Nickel, Lead, and Cadmium Removal Using a Low-Cost Adsorbent - Banana Peel

Ince, Muharrem; Ince, Olcay Kaplan; Yonten, Vahap; Karaaslan, Nagihan M.

Water pollution because of inorganic contaminants is a serious problem due to the acute toxicities and carcinogenic nature of pollutants. Recently, much attention has been focused on using natural and low-cost adsorbents, especially food residues, for removing toxic metal ions. Batch removal of nickel (Ni(II)), lead (Pb(II)), and cadmium (Cd(II)) from aqueous solution using a natural adsorbent is described in this study. Effects of various parameters on adsorption capacities such as pH, adsorbent dose, and stirring time were investigated by batch experiments. The maximum adsorption capacities for Ni(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II) ions were 1.6 mg g(-1), 125 mg g(-1), and 84 mg g(-1), respectively. Characterization of the surface modification was performed with FTIR measurements. FTIR spectra showed that chemisorption takes place at the surface of the adsorbent. The Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherms were used to evaluate the equilibrium data. The characteristic parameters for each isotherm were determined. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm provided the best correlation for Ni(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) using banana peel.

Adsorption of bisphenol A from aqueous solutions by Pleurotus eryngii immobilized on Amberlite XAD-4 using as a new adsorbent

Yonten, Vahap; Ince, Muharrem; Tanyol, Mehtap; Yildirim, Numan

The adsorption of bisphenol A (BPA) in a fixed-bed column was evaluated in this work. Fungus Pleurotus eryngii isolated from Tunceli (Turkey) immobilized on XAD-4 resin was used as an adsorbent for decontamination of BPA from aqueous solutions. The extent of BPA removal capacity was evaluated as a function of parameters such as pH, volume of the sample, and column bed height. Adsorption isotherms of BPA on immobilized P. eryngii were determined and correlated with common isotherm equations such as Langmuir and Freundlich models. The mechanism of adsorption of BPA was analyzed preadsorption (XAD-4+fungus) and postadsorption (XAD-4+fungus+BPA) using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results show that adsorption ability of BPA by immobilized P. eryngii is possible and this system yields the best degree of BPA removal (90%) at pH 11 for an initial load of 120mgL(-1). Therefore, this material can be used as a very effective adsorbent for BPA decontamination in aqueous solutions.

    Barim-Oz, O.; Sahin, H.

The experiment was conducted to determine the most effective antioxidant (among the vitamin E (VE), vitamin C (VC), vitamin A (VA), astaxanthine (AX), beta-carotene (beta C)) on the ovarian egg number and size, level of VE, VC, VA, AX, beta C and oxidative stress (as malondialdehyde (MDA)) in the hepatopancreas, ovarian, gills and muscle tissue during ovarian development of Astacus leptodactylus. One control (C) and five experimental diets (EE, EC, EA, EAX and E beta C) were prepared. The EE, EC, EA, EAX and E beta C groups were formed by added 150 mg kg-1 VE, 200 mg kg-1 VC, 240 mg kg-1 VA, 200 mg kg-1 AX and 200 mg kg-1 beta C to diet C, respectively. At the end of the experiment found that the dietary antioxidants increased ovarian egg number and size and reduced the level of MDA in the tissues. Ovarian egg number and size were highest in the EE and EAX diet groups in the comparison to control (p< 0.001). The level of MDA in the tissues was lowest in the EAX diet group in the comparison to control (p< 0.001). The highest levels of VE, VC, VA, AX and beta C were found in the hepatopancreas and ovarian compared with muscle and gills. The highest level of MDA also was determined in the ovarian according to other tissues. In conclusion, the VE and AX in broodstock diets were the most effective antioxidants on the ovarian egg number and size of A. leptodactylus.

Testing the human capital development model: the case of apprenticeships in Turkey

    Akpinar, Taner; Gün, Servet

Human capital theory was developed to study how individual agents make rational choices or how they invest in human capital to maximize their welfare. One of the leading founders of this perspective, Becker, argues that schooling, on-the-job training, medical care, migration and searching for information about prices and incomes are different types of human capital as all these investments improve skills, knowledge or health, thereby increasing individual welfare. He states that education and training are the most important investments in human capital. Apprenticeship training is, thus, identified and treated as a type of investment in human capital. At first glance, it seems that apprentices who are being trained are acquiring skills in a specific vocation. One would suppose that the trainees are getting knowledge and skills and that they would become masters in their profession after a long training process. However, further enquiry is needed to see if this is the case in reality. The present small-scale, exploratory study, based on 20 interviews - 10 with apprentices and 10 with their employers - aims to investigate the apprenticeship training system in Turkey. In doing so, it seeks to test the basic tenets of human capital theory against the facts discovered. The findings, if they could be generalized, suggest that the Turkish apprenticeship system is a form of child labour rather than a training process. Contrary to apprentice training being a human capital investment, the study finds that trainees do not rationally decide to enter an apprenticeship nor are they selected by a meritocratic system. All of them come from poor peasant families or low-wage working families where the most pressing need is for the child to earn money.

