Investigation of heavy metal accumulation in Typha latifolia exposed to mine drainage waters

    Tatar, Sule; Okuduci, Ebru

In this study, the accumulation of some heavy metals in water, sediment, and Typha latifolia plant species was investigated in a previously operated mining area located in the Hozat region of Tunceli. In the first phase of the study, water and soil samples were collected from sites where T. latifolia was dominant. The metal uptake capacities from soil to roots, stems, and leaves of the plants were examined for different metals as silver (Ag), barium (Ba), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), strontium (Sr), zinc (Zn). Water, sediment, and plant samples collected from the field were analyzed for the above elements at ultra-low detection limits using ICP-MS at ACME Analytical Laboratories in Canada. Bioconcentration factors (BCF-R, BCF-S, BCF-L, respectively) for the root, stem, leaf, and translocation factor (TF) values were calculated. The highest TF value was found to be 0.85 for Sr. The highest bioconcentration factors in the root, stem, and leaves of the plant were also found to be 3.67, 1.55, and 1.79 for Sr, respectively. According to the results obtained, T. latifolia was found to be a suitable plant for the bioaccumulation of Cd, Pb, Cu, and Sr under the existing environmental conditions, but not a suitable bioaccumulator for Ag, Ba, Ni, and Zn. Based on the results, it was determined that some heavy metal pollutants can be remediated using certain plants, and that these plants can function as bioaccumulators for these metals.

Upcycling Agricultural Biomass into Functional Bio-Oils through Pyrolysis: Toward Sustainable Rejuvenation of Asphalt Binder

Furtana Yalcin, Beyza; Yilmaz, Mehmet; Yalçin, Erkut; Vural Kok, Baha

This study investigates the feasibility of utilizing bio-oils derived from agricultural waste materials (such as straw, olive pomace, and pine cones) as rejuvenating additives in reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) containing bituminous mixtures, offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach in asphalt technology. The primary objective of the study is to enhance the physical and mechanical properties of aged binders using ecofriendly alternatives, thereby developing high-performance asphalt mixtures without harming the environment. The bio-oils, produced through pyrolysis, were evaluated in comparison with two commercial rejuvenators. Key performance criteria, including Marshall stability, moisture damage resistance (TSR), indirect tensile stiffness modulus (ITSM), and fatigue life, were tested. The results indicate that natural rejuvenators not only soften the aged binder but also effectively balance the flexibility, strength, and deformation resistance of the mixture. Notably, straw oil exhibited superior performance in terms of both high stability and extended fatigue life, while olive pomace oil demonstrated remarkable success in moisture resistance. Although commercial additives were effective to a certain extent, they failed to achieve the same level of structural compatibility and sustainability provided by natural bio-oils. In this regard, the study provides strong evidence that agricultural biomass waste can serve as a value-added solution in asphalt pavements, in alignment with the principles of the circular economy. In conclusion revealed that mixtures containing 75% RAP rejuvenated with straw oil achieved 11% higher Marshall stability and up to 14.5 times longer fatigue life compared to virgin mixtures, while olive pomace oil-based mixtures reached a TSR value of 81.5%, demonstrating superior moisture resistance.

Optimization of native plant selection for phytomining of strategic/critical raw materials using Artificial Bee Colony algorithm

