Fine–kinney-based occupational risk assessment using interval type-2 fuzzy qualiflex

Gul, Muhammet; Mete, Suleyman; Serin, Faruk; Celik, Erkan

In this chapter, we improved Fine–Kinney occupational risk assessment approach with interval type-2 fuzzy QUALIFLEX (IT2FQUALIFLEX). QUALIFLEX is an outranking multi-attribute decision-making method proposed by an extension of the Paelinck’s (Pap Reg Sci Assoc 36:59–74,[1]), generalized Jacquet-Lagreze’s permutation method. Similar to other outranking solution-based approaches, it considers the solution which is a comparison of hazards. In this chapter, we adapted the interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2FSs) into QUALIFLEX as it reflects the uncertainty well in decision-making. IT2FQUALIFLEX algorithm under the Fine–Kinney concept provides a useful and solid approach to the occupational health and safety risk assessment. In addition to proposing this new approach, a case study is performed in the chrome plating unit. A validation is also performed in this study. Finally, the proposed approach is implemented in Python.

Fine–kinney-based occupational risk assessment using interval type-2 fuzzy topsis

Gul, Muhammet; Mete, Suleyman; Serin, Faruk; Celik, Erkan

This chapter proposed an improved Fine–Kinney occupational risk assessment approach using a well-known MCDM method “TOPSIS” under interval type-2 fuzzy set concept. It is defined as a technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution by Hwang and Yoon [1]. It is based on separation from ideal and anti-ideal solution concept. Since the initial crisp data-based version is insufficient by time in reflecting the uncertainty in decision-maker’s opinions, fuzzy sets are integrated to the TOPSIS algorithm to provide a solid and comprehensive method. Interval type-2 fuzzy set is an improved version of the type-1 fuzzy set. It is also a special version of a general type-2 fuzzy set. Since general type-2 fuzzy systems contain complex computational operations, they cannot be easily applied to real-world problems such as occupational risk assessment. Interval type-2 fuzzy sets are the most frequently used type-2 fuzzy sets due to their ability in handling more uncertainty and producing more accurate and solid results. The Fine–Kinney concept is merged with the interval type-2 fuzzy set concept and TOPSIS for the first time through the literature. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach, a case study is carried out in a chrome plating unit of a gun factory. Some beneficial validation and sensitivity analysis are also performed. Finally, as a creative contribution of our book, the implementation of the proposed approach in Python is performed.

NARX neural networks model for forecasting daily patient arrivals in the Emergency Department

Yucesan, Melih; Mete, Suleyman; Serin, Faruk; Celik, Erkan; Gul, Muhammet

Regarding measuring of service quality at the emergency departments (ED), essential parameters are length of stay (LOS) and waiting times. Patient arrivals, which is related to LOS and waiting times, is hard to forecast and is affected by many parameters. Therefore, authors employed a Nonlinear Autoregressive Exogenous (NARX) model for forecasting of ED arrivals. NARX models are used extensively in many applications that show non-linear and dynamic behavior, but as far as authors know, the NARX method has not yet been used in the forecast of ED arrivals before. In this study, calendar and climatic variables are defined as input parameters. Patient Arrivals is defined as output parameter. A commercial software, MATLAB, was used to train and test the data set. To find the best network architecture Levenberg- Marquardt (LM) and Bayesian Regularization (BR) algorithms, different lags, and number of neurons were tested. R-squared and mean square error (MSE) are used to evaluate the accuracy of the tested networks.

A fuzzy decision-making model for the key performance indicators of hospital service quality evaluation

Yucesan, Melih; Mete, Suleyman; Gul, Muhammet; Celik, Erkan

One of the major concerns of the healthcare industry throughout the world is to provide better hospital service quality. Management and delivery of hospital healthcare services are achieved in a competitive environment in Turkey. For this reason, to make better decisions, the services provided by the public and private hospitals should be monitored and evaluated according to the viewpoint of medical stakeholders. This chapter presents a cause-and-effect, decision-making model in evaluating hospital service quality criteria. Since the decision-making process involves the vagueness of human judgments, a combination of fuzzy sets and decisionmaking trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) is used. Results of the study demonstrate that medical equipment level of the hospital, the attitude of nurses and medical staff to patients, pharmacists' advice on medicine preservation, medical staff with professional abilities, outpatient waiting time for medical treatment, and number and quality of the bathrooms available have more impact on the entire hospital service quality. In conclusion, the proposed approach will contribute to better providing of healthcare services at a higher quality level.

