaces, Rex-734 alloy was coated with two different bio-ceramics; single-Hydroxyapatite (HA), double-HA/Zirconia(Zr) and double-Bioglass (BG)/Zr by using sol-gel method. Porous surface morphologies at low crack density were obtained after coating and sintering processes. Corrosion characteristics of coatings were determined by Open circuit potential and Potentiodynamic polarization measurements during corrosion tests. Hardness and adhesion strength of coating layers were measured and their surface morphologies before and after corrosion were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), XRD and EDX. Through the SEM analysis, it was observed that corrosion caused degradation and sphere-like formations appeared with dimples on the coated surfaces. The coated substrates that exhibit high crack density, the corrosion was more effective by disturbing and transmitting through the coating layer, produced CrO3 and Cr3O8 oxide formation. It was found that the addition of Zr provided an increase in adhesion strength and corrosion resistance of the coatings. However, BG/Zr coatings had lower adhesion strength than the HA/Zr coatings, but showed higher corrosion resistance.

Storm water retention and actual evapotranspiration performances of experimental green roofs in French oceanic climate

    Yilmaz, D.; Sabre, M.; Lassabatère, L.; Dal, M.; Rodriguez, F.

Green roofs are promising urban management tools from the standpoint of both rainwater management and microclimatology. They are considered as a storm water mitigation technique and may also favour evapotranspiration fluxes, which can be beneficial for urban comfort during summer periods. In France, however, water retention performance of green roofs remains unknown, and published values are often unsuitable. Six experimental roofs, including two thicknesses of growing media, three types of vegetation cover and bare surfaces, were monitored for two years in Nantes and compared to an experimental gravel flat roof. The thickest media combined with the most densely vegetated cover yields the best results in terms of storm water mitigation and actual evapotranspiration. In winter, the rainwater retention performance is clearly dependent on the type of experimental roof vegetation. This kind of experimental set-up is well suited to assisting urban planners design tools for storm water mitigation in buildings.

SOME characteristic properties of analytical method of magnetic control of ferroimpurities in various primary and technological media

Sandulyak, Anna A.; Sandulyak, Alexander V.; Bulut, Hasan; Baskonus, Haci Mehmet; Polismakova, Maria N.; Sandulyak, Darya A.; Mastorakis, N; Mladenov, V; Bulucea, A

The paper demonstrates that when defining the content of ferroimpurities in the analyzed media by magnetic control based on measuring the ferroimpurities masses m, which are extracted from the media sample step-by-step, it is crucial to define a functional view of the obtained dependence m on the operation order number n. It allows receiving additional forecast data m by extrapolating this dependence. With corresponding calculations being done, it enables determining the sought total mass of ferroimpurities (including their residual mass). We consider alternate solutions of practical tasks which yield magnetic control results in case of linear and piecewise-linear views (in semi-logarithmic coordinates) of the control mass-operational characteristics.

Korkmaz, Sengul Asian; Karadag, Ahmet; Aydin, Ali; Yerli, Yusuf; Soylu, Mustafa Serkan

Five new complexes of composition [Ni(N-bishydeten)Pt(CN)(4)] (1), [Ni(N-bishydeten)(2)][Pt(CN)(4)] (2), [Cu (N-bishydeten)Pt(CN)(4)] (3), [Cu(N-bishydeten)(2)][Pt(CN)(4)] (4) and [Cd(N-bishydeten)(2)][Pt(CN)(4)] (5) (N-bishydeten = N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-ethylenediamine) have been obtained and characterized by IR and EPR spectroscopies, elemental and thermal analysis and magnetic measurements. X-ray studies of 2 and 3 exhibited different structures and two different coordination modes of N-bishydeten ancillary ligand with a ratio of M:L. While N-bishydeten acts as a tetradentate with N', N', O and O' atoms in a molar ratio of 1:1 formed 2,2-CT-type zigzag chain for 3, it behaves tridentate ligand by ending up with six coordinated Ni-II center in a complex salt by using 1:2 M ratio for 2. None of the 1 and 3 complexes produced in this study showed sufficient anticancer activity but all did exhibit apoptotic properties and one of them also performed low cytotoxic activity against cell tested. The effects of sebum configuration on Demodex spp. density

