Effect of brine and dry salting methods on the physicochemical and microbial quality of chub (Squalius cephalus Linnaeus, 1758)

    Bonoco, Arzu; Kurt Kaya, Gülderen

The present study, looks at the physicochemical and microbiological quality changes that occur due to different salting techniques (20% salt concentration) of chub (Squalius cephalus) and when stored in 4 ± 0.5 °C. Samples of fish from each group was taken on the 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120th day and was analyzed for nutritional component (crude protein, lipid, moisture, crude ash), pH value, salt content and the microbial flora (total mesophilic aerobic bacteria count, total coliform, total psychrophilic aerobic bacteria count, yeast and mould). Ot was determined that crude protein, lipid, crude ash and salt amounts in the group where dry salting method was applied were higher than the group where brine salting occurred, in addition protein and lipid values decreased as storage period was longer (P < 0.05). Ot was determined that there is an increase in total aerobic mesophilic, psycrophile bacteria and enumeration of yeast and mould as storage period increased, while coliform bacteria decreased (P < 0.05).

Effects of conventional and organic rearing systems and hen age on oxidative stress parameters of blood and ovarian tissues in laying hens; [Konvansiyonel ve organik yetiştirme sistemleri ile tavuk yaşının yumurta tavuklarının kan ve yumurtalık dokusundaki oksidatif stres parametreleri üzerine etkisi]

Şimşek, Ülkü Gülcihan; Baykalir, Yasin; Erişir, Mine; Benzer, Fulya

In this study, effects of hen age and rearing systems on some oxidative stress parameters in serum and ovarian tissues of hens are investigated. For this purpose, total of 48 Bovans White commercial laying hybrids from two different rearing systems (conventional cage and organic) at 30 and 60 weeks of age were used. Serum and ovarian tissues of the hens were collected following slaughter process and malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and catalase (CAT) levels of serum and ovarian tissues were determined. MDA levels of serum was found significantly higher in conventional system, both in 30 and 60 weeks old (P<0.05). GSH-Px activity was lower, conversely CAT activity was significantly higher in conventional system (P<0.05). Hen age didn’t affect MDA, GSH, GSH-Px and CAT levels of serum (P>0.05). In addition, there weren’t any significant interactions between rearing system and hen age in serum (P>0.05). MDA (P=0.010) and GSH (P<0.01) levels of ovarian tissue were found significantly higher in conventional system while GSH levels of ovarian tissue had increased in 60 weeks old (P<0.01). GSH-Px and CAT activity was similar between groups (P>0.05). Interaction between rearing system and hen age affected activity of CAT in ovarian tissue (P<0.05). As a result, conventional battery cages caused oxidative stress interrelated with increasing lipid peroxidation and MDA levels in laying hens. Antioxidant enzymes that play role in reduction of MDA were inadequate in this system. Oxidant/antioxidant balance can be established at 30 or 60 weeks of age by hen organism and therefore MDA levels of tissues would not be affected by age.

Holographic reconstruction of scalar fields in extended Kaluza Klein cosmology

    Korunur, Murat

In recent years, many studies have been conducted to reconstruct the physical properties of scalar fields by establishing a connection between some energy densities and a scalar field of dark energies. In this paper, using the extended five-dimensional (5D) Kaluza- Klein model, we establish a correspondence among modified holographic dark energy and the tachyon, K-essence and dilaton scalar-field models. We also graphically illustrate the evolution of the equation-of-state parameter versus time.

Preliminary geochemical data of the mafic rocks from the ovacik and Pülümür ophiolite zone (Eastern Anatolia, Turkey): Implications for the geodynamic evolution of the northern neotethyan ocean

