Rare-earth substitution provides a route for tailoring the structural, magnetic, and gamma-ray attenuation behaviour of Ho-based Co-Mn double perovskites; however, the combined effects of rare-earth ionic size, magnetic character, and substitution level remain insufficiently understood. In this study, Ho1.5La0.5CoMnO6, Ho1.2Er0.8CoMnO6, Ho1.3Sm0.7CoMnO6, and Ho2CoMnO6 were synthesized through a two-step route involving mechanical alloying to obtain precursor powders, followed by annealing at 1000 °C in air to promote oxidation and double-perovskite phase formation. Their structural, thermal, surface-chemical, magnetic, and gamma-ray attenuation properties were examined by X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, SEM-EDS, vibrating-sample magnetometry, and theoretical shielding calculations based on half-value layer (HVL) and transmission factor (TF) parameters. The XRD patterns were consistent with predominantly monoclinic P21/n type double-perovskite structures, while weak additional reflections suggested possible minor secondary phases. SEM-EDS showed homogeneous elemental distributions, and XPS analysis indicated Co2+ dominated and mixed Mn-valence characteristics in the spectra where reliable component analysis was possible. All compositions exhibited a low-temperature ferromagnetic-like field response but did not reach magnetic saturation at 3 T. Ho2CoMnO6 and Ho1.3Sm0.7CoMnO6 showed the highest field-dependent magnetization values at 10 K, whereas Ho1.2Er0.8CoMnO6 displayed the lowest response. The theoretical gamma-ray attenuation calculations showed clear composition-dependent differences. At 0.662 MeV, the HVL values were 1.0650, 0.9972, 1.0438, and 0.9967 cm for Ho1.5La0.5CoMnO6, Ho1.2Er0.8CoMnO6, Ho1.3Sm0.7CoMnO6, and Ho2CoMnO6, respectively. At the same photon energy and a thickness of 1.0 cm, the corresponding TF values were 0.0896, 0.0858, 0.0882, and 0.0860. Thus, Ho1.2Er0.8CoMnO6 and Ho2CoMnO6 exhibited the lowest HVL and TF values among the investigated compositions. The shielding calculations identified Ho1.2Er0.8CoMnO6 and Ho2CoMnO6 as the most effective attenuators, with lower HVL and TF values across the investigated energy range. These results show that rare-earth substitution enables compositional tuning of magnetic and theoretical gamma-ray attenuation behaviour, with the observed trends reflecting the combined influence of rare-earth ionic size, magnetic character, substitution level, and valence-state complexity.

Güler, Ömer; Şimşek, Telem; Şimşek, Tuncay; Evin, Ertan; Baykal, Duygu Sen; ALMisned, Ghada; Tekin, H.O.

In this study, a novel FeCoNiMnCu HEA was synthesized via mechanical alloying and exhibited a single-phase face-centered cubic (FCC) structure with a crystallite size of 11.7 nm and a lattice strain of 0.81 %. Magnetic characterization revealed soft ferromagnetic behavior with a saturation magnetization of 32 emu/g at 300 K, increasing to 53 emu/g at 10 K. The alloy demonstrated excellent gamma-ray attenuation, with lower half-value layer (HVL) and mean free path (MFP) values than conventional shielding materials. Notably, its fast neutron removal cross-section (ΣR = 0.1654 cm−1) outperformed standard materials such as B4C, graphite, and water in the fast neutron energy range. These findings underline the multifunctional performance of FeCoNiMnCu HEA, highlighting its strong potential for use in advanced nuclear reactor components and radiation shielding technologies.

Simsek, Tuncay; Simsek, Telem; Chattopadhyay, Arun K.; Avar, Barış; Yakin, Alican; Guler, Seval Hale; Almisned, Ghada; Sen Baykal, Duygu; Tekin, H.O.