Arslan Topal, E. Işıl; Topal, Murat; Çelik, Erdal; Öbek, Erdal

This study investigates the potential of native plant species (NPs) as secondary sources for strategic/critical raw materials (SCRMs) through phytomining, aiming to identify the most efficient accumulator for sustainable element recovery. To achieve high-precision results, the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm, a robust meta-heuristic optimization technique inspired by the foraging behavior of honeybees, was utilized to minimize the error between experimental data and predicted models to optimize the accumulation of key elements including cobalt (Co), strontium (Sr), antimony (Sb), vanadium (V), phosphorus (P), lanthanum (La), magnesium (Mg), titanium (Ti), aluminum (Al), and scandium (Sc). The research focused on three NP species—Musk thistle (MT), curly dock (CD), and Juncus (JS)—collected from a geothermal hot spring area. Methodological validation was performed through comparative statistical analysis and the calculation of bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) to assess phytoremediation efficiency. The ABC optimization results revealed that MT exhibited the most significant accumulation capacity, particularly for Mg, reaching a peak concentration of 3,910 mg/kgdw in the leaves. The concentration range (lowest to highest value) was between 0.01 (for La) and 3,910 mg/kgdw for the studied plants. Principal component analysis (PCA) corroborated these findings, explaining cumulative variances of 80.4% (MT), 89.4% (CD), and 76.4% (JS). The innovation of this study lies in the application of the ABC algorithm to the field of phytomining, which offers a more dynamic and flexible alternative to traditional regression-based models. The primary advantage of this proposed method is its superior global search capability and ability to handle multi-elemental interactions with high predictive accuracy. However, a potential disadvantage remains the computational complexity and the requirement for fine-tuning control parameters to ensure consistent convergence. Overall, MT is identified as a highly promising candidate for the phytomining of SCRMs, with Mg emerging as the most effectively accumulated element under the optimized ABC model.

Sustainable land management under uncertainty: A hybrid Bayesian BWM and RPM framework for spatial prioritization

    Konurhan, Zekeriya

Sustainable land management is a complex problem due to environmental constraints and decision-maker uncertainty. This study presents an integrated solution combining Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the Bayesian Best-Worst Method (Bayesian BWM), and the Ratio Product Model (RPM) to improve the accuracy of spatial prioritization in land-use decisions. The integration of the Bayesian BWM and RPM statistically minimizes the cognitive uncertainty in expert opinions whilst enabling the most suitable areas to be ranked with precision within their own categories, without any normalization constraints. The proposed model was developed for three main categories —residential, industrial, and agricultural— in the province of Balıkesir. The analysis results revealed that the ‘ease of access to services’ (0.5660) criterion was the most decisive factor for residential suitability, whilst ‘distance to power transmission lines’ (0.1322) and ‘average rainfall’ (0.1315) were the most decisive factors for industry and agriculture, respectively. The suitability maps show that the Bandırma-Susurluk corridor is strategically prioritized for industry, whilst the Manyas-Gönen basin is prioritized for agricultural production. RPM scores (0.2750 for settlement, 0.6036 for industry, and 0.3868 for agriculture) quantify implementation priorities, providing a reliable decision-support tool for managing uncertainty in spatial planning.

Assessing Environmental Policy Impact through the Ecological Footprint: The Case of Türkiye

    Sarı, Sacit

This study investigates the long-term effectiveness of environmental policies in Türkiye by examining the stochastic properties of the ecological footprint (EF) and its six subcomponents, carbon footprint, cropland footprint, grazing land footprint, forest products footprint, fishing grounds footprint, and built-up land footprint over the period 1961–2022. Annual per capita data obtained from the Global Footprint Network are analyzed using two-unit root testing methodologies: the conventional Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test and the more robust RALS-LM unit root test, which accounts for structural breaks and non-normal error distributions. The findings reveal that both the EF and its largest component, the CF, are stationary, suggesting that past environmental policy interventions have yielded transitory effects. Only the CRF and FGF exhibit nonstationarity, indicating that agricultural and fisheries-related policies may have induced permanent shifts in environmental outcomes. Overall, the results suggest that environmental policies in Türkiye to date have not led to long-term and permanent improvements in the ecological footprint indicator. Therefore, it is concluded that policy design should be more comprehensive, consistent, and structurally transformative to achieve environmental sustainability.