    Çimen, Okay; Önal, Ayten Öztüfekçi

The İzmir-Ankara-Erzincan-Sevan-Akera Suture Belt (IAESASB) stretches from the Aegean Sea to the Lesser Caucasus and includes the remnants of the Northern Neotethys. The Ovacık and Pülümür Ophiolite Zone (OPOZ) to the north of Tunceli is less-known members of this belt. In this study, preliminary geochemical data from the basaltic and gabbroic rocks from this zone are presented to provide the first insights into their geochemistry. The studied mafic samples exhibit geochemical characteristics of an intra-oceanic subduction system. Three types of samples were differentiated on the basis of their major, trace and rare earth element (REE) geochemistry. The first one is boninitic and displays highly depleted elemental pattern (relative to N-MORB) and concave REE profile. The second type is akin to back-arc basin basalts (BABB) and generally reflects normal-MORB (NMORB)-like high field strength element (HFSE) patterns coupled with negative Nb anomalies. The last type is relatively similar to the BABB-type, but it lacks the marked negative anomaly in Nb and can be ascribed to the mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB). The overall geochemical features suggest that these mafic rocks were predominantly generated in a supra-subduction setting from a subduction-modified mantle source. It is further suggested that the Ovacık and Pülümür Ophiolite Zone was formed in an oceanic arc-basin system within the northward subducting Northern Neotethys.

An efficient compression of ECG signals using deep convolutional autoencoders

Yildirim, Ozal; Tan, Ru San; Acharya, U. Rajendra

Background and objective: Advances in information technology have facilitated the retrieval and processing of biomedical data. Especially with wearable technologies and mobile platforms, we are able to follow our healthcare data, such as electrocardiograms (ECG), in real time. However, the hardware resources of these technologies are limited. For this reason, the optimal storage and safe transmission of the personal health data is critical. This study proposes a new deep convolutional autoencoder (CAE) model for compressing ECG signals. Methods: In this paper, a deep network structure of 27 layers consisting of encoder and decoder parts is designed. In the encoder section of this model, the signals are reduced to low-dimensional vectors; and in the decoder section, the signals are reconstructed. The deep learning approach provides the representations of the low and high levels of signals in the hidden layers of the model. Hence, the original signal can be reconstructed with minimal loss. Very different from traditional linear transformation methods, a deep compression approach implies that it can learn to use different ECG records automatically. Results: The performance was evaluated on an experimental data set comprising 4800 ECG fragments from 48 unique clinical patients. The compression rate (CR) of the proposed model was 32.25, and the average PRD value was 2.73%. These favourable observation suggest that our deep model can allow secure data transfer in a low-dimensional form to remote medical centers. We present an effective compression approach that can potentially be used in wearable devices, e-health applications, telemetry and Holter systems.

    Doping assessment in GaAs nanowires

    Goktas, N Isik; Fiordaliso, E.M.; Lapierre, R.R.

Semiconductor nanowires (NWs) are a candidate technology for future optoelectronic devices. One of the critical issues in NWs is the control of impurity doping for the formation of p-n junctions. In this study, beryllium (p-type dopant) and tellurium (n-type dopant) in self-assisted GaAs NWs was studied. The GaAs NWs were grown on (111) Si by molecular beam epitaxy using the self-assisted method. The dopant incorporation in the self-assisted GaAs NWs was investigated using Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence, secondary ion mass spectrometry and electron holography. Be-doped NWs showed similar carrier concentration as compared to thin film (TF) standards. However, Te-doped NWs showed at least a one order of magnitude lower carrier concentration as compared to TF standards. Dopant incorporation mechanisms in NWs are discussed.

Boron, carbon, oxygen and radiogenic isotope investigation of carbonatite from the Miaoya complex, central China: Evidences for late-stage REE hydrothermal event and mantle source heterogeneity

    Çimen, O.; Kuebler, C.; Monaco, B.; Simonetti, S.S.; Corcoran, L.; Chen, W.; Simonetti, A.