In this study, mechanically alloyed Fe70Nb10V10B10, Co70Nb10V10B10, Ni70Nb10V10B10, and (FeCoNi) 70Nb10V10B10 high-entropy alloys were successfully synthesized, and their structural, magnetic, and radiation shielding properties were systematically investigated. Structural analysis revealed that Fe favored bcc phase formation, while Co and Ni stabilized fcc structures; the equiatomic alloy resulted in a single-phase fcc solid solution with the smallest crystallite size (2.1 nm). All samples exhibited soft ferromagnetic behavior, with the Fe-based alloy achieving the highest saturation magnetization (120 emu/g), and the (FeCoNi) 70Nb10V10B10 alloy displaying the lowest coercivity. Among all compositions, Co70Nb10V10B10 demonstrated the best gamma and neutron shielding performance, showing the highest linear attenuation coefficient and fast neutron removal cross-section. The equiatomic alloy also exhibited well-balanced and stable shielding behavior. These findings position Co70Nb10V10B10 as a promising candidate for multifunctional applications requiring both efficient radiation protection and favorable magnetic properties.

Effect of dilute rare-earth addition on structural evolution, mechanical, magnetic, and radiation shielding properties of CoFeNiMnTi high-entropy alloy

Özkul, İskender; Kalay, Ece; Güler, Ömer; Karaduman, Oktay; Canbay, Canan Aksu; Hameed, Louis Ibrahim; Almisned, Ghada; Baykal, Duygu Sen; Tekin, H.O.

This study investigates the effect of 1 at.% rare-earth (RE = Sm, Gd, Dy) addition on the structural, mechanical, magnetic, and radiation shielding properties of CoFeNiMnTi high-entropy alloys produced by arc melting. X-ray diffraction results reveal an FCC-dominant structure accompanied by secondary Laves-type phases, with increased phase complexity observed in Gd- and Dy-containing alloys. Mechanical evaluation shows a significant hardness enhancement, reaching 581 HV for Gd and 548 HV for Dy, compared to 447 HV for the reference alloy. Magnetic measurements indicate soft-ferromagnetic behaviour for all compositions, with magnetization increasing in the order S0<S1<S2<S3, highlighting the strong influence of Dy on magnetic response. Elemental mapping confirms a homogeneous distribution with minor local compositional variations contributing to phase evolution. Thermodynamic analysis suggests that rare-earth addition increases lattice distortion and chemical complexity without strongly differentiating among RE types. In terms of radiation shielding, linear attenuation coefficients and effective atomic number values demonstrate improved gamma-ray attenuation, particularly at low energies, with Dy exhibiting the highest performance. In contrast, fast neutron removal cross section values remain nearly unchanged, indicating limited sensitivity to dilute RE addition. It can be concluded that the incorporation of Dy results in the most balanced multifunctional performance, whereas Gd primarily enhances mechanical strength, emphasizing the importance of rare-earth selection in the design of high-entropy alloys for radiation-related applications.

Designing multifunctional ferromagnetic high-entropy shape memory alloys (FHESMAs): Cr and Mn influence on structural, physical, magnetic and nuclear radiation shielding in NiFeGaCo alloys

Özkul, İskender; Karaduman, Oktay; Şimşek, Tuncay; Şimşek, Telem; Canbay, Canan Aksu; Güler, Ömer; ALMisned, Ghada; Tekin, H.O.

This study systematically investigates the influence of Cr and Mn additions on the structural, magnetic, and radiation shielding properties of NiFeGaCo-based ferromagnetic high-entropy shape memory alloys (FHESMAs) synthesized via the arc melting method. The fabricated NiFeGaCo, NiFeGaCoCr, and NiFeGaCoMn alloys were comprehensively characterized in terms of their phase formation, microstructure, martensitic transformation behavior, and magnetic performance. The results demonstrated that Mn addition significantly improved the magnetic properties, yielding the highest saturation magnetization (56.64 emu/g) and lowest coercivity (5.55 Oe), making NiFeGaCoMn highly suitable for soft magnetic applications. In contrast, Cr addition provided moderate magnetic behavior but enhanced structural stability with the largest crystallite size and lowest lattice strain. Moreover, gamma-ray and fast neutron shielding investigations revealed that the Cr-containing alloy exhibited superior performance in terms of linear attenuation coefficient, half-value layer, effective electron density, and fast neutron removal cross-section values, while Mn addition slightly reduced these shielding capabilities. It can be concluded that Cr addition offers a balanced advantage in designing FHESMAs with combined magnetic sensitivity and radiation shielding efficiency, whereas Mn addition is more effective for maximizing magnetic performance with a compromise in shielding characteristics.