Shaping the Future of Datça Peninsula: Exploring Suitable Settlement Areas and Land-Use Scenarios

    Konurhan, Zekeriya; Ceylan, Mehmet Akif

This study examines land use/land cover (LULC) scenarios and identifies areas suitable for settlement on the Datça Peninsula. Datça is one of the four peninsulas in the Aegean Sea and is administratively part of the Muğla province of Türkiye. Forests prevail across the landscape, especially around the stretch shaped by the Datça–Marmaris highway, while agriculture is concentrated on the Datça Plain, Cumali, and Yaka. This study aims to determine land use scenarios and identify suitable areas for future development and settlement. The GeoSOS-FLUS software package, developed based on Markov Chains and Artificial Neural Networks for land use simulations, was used. Aware of the limitations of simulations that do not consider land suitability, a suitability analysis was performed using the Best-Worst Method (BWM), one of the Multi-Criteria Decision Making approaches. Sixteen criteria within four groups—topography, socioeconomics, location, and environment—were evaluated. The suitability analysis results were compared with simulated land use scenarios, and the most suitable areas for future settlements in the Datça Peninsula were identified. This integrated approach provides important information for the sustainable development of the region and the shaping of land use planning.

INVESTIGATING AND PLANNING ECOTOURISM AREA FOCUSED ON FOREST VILLAGERS VIA THE ANALYTICAL HIERARCHY PROCESS

    ESER, Nazlı; BİLİCİ, Ebru

Ecotourism has emerged as an alternative form of tourism that brings together urban dwellers and forest villagers, while also promoting the sustainability of forest resources. This study aimed to identify the key factors influencing ecotourism in forest villages and to determine the most suitable areas based on these factors. Giresun province served as the study area, where we collected data through interviews with stakeholders and industry professionals. The collected data were analysed using the SPSS23 program and the AHP analysis, which resulted in the identification of influential factors and the mapping of suitable ecotourism areas using ArcGIS 10.8. As a result of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk tests, it was observed that the data showed a normal distribution and there was a significant relationship between the variables (p > 0,05). The findings from the interviews revealed that ecotourism can serve as a significant source of income and be pursued as a full-time occupation. Furthermore, it was determined that 50 forest villages in Giresun are situated within the most suitable ecotourism area. Based on the comprehensive analyses conducted, this study will establish an economically viable access road to the forest village, facilitating optimal land-use planning in the designated areas.

Examination of Numerical Changes in Goat and Buffalo Population in TRB1 Region with Cluster Analysis; [Examination of Numerical Changes in Goat and Buffalo Population in TRB1 Region with Cluster Analysis]

    Çimen, Murat; Güven, Alper

In this study, the effectiveness of using cluster analysis in determining the changes in the number of animals in the field of goat and buffalo breeding in the TRB1 region was tested. The numbers of goats and buffalos used in the research were obtained from the records kept by TÜİK between 2004 and 2023. According to the cluster analysis results, the numbers of buffalos in Elazığ and Bingöl provinces was found to be higher than Malatya and Tunceli provinces between 2004 and 2023. According to the specified years, while Bingöl province was found to be higher than other provinces in terms of the numbers of goats, it was determined that Malatya province had the lowest values. When analyzed by year, the numbers of buffalos in the provinces of the TRB1 region for the years 2004-2006 was found to be higher than the following years. In other words, it is understood that the numbers of buffalos has been decreasing in the TRB1 region since 2007. In the TRB1 region, goat numbers between 2012-2023 were found to be higher than those between 2004-2011. Accordingly, it can be said that there has been an increase in the number of goats in the TRB1 region since 2012. In the TRB1 region, appropriate regulations need to be made, taking into account the differences between provinces and years in terms of the numbers of buffalos and goats. In this study, it was seen that cluster analysis could be used successfully in determining the differences in animal numbers according to provinces and years.

