Total phenolic contents and free-radical scavenging activities of grape (Vitis vinifera L.) and grape products

Keser, Serhat; Celik, Sait; Turkoglu, Semra

Grape is one of the world's largest fruit crops, with an approximate annual production of 58 million metric tons, and it is well known that the grape skins, seeds and stems, waste products generated during wine and grape juice processing, are rich sources of polyphenols. It contains flavonoids, phenolic acids and stilbenes. In this study, we tried to determine antioxidant properties and phenolic contents of grape and grape products (fresh fruit, seed, dried fruit, molasses, pestil, vinegar) of ethanol and water extracts. Antioxidant properties of extracts were investigated by DPPH center dot, ABTS(center dot+), superoxide, H2O2 scavenging, reducing power, metal chelating activity and determination of total phenolic contents. The seed extracts revealed highest ABTS(center dot+), DPPH center dot, H2O2 scavenging and reducing power activities. Furthermore, these extracts showed higher total phenolic contents than other grape product extracts.

Cyano-complexes and salts with tetracyanonickellateII and N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-ethylenediamine: synthesis, IR spectra, magnetic properties, thermal analyses, and crystal structures

    Karadag, A.; Korkmaz, S. Aslan; Andaç, O.; Yerli, Y.; Topcu, Y.

Four cyano complexes, [Ni(N-bishydeten)Ni(CN)(4)](n) (c1), [Cu(N-bishydeten)(2)][Ni(CN)(4)] (c2), [Zn-2(N-bishydeten)(2)Ni(CN)(4)](n) (c3), and [Cd(N-bishydeten)(2)][Ni(CN)(4)] (c4), have been synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, elemental, and thermal analyses. The structures of c2 and c4 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies; both structures contain isolated cations and anions. The c2 consists of [Cu(N-bishydeten)(2)](2+) with octahedrally coordinated Cu-II and diamagnetic [Ni(CN)(4)](2-), but c4 consists of [Cd(N-bishydeten)(2)](2+), in which Cd-II is eight coordinate with two tetradentate N-bishydeten and diamagnetic [Ni(CN)(4)](2-). The value of the shape measure S (degrees) indicates that the coordination geometry around Cd-II lies along D-2d [dodecahedron; (dd)], C-2v [bicapped trigonal prism; (btp)], and D-4d [square antiprism; (sap)] but close to D-2d and D-4d. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of c1 and c2 show the presence of little antiferromagnetic interaction below 20 K. Thermal analyses reveal that first neutral N-bishydeten and then cyano ligands were liberated from the complexes.

The essential oils of the aerial parts of two Hypericum taxa (Hypericum triquetrifolium and Hypericum aviculariifolium subsp depilatum var. depilatum (Clusiaceae)) from Turkey

    Yuce, Ebru; Bagci, Eyup

In this study, essential oil compositions of two Hypericum L. taxa (Hypericum triquetrifolium Turra. and Hypericum aviculariifolium Jaub. et Spach subsp. depilatum var. depilatum (Freyn et Bornm.) Robson) naturally grown in Turkey were determined using gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry systems. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation from the aerial parts of plants. A total of 45 compounds were identified in the essential oils of H. triquetrifolium; 1-hexanal (18.8%), 3-methylnonane (12.5%) and alpha-pinene (12.3%). In this study, 41 components were identified in H. aviculariifolium subsp. depilatum var. depilatum oil; alpha-pinene (52.1%), germacrene D (8.5%) and beta-pinene (3.6%) were the predominant constituents. The essential oil analysis showed that monoterpene concentrations were higher than that of the sesquiterpenes in both oils. The results were discussed in the meaning of the usefulness of these plants and their chemicals as natural products and potential usage in chemotaxonomy.

Constituents of the Essential Oils of Two Hypericum capitatum Choisy Varieties (var. capitatum and var. luteum Robson) from Turkey

    Bagci, Eyup; Yuce, Ebru

The essential oils from the aerial parts of two varieties (var. capitatum and var. luteum Robson) of Hypericum capitatum (Sect. Drosanthe) grown in Turkey were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Forty-eight compounds were identified in the essential oils of var. capitatum with alpha-pinene (20.3 %), caryophyllene oxide (11.8 %), hexadecanoic acid (8.9 %), beta-caryophyllene (6.5 %) and undecane (3.8 %) as main constituents. Thirty-eight components were identified in the oil of var. luteum with camphor (15.3 %), germacrene D (10.5 %), beta-myrcene (7.4 %), caryophyllene oxide (6.5 %) and beta-cububene (6.3 %), as the abundant components. More quantitative and qualitative differences were determined between two varieties of H. capitatum essential oils. The results were discussed in means of renewable resources and chemotaxonomy.

The Nature of the Crustal Structure of the Eastern Anatolian Plateau, Turkey

Yilmaz, Ali; Yilmaz, Huseyin; Kaya, Cemal; Boztug, Durmus

The Eastern Anatolian Plateau (EAP) of Turkey, with an elevation ranging from 1700 to 2000 m, is located between the Eastern Pontide Arc to the north and the Arabian Platform to the south. In this region, pre-Maastrichtian tectonic units representing the crust crop out in only a few localities. As they are covered by Maastrichtian-Quaternary rock units, it is difficult to study the nature and mutual relationships of these pre-Maastrichtian tectonic units. The palaeotectonic units of the EAP comprise two different levels in the present study: (1) The lower level consists of platform-type carbonates and their metamorphic equivalents. These units may represent the Taurus Platform and its metamorphic equivalents. (2) The upper level consists of an ophiolitic-melange prism which is made up mainly of oceanic crust; the prism comprises a complex of ophiolite, ophiolitic melange, and fore-arc deposits. This upper unit represents a subduction-accretion prism and may have originated partly from the North Anatolian Suture to the north, and partly from the South-eastern Anatolian Suture to the south. Continental crustal rocks were thrust over by the ophiolitic melange prism; thus outcrops of them are scarce in the region as they are exposed in tectonic windows through the ophiolitic thrust sheets. The pre-Maastrichtian tectonic units of the EAP are blanketed by Maastrichtian to Quaternary volcanic and sedimentary rock units; these sequences include successive transgressive and regressive intervals and overlie the palaeotectonic units along a pronounced unconformity. Olistostromal units are abundant in the Eocene sedimentary units and were derived from the ophiolites and ophiolitic melange. The Maastrichtian-Quaternary cover is made up of collisional and post-collisional deposits across the whole region. Although the EAP has been experiencing considerable N-S compression, it has not been affected by significant crustal thickening because of the strike-slip tectonic regime that is dominant in the region.