CRYOPRESERVATION OF GOLDFISH (Carassius auratus) SPERMATOZOA: EFFECTS OF EXTENDER SUPPLEMENTED WITH TAURINE ON SPERM MOTILITY AND DNA DAMAGE

Kutluyer, Filiz; Ögretmen, Fatih; Inanan, Burak Evren

BACKGROUND: Amino acids, present in seminal plasma at high concentration, protect spermatozoa against cell damage during cryopreservation. OBJECTIVE: Experiments were designed to analyze the effect of semen extender supplemented with taurine on post-thawed sperm motility and duration, as well as DNA damage. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Extenders were supplemented with 1, 2 or 4 mM taurine. Semen samples were diluted at the ratio of 1:9 with the extenders. Diluted samples were aspirated into 0.25 ml French straws and 0.1 ml pellets. DNA damage was assessed with the comet assay after cryopreservation. RESULTS: The percentage and duration of sperm motility were significantly increased by taurine. Additionally, sperm motility and the motility period in pellets were higher than in straws. The best concentration of taurine was 4 mM, and the highest post-thaw motility rate (72.50 +/- 3.54%) and duration (17.50 +/- 0.71 s) were obtained from the extender with 4 mM in pellets. DNA damage was decreased after taurine supplementation. CONCLUSION: Pellets could be used for goldfish sperm cryopreservation. The addition of 4 mM taurine increases the post-thaw motility and decreases DNA damage on goldfish semen.

A modified human reliability analysis for cargo operation in single point mooring (SPM) off-shore units

    Akyuz, Emre; Celik, Erkan

A Single Point Mooring (SPM) unit is a widely recognised off-shore terminal facility in the marine industry since a considerable amount of liquid cargoes can easily be transferred into huge tankers such as VLCCs or ULCCs. Although the system presents high safety standards, any minor accidents due to human error may cause serious harm to the marine environment, human life and the commodity itself. Therefore, nominated crew on-board the tanker and the unit should be very careful during SPM cargo operations. At this point, human reliability plays a critical role in avoiding potential operational or technical failures. In this context, the aim of this paper is to perform a comprehensive human reliability assessment during cargo operations of an SPM unit to enhance maritime safety in off-shore units. The paper prompts a methodological extension of human error assessment and reduction technique (HEART) by incorporating interval type-2 fuzzy sets which overcome more of the uncertainty of experts' judgement and expression in decision-making. The proposed approach not only provides theoretical insight but practical contribution to human reliability assessment in the marine and off-shore industries. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Production Optimisation of a Land-Based Trout Farm and the Reduction of its Environmental Effects

Guner, Yusuf; Kizak, Volkan; Saygi, Hulya; Turan, Gamze; Tekogul, Hatice; Karacalar, Ulviye; Gulec, Fatih; Hekimoglu, Muge

In this study, certain water quality parameters (water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, total inorganic nitrogen (TIN), phosphate (PO4), nitrite (NO2), nitrate (NO3), ammonium (NH4), and (BOD5) in the effluents and the efficiency of the treatment systems for eliminating wastes at a commercial trout farm with a capacity of 10 tons/year in Izmir (Kemalpasa) were examined. The DO, temperature, pH, TIN, PO4, NO2, NO3, and BOD5 measured, were different in the outlet waters when compared with the inlet waters (p<0.05). The settling basin did not reduce the TIN and PO4, on the contrary, it caused an increase in the nitrogen (N) up to 19.9% and phosphorus (P) up to 20.30%, while the wetlands reduced the N, P, and BOD5 up to 53.2%, 58.2%, and 36.5%, respectively (p<0.05). According to the chemical and biological methods, the averages of the TIN and P loads for one tone of cultured trout without treatment were estimated to be were 80 kg and 7 kg, respectively. The annual TIN load of this trout farm was estimated to be 21.3 kg while the TP load was 2.9 kg for one tone of cultured trout when the treatment efficiency was taken into account. The microbiological analyses conducted with the effluent waters showed that the rate of aerobic mesophilic bacteria was found to be high in the summer but low in the winter. It was also detected that the coliform group bacteria were present in the environment in the summer while their occurence was with-in standards in the winter. Interactions of the 9 water quality parameters were identified through the linear regression analysis in order to reduce the environmental effects of the facility DO=28.296 - (0.248 x BOD5)- (2.948 x pH) + (0.189 x temperature) + (0.851 x inlet water) + (0.163 x winter) (R-2=0.912). According to this model, the DO values were increased by the temperature, inlet water and the winter season while reduced by the BOD5 and pH. The dissolved oxygen content in the wetland outlet water was measured as being high because of the nutrient and temperature rises which boosted photosyntesis. It was concluded that using mechanical settling methods were inadequate to minimise the nutrients released into the receiving water body so wetlands should be constructed in such a way as to receive the flow of effluents from the trout farms. As a result the quality of water used by the facility has no adverse impact on the aquaculture and environmental ecosystem.

Performance evaluation of crumb rubber and paraffin modified stone mastic asphalt

Kök, Baha Vural; Yilmaz, Mehmet; Akpolat, Mustafa

Recently, crumb rubber (CR) obtained from waste tires and Fischer-Tropsch paraffin are mostly used in bitumen modification to improve the performance of bituminous mixtures. Each of these additives affects the different properties of mixtures. There are limited studies in the literature about the combined usage of additive in the same mixture to utilize the different characteristics. In this study, the stability, stiffness, fatigue resistance, permanent deformation resistance, and moisture susceptibility characteristics of the stone mastic asphalt prepared with the bitumen modified with CR and paraffin were examined and compared with the control mixture. It was determined that CR-modified mixtures showed significantly more elastic characteristics. The mixture in which the 10% CR and 3% paraffin were used together gave better results in terms of moisture susceptibility and fatigue resistance when compared with the control mixture. It was determined that the use of paraffin together with CR contributed to the improved performance, and was in accordance with the CR in terms of mechanical characteristics of stone mastic asphalt.