Exploring the Grazing Land Footprint’s Stochastic Behavior in the Top Dairy and Meat-Producing Nations

Adali, Zafer; Yeter, Fatih; Çoban, Mustafa Necati; Sarı, Sacit

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of influential and easily understood sustainability principles. SDG2 defines Zero Hunger, which is once again a key goal in the SDGs. A sustainable food system depends on the grazing land footprint, one of the elements of the ecological footprint. For food security to be maintained, the grazing land footprint has to be taken into consideration. In order to provide adequate global food systems and mitigate climate change, research on the stochastic features of grazing land footprint is crucial. The goal of this research is to look at the stochastic characteristics of the grazing land footprint in 13 nations that produce almost two-thirds of the world’s milk and meat. The study includes data for 13 nations over the years 1961–2022. Several unit root tests are conducted to provide more precise data about the effectiveness of the policy shocks, including whether or not they allow for repeated, smooth structural breakdowns. The results show that because the series is prone to following its long-term trends, shocks cannot lead it to diverge from those trends. Thus, any shocks brought on by policies cannot have a lasting effect on the series. However, the series includes a unit root. The unit root tests have made it clear that any policy shocks would have a long-lasting effect on the series and that policymakers may set a goal for the series. Policy suggestions have been provided for the investigated nations in conjunction with these results.

New Record of Two Dreissenid Species (Dreissena polymorpha gallandi and Dreissena caputlacus) in Kelkit Basin (NE Anatolia): Evaluation of Morphological Divergence Based on Altitude Using Statistical Tools

Kocabaş, Mehmet; Bozali, Nuri; Kocabaş, Filiz Kutluyer; Kara, Cemil; Gürlek, Mustafa Emre

Abstract: Non-indigenous species in an ecosystem increase the potential of novel ecological relationships and can dramatically affect community composition and ecosystem roles. This study examined the spatial distribution of Dreissena caputlacus and Dreissena polymorpha gallandi within the Kelkit Basin located in Northeastern Anatolia. A total of 75 sampling locations representing various habitats were surveyed in the Kelkit Basin. The presence of D. p. gallandi and D. caputlacus was identified for the first time in the basin. The effects of altitude on the population structure, geographic distribution, and shell traits of D. p. gallandi and D. caputlacus were also assessed in a range of ecosystems. The highest shell length (SL) for D. caputlacus was recorded at 566 m altitude with values of 25.58 ± 5.80 mm while the highest SL value for D. p. gallandi was 24.15 ± 5.13 mm at 610 m altitude. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed a strong association among shell length (SL), shell height (SH), shell width (SW), and weight (W). In conclusion, the diverse altitudinal distribution of samples strengthened the evidence that shell features differ with changes in altitude.

Investigating forest fire causes through an integrated Bayesian network and geographic information system approach

Konurhan, Zekeriya; Yucesan, Melih; Gul, Muhammet

Forests are among the most critical natural resources worldwide and are essential for a sustainable ecosystem. In recent years, climate change and human activities have increased their impact on forests, and forest fires-especially in summer- have caused significant forest losses globally. This paper integrates Bayesian Network (BN) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to pinpoint the possible causes of forest fires and analyze their complex interactions. The study used data from 1465 fires between 2017 and 2022 in Muğla province in southwestern Türkiye. Within the scope of the study, 11 variables were chosen, such as elevation, slope, aspect, wind speed, population density, and road network, to build a BN model that combines physical and human geographical features. These variables overlapped using the pairwise intersect tool from ArcGIS Pro during the BN model setup, and probability values were calculated. The overall probability of fire in the BN model was determined to be 0.81, with probabilities ranging from 0.81 to 0.56 in low-altitude, moderately sloped, and south-facing areas. Scenario analyses examined fire risk under different conditions, highlighting the most influential variables for fire prevention efforts. The study identified fire-prone areas as spatial data, revealing that densely forested coastal and certain inland regions are at higher risk, whereas bare high-altitude areas with steep slopes pose lower risk. The BN model can be further enhanced by incorporating additional variables, making it a valuable tool for future fire risk assessment and mitigation strategies research.