Industrial internet of things: How industrial internet of things impacts the supply chain

    Kaya, Sema Kayapinar

Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) refers to the extension of the Internet of Things and It is used for industrial purposes such as manufacturing, supply chain. IIoT can be connected with billions of industrial devices and machines that supported machine learning and big data technology. Because of its potential to authorize faster and better decision making, the IIoT becomes essential for supply chain processes. The IIoT is set to revolutionize the supply chain with both operational efficiencies and revenue opportunities made possible with just this type of transparency. This study attempts to fill this gap by developing a conceptual framework for predicting the advantage of the IIoT and supply chain performance. This chapter synthesizes existing literature reviews and making bibliometric analysis on the IIoT and supply chain. Additionally, It also outlines avenues and opportunities for future research aiming at the contribution of the IIoT to Supply Chain processes.

Homoploid Hybridization and Its Role in Emergence and Diversity of the Genus Origanum L. (Lamiaceae)

Dirmenci, Tuncay; Arabacı, Turan; Özcan, Taner; Yazıcı, Türker; Martin, Esra; Çelenk, Sevcan; Açar, Mikail; Üzel, Devrim

Hybrid specimens can be occurred as same ploidy level (homoploidy) or not (polyploidy) with its parents. Homoploid hybrids are originated without any change in their ploidy level (2n) and polyploid hybrids are produced with the change in ploidy level (3n, 4n etc.). According to recent studies, the frequency of natural hybridization (homoploid and polyploid) has been estimated to 25% of all flowering plants. Recent studies show that the genus Origanum has homoploid hybrids. Hybridization is a common phenomenon among the species of Origanum in overlapping distribution habitats (natural or cultivated areas). Ietswaart suggested that the hybridization process is a significant factor in the speciation of Origanum, and Origanum is probably caused by the hybridization of the old tribe Saturejeae (now tribe Mentheae) genera. Based on the hypothesis of Ietswaart, we can discuss the emergence of the genus Origanum, its intrageneric speciation and its hybrids having the possibility for speciation via hybridization using morphological and cytological evidence. During the field studies, it was seen that many populations of wide-distributed species were overlapping, and some Origanum putative hybrid specimens were also observed in these overlapping areas with morphological differences from their parents. All studied Origanum species and hybrids have 2n = 30 chromosome numbers to define homoploidy. Palynological characters were revealed, and intermediate pollen structure (size, P/E ratio etc.) was seen in the hybrids between their parents. In addition, DNA extractions were done from all the hybrids and their parents. nrITS DNA was sequenced. Hybrid specimens have some heterozygous DNA loci in comparison to their parents. This study presents some evidence about homoploid the hybridization of the genus Origanum put forward by Ietswaart. If habitat, ecological and geographic isolations occur between the hybrids and their parents, these hybrids can be speciation via homoploid hybridization in the future.

Ideology of children animation series in Turkey: The case of Rafadan Tayfa

    Özsel, Kadriye Töre

Cultural commodities take shape in accordance with the socio-political and ideological framework of the system in which they are produced. The aim of this chapter is to reveal that ideological framework for a Turkish animated series for children. The chapter is based upon ideology-critique perspective and selected series is Rafadan Tayfa. It is broadcasted on the kids channel of national broadcasting company TRT, was the most popular domestic animation series in April 2017. Selected chapters of the series are examined in accordance to Giannetti's methodological approach to identify ideological leanings in movies. It is found that the series has mild conservative leanings and presents a partly imagined "traditional neighborhood lifestyle" as an ideal form that is longed for.

Microbial release of exopolymeric substances and their role in removal of pollutants from wastewater

Işıl Arslan Topal, E.; Topal, Murat

Activated sludge samples were seasonally collected from the aeration tanks of the Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant located in Elazığ city (Turkey). Mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS), mixed liquor volatile suspended solids (MLVSS), total solids (TS), suspended solids (SS), volatile solids (VS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and sludge volume index (SVI) of the activated sludge were seasonally monitored in the treatment plant. Exopolymeric substances (EPS) were extracted in the samples collected. The EPS decreased in summer, while the EPS content was the highest in winter. The TB-EPS part of EPS was higher than the LB-EPS part of the EPS in all seasons. The lowest TB-EPS and LB-EPS were determined in summer, while the highest TB-EPS and LB-EPS were determined in winter. The carbohydrate, protein, and humic substance fractions of TB-EPS and LB-EPS followed the order of protein > carbohydrate > humic substance in all seasons. There was a negative correlation between the EPS content and SVI. The relationships between EPS and the removal efficiencies of TS, SS, and VS were quite low, while the relationship between COD removal and EPS was quite high.