Multifunctional properties and microstructural correlations of NiCoMnTi-Based high entropy alloys with focus on magnetic, thermodynamic, and radiation shielding characteristics

Özkul, İskender; Karaduman, Oktay; Şimşek, Tuncay; Şimşek, Telem; Canbay, Canan Aksu; Güler, Ömer; ALMisned, Ghada; Baykal, Duygu Sen; Tekin, Huseyin Ozan

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are a novel class of materials known for their complex compositions and exceptional multifunctional properties. In this study, NiCoMnTi-based HEAs were modified with Fe, Cr, and Cu as fifth elements to systematically investigate their structural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and nuclear radiation shielding characteristics. The alloys were synthesized via arc melting and characterized using XRD, SEM-EDS, VSM, and theoretical modeling methods. The findings reveal that each additional element uniquely alters the alloy’s properties. The Fe-containing alloy exhibited a well-defined lamellar microstructure, the highest saturation magnetization (10.79 emu/g), and a Curie temperature near 450 K, along with strong gamma-ray shielding performance across both low and high energy ranges. The Cr-containing alloy demonstrated soft magnetic behavior, featuring the lowest coercivity (29.64 Oe) and the highest fast neutron removal cross-section. In contrast, the Cu-containing alloy enhanced low-energy photon attenuation due to its higher atomic number but exhibited limited magnetic homogeneity. Despite these differences, all samples displayed stable thermodynamic behavior and comparable buildup factor trends. Overall, the addition of Fe led to a synergistic improvement in both magnetic and radiation shielding capabilities of the NiCoMnTi-based HEA system.

Comprehensive evaluation of thermal, structural, magnetic, and radiation shielding properties of CuAlNi and CuAlNi-X (X = Co, CoFe, CoFeMn, CoFeMnCr) high-temperature shape memory alloys

Özkul, İskender; Karaduman, Oktay; Şimşek, Telem; Şimşek, Tuncay; Canbay, Canan Aksu; Güler, Ömer; Şan, Mert Hüseyin; ALMisned, Ghada; Tekin, H.O.

This study investigates the thermal, structural, magnetic, and radiation shielding properties of CuAlNi-based high-temperature shape memory alloys (HTSMAs) enhanced through sequential alloying with Co, Fe, Mn, and Cr. Five different variants were produced, designated as CRef (reference CuAlNi alloy), CCo (CuAlNiCo), CFe (CuAlNiCoFe), CMn (CuAlNiCoFeMn), and CCr (CuAlNiCoFeMnCr). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) confirmed the presence of reversible martensitic transformations in all alloys, with Co and Mn additions significantly enhancing thermal stability. Structural analyses using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and microscopy showed significant grain refinement and phase transitions, while magnetic measurements highlighted the strong ferromagnetic response of CCo (CuAlNiCo) and the increased coercivity of CMn (CuAlNiCoFeMn) due to domain-pinning effects. Moreover, radiation shielding analyses demonstrated the critical influence of density and elemental composition, with CRef exhibiting superior linear attenuation coefficients (LAC), effective atomic number (Zeff), and energy absorption buildup factor (EBF) performance, attributed to its optimized Cu fraction and high density (7.1296 g/cm3). In contrast, CMn (CuAlNiCoFeMn) showed the weakest shielding properties due to reduced density and Mn content. Among the samples, CRef emerged as the superior alloy, demonstrating exceptional multifunctionality across all evaluated parameters, while CCr (CuAlNiCoFeMnCr) displayed synergistic properties, combining shape memory behavior with competitive shielding efficiency. It can be concluded that CuAlNi-based HTSMAs hold significant potential as multifunctional materials, particularly for nuclear safety and aerospace engineering applications, where adaptive functionality and radiation protection are critical.