Aydın, Sevinç; Karaca Sanyürek, Nesrin; Yaman, Hümeyra; Yılmaz, Ömer

Traditional methods used to increase plant productivity from the past to the present cause problems owing to their toxicological effects on organism resistance and living things. This has stipulated the creation of strategies to boost plant productivity without adversely affecting the health of living things. Essential oils secreted from various parts of plants stand out as, sustainable, and improvable alternatives and have been the subject of numerous types of research as they have many functional properties. The present research covers the investigation of the allelopathic effect of essential oils of Greek Oregano (Origanum vulgare L. subsp. hirtum), Lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia), and common sage (Salvia officinalis L.) on oilseed plants (Cephalaria syriaca L., Camelina sativa L.) at different ratios. Inhibitory effects of the essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation on the seeds of Cephalaria syriaca L. and Camelina sativa L. species at different concentrations were analyzed under sterile in vitro conditions. The inhibitory effects of essential oils and concentrations were analyzed using the Friedman test. The research revealed that essential oils were effective in weed control through their high inhibitory effect against Cephalaria syriaca L. seeds while reducing the germination power of Camelina sativa L.

Exposure and connectedness to natural environments: An examination of the measurement invariance of the Nature Exposure Scale (NES) and Connectedness to Nature Scale (CNS) across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups

Swami, Viren; White, Mathew P.; Voracek, Martin; Tran, Ulrich S.; Aavik, Toivo; Ranjbar, Hamed Abdollahpour; Adebayo, Sulaiman Olanrewaju; Afhami, Reza; Ahmed, Oli; Aimé, Annie

Detachment from nature is contributing to the environmental crisis and reversing this trend requires detailed monitoring and targeted interventions to reconnect people to nature. Most tools measuring nature exposure and attachment were developed in high-income countries and little is known about their robustness across national and linguistic groups. Therefore, we used data from the Body Image in Nature Survey to assess measurement invariance of the Nature Exposure Scale (NES) and the Connectedness to Nature Scale (CNS) across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups (N = 56,968). While multi-group confirmatory factor analysis (MG-CFA) of the NES supported full scalar invariance across gender identities and age groups, only partial scalar invariance was supported across national and linguistic groups. MG-CFA of the CNS also supported full scalar invariance across gender identities and age groups, but only partial scalar invariance of a 7-item version of the CNS across national and linguistic groups. Nation-level associations between NES and CNS scores were negligible, likely reflecting a lack of conceptual clarity over what the NES is measuring. Individual-level associations between both measures and sociodemographic variables were weak. Findings suggest that the CNS-7 may be a useful tool to measure nature connectedness globally, but measures other than the NES may be needed to capture nature exposure cross-culturally.

The epiphytic bryophyte succession of Buxus sempervirens forests in the Fırtına Valley, Rize (North Türkiye)

Ezer, Tülay; Alataş, Mevlüt; Batan, Nevzat; Erata, Hüseyin

In this study, the epiphytic bryophyte succession of the Buxus sempervirens L. forests in Fırtına Valley (Çamlıhemşin-Rize, North Türkiye), one of the nine biodiversity hotspots in Türkiye, was investigated. For this pur-pose, a total of 60 sampling plots were taken from the live trunks of B. sempervirens trees of different ages. Twenty-nine epiphytic bryophyte species were determined (24 mosses and 5 liverworts) within the sample plots. Also, six different life form types and four different habitat affinity categories were determined. Among them, the mat type life form is in first place with 34.4% and the cortico-saxicolous species are the most common with 51.7%. Two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) classified the epiphytic bryophyte communities on B. sempervirens trunks at the second level into two main clusters (A and B) and three sub-clusters (A1, B1 and, B2). Detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) axis 1 was interpreted as gradient along the height of the epiphytic habitat (from the lower base to the upper zone) on trunks and the DCA axis 2 was interpreted as gradient of moisture (from mesic to xeric). Exsertotheca crispa (Hedw.) S. Olsson, Enroth & D. Quandt was the species with the highest index of ecological significance (IES) value on the lower bases of the aged trees. Species diversity and epiphytic cover in the upper zones were lower than in the basal and middle zones in the study area. While Metzgeria furcata, (L.) Corda, Oxyrrhynchium hians (Hedw.) Loeske, Plagiothecium nemorale (Mitt.) A.Jaeger, and Radula lindenbergiana Gottsche ex C.Hartm were only found on old trees, Ctenidium molluscum (Hedw.) Mitt. and Pseudoleskeella nervosa (Brid.) Nyholm were only found on middle-aged trees.