TRAIL Mediated Signaling in Breast Cancer: Awakening Guardian Angel to Induce Apoptosis and Overcome Drug Resistance

Yin, Ning; Yi, Liu; Khalid, Sumbul; Ozbey, Ulku; Uteuliev, Yerzhan Sabitaliyevich; Farooqi, Ammad Ahmad; Ahmad, A

Sequencing technologies have allowed us to characterize highly heterogeneous molecular landscape of breast cancer with unprecedented details. Tremendous breakthroughs have been made in unraveling contributory role of signaling pathways in breast cancer development and progression. It is becoming progressively more understandable that deregulation of spatio-temporally controlled pathways underlie development of resistance against different drugs. TRAIL mediated signaling has attracted considerable appreciation because of its characteristically unique ability to target cancer cells while leaving normal cells intact. Discovery of TRAIL was considered as a paradigm shift in molecular oncology because of its conspicuous ability to selectively target cancer cells. There was an exponential growth in the number of high-quality reports which highlighted cancer targeting ability of TRAIL and scientists worked on the development of TRAIL-based therapeutics and death receptor targeting agonistic antibodies to treat cancer. However, later studies challenged simplistic view related to tumor targeting ability of TRAIL. Detailed mechanistic insights revealed that overexpression of anti-apoptotic proteins, inactivation of pro-apoptotic proteins and downregulation of death receptors were instrumental in impairing apoptosis in cancer cells. Therefore researchers started to give attention to identification of methodologies and strategies to overcome the stumbling blocks associated with TRAIL-based therapeutics. Subsequent studies gave us a clear picture of signaling cascade of TRAIL and how deregulation of different proteins abrogated apoptosis. In this chapter we have attempted to provide an overview of the TRAIL induced signaling, list of proteins frequently deregulated and modern approaches to strategically restore apoptosis in TRAIL–resistant breast cancers.

    Nonlinear dynamical model for DNA

Baskonus, Haci Mehmet; Cattani, Carlo; Agarwal, P; Dragomir, SS; Jleli, M; Samet, B

This chapter deals with a nonlinear dynamical system arising in the analysis of the double-chain model in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Bernoulli sub-equation function method and modified exp (-Ω(ξ))-expansion function method to obtain some novel dynamical structures to the nonlinear dynamical system are used. We construct some new exponential, hyperbolic and complex periodic wave solutions to this model. Under some suitable values of parameters, we plot the 2D and 3D graphics of the solutions obtained in this study. All the solutions found in this study satisfy the nonlinear dynamical system. Moreover, these solutions can be used to explain some new significant physical meanings of the nonlinear dynamical model for DNA.

Use of FAHP for occupational safety risk assessment: An application in the aluminum extrusion industry

    Gul, Muhammet; Guneri, Ali Fuat

Risk is dened as relating to a technical or sociotechnical system in which events may take place in the future that have unwanted consequences to assets that we want to protect (Rausand, 2011). The rst stage in controlling risks is to perform a risk assessment in order to see what is required to be done (Health and Safety Executive, 1998). This includes identifying hazards, deciding the harmfulness of them, evaluating all possible risks, reducing them, and recording the results, respectively (Health and Safety Executive, 1998; Main, 2004; Gul and Guneri, 2016). The plentifulness in risk assessment.

Solutions of Nonlinear Fractional Differential Equations Systems through an Implementation of the Variational Iteration Method

Baskonus, Haci Mehmet; Belgacem, Fethi Bin Muhammad; Bulut, Hasan; Cattani, C; Srivastava, HM; Yang, XJ

In this book chapter, the Variational Iteration Method is used to solve systems of nonlinear fractional differential equations. Implementations with two separate nonlinear fractional differential equations systems illustrate a high degree of effectiveness. In the absence of explicit analytical methods, the Variational Iterative Method turns out to be a powerful tool to understand the behavior of nonlinear fractional differential equations and systems. Numerical solutions plots are obtained for each system via the Mathematica Symbolic Algebra Software 9.