The Miaoya carbonatite complex (MCC) is located within the southern edge of the Qinling orogenic belt in central China, and is associated with significant rare earth element (REE) and Nb mineralization. The MCC consists of syenite and carbonatite that were emplaced within Neo- to Mesoproterozoic-aged supracrustal units. The carbonatite intruded the associated syenite as stocks and dikes, and is mainly composed of medium- to fine-grained calcite and abundant REE-bearing minerals. Carbonatite melt generation and emplacement within the MCC occurred during the Silurian (at ~440 Ma), and was subsequently impacted by a late-stage hydrothermal event (~232 Ma) involving REE-rich fluids/melt. This study reports trace element and stable (B, C, and O) and radiogenic (Nd, Pb, and Sr) isotope data for the MCC carbonatite, and these have been subdivided into three groups that represent different REE contents, interpreted as varying degrees of hydrothermal interaction. Overall, the group of carbonatites with the lowest enrichment in LREEs (i.e., least affected by hydrothermal event) is characterized by δ11B values that vary between −7 (typical asthenospheric mantle) and + 4‰; δ11B values and B abundances (~0.2 to ~1 ppm) do not correlate with LREE contents. The Sm-Nd and Pb-Pb isotope systems have both been perturbed by the late-stage, REE-rich hydrothermal activity and corroborate open-system behavior. Contrarily, initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (vary between ~0.70355 and 0.70385) do not correlate significantly with both LREEs and Sr abundances, nor with initial 143Nd/144Nd ratios. The late-stage hydrothermal event overprinted the Nd and Pb isotope compositions for most of the carbonatite samples examined here, whereas a majority of the samples preserve their variable B and Sr isotope values inherited from their mantle source. The B and Sr isotope data for carbonatites exhibiting the least LREE enrichment correlate positively and suggest carbonatite melt generation from a heterogenous upper mantle source that records the input of recycled crustal material. This finding is consistent with those previously reported for young (<300 Ma old) carbonatites worldwide.

Response surface modeling for Pb(II) removal from alcoholic beverages using natural clay: Process optimization with box–behnken experimental design and determination by electrothermal AAS

Ince, Olcay Kaplan; Ince, Muharrem; Onal, Ali

A three-level four-factor Box–Behnken experimental design (BBD) combined with response surface modeling (RSM) was used for the optimization and modeling of Pb(II) adsorption from alcoholic beverages onto natural clay. The BBD method was chosen as the statistical prediction method to reduce the experimental numbers which saves time and chemicals and reduce analysis cost. Various independent process variables including solution pH (X1: 3.0– 7.0), contact time (X2: 2–60 min), adsorbent dosage (X3: 0.01-0.1 g), and agitation speed (X4: 50–150 rpm) were optimized. The optimal conditions used for Pb(II) removal were pH of 5.3, contact time 38.9 minutes, 0.071 g adsorbent dosage, and 98.7 rpm agitation speed, resulting in a maximum removal efficiency of 120 mg g-1. Pb was determined by electrothermal AAS. The significance of the independent variables and their interactions were tested by means of the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and are based on the ANOVA statistical value. The adsorption of Pb(II) onto clay was found to be highly significant with very low probability (p) values (<0.001). These results were justified by the relatively high correlation coefficients (R2 = 0.9965, R2 adj = 0.9930, and R2 Pred= 0.9819) of the statistical prediction. FTIR analysis confirmed major participation of amide, amines, ketones, including the primary alcohol groups, during Pb(II) biosorption. Clay was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), coupled with energy dispersive X-Ray (EDX). The proposed adsorption process efficiently removes Pb(II) present in various aqueous media and can be used for industrial wastewater or drinks.

Lightweight privacy-preserving data aggregation scheme for smart grid metering infrastructure protection

    Baloglu, Ulas Baran; Demir, Yakup

The electric industry's planned shift to smart grid metering infrastructure raised several concerns especially about preserving the privacy. Various data perturbation and aggregation solutions are being developed to address these concerns. The drawback of these solutions is that a simple random noise scheme cannot protect privacy, and there is a need for more advanced perturbation techniques to increase hardware costs of smart metering devices. The proposed data aggregation scheme combines the power of perturbation techniques with crypto-systems in an efficient and lightweight way so that it becomes applicable for devices with limited hardware, such as smart meters. We investigated the privacy preserving capabilities of the proposed aggregation scheme with Holt-Winters and Seasonal Trend Decomposition using Loess prediction methods. The results indicate that the proposed scheme is resilient to both filtering and true value attacks.

Complex acoustic gravity wave behaviors to some mathematical models arising in fluid dynamics and nonlinear dispersive media

Bulut, Hasan; Sulaiman, Tukur Abdulkadir; Baskonus, Haci Mehmet; Akturk, Tolga

This study acquires the wave solutions of the two well-known nonlinear models, namely; the modified Benjamin–Bona–Mahony and the coupled Klein–Gordon equations. The modified Benjamin–Bona–Mahony is a nonlinear model that describes the long surface gravity waves of small amplitude and the coupled Klein–Gordon equation describes the quantized version of the relativistic energy–momentum relation. We successfully acquire some new solutions to these models such as kink-type and soliton solutions in complex hyperbolic functions form. We plot the 3D and 2D surface of the all the obtained solutions in this study. The mathematical approach used in this study is the sine-Gordon expansion method.