The Fırtına Valley forests are of the 100 forests in the world whose conservation is a priority due to the natural old forests they have. In this study, the epiphytic bryophyte vegetation of the Buxus sempervirens L. forests located in the Fırtına Valley (Rize, Northern Turkey), which is one of the nine hotspots in Turkey and Turkey’s only boxwood forest, was investigated. The relevés taken from living tree trunks in 2020 were analyzed according to the Braun-Blanquet methodology, and ordinated and classified using the Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DECORANA) and the Two-Way Indicator Species Analysis (TWINSPAN). As a result of the analyses, Exsertotheco crispae-Allenielletum besseri ass. nov. subass. typicum and leucodontetosum sciuroidis subass. nov., and Alleniello besseri-Palamocladietum euchloronis ass. nov. were described and characterized. All syntaxa were presented by analyzing them in terms of their ecological and floristic classifications.

The epiphytic bryophyte succession of Picea orientalis forests on the Kümbet High Plateau (Giresun-Turkey); [Sukcesija epifitskih briofita u šumama Picea orientalis na visoravni Kümbet (Giresun-Turska)]

In this study, the epiphytic bryophyte succession of Picea orientalis forests on the Kümbet High Plateau (Giresun-Turkey) were studied. A total of 21 epiphytic bryophyte species were determined (16 mosses and 5 liverworts). The epiphytic bryophyte communities were sampled in 60 sample plots taken from the trunks of Picea orientalis, each of which was 20 × 20 cm in size. The Index of Ecological Significance (IES), based on a combination of the relative frequency and mean cover of epiphytic bryophytes, was used to evaluate the abundance of bryophyte communities in epiphytic habitats on the tree trunks. In addition, multivariate classification techniques (TWINSPAN and DECORANA) were used to classify the community structures in successional stages. TWINSPAN divided the 60 sample plots into two main groups: a) the lower base communities (LB) and b) the middleupper zone communities (MU). Moreover, the middle-upper zone communities (MU) were divided into two sub-groups associated with the successional gradient (MU1 and MU2). DECORANA classified these communities along the ordination axes 1 and 3 related to the height gradient of Picea orientalis and the moisture (from mesic to xeric) gradient of the epiphytic habitat. While Exsertotheca crispa, Cynodontium fallax, Lewinskya striata, and Habrodon perpusillus were only found on old spruce trees, Drepanium fastigiatum was only found on young trees and Lophocolea heterophylla was only found on middle-aged trees.

The use of Phanerochaete chrysosporium as an alternative bioremedia-tion tool of heavy metal, chemical oxygen demand and phosphate from landfill leachate

Yildirim, Numan; Kardas, Elif; Ince, Muharrem

In this study, in order to investigate the bioremediation efficiency of Phanerochaete chrysosporium, chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction, total phosphate levels and heavy metal (Fe2+, Mn2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+) removal were determined in five different experimental groups (control, X, Y, Z, and T) under static culture conditions containing leachate at different incubation periods (5, 10, and 20 d). At the end of the 20th day of incubation, 84% Mn2+ and Zn2+ removal was achieved in X application group. In the same application group, 90.88% COD reduction was also obtained. The lowest total phosphate value was determined as 2.63 g L–1 in T group compared with control group (5.0 g L–1). Similar improvements have been identified in other application groups in terms of metal removal, total phosphate levels and COD reduction. As a result, the findings obtained from our study show that white rot fungus P. chrysosporium can be used as an alternative biological resource in the studies for improving landfill leachate in terms of metal removal efficacy, COD and total phosphate level reduction capacity.