A short review of structural, mechanical and magnetic properties of high and medium entropy alloys added rare earth elements

    Yayla, Nihal; Güler, Ömer

This study presents a comprehensive review of the structural, mechanical and magnetic properties of high and medium entropy alloys (HEA and MEA) with rare earth elements (REE) additions. The addition of REE has been shown to have significant effects on phase transformations, microstructural arrangements and thermodynamic stability. Studies in the literature show that REE addition improves properties such as hardness, strength, deformation resistance and magnetic performance. In particular, changes such as transitions from FCC to HCP, formation of intermetallic phases and grain refinement have been observed in phase types with the addition of elements such as Gd, Y and Nd. REE added HEAs offer great potential for modern engineering and advanced technology applications with their superior magnetic moments, magnetocaloric effects and thermal stability. However, there is limited information in the literature on REE added HEAs. This review aims to provide a comprehensive framework for the development of REE added HEAs and to serve as an important reference point for future research.

Investigation of thermal, crystal and magnetic behavior of addition of Nd rare earth element effect on CuAlMn shape memory alloy

    Kanca, Muhammed Sait

In this study, CuAlMn alloys, a popular Cu-based shape memory alloy, were chosen because they exhibit superior shape memory properties and improved ductility compared to other Cu-based SMAs. The rare earth element Nd (neodymium) was added to CuAlMn alloy at the specified atomic percentages in the composition Cu70-xAl24Mn6Ndx(x = 0,2,4,8) and their thermal behavior, crystal structure, surface morphology and magnetic properties were investigated after fabrication. As a result of the thermal analysis measurements, it was observed that for low Nd ratios, the austenite phase transformation initial temperature of the CuAlMn alloy was increased, while at high Nd ratios, a decrease in the shape memory property was detected. Martensitic phase and precipitate phase α phase were observed in the crystal structure properties of CuAlMn alloys without and with Nd doping. These results were also detected in surface morphology observations. In addition, the crystal size decreased from 135 to 105 nm with Nd doping. As a result of magnetic measurements, CuAlMn ternary shape memory alloy was found to be paramagnetic at room temperature. Magnetic susceptibility values of the alloys showing paramagnetic magnetic properties were calculated as 11.5 × 10–6, 12.5 × 10–6, 9.15 × 10–6 and 6.15 × 10–6 emu.Oe−1.g−1, respectively. According to these results, the magnetic susceptibility value decreased with increasing Nd ratio.

FeCoNiMnCr high-entropy alloys (HEAs): Synthesis, structural, magnetic and nuclear radiation absorption properties

Şimşek, Telem; Kavaz, Esra; Güler, Ömer; Şimşek, Tuncay; Avar, Barış; Aslan, Naim; Almisned, Ghada; Zakaly, Hesham M.H.; Tekin, H.O.

We report the synthesis and structural, magnetic and Radiation shielding properties of High Entropy Alloy (HEA) produced through mechanical alloying method. Using an X-Ray Diffractometer (PanalyticalEmpryan) with CuK radiation at 45 kV and 40 mA, the phase identification starting elements and as-milled powders are identified. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), morphological and microstructural investigations were conducted (FEI Quanta FEG 450). EDX and elemental mapping analyses are conducted to assess the purity and elemental distributions of the synthesized alloys. Using the Quantum Design Physical Characteristics Measurement System (PPMS) with vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and a magnetic field of 30 kOe at room temperature, magnetic properties are examined. Using 137Cs radioisotope and mathematical methods, gamma-ray and neutron shielding properties of HEA are investigated in a conventional transmission setup using experimental and theoretical approaches. In the presence of a 3 T applied field, the sample exhibits a low magnetization of 5.30 emu/g at 300 K. Moreover, Ms is raised to 22 emu/g at 10 K owing to decreased thermal effects. The temperature dependence of the magnetization is recorded in the presence of a 1 T applied field. HEA exhibits superior neutron attenuation properties than conventional absorption materials such as B4C, graphite, and water. Our results showed that the synthesized HEA has superiority over other alloys and conventional neutron absorption materials. It can be concluded that the proposed novel HEA might be investigated further in terms of broadening its characterization and clarifying its other crucial properties to extend the scope of the current investigation.