Assessment of student achievement and views on the impact of instruction with visualization of identities in (ax+b)n form in mathematics

    Ilhan, Aziz; Çelik, Halil Coşkun

The aim of the present study is to examine the impact of instruction with visualization of identities in form in mathematics on students' achievement and opinions. The study employs an explanatory design, a mixed method, through which qualitative and quantitative data were collected and analysed. Quantitative data in the study were obtained using the Identities and Binomial Exponential Achievement Test to determine the effect of visualization-assisted instruction on students' academic achievement. Qualitative data, regarding the student views on the subject, were collected through a structured interview form. Participants of the study, 53 students, were selected by appropriate sampling method among the first-year univeristy students. The t-test and one-way covariance analysis were used to analyse the quantitative data and the content analysis method was used for the qualitative data. The results obtained from quantitative data indicated that instruction of algebraic expressions through mathematical visualization increased student achievement in comparison to traditional instruction. On the other hand, the qualitative data indicated that visualization facilitated a positive development in instruction of algebraic expressions, rendered the teaching process to be more interesting and enjoyable and led the students to acquire conceptual learning skills instead of memorizing.

An interval type-2 fuzzy AHP and TOPSIS methods for decision-making problems in maritime transportation engineering: The case of ship loader

    Celik, Erkan; Akyuz, Emre

Duration of cargo operation (loading or discharging) is of paramount importance for ship owners and port managers since idle time at terminal significantly boost to the cost of providing shipping service. Hence, it is important to choose the appropriate shiploader type for handling bulk materials. This paper aims to present a comprehensive multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) method extended by interval type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2FSs) for selecting appropriate shiploader type in maritime transportation. The proposed approach incorporates Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) under IT2FSs environment to overcome more of the uncertainty of experts’ judgement and expression in decision-making. The proposed approach adopts a sensitivity analysis to investigate the impact of key performance indicator (KPI) under numerous conditions. Besides its robust theoretical background, this paper prompts practical benefits to decision-makers (port owners or port managers) who make investment decision for appropriate shiploader type in dry bulk cargo shipment.

A novel wavelet sequences based on deep bidirectional LSTM network model for ECG signal classification

    Yildirim, Özal

Long-short term memory networks (LSTMs), which have recently emerged in sequential data analysis, are the most widely used type of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) architecture. Progress on the topic of deep learning includes successful adaptations of deep versions of these architectures. In this study, a new model for deep bidirectional LSTM network-based wavelet sequences called DBLSTM-WS was proposed for classifying electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. For this purpose, a new wavelet-based layer is implemented to generate ECG signal sequences. The ECG signals were decomposed into frequency sub-bands at different scales in this layer. These sub-bands are used as sequences for the input of LSTM networks. New network models that include unidirectional (ULSTM) and bidirectional (BLSTM) structures are designed for performance comparisons. Experimental studies have been performed for five different types of heartbeats obtained from the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. These five types are Normal Sinus Rhythm (NSR), Ventricular Premature Contraction (VPC), Paced Beat (PB), Left Bundle Branch Block (LBBB), and Right Bundle Branch Block (RBBB). The results show that the DBLSTM-WS model gives a high recognition performance of 99.39%. It has been observed that the wavelet-based layer proposed in the study significantly improves the recognition performance of conventional networks. This proposed network structure is an important approach that can be applied to similar signal processing problems.

A review of occupational health and safety risk assessment approaches based on multi-criteria decision-making methods and their fuzzy versions

    Gul, Muhammet

Occupational health and safety (OHS) is a multidisciplinary activity working under the tasks of protection of workers and worksites. Risk assessment, as a compulsory process in implementation of OHS, stands out as evaluating the risks arising from the hazards, taking into account the required control measures, and deciding whether or not the risks can be reduced to an acceptable level. The diversity in risk assessment approaches is such that there are many methods for any industry. Multicriteria decision-making (MCDM)-based approaches contribute to risk assessment knowledge with their ability on solving real-world problems with multiple, conflicting, and incommensurate criteria. This article conducts a critical state-of-the-art review of OHS risk assessment studies using MCDM-based approaches. Additionally, it includes fuzzy versions of MCDM approaches applied to OHS risk assessment. A total of 80 papers are classified in eight different application areas. The papers are reviewed by the points of publication trend, published journal, risk parameters/factors, and tools used. This critical review provides an insight for researchers and practitioners on MCDM-based OHS risk assessment approaches in terms of showing current state and potential areas for attempts to be focused in the future.