Demirdag, Hatice Gamze; Özcan, Hamdi; Gürsoy, Sule; Beker Akbulut, Gulcin

Background/aim: Demodex spp. are ectoparasites living in the pilosebaceous units, which feed on the host's sebum and cellular proteins. The protective barrier of the skin consists of sebum secretion, moisture, and the acid mantle. In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of skin sebum, moisture, pH levels, and sebum configuration on Demodex spp. density Materials and methods: Forty-five patients who had demodicosis were enrolled in the study group, while the control group consisted of 40 subjects without demodicosis. Body fat percentage, serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels, skin sebum, moisture, and pH levels were measured. Demodex spp. density was determined with a standardized skin surface biopsy. Sebum samples were taken from the forehead and a high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) method was performed on these samples. Subsequently, densitometric analyses were applied to the HPTLC plates. Results: Demodex spp. were found on the cheeks and lived in an alkali environment. Skin sebum and moisture levels were low in all groups. The skin pH levels and cholesterol ester in the sebum configuration were determined to be significantly higher in the group with demodicosis. Conclusion: We suggest that Demodex spp. may use cholesterol ester in the sebum as nutriment. In other words, cholesterol ester may be a suitable growth medium for the proliferation of Demodex spp.

Steady, dynamic, creep/recovery, and textural properties of yoghurt/molasses blends: Temperature sweep tests and applicability of Cox-Merz rule

Eroglu, Ali; Bayrambas, Kadir; Eroglu, Zeynep; Toker, Omer S.; Yilmaz, Mustafa T.; Karaman, Safa; Dogan, Mahmut

In this study, physicochemical, rheological (steady, dynamic, and creep/recovery), and textural properties of yoghurt/molasses blends (0, 5, 10, and 15% molasses) were investigated. The blends showed shear thinning behavior, as described by Ostwald de Waele model (R-2 >= 0.955). Consistency coefficient value (K) of the blends decreased with increasing molasses concentration in the sample. Storage modulus (G') of blends was higher than loss modulus (G ''), exhibiting weak gel-like behavior. Molasses addition decreased G' and G '' values. Temperature sweep tests indicated that blends followed Arrhenius relationship. A modified Cox-Merz rule was applicable using shift factors. Compliance values (J(t)) increased as molasses concentration increased, revealing that deformation stability and internal viscosity (eta(1)) decreased with concentration. Creep behavior was characterized using Burger model. Obtained J data as a function of time could be satisfactorily fitted to Burger model (R-2 >= 0.994). The final percentage recovery of blends remarkably decreased with the increase of molasses concentration. Firmness, consistency, cohesiveness, and viscosity index values decreased with molasses addition. According to the results of the current study, molasses amount to be added to the yoghurt should be determined regarding rheological properties since resistance of the sample to deformation decreased with increase in molasses concentration.

Cultural perceptions and clinical experiences of nursing students in Eastern Turkey

    Karatay, G.; Bowers, B.; Karadag, E. B.; Demir, M. C.

Aim: This study explored Turkish nursing students' perceptions of providing care to patients culturally different from themselves. Background: Increasing migration will increase the need for nurses to provide care across cultural groups. Methods: Twenty one students in the second year of a 4-year nursing programme participated in 3 focus groups. Data were analysed using directed content analysis. Research questions were based on Campinha-Bacote's model. Results: Three themes were identified: perceived cultural barriers, perceived cultural facilitators and identifying culturally sensitive actions. Generally, students were able to define culture but were unable to say how culture would affect nursing practice. Discussion: Students were unprepared to practice in a multicultural setting. Cultural awareness is insufficient for determining how to respond to cultural differences. Limitations: The study is limited by its restriction to a single school of nursing and a single curriculum. Conclusions: The multiple, ongoing political, religious and ethnic conflicts will require nurses to provide care to patients from other cultural groups, in some instances to people identified as adversaries to the group the nurse may represent. Understanding cultural differences is insufficient to do this effectively. Implications for nursing education: Learning culturally competent care requires opportunities to provide, be guided through and reflect on care to individuals from different cultural groups. Implications for organizational and public policies: Standards for culturally competent care should be adopted by all care delivery settings. Public and organizational policies openly declaring healthcare settings as cultural safe zones, and explicit organizational commitment to culturally safe care, would set clear expectations for providers and help ensure a positive patient experience.

Immunological biomarkers reflect the effects of exposure to environmental contaminants. In this study, the suitability and sensitivity of cytokine responses, interleukin 1 beta (IL-1 beta), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in gill tissues of Capoeta umbla (Heckel, 1843), collected from different regions, as early warning indices of environmental pollution and ecosystem health was evaluated. Fish and water samples were taken from ten stations in March and September 2011 and 2012. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha, IL-1 beta and IL-6 levels were determined in samples of the gill tissues by using an ELISA kit. Significant variations of TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta and IL-6 levels observed between stations and seasons. The results of this study show that seasonal variations of cytokine responses in gills of Capoeta umbla are sensitive to the contaminants present in Uzuncayir Dam Lake (Tunceli, Turkey) water and are valuable biomarkers for environmental pollution and ecosystem health.