Impact of electron concentration on the transformation temperature and important physical properties of NiMnSnFe ferromagnetic shape memory alloys

Malkoç, Türkan; Kanca, Muhammed Sait; Işık, Erdem; Kök, Mediha

This study aimed to explore the influence of electron concentration on the NiMnSn alloy, which is a crucial ferromagnetic shape memory alloy (FSMA). The alloy was doped with various amounts of iron element to assess its effect. According to DSC measurement, iron doping has resulted in a general decrease in the transformation temperature value of NiMnSn alloy, as well as a decrease in the transformation enthalpy value. The orthorhombic martensite phase of NiMnSn alloy was replaced by L21 austenite crystal structure in X-ray measurements. Martensite, austenite, and precipitate phases were observed in SEM images. Iron doping significantly increased the magnetic saturation value of NiMnSn alloy, according to magnetic measurements, and thermomagnetic measurements revealed similar results. Effect of Cu, Sn and Sb addition on the structural, thermal and magnetic properties of body-centered cubic structured CoNiMnGaSi high entropy alloy

Şimşek, Telem; Özkul, İskender; Canbay, Canan Aksu; Avar, Barış; Şimşek, Tuncay; Güler, Seval Hale; Özcan, Sadan; Güler, Ömer; Chattopadhyay, Arun K.

In this study structural, morphological, thermal and magnetic properties of equiatomic CoNiMnGaSi (base), CoNiMnGaSiCu, CoNiMnGaSiSn and CoNiMnGaSiSb alloys are discussed. The formation of solid-solution nanocrystalline bcc structure of the alloys was determined by XRD and DTA techniques. SEM–EDS analyses also revealed the homogeneous distribution of the elements. The room temperature magnetic hysteresis loops showed that as-casted alloys reached saturation easily with coercivity less than or equal to 35 Oe. As the Cu and Sn were added to the alloy, the saturation magnetization was decreased from 112 emu/g to 50 emu/g, which was mainly due to the substitution of non-magnetic atoms to the magnetic Co in the base CoNiMnGaSi alloy, whereas the addition of Sb to the base alloy did not have a significant effect on the Ms. The CoNiMnGaSiSb was found to have the highest Curie Temperature of 670 K, which makes the alloy a promising candidate for power industry-related applications.

Cyano-complexes and salts with tetracyanonickellateII and N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-ethylenediamine: synthesis, IR spectra, magnetic properties, thermal analyses, and crystal structures

    Karadag, A.; Korkmaz, S. Aslan; Andaç, O.; Yerli, Y.; Topcu, Y.

Four cyano complexes, [Ni(N-bishydeten)Ni(CN)(4)](n) (c1), [Cu(N-bishydeten)(2)][Ni(CN)(4)] (c2), [Zn-2(N-bishydeten)(2)Ni(CN)(4)](n) (c3), and [Cd(N-bishydeten)(2)][Ni(CN)(4)] (c4), have been synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, elemental, and thermal analyses. The structures of c2 and c4 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies; both structures contain isolated cations and anions. The c2 consists of [Cu(N-bishydeten)(2)](2+) with octahedrally coordinated Cu-II and diamagnetic [Ni(CN)(4)](2-), but c4 consists of [Cd(N-bishydeten)(2)](2+), in which Cd-II is eight coordinate with two tetradentate N-bishydeten and diamagnetic [Ni(CN)(4)](2-). The value of the shape measure S (degrees) indicates that the coordination geometry around Cd-II lies along D-2d [dodecahedron; (dd)], C-2v [bicapped trigonal prism; (btp)], and D-4d [square antiprism; (sap)] but close to D-2d and D-4d. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of c1 and c2 show the presence of little antiferromagnetic interaction below 20 K. Thermal analyses reveal that first neutral N-bishydeten and then cyano ligands were liberated from the complexes.