Curcumin ameliorates doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity by abrogation of inflammation, apoptosis, oxidative DNA damage, and protein oxidation in rats

Benzer, Fulya; Kandemir, Fatih Mehmet; Ozkaraca, Mustafa; Kucukler, Sefa; Caglayan, Cuneyt

Doxorubicin (DXR) is a highly effective drug for chemotherapy. However, cardiotoxicity reduces its clinical utility in humans. The present study aimed to assess the ameliorative effect of curcumin against DXR-induced cardiotoxicity in rats. Rats were subjected to oral treatment of curcumin (100 and 200 mg/kg body weight) for 7 days. Cardiotoxicity was induced by single intraperitoneal injection of DXR (40 mg/kg body weight) on the 5th day and the rats sacrificed on 8th day. Curcumin ameliorated DXR-induced lipid peroxidation, glutathione depletion, decrease in antioxidant (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase) enzyme activities, and cardiac toxicity markers (CK-MB, LDH, and cTn-I). Curcumin also attenuated activities of Caspase-3, cyclooxygenase-2, inducible nitric oxide synthase, and levels of nuclear factor kappa-B, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukin-1β, and cardiac tissue damages that were induced by DXR. Moreover, curcumin decreased the expression of 8-OHdG and 3,3′-dityrosine. This study demonstrated that curcumin has a multi-cardioprotective effect due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic properties.

Investigation of biochemical response in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum, 1792) exposed to remazol brillant blue R textile dye

    Yildirim, N.C.; Dogan, L.

The dyes used in textile industry production are toxic substances and most of them have polymer structures. These dyes pollute the aquatic environment via various stages such as printing and dyeing, and may cause molecular, cellular, biochemical and physiological disorders. The aim of the present study was to evaluate effect of a highly toxic azo dye, Remazol Brillant Blue (RBBR) on the biochemical responses of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. The fishes were exposed to 0.5, 1 and 2 mg/l of RBBR for 24 and 48 h. The glutathione S-transferase (GST), cytochrome P-450 (CYP1A1) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) enzyme activities of these groups were measured. Present dye altered the activities of all these enzymes in the selected tissue of the experimental fish in a dose-dependent manner. According to the results of this study, after dye exposure, the alteration of selected enzymes indicated deterioration in antioxidant defense system, aerobic respiration processes and biotransformation mechanism induced by the tested dye. It was also shown that GST, CYP1A1 and LDH enzymes may be useful as biomarkers in determining the toxic effects in O. mykiss exposed to the RBBR textile dye.

A FUZZY DEMATEL MODEL PROPOSAL FOR THE CAUSE AND EFFECT OF THE FAULT OCCURRING IN THE AUXILIARY SYSTEMS OF THE SHIPS’ MAIN ENGINE

    Balin, A.; Demirel, H.; Celik, E.; Alarcin, F.

The ship engine room has a structure that meets a number of needs related to administrative conditions. Even if a simple mechanical error is considered to be the addition of human errors into the complex structure of the engine room, it can lead to undetected loss. How the causes and effects of the detected faults affect the system is as important as an effective fault detection system to detect the fault and take immediate action against any possible engine failure. This study reveals the causes of problems occurring in the main engine auxiliary systems including cooling, lubricating, cooling oil and fuel systems, and the extent of these problems affecting the system. While the Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory supports to identify and analyze the error detection of auxiliary systems with respect to causal effect relation diagram, fuzzy sets deal with the uncertainty in decision-making and human judgements through the DEMATEL. Therefore, fuzzy DEMATEL approach is applied to examine the causes and the weights of the faults and their relation to each other in the auxiliary systems. When we look at the result of the proposed approach, fuel oil pump failures has more impact on the all system and air cooler problems has the second highest place among the all errors.
