This study comprehensively investigated the phenolic composition, antioxidant potential, and α-glucosidase inhibitory properties of B. aspera Steven ex Ledeb. extracts using integrated in vitro and in silico approaches. LC-MS/MS analysis identified seven major phenolic compounds, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, galangin, gallic acid, naringenin, p-coumaric acid, and rutin, with p-coumaric acid being the most abundant (306.71 mg/kg in aerial and 155.56 mg/kg in root extracts). Both extracts exhibited strong antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities, particularly the aerial extract (IC50 = 0.678 and 0.173 for DPPH, ABTS, respectively and 0.022 mg/mL for α-glucosidase inhibition). Molecular docking and MM-GBSA analyses supported these findings, showing that p-coumaric acid had the strongest binding to α-glucosidase (–7.783 kcal/mol, ΔG = –47.76 kcal/mol), stabilized by key interactions with Asp-62, Arg-200, His-332, and Arg-400. A 250 ns molecular dynamics simulation confirmed the stability of the complex, and in silico ADME analysis revealed good oral absorption (67%) and compliance with Lipinski’s rule. Overall, results indicate that p-coumaric acid is the primary bioactive compound contributing to the antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of B. aspera, with promising potential as a natural lead for α-glucosidase inhibition.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of oxalic acid (OA) and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) applications, both alone and in combination, on the preservation of postharvest quality characteristics of grapes. All samples were stored at 4 ± 1 °C and approximately 80–85% relative humidity for 28 days. The OA + MAP treatment most effectively limited weight loss (10.49%), soluble solids content (SSC; 20.62°Bx), and decay rate (1.78%), while providing the best preservation of total phenolic content (68.25% change), antioxidant activity (53.19% change), and individual phenolic compounds at the end of the storage period. A decrease in color parameters, including L* and a* values, was observed, with OA treatment particularly prominent in preserving the red color. Principal component analysis and hierarchical heatmap analysis confirmed distinct clustering of treatments from the control, highlighting the process efficiency of packaging-based interventions. The combination of OA and MAP treatments was more effective than either treatment alone in reducing quality losses in grapes during storage. Therefore, the widespread use of OA + MAP in commercial storage and marketing processes is recommended.

Rosehip (Rosa canina L.) is an important wild fruit species valued for its high nutritional and functional properties, particularly its richness in vitamin C, phenolic compounds, and antioxidant activity. Despite the widespread natural distribution of rosehip in Türkiye, many local genetic resources remain insufficiently characterized, limiting their effective utilization in breeding, conservation, and cultivation programs. The present study was conducted to evaluate the morphological, pomological, and biochemical characteristics of naturally growing rosehip genotypes in the Central District of Tunceli and to identify superior genotypes with potential for future breeding and cultivation efforts. Ten rosehip genotypes collected from natural populations at altitudes ranging from 1178 to 1256 m were evaluated for fruit and seed characteristics, fruit color, soluble solids content, titratable acidity, vitamin C, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, anthocyanins, antioxidant activity, and organic acid composition. Significant differences were observed among genotypes for all examined traits. Fruit weight ranged from 1.00 to 1.81 g, soluble solids content from 45.40% to 51.90%, titratable acidity from 1.03% to 2.77%, and vitamin C content from 235.67 to 1126.30 mg/100 g. Total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, total monomeric anthocyanin content, FRAP, and DPPH antioxidant activity values also varied significantly among genotypes. Organic acid analysis revealed considerable variation, particularly in citric and malic acid contents. Principal component analysis explained 92.4% of the total variation and grouped the genotypes into two major clusters. Based on the overall evaluation, genotypes TK2, TK5, TK9, and TK10 exhibited superior performance for several desirable traits. The results demonstrate the substantial genetic diversity present in the natural rosehip populations of Tunceli and highlight their potential value for germplasm conservation, selection breeding, and sustainable cultivation programs.

Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) is an important fruit crop with considerable morphological and biochemical diversity, and autochthonous genotypes represent valuable genetic resources for breeding and conservation programs. Many local varieties remain underexplored in terms of pomological and antioxidant traits. Eighteen indigenous grape genotypes collected from Muş province (Eastern Anatolia, Türkiye) were evaluated using morphological and biochemical parameters, including berry traits, phenolic composition, vitamin C, and antioxidant activity. Multivariate analyses including PCA, HCA, and Pearson correlation were performed to classify genotypes and determine trait relationships. The first two PCA components explained 51.9% of the total variation. Antioxidant-related traits mainly contributed to PC1, whereas berry size and anthocyanin content influenced PC2. HCA grouped the genotypes into distinct clusters according to antioxidant capacity and pomological characteristics. Correlation analysis showed significant positive relationships among antioxidant-related parameters. Berry size traits were positively correlated with each other, but negatively associated with seed number and skin thickness. The combined use of pomological, biochemical, and multivariate analyses proved useful for genotype classification. The identification of antioxidant-rich genotypes may support future breeding and conservation studies. The results highlight the importance of indigenous grape germplasm for sustainable viticulture.

The aim of this study was to examine the genotypes of wild blackberries growing naturally in Tunceli province in terms of fruit characteristics and to determine the ones with superior characteristics. Nine different genotypes were determined by population screening and 100 fruits were collected from each genotype. The physical properties such as fruit weight, length, width, as well as color, chemical content, and antioxidant properties were examined. Statistically significant differences were found among the genotypes; fruit weight, length, and width varied between 0.71 and 1.19 g, 10.08 and 12.63 mm, and 12.25 and 14.33 mm, respectively. The G9 genotype had the largest fruits, and the G6 genotype had the smallest fruits. In fruit color analyses, significant differences were observed among the genotypes, and the G2 genotype stood out with the highest L* value (20.05), but G9 had the lowest a* value (0.92). Total soluble solids (TSS) content varied between 11.95% in G2 and 21.10% in G7. Vitamin C content was highest in the G6 genotype (54.46 mg 100 g−1), while G9 had the lowest vitamin C content (22.66 mg 100 g−1). Significant differences were also observed among the genotypes in terms of phenolic content, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and antioxidant activity. As a result, in this study, significant differences in organic acid contents were determined among wild blackberry genotypes in Tunceli province. The G1 genotype was the richest in malic acid, while the G6 was the genotype with the highest ascorbic acid level. Various differences were also found among the genotypes in terms of oxalic acid, citric acid, and other organic acid contents. These findings may constitute an important resource in determining the commercial production and potential health benefits of wild blackberries. In the selection of blackberry genotypes, consideration of these organic acid contents is important, especially in terms of taste and nutritional value.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Quality preservation of jujube fruit during cold storage: effect of maturity stage and modified atmosphere packaging
Gun, Sefa; Ozturk, Burhan; Aglar, Erdal; Karakaya, Orhan
Bacground: This study, which examines the effect between the maturity stage and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) in order to prevent post-harvest quality losses and extend the storage life of jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) fruit, offers an important contribution to supply chain management. The fruits harvested at different maturity stages were stored at 0 ± 0.5 °C and 90 ± 5 RH in MAP and control conditions for 42 d and changes in quality, physiological and biochemical parameters were evaluated. Results: The lowest value was recorded in the early maturity (M-1) + MAP group for weight loss. Respiration rate decreased with advancing maturity, MAP treatments slowed down this process. Oxygen consumption and CO₂ production changed according to maturity level, MAP applications balanced gas exchange. MAP maintained brightness and color intensity of the fruit better. It also slowed down the firmness loss. The highest soluble solid content (SSC) was determined in the late maturity (M-3) + MAP group. Titratable acidity (TA) showed lower increase in MAP treatments. MAP significantly reduced the losses of vitamin C. Total phenolic, total flavonoids and antioxidant activity decreased during storage, while MAP treatments limited this decrease. Conclusions: The findings revealed that packaging jujube fruit with MAP, especially in early and mid-maturity stages, better preserves its quality parameters. Accordingly, MAP applications appropriate to the ripeness stage are recommended as an effective strategy to extend the fresh consumption period of jujube fruit and preserve its bioactive compounds.

İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2019Scopus SJRQ2A comprehensive study about Hibiscus sabdariffa leaves: antioxidant activity, polyphenol profile and macro- and micro-element content
Karaaslan, Nagihan M.
Hibiscus sabdariffa leaves are generally consumed by people in cold drinks and herbal tea. The purpose of this study is to examine in terms of antioxidant activity, polyphenol profile and macro- and micro-element content of H. sabdariffa leaves. Firstly, antioxidant activity studies were carried out by applying antioxidant activity assays to different extracts of the plant leaves. It has been observed that the antioxidant activity results vary depending on the extraction solvent and that the result obtained for one extract in some tests could not be obtained for the same extract in the other tests when solvents are changed. Secondly, the polyphenol profile of this plant was identified with a high-performance liquid chromatography–diode array detector (HPLC–DAD). For this purpose, thirteen polyphenols were examined in leaves of this plant, but only caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, ellagic acid, p-coumaric acid and quercetin were detected among the studied polyphenols. Finally, macro-element including calcium (Ca), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na) and micro-element including copper (Cu), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) analysis was carried out using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS).

- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Scopus SJRQ3Effects of conventional and organic rearing systems and hen age on oxidative stress parameters of blood and ovarian tissues in laying hens; [Konvansiyonel ve organik yetiştirme sistemleri ile tavuk yaşının yumurta tavuklarının kan ve yumurtalık dokusundaki oksidatif stres parametreleri üzerine etkisi]
Şimşek, Ülkü Gülcihan; Baykalir, Yasin; Erişir, Mine; Benzer, Fulya
In this study, effects of hen age and rearing systems on some oxidative stress parameters in serum and ovarian tissues of hens are investigated. For this purpose, total of 48 Bovans White commercial laying hybrids from two different rearing systems (conventional cage and organic) at 30 and 60 weeks of age were used. Serum and ovarian tissues of the hens were collected following slaughter process and malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and catalase (CAT) levels of serum and ovarian tissues were determined. MDA levels of serum was found significantly higher in conventional system, both in 30 and 60 weeks old (P<0.05). GSH-Px activity was lower, conversely CAT activity was significantly higher in conventional system (P<0.05). Hen age didn’t affect MDA, GSH, GSH-Px and CAT levels of serum (P>0.05). In addition, there weren’t any significant interactions between rearing system and hen age in serum (P>0.05). MDA (P=0.010) and GSH (P<0.01) levels of ovarian tissue were found significantly higher in conventional system while GSH levels of ovarian tissue had increased in 60 weeks old (P<0.01). GSH-Px and CAT activity was similar between groups (P>0.05). Interaction between rearing system and hen age affected activity of CAT in ovarian tissue (P<0.05). As a result, conventional battery cages caused oxidative stress interrelated with increasing lipid peroxidation and MDA levels in laying hens. Antioxidant enzymes that play role in reduction of MDA were inadequate in this system. Oxidant/antioxidant balance can be established at 30 or 60 weeks of age by hen organism and therefore MDA levels of tissues would not be affected by age.
